Stuart Broad achieves four-year high in ICC Test bowlers' rankings

The fast bowler has moved seven places to No. 3, a position he last occupied in August 2016

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jul-2020Stuart Broad enjoyed a hugely memorable Test match as England sealed a 2-1 series win over West Indies at Old Trafford. He picked up a 10-wicket match haul, the Player-of-the-Match award, and along the way his 500th Test wicket as well. That performance has also catapulted Broad seven places on the ICC Test bowlers’ rankings, up to No. 3 – a position he last occupied nearly four years ago, in August 2016.Broad is the lone England bowler in the top ten, behind Australia’s Pat Cummins and sandwiched between the New Zealand pair of Neil Wagner (No. 2) and Tim Southee (No. 4). West Indies captain Jason Holder, who took 10 wickets in the three Tests against England at an average of 30.10, completes the top five.Other big movers in the ICC rankings after the England-West Indies series are Rory Burns, who has moved up 13 spots in the Test batting rankings to No. 17, and Ollie Pope, who has gone up 24 places to No. 46.

Ange must finally axe 5/10 Spurs man who gifted Man City the title

Has there been a weirder Premier League game this season than Tottenham Hotspur's clash with Manchester City last night?

Ange Postecoglou's side fell to a 2-0 defeat, but while the Australian was quite irate in his interviews afterwards, you'd be hard-pressed to find a Spurs fan upset with the result.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

The North Londoners knew that if they won or even snatched a draw at home to the treble-winners, they would practically be crowning fierce rivals Arsenal as champions, and while no fan wants to see their side lose, this was no usual game.

That said, the majority of the players put in a display that would have been worthy of at least a point on the night, well, apart from a few, notably Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who practically ended the Gunners' title hopes with his shambolic showing.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg's performance vs Manchester City

The announcement during the week that Mali international Yves Bissouma would miss the last two games of the season through injury meant that Højbjerg was thrown into the starting lineup against City, and while he has proven himself to be a capable Premier League midfielder over the last few years, he was woeful last night.

The 28-year-old was so poor that football.london's Spurs correspondent, Alasdair Gold, gave him the lowest match rating of the entire team on the night, a 5/10.

Explaining his rationale, the respected journalist wrote that the Dane 'sliced a clearance straight to Phil Foden for a big chance in the first half' and then 'gifted City with another chance in the second half from a loose pass', which, while succinct, perfectly captured the midfielder's impact on the match.

However, based on his match statistics, Gold's appraisal of the starter might be too kind.

In his 85 minutes of action, the Spurs dud took 104 touches but maintained a passing accuracy of 86%, registered an expected assist figure of just 0.04, failed to take a single shot, lost five of nine duels, lost the ball 18 times, was dribbled past twice, and made two mistakes which led to shots from City.

In all, the former Southampton star's performance was a disaster, and while he isn't the worst player at the club, he still needs to be sold this summer, especially when there are already players in the team who could take his place next season.

Who could replace Højbjerg

Several midfielders at the club could start ahead of Hojberg next season, although due to the Dane playing most of his games in a defensive midfield role, the two who would be best suited are Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr.

Fortunately for fans, Postecoglou already seems to favour them, giving the Malian 2083 minutes and the Senegalese ace 2036 minutes of action this season compared to the 28-year-old's 1456, but how much better are they?

Well, when looking at the trio's underlying numbers, it is quickly apparent that while the former Bayern Munich midfielder produces more progressive passes per 90 than his two teammates, he comes out second or third best in every other relevant metric, with the former Metz man coming out on top in six, while the other four go the way of the ex Brighton & Hove Albion star.

Ultimately, Postecoglou would be justified in axing Hojberg simply because of his disaster-class performance against City last night.

Yet, the fact that he already has two superior central midfielders in the side, Sarr and Bissouma, means that he simply must get rid of the Dane this summer.

Max Holden scores maiden T20 ton but rain eases Essex pain

Middlesex post 184 for 5 thanks to Holder 102 but only nine balls of chase are possible

ECB Reporters Network27-Aug-2020Max Holden made sure Middlesex didn’t miss their 2019 batting stars by clubbing his maiden T20 hundred but rain thwarted a result against Vitality Blast holders Essex Eagles.Middlesex had lost four of their top five run-scorers from last season’s run to the quarter-finals, but Holden struck a 60-ball 102 to create a new hero. That set Essex 185 to win, but only nine balls of the reply were possible before forecast rain saw the match abandoned. While Middlesex were much-changed from 2019, Essex could call on eight of the side which defeated Worcestershire Rapids in the final at Edgbaston last September.Simon Harmer won the toss and elected to bowl first, but Essex conceded 18 runs off the first over as Steve Eskinazi took Aaron Beard apart with three boundaries through cover before a maximum over midwicket. Matt Quinn took his revenge for team-mate Beard when Eskinazi skied him to Harmer, with Martin Andersson run out after being turned back soon after. That brought Holden and Nick Gubbins together, and for eight overs they dominated with a 71-run stand.Holden was lucky to survive a stumping chance off Dan Lawrence and a Shane Snater drop at long-off, on 2 and 27 respectively. But he moved through the gears as if he was Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone, most notably with a driven push through extra-cover, before taking a liking to Harmer.Firstly, Holden struck back over the South African’s head and into the sightscreen, then slog-swept him into the vacant stands. With AB de Villiers, Dawid Malan, Paul Stirling and Eoin Morgan dominating last year, Holden had been restricted to a single match. He cashed in on a rare appearance here with a 35-ball fifty.Gubbins had provided the run-a-ball glue for Middlesex before he was caught flicking Paul Walter to backward square leg, before Dan Lincoln and John Simpson were each caught at long-on trying to accelerate. But that didn’t halt Holden, who took Harmer for another straight six, with his three figures arriving with an all-along-the-floor cover drive – only 24 balls after he had last raised his bat.His previous highest score in seven Blast matches had been 84 against Somerset. After an elongated mid-innings break, Varun Chopra and Cameron Delport scored 10 runs in nine balls, with Miguel Cummins delivering his first Blast over, before the rain fell.A re-calculated challenge of 156 from 16 was handed to Essex, as the ground staff played the hokey-cokey with the cover around the showers, but the match was finally called off at 4.45pm, for a point apiece.

Man City favourites to sign £100m sensation who’s "similar to Rice"

Manchester City failed to repeat their treble heroics of 2022/23 this campaign, winning just one trophy, which was the Premier League title. They finished two points clear of Arsenal in the end, who pushed them all the way but could not overcome the Citizens across the course of the 38-game season.

Although the Premier League season probably got a little too close for comfort for City, they were a dominant force again.

As well as getting the most points with 91, they also had the most expected points according to Understat, with 83xPTS, two more than Arsenal’s 81xPTS. Pep Guardiola’s side also scored the most goals, with 96, as they sealed their fourth title in a row, becoming the first Premier League side ever to achieve that feat.

In the Champions League, City lost on penalties to Real Madrid in the quarter-final, who now have a final to look forward to against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. The Citizens also lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final 2-1, with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo proving to be the difference.

Now, with City aiming to win all trophies again next season, they have already been linked with one Premier League star hoping to take them back to the top in all competitions.

Man City looking to sign Premier League Midfielder

The player in question here is Newcastle United and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who could depart St James’ Park this summer. Newcastle could have to sell the Brazilian this summer in order to comply with financial regulations, as this report from The Guardian explains.

This is where City could swoop in and take Guimarães off their hands. According to reports from Spain, the 26-year-old former Lyon man could be “the chosen one” when it comes to player sales at Newcastle.

kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion

The report goes on to explain that those clubs interested in signing Guimarães “will try to lower” the release clause in the Brazilian’s contract. As per the report, it is currently worth £100m and expires on the 24th of June.

Guardiola’s side are allegedly “on pole” in the race for the signature of the Brazil international. However, other clubs are also interested, with Arsenal “pushing hard” to sign Guimarães according to TEAMtalk. It could be a club-record transfer for the Gunners, should they bring Newcastle’s number 39 to the Emirates Stadium.

How Guimarães compares to Declan Rice

Since joining Newcastle from French side Lyon in the January transfer window of 2022 for £40m, Guimarães has been a revelation in the Premier League.

In 86 Premier League games so far, he has 16 goals and 14 assists, with the 2023/24 season his best return yet. During this campaign, Guimarães scored seven goals and registered eight assists.

The Brazilian is a wonderful all-phase number eight, and would slot perfectly into the midfield of Guardiola’s team. He is wonderful on the ball, and his progressive nature has been crucial for Newcastle during his time at St James’ Park. He was described as “quite similar to Rice in the way he plays” by Dean Jones in an interview with GiveMeSport.

According to Guimarães’ Fbref stats, he averages 7.80 progressive passes per 90 minutes this season, which ranks him in the top 13% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues this season. Not only that, he averages 1.87 passes into the penalty box per 90 minutes, placing him in the top 4% of midfielders. This could be pivotal at City when having to break down low blocks as they so often do, with opponents sitting deep and looking to hit them on the counter.

Guimarães is also an impressive ball carrier. The 26-year-old averages 3.36 take-ons per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 4% of midfielders. However, he is also very successful at this, completing 1.85 take-ons, which places him in the top 2%. Further averaging 2.01 carries into the penalty box, these attributes would certainly stand him in good stead at City, having the ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet.

The above numbers are incredibly similar to Rice who averages 7.77 progressive passes and 1.96 carries into the penalty area every 90 minutes.

Whilst the former Lyon star's out-of-possession numbers are not incredible, averaging just 3.34 combined tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, which places him in the 63rd percentile, he works very hard off the ball.

The Toon sensation averages 6.74 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which places him in the best 17%. He would have Rodri sitting behind him; that would be a wonderful partnership, given the Spaniard's defensive ability and Guimarães' progressive nature.

All things considered, City would be adding a very complete midfielder to their squad this summer, if they buy Guimarães. Whilst his pricetag is sizeable, it is money they have available to them, and it would be a real statement signing to Arsenal and the rest of the Premier League.

Rodrygo is one of the world's top 30 footballers – but Real Madrid star needs to become a consistent match-winner to gain Ballon d'Or recognition

The brilliant Brazilian has voiced his frustrations at not being nominated for the 2024 award, but he needs to elevate himself to be recognised

Rodrygo was angry – albeit in a way that famous people express their frustration these days, by posting a cryptic series of messages to his Instagram story. The Brazilian hadn't been named to the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 men's Ballon d'Or, and he subsequently told that he was "upset" by his omission.

His comments, in truth, have been somewhat been blown out of proportion. Rodrygo wasn't pedantic, he wasn't stroppy, and he didn't call out anyone else who made it over him, even if he might have been justifed in doing so. Rather, he merely acknowledged what is probably true: he is one of the 30 best footballers in the world.

But it is one thing to have the talent, or even statistics, to crack the list of nominees, and another to have the kind of gravitas to make it over others. The kids these days probably call it 'aura', but the Brazilian, for all of his brilliance, has never quite done enough to carry the kind of star power that is admittedly befitting of his immense quality as a footballer.

Rodrygo is, in many ways, a victim of his own versatility, a footballer so good at doing a bit of everything in the final third while featuring in the same side as so many other good players means that his outright talent often goes overlooked. So, too, does his lack of a signature moment, and until he does something that proves he is great, that Ballon d'Or acknowledgment he covets might remain elusive.

Part of the problem here comes from the misconception as to what, exactly, a player needs to do to win the most coveted individual prize in the sport. Rules changed after the 2021-22 season, but, broadly, players are nominated – and then voted on – via a series of factors. More than anything, judges are encouraged to consider individual performance over the course of a season. Next comes team success – the two being, in theory, intrinsically related.

In the past, a player's overall career was asked to be taken into consideration by those who cast their ballots. That would explain, for example, why Cristiano Ronaldo was among the 30 nominees in the 2021-22 season, despite scoring just 18 Premier League goals for a fairly miserable Manchester United side. That has since been scrapped, though. Now, it is, in theory, all about the previous season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe raw numbers

For Rodrygo, that makes things reasonably difficult. The eye test would certainly suggest that he is deserving of a spot among the 30, but most judges, quite reasonably, are unable to watch the top 30 week in, week out. Numbers are perhaps unfair, but they are the most accurate measuring stick of performance.

His attacking output was agreeable without being spellbinding. His return – 10 goals and five assists La Liga, five and two in the Champions League – doesn't necessarily jump off the page. He finished tied for 16th in goals scored in the Spanish top flight, and stuck on 30th in assists. Six Madrid players had more assists, while three found the net with more regularity. Joselu, 34, lumbering, and formerly of Stoke City, matched his goal total.

Sure, that is nothing to be scoffed at. But the data suggests that this is a player who is neither prolific nor particularly creative.

Getty Best position?

And then, there is Rodrygo the footballer. The main issue is that so many of Madrid's key actors over the last 12 months had clearly defined positions. Jude Bellingham was brilliant as an attacking midfielderwhie Vinicius Jr will likely win the Ballon d'Or for his performances as a left-winger-turned-inside forward.

Rodrygo, for his part, doesn't really have a clearly defined role – or even a best position. This issue has been floating around for a few years now, and if he is to be taken at his word, Rodrygo is best used an attacking midfielder of sorts.

"With the 4-2-3-1, behind [Karim Benzema] is the position that I like the most and everyone knows this. I always talk about it with the coach. Of course, I can play in all positions, but that's where it's where I feel more comfortable when it comes to playing," he told GOAL in 2023.

AFPNot the headline-maker

A glance over the existing Ballon d'Or nominees shows a list laden with Madrid's talent. The obvious ones are there: Vinicius, Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe. So too are the purists' picks: Toni Kroos, Antonio Rudiger, Fede Valverde. Dani Carvajal also makes the cut, likely on the back of his trophy cabinet from a year that also included him winning Euro 2024 with Spain.

Rodrygo can certainly have no complaints to see Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius on the list ahead of him. Given Kroos' overall impact on the season – and the sentimentality that has certainly crept into the decision-making since his retirement – it's hard to argue against him, either.

And therein lies the other issue. Rodrygo isn't the best player on this Madrid team. He isn't the second, third-best, either. He may be an excellent footballer, but he is probably the fifth-best on his own team, and doesn't have the national team success that comfortably propels him further up the list in the eyes of voters.

Wolves could tempt Cunha to stay by signing "special" PL star

The Premier League is embroiled in a financially-charged and potentially ruinous situation. With ongoing monetary battles and growing concerns leaving a range of clubs – including Wolverhampton Wanderers – finding themselves threatened by PSR, with tensions boiling over.

The Old Gold might have expressed contempt toward VAR but Gary O'Neil will be delighted that his side are in a good position heading into the summer market. Pedro Neto is attracting interest from Manchester City and Newcastle United and is valued at £60m but there is no pressing concern to cash in on loads of players after last year's exodus.

The Molineux outfit are not swimming in cash and will have to work astutely to enjoy a positive window, but there are some exciting deals potentially on the line, with Wolves among the clubs hoping to sign a coveted Premier League star.

Wolves could sign Premier League star

According to a report from Caught Offside earlier this week, Wolves are among the lost list of suitors hoping to sign Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners don't want to part with their Hale End product, and neither does Smith Rowe. But the dynamic midfielder has been limited to just three starts over the past two seasons and will be allowed to leave if his £30m valuation is met.

Paying such a sum will be difficult for the Old Gold, however, who are hoping Mikel Arteta will entertain a loan offer, bolstered by the knowledge that the Spaniard hopes to retain the 23-year-old's services.

How Emile Smith Rowe could benefit Wolves

It's not that long ago that pundit Jamie Carragher was proclaiming Smith Rowe to be the "best player in the Premier League running with the ball", also hailing his "special" style – such is the technical quality of the three-cap England international.

But injuries have not been kind to the £40k-per-week talent, who has failed to enjoy a significant impact at the fast-rising Emirates despite his patent skill.

Still, Smith Rowe scored ten goals and added two assists from only 21 Premier League starts throughout the 2021/22 campaign, also completing 87% of his passes and succeeding with 60% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

His silky, almost gossamer movements are simply evidence of first-class attributes that could see him rekindled at Wolves, serving as the beating heart of O'Neil's fast-paced, counter-pressing system. It's no wonder that, despite this thorny period of Smith Rowe's career, he has been dubbed a "joy to watch" by Arteta.

Moreover, he could even convince the £60m-rated Matheus Cunha to stay in the West Midlands, with the Brazilian striker currently being courted by Manchester United, though, according to the Evening Standard, he has told Wolves he is happy at the club.

Wolves striker Matheus Cunha

Still. Cunha has bloomed into one of the Premier League's most dangerous and all-including forwards, ranking among the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 14% for assists, the top 5% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 17% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

If, say, Neto is to leave in the weeks or months to come, it's imperative that Fosun work tirelessly to welcome an exciting replacement, one fuelled with the flair factor.

Smith Rowe could be that player, and he must be signed. Even if only as a loanee, it could prove to be a match made in heaven.

De Jong's situation at Barcelona has been one embroiled in much discussion and criticism since his move to Camp Nou from Ajax for a reported fee of €86 million (£71.7m/$96m) back in 2019. Last week, the Dutchman shot back at all the criticism targeted towards himself as he cleared up the wage figures thrown around by Spanish media. De Jong's future at Barcelona is still uncertain and with his contract set to run out in 2026, claims are still being made over his future.

£150k-a-week ace who Ten Hag loves tells friends he wants to quit Man Utd

A Manchester United star currently at Euro 2024 has now told his friends he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer, according to a new report.

Ten Hag stays at Man Utd

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have already made what will arguably be their biggest decision of the summer, choosing to stick with manager Erik ten Hag.

There was plenty of speculation regarding the Dutchman possibly leaving after two seasons in charge. Ten Hag, who is currently working as a pundit in the Netherlands for Euro 2024, admitted talks over a new deal at Old Trafford, while also revealing that the club told him they’d spoken with Thomas Tuchel.

"Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn't easily done, we are still going to have to talk about this. United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager.

"Ineos took their time. They are new in football, it's normal to reflect the season. It's no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.”

Attention will now be on the transfer market ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, where Ten Hag could lose a number of experienced players.

As we know, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial will leave when their contracts officially expire at the end of the month, whereas Casemiro has also been linked with an exit, already saying his Red Devils goodbyes. Now, another experienced star appears ready to depart.

Christian Eriksen ready to leave Man Utd

According to a new report from Football Insider, Man Utd midfielder Christian Eriksen has told friends he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer.

The Denmark international, who scored in his country’s opener at Euro 2024, is ready to exit over the coming months and has interest from Turkey and Saudi Arabia. It is added that Man Utd are unlikely to demand a huge fee for Eriksen, on £150,000-a-week, to leave.

The 32-year-old joined United in 2022 as a free agent and has gone on to make 72 appearances for the club, scoring three times, registering 13 assists and winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

After securing Eriksen’s services, Ten Hag hailed the player, saying: "He is an experienced player. He has played in countries abroad, in Italy, in Holland, a long time in England, so he knows the Premier League. It's an absolute advantage that we have him in.

"I think he is a magnificent football player and I think the fans will enjoy watching him, because he is creative, he has ideas. I think especially our strikers will also be happy because he is the one who can involve them in the game."

It looks as if his days in Manchester could now be numbered, though, making this a situation to watch over the coming months.
