Pochettino must drop £100k-pw Chelsea star who lost the ball 19x vs Everton

Chelsea's Premier League campaign has just gone from bad to worse this season. From shocking home defeats to Nottingham Forest to humbling away defeats to an equally dysfunctional Manchester United side.

And to make things worse, club captain Reece James is now set to spend another period on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury in the club's 2-0 defeat away to Everton last week.

There were plenty of poor performers that day, but one of the worst, and one of the worst all season for that matter, must be dropped ahead of Saturday, Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mykhailo Mudryk's game vs Everton in numbers

Mauricio Pochettino started the Ukranian wideman out on the left ahead of Raheem Sterling, perhaps hoping that against a supposedly relegation-threatened Everton side, he could play himself into some form; whatever the thinking behind the decision was, it backfired.

The Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella gave the 22-year-old a rather generous 6/10, praising his supposed threat but lamenting him for being tremendously 'wasteful' in possession.

In his 97 minutes of football, Mudryk lost the ball 19 times, meaning he lost the ball every five minutes, a statistic so poor that it is almost laughable – almost.

It's a surprise that his teammates didn't just stop passing him the ball.

The £100k-per-week speedster also failed to take a single shot, let alone one on target, only succeeded in half of his crosses and registered a paltry expected goals figure of 0.05.

There are signs that there is a talented footballer in there, but it just hasn't worked yet this season and if Pochettino wants to give the fans something to cheer about on Saturday afternoon, Mudryk cannot play.

Raheem Sterling must start against Sheffield United

The former Manchester City star has been in relatively good form for Chelsea this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists in the 16 games he has played.

In his last home game that wasn't disrupted by a Chelsea red card, the England international was fantastic and scored a goal against Pep Guardiloa's treble-winning City side – reminding his old boss just how good he is.

He registered a genuinely impressive expected goals figure of 0.45 and an expected assists figure of 0.14, took two shots, completed four dribbles, made one key pass and even made a clearance for his side.

The Daily Mail's Adrian Kajumba gave the 29-year-old an 8.5/10 for his performance and described him as 'up for it all game.'

Premier League and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer proclaimed the winger "incredible" after the match, and it's hard to disagree.

Ultimately, with Chelsea in desperate need of a win this weekend, Pochettino should already have Sterling's name down on the teamsheet and Mudryk's firmly on the bench.

Liverpool could sink West Ham by unleashing "special" star alongside Quansah

Liverpool's goalless draw against Manchester United felt like a defeat to many Reds supporters, but Anfield must now ready itself once again to take on West Ham United for a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Having been terrible for large portions of the 2022/23 campaign, Jurgen Klopp's side's ascendancy this season has been indicative of the manager's world-class leadership skills, with Arsenal just one point ahead in first place in the Premier League after 17 matches.

The Gunners are next up in the English top-flight, travelling to Merseyside on Saturday evening in what will be a fiery encounter between two teams with equal belief in their title-winning credentials, but first Liverpool must ensure that they dispatch the Hammers and move closer to silverware.

Last year, Liverpool only won the Community Shield in the curtain-raiser before a stark decline resulted in a fifth-placed Premier League finish and confirmed the fates of most of the sapped midfield, all shipped on after illustrious success, legs gone.

The term prior, Liverpool completed the domestic cup double and came within a whisker of the Premier League and Champions League trophies, a triumph which would have resulted in a historic quadruple; to rekindle the winning feeling, the Carabao Cup must be gleaned.

Liverpool team news vs West Ham

Klopp is juggling a deluge of injuries at present to compound the existing long-term absences of Spanish midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic, left-back Andy Robertson and Joel Matip, none of which are expected back any time soon.

Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota remain sidelined but are expected to be nearing a return from respective problems, while Ryan Gravenberch could be in contention to feature after being forced off against Manchester United with discomfort in his hamstring.

Red assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed that Caoimhin Kelleher will start in goal tonight, alluding to further rotation too with Mikel Arteta's squad arriving in just three days.

Why Jarell Quansah must start vs West Ham

So Kelleher will deputise between the sticks for the third time in the League Cup this season, giving the seemingly infallible Alisson Becker a rest before a crucial Premier League encounter.

Ibrahima Konate will be important in subduing the Gunners frontline at the weekend too, and, as such, must be rested against West Ham, allowing 20-year-old centre-back Jarell Quansah to continue his rise and produce a commanding display in the rearguard.

Virgil van Dijk will probably retain his spot in the side for both matches, instilling command and composure to ensure that his players engineer success, but the blend of youth and experience could work well.

Quansah might be young, but since earning a shot in the first-team this season, he has amassed 12 appearances and posted a goal and an assist apiece, with vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold describing him as "absolutely phenomenal" for his start to life among the seniors.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 5 titan ranks among the top 1% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and passes attempted, the top 5% for pass completion and the top 12% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing his innate eye for goal and crispness in possession that will be important in establishing control against the Irons.

He will be required to step up and perform against a Hammers frontline that consists of free-scoring duo Jarrod Bowen and Mohamed Kudus and creative string-puller Lucas Paqueta.

It will not be a walk in the park, and while Quansah will be important, the performances of those in front of him will be equally (if not more) crucial, with the draw against Manchester United illuminating a lack of innovation and zest in the midfield.

Harvey Elliott's time to shine

To bring life back to the engine room, Harvey Elliott could provide the spark to unlock the opposition's defensive block, with the England U21 international starting to underscore his potential as a focal point in the future.

Still only 20 years old, Elliott started all six of Liverpool's Europa League group stage fixtures and both of the Carabao Cup ties thus far, though he has only received one role from the outset in the league, recently expressing his discontent at the role of 'super sub' after scoring a late winner against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

The £40k-per-week machine ranks among the top 2% of midfielders for shots taken, the top 11% for shot-creating actions, the top 8% for progressive passes, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 17% for blocks per 90, drawing comparisons to Jude Bellingham and Bernardo Silva – as per FBref's player comparison tool.

Described as a “special” talent by pundit Jamie Carragher, Elliott has created three key passes across both Carabao Cup games this term, completing 83% of his passes and remarkably making 7.5 recoveries per outing – this is exactly the kind of energy and inspiration that Liverpool need to restore their blistering offensive verve.

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

While the 5 foot 7 gem has yet to cement a regular starting role in the Premier League, a talismanic display against West Ham to send Liverpool one step closer to the semi-finals may well prove to win Klopp over and hand him a more prominent role – especially after Dominik Szoboszlai's recent decline in form.

With the action coming thick and fast, it makes perfect sense for Klopp to issue rotation and provide the likes of Quansah and Elliott with opportunities to impress in an important cup clash.

Moyes will hope to exploit their ostensible inexperience, but the exciting talents will feel that they can rise to the occasion and ensure that Liverpool's seasonal revival continues.

Big club hold talks with Leeds to sign Struijk but 49ers are standing firm

A big European club have reportedly held talks with a "crucial" Leeds United player over a possible move, with a transfer potentially now going through next summer.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites continue to battle hard in the Championship promotion race, and while their 2-1 defeat away to Preston on Boxing Day was a disappointing result, they still find themselves in a strong position in fourth place. The January transfer window will give Leeds the opportunity to make more signings, should Daniel Farke feel that fresh faces could make all the difference in the second half of the season.

Larne youngster Jack Hastings is one player who has been linked with a move to Elland Road, but the 17-year-old forward would be viewed as one for the future, rather than a player who is going to come in and make an immediate difference to the first team. Meanwhile, Celtic's Matt O'Riley may also been seen as a possible option again, having seen a bid for him turned down during the summer window.

It is also important that Leeds retain the services of the most influential players at the club, though, especially midway through the season, but a worrying exit rumour has emerged regarding one such hero.

PSG could sign Pascal Struijk

According to a fresh update from L'Equipe, PSG have held talks to sign Leeds ace Pascal Struijk and could yet sign him next summer. The Ligue 1 giants are thought to be keen on the idea of signing a left-footed centre-back and have targeted the Whites man as someone who could be a key addition in that area.

Pascal Struijk

However, Leeds have made it clear that they don't want to part ways with Struijk, seemingly driving up his price tag and holding firm, so PSG certainly won't have it all their own way with negotiations, with the 49ers Enterprises clearly meaning business. PSG have moved on to Sao Paulo's Lucas Beraldo as a more immediate addition in January, the report adds.

The Dutchman has become such an important player for the Whites down the years, and he could be key to his side's chances of earning promotion this season, already making 22 starts in the Championship. The stats also below also outline the influence he has enjoyed:

Meanwhile, Farke clearly sees him as a valuable figure moving forward, with the Leeds manager saying of him recently:

"He adapted well to my demands and he’s played a crucial part. We don’t have to talk about his skills with the ball. I’m very pleased with his development."

The lure of playing for a prestigious club in PSG could be something that turns Struijk's head, however, especially if Leeds don't get out of the Championship, but it is good to see the 49ers standing firm and not buckling at the pressure of dealing with a European giant such as PSG.

Despite appearing in the Champions League for only 20 minutes for the German side this season, the American player could get a winners' medal if Edin Terzic's side manages to beat Real Madrid in the final at Wembley on Saturday.

Newcastle can forget Wilson by landing "extraordinary" Kluivert 2.0

Prior to the PIF takeover back in 2021, the main aim for Newcastle United was to buy players to help them survive in the Premier League. Often, this led to puzzling recruitment and a hangover of players who weren't good enough to play in the top flight.

However, now the club can go out in the transfer market and sign players who are young, hungry and have incredibly high ceilings such as Sven Botman, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento.

Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to put this recruitment strategy to work once more before the January window passes.

Newcastle United transfer news – Joshua Zirkzee

According to a report from TuttoBolognaWeb, Newcastle are interested in signing Bologna's dynamite Dutch centre-forward Joshua Zirkzee before the winter window slams shut. The outlet are claiming that the Magpies face stiff competition from the likes of English rivals Manchester United and Italian duo AC Milan and Juventus for the striker's signature.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Having signed in 2022 from Bayern Munich for a reported £8.6m, Zirkzee has been in fine form for the Rossoblu this season under Thiago Motta and the manager even described his 22-year-old sensation as an "extraordinary" player.

Zirkzee spent several years with the Bundesliga giants, coming up through Die Roten's academy, but scored just four goals in 17 appearances.

The in-demand talent struggled to break into Bayern's side as a result of being behind goal-machine Robert Lewandowski in the pecking order. However, the former Netherlands U21 international has reignited his career at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, garnering interest from Newcastle in the process, and reportedly has a release clause of £34m – although this is only valid for his former employers at the Allianz Arena.

Joshua Zirkzee's stats this season

Callum Wilson is no longer the main man at St. James' Park anymore, that title is now held by Alexander Isak who is Newcastle's top goalscorer this season with 13 goals. The England international hasn't started a game for the Magpies since before Christmas and only has one goal in his last nine appearances in the black and white stripes.

With Wilson now on the wrong side of 30, as he's set to turn 32 in February, Howe may be considering the long-term future of his forward department and whether Wilson can continue to play at the intensity he requires from his centre-forwards. Zirkzee has scored the same number of goals as Wilson this season, with eight goals apiece, but the Dutchman has four assists to the Newcastle striker's one, meaning he adds that something extra when leading the line.

Furthermore, Zirkzee looks like a more well-rounded frontman statistically in comparison to Wilson which has seemingly piqued Howe's interest.

Zirkzee has been a better finisher than Wilson this season based on the outperformance of his xG, but the young striker is certainly a far more creative player and could help get Newcastle's frontline firing again.

Toon fans may also recall the last time Newcastle signed a highly-rated Dutch centre-forward back in 2004 by the name of Patrick Kluivert.

The Barcelona and Ajax legend went on to record 13 goals and two assists for the Geordie outfit in 37 appearances, having also had experience in Italy's top flight before his move, with then-boss Sir Bobby Robson describing the deal as "one of the most significant signings in Newcastle in many years"

Despite his time at St James' Park having only been brief – as he merely lasted a season before joining Valencia – the 6 foot 3 ace still managed to make an impact, having been hailed as a "special player" by ex-teammate, Jermain Jenas.

Zirkzee – who is also an imposing frontman like Kluivert, at 6 foot 4 – has the chance to be even better than his compatriot on Tyneside.

Harry Kane reveals how back injury has done him a 'favour' after scoring for England on return to action ahead of Euro 2024

England captain Harry Kane is hopeful a recent back injury has worked in his favour ahead of Euro 2024, scoring on his first appearance in a month.

  • Kane returns from back injury
  • Scores England's third goal against Bosnia
  • Optimistic about his fitness
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane scored England's third goal of Monday night's 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina off the bench, the first of two Euro 2024 warm-up friendlies, having replaced Ollie Watkins for the final 28 minutes plus stoppage time at St James' Park.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was Kane's first opportunity to get on the pitch since Bayern Munich's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg on May 8. A back injury forced him to miss the final two games of the Bundesliga season, but he's confident that a few weeks off playing actually came at the right time.

  • WHAT KANE SAID

"I'm feeling good," Kane told "A lot of the end of season was precaution. It was a good chance to get a good break at the end of the season. I feel fine. I'm sure I'll get some minutes on Friday [against Iceland]. It's always worked in my favour, it's about getting minutes. I'm not someone who takes too long to get sharp."

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE & ENGLAND?

Iceland visit Wembley on June 7 for England's farewell before flying to Germany. After naming a heavily rotated side to face Bosnia, manager Gareth Southgate would be hoping to pick something more like the team he will expect to start against Serbia on June 16, with the squad also needing to be cut by seven players. Jude Bellingham is yet to report for duty after the Champions League final, while Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Harry Maguire and John Stones are all working on their fitness. Declan Rice remained unused against Bosnia, and Phil Foden wasn't on the bench.

Aston Villa could land their next Jack Grealish with exciting January move

Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign defender Kosta Nedeljkovic from Serbian side Red Star Belgrade and loan him back to the club for the remainder of the season.

He is only 18 and is clearly a signing for the future but this appears to be what Unai Emery is building at the club, a team which could be a consistent force in the Premier League while challenging for trophies.

It is working wonders so far this season, with summer signings Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby contributing alongside current players Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey to power the Midlands club to the heady heights of third in the table, along with progress in Europe and in the FA Cup.

Unai Emery

Could Emery perhaps make more signings during the current January transfer window? Reportedly, he is keen on a reunion with a player he used to manage during his spell as Arsenal manager.

Aston Villa’s search for another signing

Emery is currently looking to sign Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal this month and the Spaniard knows the Englishman well, having managed the club between 2018 and 2019.

Previous Villa managers have also wanted to sign the talented midfielder too, as Dean Smith reportedly made an offer of £25m in 2021 to bring him to the Midlands, yet this was turned down.

Recent reports state that the north Londoners are now willing to sell Smith Rowe to Villa and could this month finally be the time they secure his services?

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook spoke to GIVEMESPORT regarding Villa’s interest in the 23-year-old recently, saying:

The duo not only sport the same look on the pitch – both preferring the short socks look – but they also regularly drift past opponents with their impressive dribbling style and this is something Emery needs in his current side.

According to WhoScored, the current Arsenal gem excels at finishing and holding onto the ball, while Grealish also counts holding onto the ball as one of his key strengths, yet his development has allowed him to further excel courtesy of through balls and key passes.

bryan-gil-jack-grealish-tottenham-opinion

Give Smith Rowe time and the chance to perform at a consistent level, however, and he could shortly be alongside Grealish.

Both players possess a clear attacking threat in front of goal. Smith Howe has registered 35 goal contributions in 130 senior matches, while the City gem has played more matches – 364 games – and has scored 51 goals along with grabbing 67 assists in what has been an excellent career thus far.

Emery could give the 23-year-old his confidence back and adding a player of his talent to his squad could be a no-brainer this month. There is no doubt about it.

Emile Smith Rowe’s season in numbers

During his senior career, Smith Rowe has already missed a total of 77 matches due to a succession of injuries and this season, he has been disrupted by a knee issue which has seen him miss nine games.

This has meant the player has played only 12 times during 2023/24, registering one assist, and it is clear he isn’t able to force his way into Arteta’s starting XI often enough.

Indeed, of these 12 games, only two have been starts, and he proved he is more effective being unleashed from the first whistle, as his only assist came during his only Premier League start.

Emile Smith Rowe for England U21s.

He has succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts in the top flight during his brief spell on the pitch this term, along with winning an impressive 75% of his aerial duels. But the truth is, he hasn’t been given enough time to showcase his talents this season.

The £40k-per-week starlet needs a fresh move to live up to his vast promise and a reunion with Emery could be the ideal move.

Journalist Mark Mann-Bryans hailed the youngster as a potential “game-changer” two years ago when it looked as though he could follow Bukayo Saka from the Hale End academy into being a standout for the first team.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite worked out that way for the Englishman as injuries have begun to take their toll, and he could slip into the wilderness unless he makes a move away from the Emirates.

Villa are relying far too much on Ollie Watkins for goals, as the striker is currently sitting on 14 goals for the current season – five clear of anyone else – but if he gets injured, then they could be in trouble.

Smith Rowe could operate in a few different positions, yet playing just behind the striker appears to be his favoured role and the one where he can make the most difference. Also capable of playing from the left, it's clear to see why we're making such a comparison to the aforementioned Grealish.

If Emery is looking to finally deliver a major trophy to the Villa supporters after a near three-decade wait, adding some depth to his squad this month could be vital.

He still has a couple of weeks to bring in some more players, and if he does manage to sign the Arsenal outcast this month, it could potentially bring out the best in the midfielder who is in need of regular minutes.

Tottenham in talks and working hard to complete another deal alongside Nusa

Tottenham and the recruitment team are "working hard" to complete another deal alongside Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa, with transfer talks currently ongoing.

Spurs still locked in Nusa negotiations

Last week, news emerged from Belgium that Spurs had opened negotiations with Brugge in an attempt to prise away the exciting 18-year-old.

The north Londoners want Nusa in a buy-to-loan-back style move, similar to how they agreed transfers for both Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr in previous years.

Both of the aforementioned Spurs starlets have gone on to become real success stories under manager Ange Postecoglou, with Udogie now indispensable at left-back and Sarr impressing regularly in midfield.

Nusa would be chairman Daniel Levy's third capture after midfielder Timo Werner signed from RB Leipzig on loan and defender Radu Dragusin swapped Genoa for north London in a permanent deal.

However, things aren't quite done and dusted yet, with reports even suggesting that Premier League rivals Newcastle could hijack a move to sign Nusa before February 1.

Former Tottenham keeper Erik Thorstvedt is convinced the teenage sensation would thrive at N17, and has backed Nusa to get opportunities under Postecoglou.

"I heard some hints about this a few weeks ago," Thorstvedt told Norwegian media outlet Nettavisen recently.

"So I knew it could be on the cards. It's really cool. Tottenham are a fantastic club to come to right now. They have such good tools now that they do a tremendously thorough job. It is also reassuring for the player that they know what they are buying.

"Nusa is still very young, but Postecoglou is not afraid to pick people. He will get his opportunities and he is so good that he will take them."

Amid these discussions for Nusa, there are reports that Postecoglou is also keen to sign a new midfielder for Spurs. This could be dependent on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future at the club, but links to the likes of Chelsea star Conor Gallagher and others are refusing to go away as we approach deadline day.

Tottenham "in discussions" to sign new midfielder

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Spurs are in discussions to sign a new midfielder alongside Nusa.

It is believed the Lilywhites are "working to complete a deal" for one before the window shuts, though it is unclear as to who they currently chasing in that regard.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane had a sensational debut season with the Bundesliga side, scoring 44 times in 45 games, even though they could only muster a third-place finish in the German top-flight. Ex-Germany star Klinsmann says that misery will not carry on to next season, though, and has been impressed by how well Kane has settled into life in Munich.

  • WHAT KLINSMANN SAID

"Kane will win trophies with Bayern next season, there’s no doubt," he told . "The way he settled in with the club and the people has been exceptional. He’s the best ambassador England can have in Germany. On the pitch, he’s like an automatic machine. And the way he introduced himself to the Munich lifestyle — with a big beer at Oktoberfest and a white sausage for breakfast — they adore him."
