Southampton dealt Ryan Gauld blow

Southampton’s hopes of signing Ryan Gauld this summer have taken a blow after SC Farense triggered a one-year extension option in his contract, meaning he will now set the Saints back somewhere in the region of £3.5m, rather than being available on a free transfer as was initially thought.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were first linked with a move for the Scottish midfielder by the Daily Record earlier this month, with the reports suggesting that he was keen on a move to St Mary’s so he could link up with fellow Scot and former Dundee United teammate Stuart Armstrong.

The 25-year-old’s contract with SC Farense was set to expire at the end of the season, meaning the Saints could have signed him on a Bosman transfer, but Portuguese news outlet O Jogo have now suggested that they have triggered a one-year extension to his contract ahead of the summer, where an offer of €4m (£3.5m) will be enough to prise him away from Estadio de São Luís.

SC Farense’s head coach Sergio Vieira was full of praise for Gauld last year, saying:

“He has given us fantastic individual quality, played most of every 90
minutes and has been crucial in
contributing with assists and goals.

“He’s a great player, technically very developed and, with the ball at his feet, capable of realising actions that only the best players do.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Given that SC Farense suffered relegation from the Portuguese top-flight this season, despite the best efforts of Gauld, it seems extremely likely that he will depart this summer, but Southampton will have to shell out a fee if they want to bring him to St Mary’s.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a superb season in the Liga NOS, contributing seven goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances, which helped him average an impressive 7.19 rating from WhoScored, which is better than any Southampton player managed this season.

Therefore, despite the disappointing news that Gauld seemingly won’t be available on a free transfer this summer, Martin Semmens should definitely try to sign him, as he could prove to be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s side ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl can amend key 20/21 disaster with summer swoop for £4.5m-rated beast

Celtic: Inter Milan re-enter the chase for Odsonne Edouard

Inter Milan have re-joined the race for Celtic star man Odsonne Edouard, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Lowdown

Barring a miracle, Celtic will almost certainly lose the striker in the upcoming transfer window. Contractually, the Frenchman currently has only 12 months left on his Parkhead deal [Transfermarkt].

Celtic will surely look to profit on their initial £9 million Edouard outlay, mainly to prevent the embarrassment of losing him for nothing next year [BBC].

Despite not hitting the high standards of his glorious 2019/20 season, the France Under-21 international still registered a commendable 22 goals in 40 games in the 2020/21 campaign [Transfermarkt].

The Latest

Leicester City, AC Milan and Arsenal have held long standing admiration for Edouard’s talent [Leicester Mercury].

However, fresh developments suggest Serie A champions Inter Milan could now make their move [Sempre Milan].

Facing the possibility of losing frontman Romelu Lukaku amid attention from Chelsea [EuroSport], the Nerazzurri see Edouard as a financially viable prospective replacement who could fill the Belgian’s shoes [Calcio Mercato].

Demonstrating his attacking threat, the former Paris Saint Germain youth averages 3.5 shots on goal per 90 minutes [WhoScored].

Verdict: The Inter Milan interest in Edouard is positive, it could mean Celtic receive a substantial fee

Fundamentally, the attention from the Italian giants is a positive for the Celts and driving a potential bidding war should be a priority. Consequentially, the money obtained for Edouard’s signature could go a long way to revamping a depleted playing squad.

It is easy to see why former boss Neil Lennon labelled Edouard as an “outstanding, talented player”, due to his diverse range of offensive attributes [National], but at this point the focus should only be on getting the maximum profit to reinvest into the squad.

An iconic Parkhead figure, it’s fair to say his contribution will not be forgotten should Edouard move on after four successful years at the club.

In other news, Celtic are set to miss out on a landmark appointment.

Maher takes over Bulls captaincy for near future

BRISBANE, May 20 AAP – Jimmy Maher took the final step available to him in Queensland cricket today when he was appointed the state’s new captain.

AAP20-May-2002BRISBANE, May 20 AAP – Jimmy Maher took the final step available to him in Queensland cricket today when he was appointed the state’s new captain.Maher was preferred to his Australian one-day teammate Matthew Hayden and Bulls veterans Martin Love and Wade Seccombe when selectors decided on a replacement for Stuart Law, who stepped down in March after leading the Bulls to their third successive championship. The appointment completes the Queensland playing resume for the 28-year-old Maher, who had long been tagged a future first-class player during his teenage years in Babinda. He led the state under-17 team and quickly forced his way into the state senior team before the historic Sheffield Shield final triumph in 1994-95.But Maher, in the nicest possible way, would prefer to be unavailable for Queensland next March when the Bulls try to win their sixth championship in nine seasons. He would rather be playing in Australia’s World Cup defence in South Africa after breaking back into the national one-day team two months ago.”Everyone wants to play for their country and hopefully I can push into the World Cup and beyond,” Maher said.”And I’m still dying to get into the Test team at some stage but it’s a tremendous honour to be named captain of Queensland and it’s something that you dream of as a kid.”I hold no fears about the role and with the unit we have and the experience around and the young guys, there is plenty to look forward to.”Maher is seen as a link between Queensland’s ageing group and its emerging players, including by 20-year-old international spinner Nathan Hauritz.Maher led Queensland against South Australia in February, when Law and Hayden were unavailable, scoring 66 and 52 as the Bulls marched to a 106-run victory in his 100th career match.Like Australian one-day captain Ricky Ponting, who attended the cricket academy in the same year, Maher has grown up with cricket and has matured over the last few years. His wife Deb is expecting the couple’s first child in June, when Maher will be in camp with the Australian team for the three-match one-day series against Pakistan.”It is exciting times and you’re always waiting for something bad to happen so hopefully we don’t lose our first game,” he said.If Maher retains his place in the national one-day team, he will miss at least half of the next domestic season, while Hayden probably won’t play a match if he remains in the Test and one-day squads.Maher will have the support of Law, Love and other regular faces like Michael Kasprowicz and Seccombe and the new skipper wants to involve his team.”It’s not going to be a Jimmy Maher-run show,” Maher said.”I’m the sort of person that will listen to a lot of people’s ideas, whether they’ve played one game or a hundred games.”

Therein lies the rub

By and large, the bowling has almost always been the bigger problem inIndian cricket, and the scenario today, pertaining in particular tothe squad touring England, is not very different

Partab Ramchand21-Jun-2002By and large, the bowling has almost always been the bigger problem inIndian cricket, and the scenario today, pertaining in particular tothe squad touring England, is not very different. As the team preparesto take on the hosts and Sri Lanka in a tri-series, to be followed bya four-Test series against England, there are question marks over thebowling even as confidence reigns that the experienced and giftedbatting line-up will come good even with the problems at the verytop of the order.
© CricInfoEnglish conditions, as a rule, favour seam bowlers, but it has beenproved time and again that even a good spinner can be among thewickets. This is true in the case of Indian bowlers as well. Over thelast 70 years, the list of Indians who have done well in England makesfor interesting reading. Among those who have operated the new ball,Mohammad Nissar, Amar Singh, Lala Amarnath, Raman Surendranath, KapilDev, Roger Binny, Chetan Sharma, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasadhave enjoyed a fair share of success. Given the strong tradition ofIndian spin, it is always on the cards that bowlers giving the ball ahealthy tweak will be just as successful, as proved by the exploits ofVinoo Mankad, Ghulam Ahmed, Subash Gupte, BS Chandrasekhar, DilipDoshi and Maninder Singh. So, on the face of it, at least some of the six principal bowlers inthe current squad seem to have a reasonable chance of success. Theyare four seamers Ajit Agarkar, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan and TinuYohannan – and two spinners in Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. Infact, with spin being India’s forte, it may even seem a gamble to tourEngland with just two such bowlers. But as I pointed out in a recentcolumn, spin to win may no longer be the Indian mantra overseas. The last three Test victories abroad in Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and theWest Indies were all principally shaped by the fast men. The truth ofthe matter is that the overseas record of Kumble and Harbhajan doesnot inspire confidence. Given this, the bulk of the work could well bedone by the four seam bowlers. And while no one can deny that they areall game triers and will not be short on stamina, they are certainlyinexperienced. All of them are making their first full tour ofEngland, and Agarkar alone has some experience of bowling ininternational matches in England, having been a member of the 1999World Cup team. For inspiration, though, they need look no furtherthan Venkatesh Prasad, who made his Test debut in England in 1996 andtook 15 wickets in three Tests.Kumble, on the other hand, is making his third full tour of England, besides being a member of the 1999 World Cup side. He has also had acouple of seasons with Northamptonshire in the county championship, and the astonishing fact is that while he has performed commendablyfor the county enough for him to be selected as Wisden Cricketer ofthe Year in 1996 his deeds for the country have been a letdown. In 1990 he was a rookie, making his debut in the second Test atManchester. By 1996, however, he was very much the lynchpin of theattack. But he still had a nightmarish series, finishing with justfive wickets in the three Tests at an average of 66.80. Despite hisimpressive overall record 319 wickets from 70 Tests at an average offractionally under 28 Kumble has continued to remain an enigmaoverseas, and it can only be hoped that he makes the most of theopportunity the current tour gives him to prove that he can be aneffective bowler abroad.
© CricInfoMuch the same fears abound as far as Harbhajan is concerned. The offspinner is a class act at home, but overseas he has been reduced to abowler of near club standard. He and Kumble did tie up the Englishmenin knots in the home series six months ago, but it will be a whollydifferent – and much more difficult – proposition in England. Twice in 1951-52, and again 30 years later English batsmen have flounderedin India, only to turn the tables on them a few months later in homeconditions.Given the inexperience of the seam attack and the ineffectiveness ofthe spinners, perhaps Sourav Ganguly will have to do a lot of bowlinghimself. He is the kind who may be able to make the ball talk inEnglish conditions. Not many may know that in his memorable debutseries six years ago, besides heading the batting figures, he alsotopped the bowling averages – six wickets in two matches at an averageof 20.83. He was also fairly successful during the World Cup threeyears ago.Given this background, as well as his skill and experience, it may notbe a surprise if he fancies himself as almost a frontline bowler. Wemay well see him bowl fairly long spells, though how many wickets willfall to him is open to question. All in all, it is not a bowling line-up to inspire confidence, especially after what the England batsmen have just accomplishedagainst Sri Lanka, scoring 500-plus in three successive innings, thefirst time they have achieved this feat in 125 years of Test cricket. The onus will again fall on the batsmen to run up the kind of totalsthat would ensure at least a draw. For, at the moment, India winningthe Test series is just as uphill a task as it was for England to winin this country six months ago. They didn’t have the bowlers to win inIndia, and we don’t seem to have the bowlers to win in England. Afterall, as is well-known, it is sharp bowling and not tall scoring thatwins matches.

Arsenal want Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves

Many Wolves fans have been flocking to a transfer update involving Ruben Neves.

As per The Times, Arsenal have begun work on a deal to try and sign the former FC Porto midfielder in the summer window. He has been made available for sale in order to try and raise some funds for the incoming Bruno Lage to spend in the market.

Neves has been a key player for the Midlands club over the past few seasons, from being part of the squad which won promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and then being a mainstay in the team ever since.

The Portugal international averaged more tackles (2.4), interceptions (1.8), shots (1.9), passes (54.9) and long balls (5.3) per game in the top flight than both Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho in the 2020/21 campaign (WhoScored), showing just how important he is to the heart of their midfield.

It is not a surprise that many Wolves fans do not want him to leave, especially to go to a rival Premier League club.

Wolves fans react to Neves transfer update

These Wolves supporters flocked to the transfer update as it was shared on Twitter, with one describing Neves’ potential departure as a ‘terrible idea’:

Fit-again Tudor aims for Test return

Alex Tudor is aiming to convince England’s selectors that he is fit for next week’s second Test against India at Trent Bridge

Stephen Lamb31-Jul-2002Alex Tudor is aiming to convince England’s selectors that he is fit for next week’s second Test against India at Trent Bridge. The Surrey seamer missed England’s 170-run opening Test victory at Lord’s with shin splints sustained during the NatWest Series final defeat by India a fortnight earlier.Tudor played for Surrey against Essex at Guildford this week in the Norwich Union League, and hopes to make the team in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy semi-final against Yorkshire at Headingley. It remains to be seen whether Tudor can convince the selectors that that he is fit for a five-day game, particularly as both Simon Jones (side strain) and Andrew Flintoff (groin), have niggles.England captain Nasser Hussain has insisted that any player returning from injury must prove their fitness in a first-class match, and Surrey’s next game starts on the same day as the Test, on August 8 against Sussex at Hove.Tudor was made man-of-the-match for his performance against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, only to miss the Lord’s game because of the injury.”I was very frustrated to miss out on the Test match,” Tudor said. “I wanted to use this Test towards establishing myself in the England team.”I was lucky enough to get the man-of-the-match award in the previous Test atOld Trafford and got drafted into the one-day squad and I wanted to be part ofthe first Test against India at Lord’s.”It was disappointing I wasn’t able to do that, but hopefully the injury hascleared up now and if things go well maybe I’ll get in for the next Test.”

Southampton submit Djuricic offer

A major update has emerged on Southampton’s pursuit of a Serie A midfielder, it could lead to an unforgivable blunder by Martin Semmens.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Southampton have submitted an offer to Serie A side Sassuolo for midfielder Filip Djuricic as they attempt to re-sign the Serbian international six years on from his loan spell at St. Mary’s in 2015.

The report claims Southampton’s Premier League rivals West Ham have joined them in their pursuit of Djuricic, who has one year left on his contract at Sassuolo. However, it does not state how much has been offered or whether or not Sassuolo are open to cashing in on Djuricic in the coming months.

Earlier this year, Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi voiced his frustration at Djuricic’s “wrong attitude” prior to a Serie A match with Sampdoria. He told Sport Mob:

“He had a wrong attitude with me before the Sampdoria game. He trained well after what happened, but it was fair to leave him out today. Rules must be respected. He is the player I’ve coached the most during my career.“Not only he did apologise, but he also wanted to join us. He is a regular starter, but when a player commits a mistake, a coach must intervene like he would do with his own son.” Semmens blunder

Southampton CEO Martin Semmens could be heading for an unforgivable blunder with this prospective deal for Djuricic. This could be a major error by the club as Djuricic has not proven that he is good enough to improve Southampton’s team in the years since he left from his loan stint in 2015. Semmens should, instead, be looking to avoid this deal and he should stop himself from making a mistake in the summer window.

Djuricic played nine games for Southampton in the Premier League in the 2014/15 campaign and failed to provide a single goal or assist, averaging a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.40. This proved that he was not good enough to make an impact in England at that point in his career and his statistics for Sassuolo do not suggest that there has been a major improvement. In the last six Serie A seasons, he has racked up 12 goals and 13 assists whilst playing for various clubs and he has never averaged a WhoScored rating higher than 6.75.

The £8.1m-rated flop is also at a tricky age for a signing. He is at the age, 29, where he has little resale value and he would not be a player Southampton could develop and then sell on for a profit at a later date. This means that he needs to be of the requisite quality to come in and make an immediate, big, impact in the Premier League. Given the aforementioned statistics, he does not have that quality and Semmens should pull out of any deal to avoid making a massive blunder.

AND in other news, Semmens could land Southampton’s dream Danny Ings heir in £2k-p/w dynamo…

Villa must avoid selling Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa would be risking Dean Smith’s wrath by selling Douglas Luiz this summer amid a recent transfer update.

What’s the story?

The 23-year-old has pretty much been a permanent fixture in Dean Smith’s side since making the switch to Villa Park, already making 76 appearances for the first-team, including playing 33 out of the 38 Premier League games last season.

His form even earned him international honours, picking up his first couple of senior caps for Brazil, and so it’s been no surprise then that his market value has absolutely sky-rocketed, now standing at £31.5m according to Transfermarkt.

Now, BBC Sport claim that Serie A giants AS Roma are interested in signing Luiz this summer, amid the Italian side’s offer for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka being rejected.

Dean Smith would be fuming

While Southampton star James Ward-Prowse would be an upgrade on Luiz, selling the Brazilian outright this summer would be a foolish mistake by the Villa hierarchy.

Speaking last summer, The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans, said of him: “He’s an absolute joy to watch now and I never thought I would be saying that. Villa have got a fantastic player in Douglas Luiz now, he looks like an absolute star, he could have played in that Man United team.

“He was better than (Paul) Pogba, I thought. I thought he was brilliant, hardly did anything wrong, hardly put a foot wrong. He won so many interceptions and made so many important blocks. When he gets the ball, he passes it nicely. He’s the best player in that Villa team at the moment because it’s just not working for John McGinn.”

Given the fact he played such an integral role in Villa’s superb Premier League campaign last season, it would be absurd for the club to let him go, especially without any replacements having been signed first.

If Ward-Prowse does arrive, then perhaps the argument changes about potentially cashing in on him and recouping some money, but the fact is, with the owners supposedly backing Smith to the hilt in the transfer market, there should be no need to sell.

Luiz has been a regular starter for Smith, and the Villa boss would surely be fuming were the club to sell him to Roma.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has dropped an update on this Villa man…
