Better than Havertz: 9/10 star was Arsenal’s “brightest spark of the night"

It wasn’t the most stylish of performances under Mikel Arteta, but Arsenal got the job done against Ipswich Town and cut the deficit from first-placed Liverpool to six points.

The Gunners have been hindered by injuries this season and lacked the brilliant potency of Bukayo Saka on Friday, who is expected to be out for more than two more months after tearing his hamstring against Crystal Palace.

Mikel Arteta and Jurrien Timber

But the well-eaned Premier League win over the Tractor Boys has lifted Arsenal into second, leapfrogging Chelsea after their loss against Fulham.

It was Kai Havertz who sealed the deal. He’s not perfect, but the German brings something unique to Arteta’s system.

Kai Havertz's performance vs Ipswich

Havertz hasn’t been the free-scoring striker that Arsenal have craved this season, but then he has still been comparatively clinical from different roles, playing deeper against Ipswich and still notching the winner, making it 12 goals from 25 matches in 2024/25.

The German saw plenty of action with 71 touches and made one key pass, as per Sofascore, but it wasn’t his finest display of the campaign.

Showcased was his elite-level movement, his tactical understanding and in-game intelligence, but Havertz still left something to be desired in his roving role, lacking the completeness that is well within his capability.

Havertz might have been the goal grabber, but he wasn’t Arteta’s most effective troop of the evening. Indeed, among his older and more experienced peers, Myles Lewis-Skelly was exceptional.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was Arteta's "brightest spark"

Ethan Nwaneri has stolen the limelight this season, but Myles-Skelly would argue that he is Hale End’s finest currently breaking through into Arsenal’s first team.

The 18-year-old left-back was immense once again in the Premier League, playing the full 90 and keeping a clean sheet against a resilient and spirited Ipswich side.

Journalist James Benge even called him “the brightest spark of the night” upon the final whistle. Lewis-Skelly made quite the impression once again, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Riccardo Calafiori and Jakub Kiwior all watching from the wings as he started his third Premier League fixture in succession.

As you can see, the teenage talent excelled for the hosts, with GOAL handing the youngster a remarkable 9/10 match rating following his effort, so composed and determined in his fight for stardom.

Lewis-Skelly’s confidence and composure is a beautiful thing, confirms that he has the natural-born style and gusto to succeed in the Premier League. And succeed he will.

Arsenal have a bit of a knack at churning out high-class prospects. With Arteta’s project making incremental progress, it feels like a matter of time until the varying points will converge and Arsenal will take that final, silver-edged step toward the pinnacle.

Ben Stokes' mind games hint at captaincy of extremes

Pushing bowlers to their limit while protecting Zak Crawley may prove a difficult balancing act

Giles: England favourites, but Leach will find it tough against India

In a small sample size, the third Test between England and New Zealand was perhaps the best example of the problem-solving, spirit and intent Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes want from their team. The reaction to being 55 for 6 in their first innings, the manner in which they picked off New Zealand to restrict them in the second innings, then chasing down 296 in 55 overs for the loss of just three wickets. For all the self-promotion from the players about how different things are going to be done in this era, their work across five days at Headingley said it best. Or so we thought. It turns out the most cavalier episode of an emphatic victory to seal an emphatic 3-0 series win was happening in the mind of Stokes.Speaking at Edgbaston on Thursday ahead of the series-completing fifth Test against India, Stokes revealed he deliberately under-bowled himself to challenge England’s attack of Stuart Broad, Matthew Potts, Jamie Overton and Jack Leach to test the limits of their excellence and get the job done themselves. It was most notable in the first innings, when Stokes did not even turn his arm over out of boredom as New Zealand scored 329 in 117.3 overs. He went on to send four overs down (0 for 30), in the second innings, finally bringing himself on 22 overs into the New Zealand second innings.Related

England vs India – the decider of a series from a different era

Thoughts on the periphery were of an injury preventing him from bowling, which made sense given Stokes was ill in the build-up. But it transpires neither team-mates nor McCullum and the other coaches knew of his tactic. Eventually, he had to let the latter know what he was up to during the match before telling all to the players once victory was achieved.”I really wanted to push the bowlers as far as I possibly could,” Stokes said. “To make them realise what they can do.”For the first three days, I did,” he said, when asked if he kept this plan to himself. “I wasn’t going to mention that until the end of the Test match because I didn’t want it to get around everybody. But when Baz and Jon Lewis were saying ‘are you going to bowl?’ then, okay, I said ‘this is why I’m doing it.'”No doubt their reactions at the time were of confusion, indeed this might have been an exchange that confirmed to McCullum that Stokes has him covered for aggression, as he relayed after the Test. Some of the bowlers were less than enthused: Broad, who bowled 47 overs in the match, wasn’t particularly happy.”It’s funny, bowlers have your green zones, amber zones and red zones based on how much work you’ve done at the end of a Test. Broady said he’s created a new zone called the burgundy zone. But that Test match was bigger than the result, as I keep saying. I honestly believe bowling out the best team in the world with three seamers and a spinner has done everybody the world of good.”Matt Potts, 23 years of age, in his third Test match must have taken a lot of confidence knowing that he can back up spell, after spell, after spell, after spell. Broady, 36, nearly bowling 50 overs in the game, always looks threatening. Leachy bowling 70 overs [70.5] in the game on a wicket that’s not really known for spinners doing well.”You’ve got Broady completely at the other end to someone like Matty Potts’ career. But doing what they did that whole week was really pushing them to their limits and making them understand what they are capable of doing.”Ben Stokes and James Anderson have a laugh as they watch a training session•Getty ImagesIt has to be one of the more extreme calls from Stokes, bordering on the reckless. Of all the unwritten rules of Test cricket, bowler workload management is undoubtedly the most sensible. You only need to look at England’s own injury list, featuring Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Olly Stone, Saqib Mahmood, Matt Fisher and Ollie Robinson to see the dangers of heaping too much on quick bowlers, particularly early on in their careers. Potts is clearly robust, but it will be interesting to see how he pulls up after four Tests in five weeks having come into the side off the back of 233.5 overs for Durham in the County Championship. For any accusations of a lack of duty of care aimed at Stokes, the treatment of Zak Crawley offers a counter. In a month when every player has earned some form of glory, the Kent opener has been walking around with a dark cloud above his head. An average of 14.50 from six innings has him visibly uncertain at the crease, and he has seemingly burned all the goodwill earned by an impressive 77 during the Sydney Test at the start of the year and then his second century (121) in March against West Indies. The conversation around Crawley has changed, from a batter just about to turn the corner and come into a sizeable run of form to one who is never going to be consistent but will eventually pay out big, like a slot machine. For a brief moment in his last innings, he looked to be hitting himself back into nick. Unfortunately on 25, he over-reached for a drive to a ball from offspinner Michael Bracewell that was not full enough, tamely guiding it into the hands of Kane Williamson at extra cover.Stokes’ unwavering support of Crawley is perhaps the only aspect of his tenure that has been poorly received among a section of supporters. From the start, the message has been this squad will be given a long time to perform in part because those selected, particularly in the batting, were regarded as the best in their positions. Crawley included.”You look back at the series against New Zealand and at the times that he has spent out the middle: he’s been very commanding and has such a huge presence at the crease,” Stokes said.”He hits the ball effortlessly hard. And he’s that close to a huge score. He got off to a flyer at Headingley: 20 to 25, it’s nothing to write home about and he’ll openly say that. But it’s the manner of how he’s played when he’s been at the crease which is a real exciting thing. And I’ve no doubt that he will continue to go out there and play like that, because he’s a real team player.”ESPNcricinfo LtdQuite how Crawley is coping with this period is anyone’s guess. It probably helps that he’s not on social media and thus can focus on the positivity from those that matter most. At the same time, there will be desperation to not look like a spare part in a team capturing the nation’s imagination. From the outside looking in, he seems the only one not having a good time.As it happens, this one-off Test with India will be his 25th cap for England, involving a presentation ceremony to mark the milestone. He will go in with an average of just 26.68, and seven scores of 50 or more, though one was 267 against Pakistan in 2020 which will no doubt occupy a lot of the focus in Friday’s morning speech. It will be a proud moment for Crawley and a polarising one further afield.Stokes, however, is only concerned with the former and appreciates that the last few weeks of dealing with Crawley as a person will give him the best chance of coming good again as a cricketer.”He’s still Zak,” Stokes said when asked of Crawley’s mood. “He is a very funny man. But you never really know how someone is really internally. So when things aren’t going so well for someone you’ve obviously got to do the right thing, if it is pumping his tyres up or whatever it is, but you can only say so many times that you’ve got the backing of us because it almost sounds like a broken record when you keep saying it.”But I’m going to say it again: he’s got the backing of myself, Brendon and everybody in the changing room. I’m giving everyone in this team the time to go out and perform and show the world what they’re all about as players.”It is a period of extremes for Stokes at present. The bigger picture is he is doing a lot right. England are winning again, players and fans are enjoying being a part of Test cricket in this country after nearly two years of apathy. India will test that resolve, as will South Africa later this summer. They will also test the robustness of Stokes’ balance. Pushing bowlers, and coddling Crawley, both are immediate-term plays from his captaincy sketchbook. Even with such a belligerent attitude to tactics and selection, maintaining that equilibrium is only going to get tougher.

Sky Sports: Birmingham City set to seal "massive" free signing for Davies

Birmingham City are set to sign a new player for Chris Davies in 2025, with an agreement already reached, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

Birmingham flying under Davies

The Blues are looking good for League One promotion at the first attempt under Davies, currently sitting two points clear at the top of the table with two games in hand.

Davies’ side have navigated their way through a busy festive period, with their last third-tier defeat coming back in November. The games continue to come thick and fast for Birmingham, including an eye-catching trip to Wrexham later this month.

However, with the transfer window open, there have been rumours of a new defender arriving at St Andrews, including Swansea City’s Harry Darling. It looks as if a move for a long-term target has now been reached, though, in what will be a boost for the Blues and Davies.

Birmingham set to sign defender

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Birmingham have “sealed” the services of Hannover 96 defender Phil Neumann. The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer where he will join the Blues on a free transfer.

Neumann, a former Germany U20 international, is primarily a centre-back but can also play at right-back if required.

He came through the youth academy at FC Schalke before turning out for FC Ingolstadt and Holstein Kiel, signing for Hannover 96 in 2022.

Neumann’s next club is set to be Birmingham, though, and talking to Football League World, Blues fan pundit Mike Gibbs thinks he could be a “massive addition”.

“I think the Neumann deal is outstanding. Based on the reading I’m doing, and looking at some of the data, looking at some of the reports that are coming out, he’s probably the most respected defender (in Germany) outside of the Bundesliga I think.

“He’s obviously done very, very well. We were in for him in the summer, I think there was talk of about £4m. I think he’d be an outstanding signing, and all of the signals lead to him being a massive addition.

“I think, obviously, there’s a lot of chat about, yes, it’s a pre-contract agreement, but can we then do a deal with Hannover where he joins in January? A lot of the chat on some of the groups that I’ve been in is if you can get him in January, but almost give him six months to acclimatise.

“It doesn’t majorly disrupt what’s going on now, but what it does mean is that, come the summer, he’s raring to go for next season, which is hopefully in the Championship. I think, next year, if he has a full summer, or we do bring him in in January, I do think he’s a natural starter, personally.”

"Excellent" Newcastle youngster to be allowed to leave Tyneside in January

An “excellent” Newcastle United defender will be allowed to leave the club in January after expressing his deisre to play first team football, according to a new report.

Osula shines as Newcastle breeze past Bromley

Eddie Howe gave a number of his young stars a run out against League Two side Bromley in the FA Cup third round at the weekend, and they did not disappoint. Midfielder Lewis Miley, 18, and striker William Osula, 21, were both on the scoresheet with superb goals in a 3-1 win for the Magpies at St. James’ Park.

Trevan Sanusi, 17, also came off the bench to make his professional debut, and impressed, with Chronicle Live awarding him 7 out of 10 for his display, saying he “caused one or two problems”.

Speaking after the game, Howe praised both Miley and Osula for their goals: “What a brilliant finish from Lewis Miley. From that moment we settled into the game. Lewis played very well. He brings loads of composure and quality on the ball.”

On Osula’s goal, which saw him skillfully cut in from the right wing before bending the ball into the far corner, the English manager said: “He’s been waiting for that moment. He’s been training hard. He has huge potential and quality. I haven’t seen him score many like that. I’m delighted for him.”

Murphy set to leave Newcastle

One young player who wasn’t involved on Sunday and could soon be on his way out of St. James’ Park is Irish defender Alex Murphy. The 20-year-old, who was an unused substitute against Bromley, joined Newcastle from Galway United in the summer of 2022, but has since made just two first team appearances, spending the majority of his time with the club’s reserves.

Murphy recently went public with his request to play senior football, saying via The Shields Gazette: “I want to play as many senior minutes as I can, whether that is here or somewhere else for the year. I want to get as many games under my belt as possible and then, hopefully, the aim is to play here every week.”

And the Gazette report that Newcastle have now made Murphy available for a loan this month, and has had interest from a number of Football League and Scottish Premiership clubs, who are keen to take him on for the remainder of the campaign.

Given that Murphy signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle in May of last year, it’s appears he still has a bright future ahead of him on Tyneside – Howe has also been full of praise for the Irishman in the past.

Speaking about Murphy after he put in an impressive performance in a pre-season game against Chelsea in 2023, the boss had glowing praise: “I thought he was excellent, really, really good.

“He was very composed, and defended really well. I was really, really pleased with him. I’ve always liked Alex. I think he’s a very good technician. But it’s really when you find out about players when you’re in this environment- a full crowd, Premier League opposition. He can be very pleased with his night’s work.”

After signing from Real Betis last summer, Diao has impressed in his first season in Italy, registering seven goal contributions from 13 appearances. The 19-year-old's form led to him receiving his first senior international call-up for Senegal in March, after he decided to switch his allegiance from his native country Spain.

WHAT FABREGAS SAID

Fabregas said: "There is no mentality of speculating and selling, they come here to grow and improve the team. Then obviously, Manchester [United] can come and ask for Diao by offering €40m, but it is not a given that he will leave. Shan Masood signs for Yorkshire on two-year deal

Ben Mike also joins club in move from Leicestershire

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Aug-2022Shan Masood, the Pakistan opening batter, has been confirmed as Yorkshire’s new overseas signing, after signing a two-year deal ahead of the 2023 season.Masood, 32, has been a revelation for Derbyshire this summer, scoring 1,779 runs in all competitions so far, but as revealed by ESPNcricinfo, the temptation and prestige of joining Yorkshire was a big incentive for the player.”I’m delighted to have signed for Yorkshire,” Masood said. “The pedigree and the history of Yorkshire CCC is massive and to play at Headingley week in week out is a dream. To follow in the footsteps of the three Pakistan captains (Inzamam ul Haq, Younis Khan and Sarfaraz Ahmed) that have represented Yorkshire is really exciting.”I’m looking forward to sharing a dressing room with some really talented players, including the current England players like Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Dawid Malan and Harry Brook.”I’m also looking forward to working with Ottis Gibson again, having worked closely with him in the PSL (Pakistan Super League) this year.Masood played the most recent of his 25 Tests in January 2021, but remains committed to earning a Pakistan recall, and believes the allure of Division One cricket at Yorkshire will help him to fulfil that ambition.”I maintain a strong desire to play cricket at the highest level and I feel this project at Yorkshire provides me with the ideal opportunity to take that step. I share the ambition of the Club to win trophies whilst playing an exciting brand of cricket.”Yorkshire have also announced the signing of Ben Mike, the Leicestershire allrounder, on a three-year deal. Mike, 23, has taken 79 first-class and 40 white-ball wickets in his career to date, as well as 1,944 runs, and last season sealed a thrilling victory against Yorkshire in the T20 Blast with a last-ball six.”I am excited to have signed for such a prestigious club as Yorkshire CCC. I will wear the white rose with pride,” Mike said. “I have enjoyed my time at Leicestershire and want to thank everyone there. However, the opportunity to play for Yorkshire CCC and learn from some of the greats at the club is an amazing opportunity.”Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s Interim managing director of cricket, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Shan and Ben have opted to join us here at Yorkshire.”Shan is a world-class batter who will contribute in all formats for us. He’s a great senior player and we’ve seen from his performances with Derbyshire this year that he has what it takes to score a lot of runs in county cricket.”His experiences from playing around the world, including international cricket with Pakistan, will be incredibly valuable to the squad we are building.”Ben is a very talented young cricketer whose signature was in demand around the counties so it’s brilliant that he will be in our ranks next year.

Imagine him & Bowen: West Ham ready to sign "electric" Duran alternative

It is no secret that West Ham United are in the market to add another centre-forward to Graham Potter’s squad before the end of the January transfer window.

Sky Sports recently reported that the Hammers have had a bid of £57m rejected by Aston Villa for Colombia international Jhon Duran, with the Villans intent on keeping the number nine.

Villa reportedly value the 21-year-old forward at £70m after his return of seven goals in four Premier League starts this season for Unai Emery, which means that West Ham’s bid was some way short of their valuation.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

The London outfit have now, reportedly, turned their attention away from Duran to an alternative centre-forward target to come in and bolster the squad.

West Ham willing to swoop for Serie A forward

According to Calcio Mercato, as relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham are ‘queuing’ up to sign AC Milan number nine Noah Okafor before the end of the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claims that the Hammers are looking to take advantage of RB Leipzig deciding to pull out of a deal for the Swiss forward due to a calf injury issue by moving for the Serie A marksman.

It states that Leipzig were set to sign the former RB Salzburg man on loan with an option to make it a permanent deal in the summer for a fee of around £21m and West Ham are now ‘willing’ to sign Okafor for the same terms.

The Hammers are ready to sign the 24-year-old star from Milan but Premier League rivals Bournemouth are also interested in snapping him up, which means that it could be a fight between the two teams to land the striker on loan before the window slams shut.

Why West Ham should sign Noah Okafor

Potter should gamble on a swoop for Switzerland international because the potential is there for him to come in as an exciting partner for Jarrod Bowen in the final third.

Like the England international, Okafor can play out wide on either flank or through the middle as a centre-forward and this means that they could form a fluid partnership for the Hammers, interchanging positions in matches to cause constant problems for defenders.

The Milan striker, who analyst Ben Mattinson once praised for having “electric” pace, has only scored one goal in five starts in the Serie A this term, but did show promise last season.

Appearances (starts)

As you can see in the table above, Okafor was ruthless in front of goal with the chances that came his way, scoring 27% of his shots on goal and overperforming against his xG.

That also came after the Swiss dynamo produced 16 goals in 22 starts for Salzburg in his final two seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns combined, and these statistics all suggest that he has the potential to be a lethal finisher for the Hammers if he can get back to his best.

Bowen has created 18 ‘big chances’ and has been rewarded with ten assists in the Premier League since the start of last term, which suggests that his teammates have not made the most of his creativity in the final third.

Therefore, Okafor has the potential to be a dream signing for the England international, as he has the finishing quality to thrive on the service that the winger can provide.
