Celtic: Hoops linked with Hannes Wolf

Celtic have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Hannes Wolf, according to German tabloid Bild, relayed by Bulinews.com.

The Lowdown: Wolf profiled

Wolf is primarily a left-footed attacking midfielder who can also play on either wing and has made 180 senior club appearances.

He joined Monchengladbach from RB Leipzig this summer following a successful loan spell in a deal worth £8.55m, taking fees to sign Wolf during his career over £20m. [Transfermarkt]

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 22-year-old has made just one appearance in Monchengladbach’s last 10 Bundesliga games, and so it seems as if a January exit is on the cards.

The Latest: Hoops keen

Bulinews.com relayed an update from German tabloid Bild, who claimed that Wolf could be one of a number of players to leave Monchengladbach in the New Year.

They suggest that he’s not in Adi Hutter’s plans, with Celtic, Trabzonspor and Rapid Wien all showing an interest.

The Verdict: Needed?

The Hoops could well bolster their midfield and attacking ranks in the New Year with three Japanese signings, and should they arrive in Scotland, Wolf may not be needed.

Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi are Ange Postecoglou’s midfield targets, according to Sky Sports, while forward Daizen Maeda could also be brought in over the coming weeks.

Should those moves materialise, Postecoglou would have a plethora of midfield and attacking options, so the club could be better off looking at a new left-back to rival Greg Taylor instead of looking at Wolf, with the likes of Callum Styles and Aaron Hickey recently linked.

Browne stars as New Zealand wallop Pakistan

Pakistan Women ended their World Twenty20 campaign with a spineless batting display against New Zealand Women

Cricinfo staff10-May-2010
ScorecardIt was a disappointing end to Pakistan’s campaign•Getty ImagesPakistan Women ended their World Twenty20 campaign with a spineless batting display against New Zealand Women. It was a dead rubber, with New Zealand having qualified, but the match lasted a total of just 28.2 overs as Pakistan limped to 65 for 9 before New Zealand raced home within nine overs. Nicola Brown, the right-arm seamer, was the star.Browne’s four-wicket burst reduced Pakistan to a pathetic 30 for 7. Browne kept the runs down as well, conceding 15 off four overs and Kate Broadmore was just as parsimonious, giving just 12 off her allotted overs. The second half of Pakistan’s innings was all about survival, yet the last three wickets managed to bat out the 20 overs. Only three batsmen crossed double figures for Pakistan.New Zealand got the chase off to a rocking start, knocking 45 off the first five overs before Sophie Devine departed. Pakistan did manage to pick up four wickets though, and it could have been a more even contest had they doubled their score.Pakistan failed to register a single win in the competition. At the same time in St Lucia, the men’s team set up a semi-final spot with a convincing win over South Africa.Aimee Watkins, the New Zealand captain, said it would be a challenge facing West Indies in St Lucia for a place in the final. “They are the kind of team that are so unpredictable at Twenty20, one day they could make 80 all out and another 180 for four so I’m not taking the upcoming fixture lightly,” she said. “Hopefully they’ve watched today’s game and seen what kind of a bowling attack we’ve got in our side.”

Losing is becoming a habit – Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle was disappointed with his side’s inability to win games against South Africa, but the West Indies captain was happy with his team’s effort and the spirit within the group

Cricinfo staff01-Jun-2010Despite losing six matches in a row to South Africa during the ongoing series, the West Indies captain Chris Gayle has said he was happy with his team’s effort and the spirit within the group. Gayle also said it was imperative that West Indies didn’t reach a stage where they “don’t know how to win games anymore”.”I’m basically disappointed that we’ve lost so many games but, generally, everyone gets on well with each other,” Gayle said after the fourth ODI which his side lost off the final ball. “The one downside is to get that win, but we’ve worked extremely hard, preparation-wise. It’s just unfortunate that we are not getting the results out there in the middle.”That defeat was West Indies’ fourth consecutive loss in the ODI series, following a 2-0 drubbing in the Twenty20s. Gayle felt his side was doing the basics right, but was struggling with the mental aspect of the game. “It is a mental situation we’ve actually reached now, but we have to come out of the situation as quickly as possible because, unfortunately, losing is becoming a habit and it’s a bit difficult to get out of. That means that you don’t know how to win games anymore, so we need to try and turn things around.”There was speculation that the side’s excessive partying had a part to play in the poor on-field displays, but Gayle denied the claim. “Those days are over, to be honest with you. We are playing so much cricket, we don’t really have time to do that,” he said. “But guys need to be free. We don’t want to put any burden on anyone.”Everybody are big men and we don’t want to treat them like kids, but at the same time, the conditions are very hot and you don’t expect anyone to be partying,” Gayle said. “We are past that stage. We have been criticised for that over the last couple of months and years and we’re just trying to turn things around. We are making a lot of sacrifices in every department.”Despite the run of losses, Gayle was happy leading the side but admitted it was time to start grooming a successor. “At the end of the day, the way I look at it, I’m not going to be captain forever. At some stage, you are going to have a new captain, but I’m going to look at the situation. It’s just one of those things and I’m sure they will be looking to groom someone at some given time. I’m not sure when (but) I’m really all for it and giving it my best shot.”

Newcastle tracking Anthony Martial

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Manchester United centre-forward Anthony Martial…

What’s the talk?

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope has issued a key claim on the situation, providing some hope that a deal can be done this month.

He tweeted: “Re Anthony Martial & NUFC… Man Utd say reluctant to let players go (for now) because of Covid, but I’m told Newcastle are monitoring situation. Martial perhaps wasn’t type high on list pre January, but Wilson injury has changed thinking & increased urgency. One to watch.”

Fans will be excited

Newcastle fans will surely be excited with this update for multiple reasons. Firstly. it shows that PIF are not willing to take a gamble with Wilson by simply waiting for him to return from his lengthy injury. He is the club’s top scorer and losing his quality for any period of time is a huge blow for the Magpies, which is why fans will be buzzing with any attempts to bring in a new striker.

Wilson has scored six Premier League goals this season and Allan Saint-Maximin (four) is the only other player at the club with more than one to his name in 2021/22. This shows the worrying lack of quality at the top end of the pitch when it comes to taking chances, so the prospective signing of Martial could excite the Toon Army.

The Frenchman is a proven scorer in the English top flight and could come in to score the goals to help Newcastle avoid relegation to the Championship. He has found the back of the net 56 times for Manchester United in the Premier League, with four seasons of scoring nine or more goals in the division. In 268 games for the Red Devils in all competitions, he has netted 79 goals and provided 50 assists, showing that he can certainly make an impact in the final third.

This suggests that Martial could come in and be the focal point up top for the Magpies whilst Wilson is sidelined, before potentially partnering the 29-year-old upon his return. Newcastle fans could get excited by this prospect given the pair’s respective goalscoring records, as they could form a lethal partnership to provide match-winning quantities of goals in the team’s battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

It is now over to Nick Hammond and Eddie Howe to ensure that they can get a deal over the line for the French attacker before the end of the month…

Benkenstein maintains Durham's momentum

18-Jun-2010
ScorecardIan Blackwell took a brilliant return catch as Durham restricted Yorkshire•Getty ImagesDurham consolidated third place in Friends Provident t20 North when they cruised to a six-wicket home win against Yorkshire. After the visitors struggled to 131 for 8, Durham were rocking on 1 for 2 when Tino Best removed both openers in his first over. But Ross Taylor and Dale Benkenstein followed their unbroken partnership of 117 against Leicestershire on Monday by putting on 101 in 11 overs for the third wicket. Taylor fell for 49 when trying to cut Adil Rashid, who then had Ben Stokes brilliantly caught at deep midwicket by Best. However, Benkenstein remained unbeaten on 57 – which included four sixes – as Durham got home with 4.5 overs to spare.Inept batting saw the Yorkshire innings stagnate after they reached 54 for 1 after six overs. The next five overs produced only 13 runs for the loss of three more wickets and it was left to Anthony McGrath to try to salvage something from the wreckage. But he was unable to reproduce the previous evening’s form in the win against Lancashire as he scored only 16 in his first nine overs at the crease and finished on 34 not out off 34 balls. With his brother Steve still resting because of a back problem, Ben Harmison played a key part for Durham. He started Yorkshire’s slide by holding a fine, tumbling catch when running in from long-on to get rid of Herschelle Gibbs for 10. Harmison also helped to throttle the Tykes with two tight overs in mid-innings, in which he also bowled Jacques Rudolph. The innings stalled after being given a good start by skipper Andrew Gale, who drove sixes off Mitch Claydon and Albie Morkel in scoring 28 off 16 balls. Ian Blackwell tightened Durham’s grip by bowling Gerard Brophy through an attempted sweep and holding a superb, left-handed return catch to see off Jonny Bairstow.Durham fielded a team with nine potential bowlers and Phil Mustard changed the bowling almost every over until Blackwell came on for the ninth. He bowled straight through his four-over allocation to take 2 for 16.After struggling when brought in for the previous night’s match, Best was ecstatic when Mustard miscued to mid-wicket then Blackwell’s off stump went flying. But Taylor immediately clipped Best through square leg for four then Benkenstein lifted Steve Patterson over the rope at midwicket as the third wicket pair took control.

Phil Hay gives key Leeds injury update

Leeds United trio Pascal Struijk, Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford could all return from injury to face West Ham this weekend, journalist Phil Hay has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Leeds suffer injury-hit season

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have experienced a hugely taxing campaign, hovering ominously above the Premier League relegation zone and suffering injuries to key men seemingly every week.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips and Bamford are just two of the important figures who have missed chunks of action and it has played a huge part in the Whites’ struggles.

Leeds visit West Ham in the league on Sunday afternoon and it finally looks as though some positive injury news has emerged.

The Latest: Positive update emerges

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Hay confirmed that Struijk, Rodrigo and Bamford are all in contention to feature at the London Stadium this weekend:

“Bamford, Rodrigo and Struijk could all be involved, which is clearly a big and overdue boost.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-31/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Massive news

This is a much-needed positive for Leeds, with Bamford’s return clearly the biggest boost, considering his importance to this side in recent years.

The 28-year-old is still the Whites’ joint-second-top scorer in the league this season with two goals in 2021/22, despite only starting five matches in the competition.

The lack of goals from other sources has had a devastating effect on a side who scored three or more goals on ten separate occasions in the league last season – they’ve only managed that once this term.

Rodrigo’s return will also add required firepower to the squad, while Struijk’s ability to play at centre-back and in midfield means his comeback will also be welcome, giving Bielsa more choices and an ability to rotate.

World Cup star Nicky Shaw retires

Nicky Shaw, the England fast-bowler, has retired from international cricket at the age of 28

Cricinfo staff10-Jul-2010Nicky Shaw, the England fast-bowler, has retired from international cricket at the age of 28.Shaw was the Player of the Match in the 2009 World Cup final for taking 4 for 34 to help England defeat New Zealand in Sydney. It was the highlight of a career that brought 46 wickets in 70 ODIs, in addition to 11 wickets in five Tests.”Whilst I have enjoyed my time playing, I feel it is now time to retire from the international game ahead of my move to Australia,” she explained. Isa Guha replaced her for the ODI series against New Zealand which began on Saturday.Shaw made her debut in 1999 aged 17 and also featured in England’s Ashes-winning side in 2008 and the team that won the World Twenty20 at Lord’s last year.Yet the 50-over World Cup final was her dream performance as she only came into the side as a late replacement when Jenny Gunn suffered a calf injury on the morning of the match. Her four wickets helped England sink New Zealand and take the title. “I started the day crying, and I finished the day crying,” she said.

Wolves agree Chiquinho transfer deal

With only one incoming signing secured for Wolves in the January transfer window so far which saw Japanese midfielder Hayao Kawabe join the Midlands club, it seems as though the Old Gold could be set to welcome a new face to their ranks.

What’s the news?

According to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in a recent Twitter post, Wolves have agreed a deal to sign Estoril attacker Chiquinho on a permanent basis for a fee of €3.5m (£2.9m).

He said: “Agreement completed between Wolverhampton and Estoril for Portuguese striker Chiquinho. Permanent deal for €3.5m plus €1.5m bonuses confirmed. Wolves Deal subject to medical – Chiquinho will be in England today in order to complete his move.”

Lage will be buzzing

Having made a total of 84 appearances for Estoril at senior and youth level, the 21-year-old winger has managed to rack up a total of 20 goals and ten assists along the way, highlighting the attacking capabilities he has at a fairly young age.

Chiquinho’s performances in the Portuguese league with Estoril this season have earned him an overall rating of 6.77/10 from WhoScored, which would place him as the sixth-highest rated outfield Wolves player in the Premier League at the moment.

With the likes of Francisco Trincao and Hwang Hee-chan only currently on loan deals at the Midlands club and the constant speculation surrounding Adama Traore’s future as a Wolves player, signing Chiquinho could be a great piece of transfer business from the club.

He is a young prospect that has the potential to grow and develop his game in the Premier League, which would surely please manager Bruno Lage if the previously mentioned current attacking options end up leaving.

Given the significant number of Portuguese players in Wolves’ squad at the moment, as well as Lage and his coaching staff, this will presumably help Chiquinho settle into his surroundings at the Midlands club swiftly.

Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of game time Chiquinho will be given at Molineux before the end of the season and before any potential transfer business takes place next summer which could then have a direct impact on the minutes he’d receive heading into next term.

Either way, it’s still an exciting deal for Wolves to make for such a young prodigy that could potentially be the next Pedro Neto at Molineux; a young winger that has the capacity to score and assist goals on a regular basis.

If he can make anywhere near a similar contribution in the Midlands, Lage would be delighted.

NCC unlucky, draws dominate second round

A round-up of the second round of matches of the Sri Lanka Under 23 Youth Tournament Division 1

Sa'adi Thawfeeq19-Jul-2010Group ANondescripts CC was extremely unlucky to miss out on victory by a mere one run in their Under-23 Youth Division I tournament match against Navy SC at Welisara. Set a target of 110 for victory off 14 overs, NCC ended up on 109 for 6 and thus had to be content with only first-innings points. The offspin of Umesh Udayanga (5-63) and the slow left-arm orthodox bowling of Roshan Wijenayake (5-33) left NCC with a small target to chase in the fourth innings. However luck was not on their side. For NCC, former Sri Lanka U-19 cricketer Rishan Kavinda’s century and Angelo Perera’s stroke-filled knock of 85 enabled them to gain a useful first-innings lead of 94.None of the other matches came anywhere close to achieving a winning result, with all of them ending in draws. The 18-year-old cricketer from the South, Shehan Jayasuriya of Prince of Wales, gave Moors SC a convincing lead on the first innings against Burgher RC at Braybrooke Place. Jayasuriya scored a brilliant century as Moors declared at 387 for 9 in reply to BRC’s 179.The offspin of Maduka Liyanapathiranage helped Chilaw Marians to a close 37-run first-innings advantage over Bloomfield at Reid Avenue. Bloomfield were well placed at 156 for 5 overnight and set to overhaul Chilaw Marians’ first innings score of 259, but thanks to Liyanapathiranage’s probing offspin, they managed only 222. The only consolation for Bloomfield was Amal Atapattu who took eight wickets in the match with his left-arm spin.Group BEighteen-year-old former St Sebastian’s slow left-arm bowler Anuk de Alwis (6-74) bowled Moratuwa SC to first-innings points over Seeduwa Raddoluwa CC. In another match Ragama CC got the better of Colombo Colts CC also on the first innings.

Tottenham: Paratici to give AC Milan answer on Tanganga ‘this weekend’

Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici will give an answer to AC Milan over a move for Japhet Tanganga ‘this weekend’.

The Lowdown: Tanganga under Conte

The 22-year-old has been used by Antonio Conte on a number of occasions in recent months, turning out in a variety of roles.

He’s played as a left-back, centre-back, right-back and even right midfielder, with his latest appearance coming against Leicester City in a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Tanganga is under contract until 2025 but has been linked with a move to Italy, and it seems as if Spurs are mulling over a possible transfer in the final days of the January window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Next 48 hours key

Sports Witness shared a link to a story on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, revealing the clubs are in talks and Paratici will give an answer ‘this weekend’.

AC Milan are thought to be ‘working’ on a move and would prefer a loan deal over a permanent one, with the next 48 hours seemingly vital.

The Verdict: Reinforcements needed first?

Sending Tanganga to Milan for the second half of the season may well be good for the youngster – it has reinvigorated Fikayo Tomori’s career, for example. However, Spurs could do with bringing players in before shipping any out on loan.

Conte has just five senior centre-backs to choose from, one being Cristian Romero who is injured. Joe Rodon also doesn’t seem to be fancied by the Italian, who has moved Ben Davies into a central role from left-back.

Spurs are thought to be keen on Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, and should they pip Newcastle to the Brazilian, then perhaps an exit for Tanganga, who Gary Neville called ‘really special’, could be on the cards.

In other news: Spurs make 11th-hour attempt to dramatically scupper rivals’ move for £40.5m-rated ‘beast’.
