Hasan Ali will play county cricket for the first time in his career after signing a contract with Lancashire for six County Championship fixtures.Hasan, 27, was the third-highest Test wicket-taker in 2021 with 41 wickets at 16.07 and is the ninth Pakistan player to sign a county contract for this season after Shan Masood (Derbyshire), Zafar Gohar, Naseem Shah (both Gloucestershire), Mohammad Abbas (Hampshire), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Middlesex), Mohammad Rizwan (Sussex), Azhar Ali (Worcestershire) and Haris Rauf (Yorkshire).”I am very excited at the prospect of playing county cricket in England for the first time in my career,” Hasan said. “Emirates Old Trafford is a stadium which holds special memories for me, after making my T20 International debut against England there in 2016.”I am very proud to follow in the footsteps of Wasim Akram, a Pakistan legend, who always talks so highly of his time with Lancashire. Hasan will arrive in Manchester at the start of April following Pakistan’s series against Australia and will be available for Lancashire’s season opener against Kent at Canterbury on April 14. His final appearance will come against Essex on May 19.Lancashire were pipped to the Championship title by Warwickshire on the final day of the 2021 season and will be expected to compete again this year.The signing of Hasan – who will be their second overseas player in the Championship alongside captain Dane Vilas – further strengthens a seam attack which features Saqib Mahmood, Tom Bailey, Luke Wood and Danny Lamb. James Anderson, who was recently left out of England’s tour of the Caribbean, is also set to be available in the early stages of the season.Glen Chapple, Lancashire’s head coach, said: “Hasan is a high-quality player and has a fine record in first-class and Test match cricket. We believe that his red-ball skills will complement our bowling attack nicely and that the experience he has gained at international level can bring a lot into our dressing room.”

Now, be it six months on from his arrival or, indeed, a full year, Smets could find himself heading for the exit door amid such interest. Compared to PSG defender Marquinhos by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, the Beglian is certainly one to watch.

When 2025 arrives, it may well be a case of out with the old and in with the new for Aston Villa, with an ageing Diego Carlos potentially making way for Smets. Now 31 years old alongside Tyrone Mings, Carlos is among the replaceable players in the Midlands and ones that they should consider showing the door in an attempt to prevent the consequences of an ageing squad.
Smets wouldn’t exactly be a bad option to turn to, either. The 20-year-old is already at the centre of a title race despite his young age and has seemingly emerged on the shortlist of other top Premier League sides – earning Kulig’s Marquinhos comparison and “elegant” tag as a result.
It would send yet another statement of intent if Aston Villa managed to win the race for Smets’ signature ahead of their top four rivals, especially following a recent dip in form.

There wasn’t much to speak of following the first Test in Rawalpindi, apart from the playing surface around which a dull draw began to take shape as early as the second day. Just 14 wickets fell across five days with the pitch never quite breaking up as Pakistan might have hoped. The match referee Ranjan Madugalle rated the pitch “below average” and one demerit point was handed out to the venue. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja, somewhat unusually, released a video statement, all but admitting the pitch had been neutralised because of the unavailability of Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali.So it was perhaps natural that Babar Azam would be peppered with questions about the surface, and whether Pakistan were a touch too wary of Australia. “We’re not frightened of Australia,” he insisted. “The conditions are the same for both teams, and the World Test Championship points are very crucial. As a captain, I wanted us to win. The way our side dominated, we had batters score 150-plus and [bowlers] get wickets. So there’s nothing to panic about. We dominated. We didn’t get a result, unfortunately, but that’s not in our hands. If all the overs that were lost due to rain were played, maybe we’d have a different result.”But while mystery shrouded the nature of the strip in use in Rawalpindi, there appears to be much more congruity about the characteristics of the wicket in Karachi. Australian captain Pat Cummins said the wicket looked drier, and Karachi’s historical friendliness towards spinners has seen the visitors drop Josh Hazlewood and hand legspinner Mitchell Swepson his debut. Babar admitted Pakistan didn’t know much about the Queenslander yet.”I haven’t seen much of him,” he said. “We’ll watch videos of him and plan accordingly. We’ve started practice here; it’s quite hot and the conditions are different. We have momentum with us; we dominated the first Test and had great individual and team performances. The batters batted well, the bowlers took ten wickets, and Nauman six. The overall team performance was good and we’re trying to take that momentum into this game.”Just like Imam-ul-Haq on Thursday, Babar too defended the Rawalpindi pitch. “The conditions here are not as they are in Australia,” he said. “Every venue has different conditions that we utilise. You can’t just produce bouncy wickets or ‘Australia-style’ wickets; that’s not possible. We’ll go by our strength and try and win the match that way. Test match situations and pitches are different to ODIs; matches have to last five days. Later on, the spinners will get help.”The pitch looks like a sporting wicket. There’s lots of talk about how the pitch should have been. Whatever the kind of wicket, you must put in the effort to score runs and take wickets. In Australia, we have the world’s best team here, and performing against them is very difficult; they give you a tough time. The way the team performed and worked hard has been heartening. You need patience, and I think our side showed a lot of patience.”For Australia, four batters got to half-centuries in the first Test, but all of them fell short of the three-figure mark; Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne were dismissed three and ten runs shy. Cummins said Australia had spoken about the need to capitalise once the batters were set, but defended his bowlers’ performance, despite the visitors managing only four wickets in 239 overs.”We spoke about that [batters’ performances] after the game. There are some really good positives from the batting group to get high 400s but over here, if you get yourself in, you’ve to capitalise. Even last week if we are being really critical, we might have missed a chance where we could have got a good lead ahead and had a chance to bowl on day five with a bit of a lead. They’ve been working hard the last couple of days of training. We think this wicket will provide a couple more questions and they are up for it.”We didn’t get as many wickets as we would have liked but never let the run rate slip, on past tours of the subcontinent we have. We never lost control of the game. As a Test match, it was an absolute outlier, so [we will] put it behind us and come here where we’ll probably get closer to the conditions we would expect in a subcontinent Test. I expect this wicket to break up a little bit more.”

A career-best unbeaten double century from Derbyshire’s Shan Masood dominated the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two match against Sussex at Derby.The Pakistani opener scored a brilliant 201 from 271 balls and shared a third-wicket stand of 236 with Wayne Madsen, who was 88 not out at the close.An injury-weakened Sussex attack failed to take a wicket after lunch as Derbyshire closed on an imposing 327 for 2.Masood had already impressed with two half centuries in the opening match at Lord’s last week when he narrowly missed out on a hundred in the first innings.He made no mistake this time against a largely inexperienced attack after Derbyshire won the toss and batted first on what looks to be a benign pitch.Related

With the exception of Steve Finn, the bowling lacked the consistency to apply any sustained pressure and Mahmood took advantage to reach 50 from only 60 balls.Sussex stuck to their task but the only wickets to fall in the first two sessions were down to batting errors with Billy Godleman tickling a leg-glance to Mohammad Rizwan and Brooke Guest bottom-edging a pull.But the wicket Sussex dearly wanted was Masood and, a couple of false strokes against the left-arm spin of James Coles apart, he gave them little encouragement.At lunch he was 74 from 88 balls and after the interval he moved to his century with a succession of imperious, at times dismissive, strokes on both sides of the wicket.Sussex probably realised it was not going to be their day when Tom Haines struck Masood on the back pad but his impassioned appeal left umpire Paul Baldwin unmoved.There were few other alarms as Masood and Madsen cruised to a 100 stand in 28 overs and by tea Derbyshire had scored at a quicker rate than any other team in the country.Madsen has now shared century stands with 29 different batsmen, breaking the Derbyshire record of 28 held by Kim Barnett, and he reached another milestone when he completed his 100th first-class score of 50 or more.Although he was content to play the supporting role, he was also largely untroubled apart from when a throw struck him a painful blow on the back of the right knee.Sussex switched Finn to the Racecourse End at the start of the final session but the runs kept flowing with Masood reaching 150 from 191 balls.The elegant left-hander will face more challenging attacks in the weeks to come but even at this early stage, head of cricket Mickey Arthur looks to have completed a very shrewd piece of business in bringing him to the club.The visitors at least applied the brake towards the close of a long, hard day in the field but could not prevent Masood and Madsen passing Derbyshire’s previous highest third-wicket stand against Sussex of 215 set by Les Townsend and Albert Alderman at Eastbourne in 1938.

To prove that even the best need time to adjust to life in the Premier League, Guardiola struggled in his debut campaign at the Etihad compared to his incredibly high standards at least. Taking the then-champions to a third-place finish and 15 points adrift of eventual winners Chelsea, Guardiola saw his side humiliated against Everton at Goodison Park and felt his first taste of defeat in the Manchester derby, losing 1-0 in the League Cup.
In the Jose Mourinho vs Guardiola rivalry, it was the former who welcomed the Spaniard to his stomping ground of English football – a place he had long before made his mark. Squaring off in the round of 16 of the League Cup, it was Juan Mata’s goal in the 54th minute which proved to be the winner for the Red Devils to shock Manchester City.

One of Guardiola’s most frustrating seasons undoubtedly came in 2019/20, and Manchester United only compiled that misery. With Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the middle of one of the most dominant starts in Premier League history, dropping just two points in the first half of the campaign, City were struggling with the injury to Ruben Dias and paid the ultimate price as a result.
Manchester United weren’t exactly in an excellent position themselves, however, having eventually finished 33 points adrift of champions Liverpool to set up quite the battle up against the Citizens at the beginning of a torrid festive period.
The Red Devils raced into control from the off and didn’t look back, with Marcus Rashford’s penalty in the 23rd minute quickly followed by Anthony Martial’s effort just six minutes later to hand his side a 2-0 lead. Nicolas Otamendi’s goal to halve the deficit with seven minutes remaining threatened a comeback only to be nothing more than a consolation for a defeated Manchester City side.

It was almost like the United of old when they turned the game on its head to defeat Manchester City 2-1 in the 2022/23 campaign. In a season that eventually saw the Citizens lift yet another Premier League title under Guardiola, they once again failed to come unscathed against their local rivals. At the time, it looked to be a major moment in the title race too, as United moved within a point of City and then-leaders Arsenal remained five points clear.
The eventual champions thought they were on course for all three points when Jack Grealish converted Kevin de Bruyne’s cross on the hour mark, before four minutes to forget turned the game on its head. First came the controversial strike of Bruno Fernandes as City were left waiting for an offside flag which never came. Then, to send the Old Trafford faithful into raptures, Rashford slammed home Alejandro Garnacho’s cross to score the winning goal in the 82nd minute.

As United shocked Guardiola once again, it was probably a good thing that fans were still not allowed in attendance across the Premier League amid the Covid-19 pandemic. With or without fans, however, the Etihad would have been silenced when Fernandes opened the scoring from the spot within just two minutes to instantly hand City a mountain to climb.
The second half didn’t start much better for the Citizens either. Having come out from the break ready to turn things around and extend their 15-game winning run, City were once again left shell-shocked. This time, it was unlikely goalscorer Luke Shaw at the centre of the scenes, wheeling away in celebration just five minutes into the second period to send United on their way to victory.

As if Manchester City’s December defeat wasn’t bad enough, they were on the wrong end of the Manchester derby for a second time in the 2019/20 campaign when they visited Old Trafford. The Red Devils took full advantage of a season to forget for the Citizens, completing their first league double over their rivals since the 2009/10 campaign.
For all of Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s downfalls, not many can argue that he had Guardiola’s number both in the 2019/20 campaign and in other moments to remember. Once again, Martial found himself on the scoresheet against the Citizens, scoring the opening goal on the half-hour mark courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ assist.
The scenes that Old Trafford will remember most, however, is the aftermath of Scott McTominay’s goal to seal the three points and send United fans into delirium. The Scot was perfectly placed to receive Ederson’s poor clearance and sensationally lob the helpless Brazilian from range to secure victory and a league double over Guardiola in style.

Even after taking a 2-0 lead and cruising courtesy of goals within five minutes from Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan, Guardiola was left scratching his head on the losing side come full-time.
Simply put though, it was the Paul Pogba show at the Etihad. In what has been a trend over the years, Manchester City squared off against rivals Manchester United as Premier League champions last season and in the FA Cup final, of all games. Em suas redes sociais, Dyogo não escondeu a emoção e, sucinto, resumiu a experiência: “Realizado”. Ele é um dos sobreviventes do incêndio ocorrido no Ninho do Urubu, em fevereiro de 2019, que levou dez atletas do Fla a óbito.

Escolhido por Taffarel, preparador de goleiros da Seleção, Francisco Dyogo participou da atividade no CT da CBF pois Ederson, do Manchester City, foi cortado de última e Everson, do Atlético-MG, convocado posteriormente, só se apresenta nesta quarta para integrar o plantel de Tite.
Vale lembrar que Francisco Dyogo precisou ser internado na época da tragédia, mas retornou aos gramados rapidamente; e com destaque. Em 2019, chegou a ser convocado para a Seleção Brasileira sub-15. O jovem assinou o primeiro contrato profissional com o Flamengo em março de 2020 – válido até fevereiro de 2023. O promissor camisa 1 também integra a Seleção sub-17.
