Roberts urges Levy to appoint Rodgers

Graham Roberts insists that Tottenham Hotspur have to appoint Brendan Rodgers as their next manager, in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

Spurs beat Leicester City 4-2 on the final day of the season on Sunday to confirm a seventh-place finish and deny the Foxes qualification for the Champions League.

Rodgers has reportedly already rejected a move to Spurs already, as he looks to remain with the Foxes, with whom he has won the FA Cup this season.

Still, Roberts is convinced that Tottenham need a new project as they look to rebuild after a dispiriting campaign played primarily under the management of Jose Mourinho.

Roberts believes that Spurs need to appoint “another Pochettino” and he has made the claim that Rodgers is absolutely the best option still out there and has urged Daniel Levy to pull out all the stops to get him to north London.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think we do need to rebuild. We need another five year plan, we need another Pochettino and I think Brendan Rodgers would be the ideal person to come in, use some of the youngsters and say ‘we might not finish in the top six next year but we’re building for the next 10 years’.

“I think Brendan Rodgers is the right choice, for me. You have to do everything in your power, if you want somebody, you can get them but you have to go with all guns firing.”

Leicester lost their final two games of the campaign and subsequently missed out on a top four finish for the second successive season.

Wolves transfer update on Moutinho

Some Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Joao Moutinho.

As per Sic Noticias, FC Porto are currently in talks to sign the central midfield player in the summer window, who has a market value of €4m (£3.4m).

Moutinho was not exactly at his best in the 2020/21 season, scoring just once and making one assist in 36 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Some members of the Molineux faithful grew increasingly frustrated with some of his performances towards the back end of the campaign, most notably against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

Those dismal displays are perhaps a sign that Moutinho needs to be moved on, and at 34 years of age, any sort of transfer fee would benefit the Midlands club, who could then use that money to invest elsewhere in the market.

Sheffield United holding firm on Berge

Sheffield United will not be forced into selling Sander Berge for a reduced price this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Sheffield Star, who claimed that the Blades will demand a fee of around £35m in order to part with the defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window, despite suffering relegation to the Championship this season.

The report added that Arsenal are thought to be monitoring the Norway international’s situation ahead of a potential move in the coming months, but, Sheffield United’s firm stance over the 23-year-old’s valuation could deter Mikel Arteta’s side from making a move.

Fans will be buzzing

While Berge – whom Chris Wilder dubbed an “outstanding” player – was by no means in the best form of his life this season, something which was most probably a result of spending a long spell on the sidelines due to injury, that the Blades appear to be standing strong over the midfielder’s potential sale this summer is likely to have fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, after joining Sheffield United from Genk in a £19.8m deal back in January of 2020, Berge impressed over his 14 Premier League appearances in the club’s 2019/20 campaign, scoring one goal, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to averaging 0.7 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and winning 5.5 duels per game – with these metrics culminating in a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.90.

As such, if Berge can rediscover such form for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side in their Championship campaign next season, it should considerably boost the Blades’ chances of making an immediate return to the Premier League under their new manager.

With the £16.2m-rated man’s asking price appearing likely to deter a number of clubs from making a move for the £38,000-per-week 23-year-old this summer, which subsequently increases the chances of him remaining at Bramall Lane ahead of next season, this would appear to be very good news indeed for both Jokanovic and fans of the club.

MCFC fans want Raphinha

Manchester City fans want to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha after they were linked with a move for the Brazilian.

With the 2020/21 campaign now over, City will now be looking ahead to the next term as they look to build upon the success of this season. They won both the Premier League and the League Cup, but their defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final means there is still room for improvement.

As such, this summer could be a busy one at the Etihad Stadium in terms of transfers and, according to Gianluigi Longari, City are interested in signing £22.5m-valued Raphinha (Transfermarkt).

Signed by Leeds from Rennes last year, he scored six goals and provided nine assists in 30 games in his debut Premier League term (Transfermarkt).

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Moyes set for huge West Ham boost

David Moyes has just received one massive West Ham boost ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

After penning a new three-year deal over the weekend, the 58-year-old has been given the green light to appoint his own recruitment staff in what appears to be a surprise new approach from the Irons’ hierarchy.

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that Moyes made it clear during talks with chiefs David Sullivan, David Gold and Karen Brady that bolstering the club’s scouting network was key to him signing new terms.

This move will see the Scot appoint his own director of football, a position that has not been filled since the disastrous Mario Husillos who left with Manuel Pellegrini in December 2019, as well as hiring more talent-spotters.

Huge boost

Aside from signing a new striker or bringing Jesse Lingard back on a permanent basis, this could be the news of the summer at the London Stadium as it shows just how committed they are to Moyes and his project.

It’s the least they could do considering they gave up on him during his first stint in charge, and since his return, he has steered West Ham into the Europa League having survived with one game to go last term.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

His recruitment has been second to none and has played a large part in their success.

No one would’ve heard of either Tomas Soucek or Vladimir Coufal prior to their arrival in East London but they have emerged as two of the standout contenders for this season’s ‘Player of the Year’ award, whilst his revival of Lingard deserves plenty of plaudits.

Evidently, he’s got it spot on all by himself so far, so now that he’s trusted to appoint an extended scouting network, the chances of finding more bargains will be increased further after this exciting Rush Green development.

It’s now going to be on GSB to back him financially in the market. The current squad needs vast additions across the pitch to stand a chance at remaining competitive in what is likely to be a 50-plus game campaign.

But for the time being, this is a hugely encouraging boost following Moyes’ contract extension.

AVFC: Danny Mills drops Harry Winks claim

Football Insider pundit Dany Mills believes Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks could join Aston Villa this summer.

The Lowdown: Winks set for Spurs exit?

Winks has been with Spurs since 2016 and is under contract until 2024, however, it appears he could be on the move from north London in the current window.

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a source, incoming Tottenham recruitment chief Fabio Paratici will tell the central midfielder that the club will listen to offers for his services this summer.

The 25-year-old has made 173 appearances for Spurs, but it appears as if he may not add to that tally.

The Latest: Mills’ claim

Mills, 44, was talking to Football Insider and admitted he saw the England international playing golf at The Belfry, hinting at a possible house hunting trip to the Midlands.

“I don’t see him getting into that Spurs side.

“It depends who comes and goes this summer but he’s down the pecking order. He has been for some time now.

“He needs to get playing. I see him going to Wolves and Aston Villa. He was seen playing golf at The Belfry.

“Let’s assume he was house hunting. I can confirm he was there.”

The Verdict: Do Villa need him?

Should Villa be in for Winks this summer, it could prove to be a smart signing by Dean Smith.

Winks is capable of playing as a defensive or central midfielder and could end up bolstering Villa’s options in the middle of the park, should he seal a move.

Conor Hourihane is unsure where his future lies, whereas Manchester City are considering exercising their buy-back clause for Douglas Luiz. Should those two depart, a move for Winks may be good business.

Crystal Palace takeover talks

Crystal Palace are the subject of a £220 million takeover bid led by American businessman John Textor, who is a pioneer in hologram technology.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, the investor is leading a consortium that is attempting to take control of the south London outfit.

Palace’s current American co-owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer purchased stakes in the Eagles back in 2015, but both are believed to want to sell their shares in the club.

Fans should be worried

Textor built his reputation as the co-chairman of visual effects company Digital Domain, famously working on several award-winning films, including Titanic, which won an Oscar in 1997.

However, his reputation in Hollywood suffered a huge blow after an attempt to change the company’s business model failed in a spectacular fashion.

After debts reached a reported £160m, they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012, putting Textor’s business acumen into question.

Digital Domain did eventually recover, though, as did Textor. He’s now the leading shareholder of a streaming company focussed on sport called FuboTV.

Fubo merged with Textor’s company Facebank, best known for creating holograms of rapper Tupac Shakur for the Coachella Music Festival in 2012 and of Michael Jackson for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Despite his ultimate success in business, Textor isn’t a billionaire and will have to acquire financial support from elsewhere to put together a feasible offer for Palace.

With Harris, Blitzer and chairman Steve Parish all thought to own an equal stake of 18%, the proposed new owner will have to invest a substantial sum to gain majority control.

While getting new, ambitious owners is often an exciting time for football fans, Palace supporters should be relatively worried about this latest revelation.

Talks are thought to be at an advanced stage, yet Textor’s concerning previous business exploits and relative lack of financial might are far from ideal.

Parish has proved to be a popular figure at Selhurst Park in recent years, and with the capital club attempting to rebuild themselves following Roy Hodgson’s departure, this distraction may have come at a bad time.

And, in other news…Parish must swoop for “unstoppable” £13.5m-rated goal machine, Palace badly need him

Villa must sign Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse

Aston Villa could complete their midfield jigsaw with the signing of Southampton star James Ward-Prowse.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Dean Smith is lining up a summer swoop for the England midfielder, and Noel Whelan has thrown his backing behind a potential move for the Saints man.

He said: “I’m not surprised he wants to move. Villa are showing real intent early on. I think the move will materialise, it’s happening. They have already got Buendia through the door so it really is exciting times for Aston Villa fans.

“If they can get James Ward-Prowse as well, another international, they could really reach that next level. He was very unlucky not to be in the England squad for the Euros. He would add serious competition for places.

“It would be a very exciting midfield if he was in there with Grealish, Buendia and McGinn. Time will tell if these signings are seen as replacements for Jack Grealish or not.”

Could complete Villa

The £35k-a-week earning ace would offer something that Villa really missed last season – goals from midfield. The Saints star managed eight goals in the Premier League, as well as chipping in with seven assists too, numbers that are far better than anything that Smith’s current options produced (John McGinn was the closest with three).

With Grealish and Buendia further ahead, Ward-Prowse would be tasked with breaking the lines with his passing deeper from midfield, and giving those two enough touches of the ball to cause havoc.

As Whelan says, it would make for a “very exciting midfield” if the trio started for Villa next season in the Premier League, with Grealish and Buendia offering real creativity, and Ward-Prowse coming in from deep and providing a supply line of both goals and assists too.

It’s a move that could see Johan Lange complete the midfield jigsaw for Villa.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update…

Ronaldo, Locatelli & Lukaku nominated for GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Euro 2020 Group Stage award

The Euro 2020 group stage reached its conclusion on Wednesday as Germany eventually secured their place in the last-16 on a turbulent evening in Group F.

Joachim Lowe’s side scraped a late equaliser courtesy of Leon Goretzka to ensure that all of Europe’s traditional behemoth nations will be playing in the knockout stages of the competition.

Spain’s presence at Euro 2020 was also in jeopardy at the beginning of the day but they sliced through Slovakia to secure a morale-boosting 5-0 win amid a backdrop of criticism concerning their toothless edge in front of goal.

The final fixtures in Group E and Group F brought down the curtain on a group stage that, as is typical of major international tournaments, unearthed some little-known gems and provided a grand stage for world football’s most gifted players to consolidate their already otherworldly status.

Six of the most outstanding performers have earned nominations for the GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Euro 2020 Group Stage award.

By relying on a combination of raw statistics and the good old-fashioned eye test, we’ve outlined one nomination from all six groups to compete for the best individual player of the Euro 2020 group stage.

Let’s take a look at the nominees below:

Group A: Manuel Locatelli

Every great Azzurri side needs an Italian Stallion to marshal the midfield and Robert Mancini has an all-action lieutenant with a complete footballing repertoire in the shape of Manuel Locatelli.

The Sassuolo midfielder has rapidly established himself as one of the most coveted players on the continent during the tournament, providing a stark screen for the defensive unit by completing ten tackles and four ball recoveries in just two games.

Serie A giants Juventus are reportedly progressing in talks to sign Locatelli, who Sassuolo are demanding £34m for, and no wonder given he’s managed to supplement his diligent defensive work with two goals.

In a midfield that includes Jorginho, Marco Verratti and Nicolo Barella, Locatelli has been the most eye-catching technician of the bunch.

Group B: Romelu Lukaku

Belgium’s all-time record goal scorer has picked up where he left off in Serie A this season by notching three goals in his opening three games to move into joint-second in the race for the Golden Boot.

That’s the type of prolific form that will only intensify rumours linking him with a summer move to Manchester City, but Lukaku has remained firm on his line that he is happy at Inter Milan.

Not only has the 28-year-old been potent in and around the penalty area, he’s also showcased the vast improvements he’s made to his hold-up play at the spearhead of a Roberto Martinez side that has every chance of finally crowning Belgium’s golden era with an elusive trophy.

Group C: Frenkie de Jong

Georginino Wijnaldum has stolen the headlines with three goals in the group stage for the Netherlands but Frenkie de Jong’s artistry in the midfield has been a sight to behold at Euro 2020.

The Barcelona midfielder’s reputation hasn’t quite taken off as many expected it to since he joined the Catalan giants from Ajax, owing much to a club-wide decline rather than individual faults of his own.

However, anyone who has doubted De Jong’s ability will have been left in awe of his playmaking prowess so far, while the grittier side of his game has come to the fore in the shape of seven tackles and a whopping 19 ball recoveries in three appearances.

Group D: Patrik Schick

England topped the group with seven points and a three-game long clean sheet but it was Patrik Schick’s brilliance in the Czech Republic’s opening two games that particularly caught the eye in Group D.

The Bayer Leverkusen star scored the undisputed Goal of the Tournament against Scotland to add to an exceptionally well placed header in the same game, while his penalty against Croatia ultimately enabled the Czechs to guarantee their place in the last-16 before a ball was kicked against England earlier this week.

If Jaroslav Silhavy’s side manage to stage an upset against the Netherlands in the last-16, then Schick is bound to be the protagonist.

Group E: Emil Forsberg

Emil Forsberg scored nine goals in 41 games for RB Leipzig in the 2020/21 season and he’s continued his rich vein of goal scoring form at Euro 2020.

Alexander Isak has been the star of the Swedish show so far, leaving pundits and spectators gushing over his ballerina-like quick-feet, but Forsberg has been a pulsating presence in the midfield and a deadly goal threat to boot.

His expertly taken brace helped Sweden on their way to a 3-2 win against Poland which enabled them to top Group E and set up a last-16 tie with Ukraine next Tuesday.

Aside from his goals, Forsberg has completed 78% of his passes and five ball recoveries.

Group F: Cristiano Ronaldo

Who else? Cristiano Ronaldo has already posted his best ever goal scoring return at a major international tournament by notching five in Portugal’s opening three games.

It’s difficult to fathom that Ronaldo is achieving this level of success at 36 years old, and the quality of his displays thus far suggest he’ll still be on the scene by the time the next European Championships swing round in 2024.

He also provided an assist and won seven fouls for his team in a group that included two sides in France and Germany who both have the tools required to win the competition.

The physical forces of this world that apply to mere mortals don’t seem to have been felt by Ronaldo just yet.

Celtic: Ryan now Postecoglou’s top target

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan is now Ange Postecoglou’s top Celtic target, according to Scott Burns of The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Hoops make Ryan promise

It took just three days for Ryan to be linked with a move to the club following Postecoglou’s switch to Celtic Park was confirmed.

The pair worked together during Postecoglou’s four-year stint as Australia boss, with the 55-year-old making Ryan his number one at the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Asia Cup.

Reports last month claimed that Celtic were putting a contract package together for Ryan and were ready to offer him the number one shirt at Parkhead.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-7/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Burns claim

Burns, who broke the news regarding Celtic’s move for Sheffield Wednesday defender Osaze Urhoghide on Thursday hours before it was announced, shared a story on Thursday evening.

He claimed that Postecoglou is likely to bring in a new shot-stopper with Ryan a top target.

The Verdict: Sign

If Postecoglou now sees Ryan as a top target, Celtic should do everything they can to grant his wish ahead of the new season.

He’ll know just what the 29-year-old would bring to Parkhead and could end up solving the club’s goalkeeping dilemma.

Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard were all handed opportunities last season, with Neil Lennon unsure on who to stick with throughout the previous campaign.

Ryan, who has 58 international caps and 124 Premier League appearances under his belt could be the ideal addition and a deal looks financially doable.

A price between £3-5m has been touted, but Ryan may have to take a slight hit on his £35,000-a-week wage if he wants to move to Scotland, with Callum McGregor the club’s top earner on £20,000-a-week.
