Spurs fans split over Tielemans update

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have dropped their interest in AS Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans, per Football Insider, leaving fans split over the news.

The Belgium international spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester City, with Spurs linked with a move in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 club have quoted Spurs a price of over £40m for the 22-year-old, who the Foxes would like to sign on a permanent basis.

However, the north London club are said to believe that Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele and Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso are higher-quality targets this summer as they bid to make their first signing since 2018.

Indeed, The Guardian claim that Spurs are in talks with Lyon over a deal for the France international, while Lo Celso is said to be keen on working under Mauricio Pochettino in north London.

Nevertheless, fans are split over this decision, some believing that Tielemans, having proven himself in the Premier League with three goals and five assists in 13 games, would have been a shrewd addition, and others pleased that Tottenham are focusing their efforts on Lo Celso and Ndombele instead.

Ozan Kabak is a far more suitable signing for Manchester United than Harry Maguire

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Italian publication Milan News 24, Manchester United are ready to rival Serie A giants Milan for the signature of Stuttgart defender Ozan Kabak.

What’s the word?

The report claims United’s representatives are expected to meet with the centre-back’s entourage in order to make him an offer comparable to the one already put on the table by Milan.

German outlet Kicker further reported that along with the Red Devils, Premier League rivals West Ham are also in the running to sign the 19-year-old.

Culture fit

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are firmly in the race to sign Leicester and England powerhouse Harry Maguire, and there have been claims that the Foxes will demand around £90m to part ways with their star man.

Now, Maguire has proven himself to be an excellent centre-back in the Premier League and has delivered some very impressive performances. But paying what would be a world record fee for a defender for him? United have been riddled with constant issues of overpaying for players both in the transfer fee involved and the wages it takes to keep them there.

The pressure of a price tag can often be a huge burden – just look at how Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez have performed at Old Trafford. But in Kabak, United could snare a highly-rated prospect for far cheaper and arguably with a whole load of room for improvement.

Indeed, Stuttgart’s sporting director and former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger seems to think he’s a born leader, saying: “It’s incredible how worldy-wise he is for his age. It’s astonishing. I see him every day and am amazed at how he mature he is. He wants to know everything; he wants to learn German right away and understand everything. That’s the kind of attitude we need. He’s already a role model, despite his age.”

One of the biggest issues for United is the culture in the dressing room, where flamboyant characters and personalities have not proven to be willing to place everything on the line for the cause. In his 15 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, Kabak embraced the relegation dogfight his side were in and stepped up to the plate with three goals from centre-back.

So whilst Maguire might be the more glamorous name, Kabak’s presence both on and off the pitch could crucially make him the right fit at the right time for United this summer.

Liverpool Transfer Roundup: Pepe update, Moreno contract offer, PL duo after Mignolet

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool may not need to add a lot of names this summer, as their current squad has already proven it can compete with the best by winning the Champions League last season. However, that does not necessarily mean they will not be interested in a good deal could it be made. Today’s Reds transfer roundup includes an update on a Ligue 1 star, news on an outgoing left-back and interest in one of the club’s goalkeepers.

Pepe rumours “pure lies”

The Liverpool Echo is reporting that the rumours suggesting Liverpool are interested in Nicolas Pépé are “pure lies”. Speculation in France had suggested that the Anfield outfit were in talks with Lille, but the Echo have rubbished those claims.

Moreno turned down new contract

Alberto Moreno was offered a bumper contract to stay on Merseyside during this transfer window, once again according to the Liverpool Echo. However, Moreno turned down the deal after becoming Andy Robertson’s back-up, and the Spaniard now wants to pursue a fresh challenge.

Palace and Brighton want Mignolet

According to the London Evening Standard, Crystal Palace are interested in Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The 31-year-old is reported to be available for £8m. Brighton are also looking at the former Sunderland man.

Celtic striker Vakoun Bayo suffers pre-season injury setback

[ad_pod ]

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that striker Vakoun Bayo is suffering from a hamstring problem, speaking to official club outlet Celtic TV.

What’s the story?

Bayo signed for the club back in January but missed most of the second half of last season because of injury, featuring in just a few minutes of first-team action.

He returned to training for pre-season and looked sharp in a friendly against Austrian side Wiener SC on Saturday, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

Lennon though has confirmed he again has a hamstring issue, telling Celtic TV:

“Unfortunately we have to wait and see how he is. He felt a little twinge on the hamstring. He was looking really good as well.”

With the club left waiting on his status, the player is now a doubt for next Tuesday’s season opener away to FK Sarajevo in UEFA Champions League qualifying.

Will Celtic miss him?

Striker Odsonne Edouard is, thankfully for the Hoops, fit and healthy heading into the new season and played their most recent match against Swiss side St Gallen on Tuesday.

Leigh Griffiths, who missed the second part of last term because of personal problems, is now back and available for selection too, hitting red hot form in pre-season friendlies.

The Scotland international has netted a fantastic six goals so far in pre-season matches, including four against St Gallen’s U21s during a closed door game this week.

So the Hoops are covered in the striking department, but it’s still important for Bayo to get serious competitive action under his belt as soon as possible, especially since he was apparently impressing Lennon.

Arsenal Transfer Roundup: Mariano Diaz offered, Saliba deal close, Fenerbahce play down Ozil move

Tuesday’s Arsenal transfer roundup included interest in a rival’s midfielder, Serie A eyes on a Polish youngster and the pursuit of a Gabonese international. Today’s edition revolves around the Gunners being offered a La Liga ace, a deal for a Frenchman reportedly being close and the future of a former Schalke playmaker.

Real offer Mariano Diaz to Arsenal

According to The Daily Mirror, Arsenal have been given the opportunity to sign Real Madrid’s Mariano Diaz in a cut-price deal. The North London outfit have been told they can land the former Lyon forward for just £18m.

Saliba deal close

BBC Sport is reporting that Saint-Etienne’s William Saliba is close to sealing a move to the Emirates Stadium. The deal for the 18-year-old will be worth €30m (£27m). The fee will be paid in instalments, and the centre-back will return to Les Verts on loan next season.

Fenerbahce can’t afford Ozil

Fenerbahce will not be making a move for World Cup winner Mesut Ozil this summer, they have said in a statement. On their official website, the Super Lig side explained, “Mesut Özil, with his career and stance successfully represents our country abroad, is an important value known with the identity of Fenerbahce. However, Fenerbahce does not have an initiative for Mesut Ozil. Under the current economic conditions, such a step is not possible for both parties”.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa proved right after Patrick Bamford’s telling comment

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has admitted that his “body’s confused” in an interview via Leeds Live following the pre-season trip to Australia, and it may well be a case of ‘I told you so’ for manager Marcelo Bielsa.

On the chalkboard

The Argentine is known for being meticulous in his planning and his training practices, and he is reported to have been at loggerheads with those upstairs at Elland Road with the prospect of his players having a 48-hour round trip to the southern hemisphere – as well as two matches down under – just a few weeks before the Championship season gets underway.

His reservations over the long-distance journey have been further shown by the fact that only 16 of his players travelled, with the majority of the club’s new signings – aside from Jack Harrison – remaining in England so he can ensure they are preparing in the right way for the 2019/20 campaign.

Bielsa could be in Oz for as little as 36 hours as he plans to take charge of the clash against Manchester United on Wednesday, but as of yet is undecided on whether he will actually remain in Australia for the fixture against the Western Sydney Wanderers in Paramatta on July 20.

Bittersweet for Bielsa

While the South American boss has likely been proved right with his concerns, he now has to analyse how it could affect his players ahead of an important season.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

If Bamford is suffering now following the long flight, he could easily suffer from the same issue when the squad return to England later this month.

Bielsa’s game-plan demands hard work and pressing, and as a result he needs his team to be in peak physical condition when they face Bristol City at Ashton Gate in their opener on August 4.

This trip will be viewed as completely unneeded from his point of view even if it is a positive for the club, and the 63-year-old must now do everything he can to ensure it doesn’t have any long-lasting effects.

Arsenal fans rip into Alex Iwobi after comments made about Wilfried Zaha deal

[ad_pod ]

Alex Iwobi has been at the centre of an attack from Arsenal fans on Twitter who have questioned the winger’s mentality after comments he made about a possible deal for Wilfried Zaha.

In an exclusive report from The Sun, Iwobi claimed he was ready to compete for his place but would leave if he didn’t get opportunities to play. He said:

“I am up for the fight but the only time I would consider leaving is if I am not playing as much as I would like to.”

However, the fact the Nigerian was ready to battle for a spot doesn’t seem to have been digested by a host of supporters who took to social media to lay into him for what he said.

One fan said the fact he could leave was the best news ever whilst another Gooner claimed Iwobi had embarrassed himself.

The 23-year-old was also branded as useless as a further fan said he had a loser mentality.

Iwobi had a fairly average season in 2018/19, scoring just three league goals in 35 games as well as claiming six assists.

Zaha, meanwhile, has been the subject of a £40m bid from Arsenal this summer.

Rangers fans hail Joe Aribo following Europa League goal

[ad_pod ]

Rangers recorded a 2-0 win over Progres Niederkorn on Thursday night to take control of the Europa League second-round qualifying tie.

Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo scored the goals for the Scottish champions, who will fancy their chances of finishing the job in Luxembourg.

It will not come as a surprise to learn that the Rangers fans were in high spirits after the match following a decent performance and strong result.

And a number were keen to pay tribute to Aribo, who made the breakthrough in the 20th minute with a super goal.

The 23-year-old left Charlton Athletic at the end of last season before ultimately signing a four-year deal with Steven Gerrard’s team.

Check out what happened when Thogden mixed with some of Montenegro’s craziest ultras in the video below…

Aribo already looks to be making a big impression at Ibrox.

And plenty of Rangers fans took to social media on Thursday night to reveal their overwhelmingly positive views on the midfielder.

West Brom fans react to the news Albian Ajeti deal is likely to prove difficult

[ad_pod ]The Championship season is already well underway after the opening weekend of fixtures were complete on Monday night.West Brom began their season in winning style by defeating Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest in their own back yard but even despite the victory, manager Slaven Bilic is desperate to add four more signings before the window comes to a close on Thursday evening.Matt Wilson of the Express and Star has provided a latest update which hasn’t pleased too many fans at the Hawthorns…

Earlier in the summer, West Brom were reportedly after Basel striker Albian Ajeti but his likely wage demands were enough to put the club off pursuing the deal any further.

Though, it seems as if that interest has remained but any deal even more unlikely as his club have progressed further in the Champions League after defeating PSV.

Meanwhile, Premier League outfit West Ham have thrown a spanner in the works with reports linking them with an £8m move for the striker.

A striker appears to be high on the agenda at the Hawthorns after Dwight Gayle returned to Newcastle United following the expiry of his loan whilst Salomon Rondon re-joined his former boss Rafa Benitez in China.

Many fans are rather unhappy at the situation the club finds themselves in with just a couple of days left to go in the transfer market.

One supporter said it was the ‘same old Albion’ which was similar to another’s view that the club always leave business so late to buy a striker.

An individual even labelled their dealings, or lack of, as a ‘mess’.

Southampton fans fearing relegation after disappointing defeat to Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Having helped stave off the threat of relegation last season, Ralph Hasenhuttl would no doubt have hoped for a better start to the new Premier League campaign.

The Austrian inspired a revival at St Mary’s after taking over from predecessor Mark Hughes, and splashed the cash in the summer transfer window to bolster his squad.

However, in disappointing fashion, the Saints slipped to a 3-0 defeat to Burnley in their opening game of the Premier League season.

After seeing their side’s abysmal performance at Turf Moor, Southampton fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

[ad_pod ]

Many supporters of the south coast side seemed to fear the worst and worried the campaign would end in relegation – or at the very least a relegation battle – if performances similar to Saturday continued.

Indeed, a few Saints fans insisted they are in for a “long season ahead” and even suggested potentially going down “doesn’t seem that bad”.
