Iraola could turn Ange's "really good signing" into a monster at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat at Fulham kept them ten points behind Bournemouth on the rim of the top half of the Premier League, and it’s increasingly unlikely success will be found on the domestic front this season.

Ange Postecoglou is deep in his purgatory, cutting so many gloomy figures as the defeats roll in like hostile bowling balls. Spurs have indeed been left sprawling on the turf for much of the campaign, but hope remains.

Battling past AZ Alkmaar this month, the north Londoners are into the Europa League quarter-finals, pitted against dangerous Eintracht Frankfurt – who won the 2021/22 edition – next month.

Ange's increasingly uncertain future

Postecoglou is aggrieved as ‘Ange Ball’ has been reduced to flashes of style this season, injuries precluding his exciting tactics from being properly implemented. It has been a tough old season, and he’ll want to approach 2025/26 with a clean slate.

According to Monday’s Telegraph, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is one of the leading candidates to take over at Tottenham Hotspur should Ange be given the boot.

Postecoglou will make a compelling case to Daniel Levy regarding the importance of keeping him in the dugout, but the 42-year-old Bournemouth boss would be the perfect replacement, should the headsman be summoned.

What Andoni Iraola could bring to Spurs

If Tottenham fall against Frankfurt after the international break, Postecoglou will earn no reprieve as Levy’s patience finally wears gossamer thin.

Especially if the Lilywhites chairman gets a whiff of something promising from Iraola’s corner.

Bournemouth appointed the tactician in June 2023 after the expiry of his Rayo Vallecano contract. It was a bold, some even felt brazen, decision to oust Gary O’Neil after he kept the seaside town afloat, but a tremendous one in hindsight.

Tenth in the standings this year, Bournemouth trail Chelsea in the top four by a mere five points. Much is owed to Iraola’s stylish tactics.

Rayo Vallecano coachAndoniIraola

According to Understat, the Cherries are behind only Liverpool in terms of xG (expected goals this season. They have converted 48 chances but should have notched 59.42, speaking of profligacy in front of goal.

What does this tell us? Well, for one thing, it makes a declaration on Bournemouth’s attacking quality, with aggression and a pack mentality toward winning turnovers and advancing into dangerous positions proving the nuts and bolts of the approach play.

While Postecoglou is a fiercely attack-focused manager himself, there are signs Iraola has his number. After all, Understat also record the Australian’s squad to have an xG total of 52.90 in the Premier League this year.

Dominic Solanke was brought in last summer as a belated Harry Kane replacement down N17. The 27-year-old joined from Iraola’s Bournemouth, signing for a club-record £65m figure.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

In keeping with the season’s narrative, the £90k-per-week Solanke has suffered a share of injury misfortune, though he’s still managed to chalk up 11 goals and eight assists across all competitions, starting 27 of his 33 outings.

But he’s not quite hit the heights the lofty price tag spoke of. A seven-goal return in the Premier League across 20 matches is average at best. Ten big chances missed, as per Sofascore, further detail a lack of incisiveness that Tottenham have desperately needed to stem their defensive problems.

Were Iraola to take the helm in the summer, the England international may return to the prolific heights of 2023/24, when he plied his trade under the Spanish gaffer’s wing.

That season saw Bournemouth break free of the relegation fodder and make headway in the top flight, fuelled by an attractive brand of football. Solanke was riding the crest of a wave, for sure, clinching 19 goals across the term, missing just 14 big chances and averaging a key pass every game (his rate stands at 0.7 with Spurs).

This serves as more corroboration as to Tottenham’s inferiority (this year, at least) in front of goal. Iraola is churning out a higher rate of clinical production and doing so with a flourish.

Solanke has already thrived in the system, the manager even hailing him as “good for any system,” his technical qualities making him the “complete number nine.”

As a consequence, it could just be a match made in heaven.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

There is of course optimism that Solanke can make a name for himself over the coming years, maybe even the coming months. Postecoglou’s ideology should be perfect for him, but Iraola has showcased a tactical grasp beyond that of Spurs’ somewhat rigid boss, eking every ounce of potency from him last year.

Postecoglou once presented the blueprint for total success at Tottenham. It was a new dawn, the start of a chapter promising prosperity. But the cracks have since splintered the playing surface, running deep. The period following the international break will be critical.

And if Levy gets some encouragement from Iraola’s camp? Why, he’d be bringing “one of the best in the league” down N17, as is the opinion of analyst Ben Mattinson.

Talks of a sacking might be held in abeyance at the moment, but Postecoglou is quickly running out of time. With Iraola doing such good work on the South Coast, indeed getting the best from Solanke, bringing him in as a replacement might be a golden ticket toward a new level of success.

Sancho's future is unclear after Chelsea opted against taking up a buy option in his loan contract and instead paid £5 million ($6.76m) to send him back to Manchester United. According to the Mirror, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has "no intention" of reintegrating Sancho back into the squad at Old Trafford, particularly as the Red Devils are keen to sign Bryan Mbeumo.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A move to the Saudi Pro League now appears a possibility for Sancho as top European clubs are unlikely to want to pay his £300,000-a-week wages. Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad are all keen, while Sancho is said to have "links to high-profile figures in the Saudi Pro-League which could help broker a deal." Manchester United eager to offload Sancho as he's heading into the final year of his contract and may be willing to accept a fee of £25m ($34m).

    WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO

Sancho and Manchester United will now hope to find a solution that suits all parties over the summer. The winger appears to have no future at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils will hope to agree a permanent transfer in time for the 2025-26 campaign.

Man Utd thought they had their new Beckham, but Ten Hag sold him for £9m

Over the years, Manchester United has been the home to countless players who have become fan favourites and made a name for themselves at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville was the club’s number-one right-back for numerous years, with no player able to dislodge the now pundit from his starting role, allowing him to rack up a huge total of appearances.

The Englishman made over 600 appearances over a near-two-decade spell in the first-team, playing a crucial role under Sir Alex Ferguson, helping the Red Devils win various trophies during his reign.

He was part of the infamous Class of 92 which saw players such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt join the defender in the senior side, undoubtedly being one of the most successful crop of academy graduates in history.

The talents were also joined at Old Trafford by one other star who endured a phenomenal career as a professional, catching the eye with his superb set-piece ability.

David Beckham’s stats at Manchester United

After retiring from the professional game, David Beckham has taken his fame and notoriety to the next level, but his time in the United first team set him on his path to stardom.

The Englishman stood out from the crowd in that era, with his technique and quality on the ball catching the eye and allowing him to become one of the best midfielder’s during the 1990s.

He became infamous for his set-piece ability, scoring 18 free-kicks during his 265 appearances in the Premier League – the most of any player in the division’s history.

Beckham would go on to make 390 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 85 times and registering 121 assists – contributing to six league title wins during his spell at the club.

However, he would subsequently leave Old Trafford in July 2003, joining European giants Real Madrid, ending his 11-year spell in the first-team at Old Trafford.

There are very few players who possess the quality Beckham did on the ball, but the Red Devils had one player who was tipped to emulate him before being prematurely offloaded.

The former United ace who could’ve been the next Beckham

Former boss Erik ten Hag ultimately struggled to be a success during his time in charge at the Theatre of Dreams, leading to his sacking earlier this campaign.

The Dutchman spent upwards of £600m on new signings to try and turn the club’s fortunes around, with many of the additions made failing to live up to expectations.

Such dealings led to numerous talents being offloaded to balance the books, including academy graduate James Garner, who left in a £9m deal to join Everton in the summer of 2022.

Everton midfielder James Garner

The now 24-year-old spent 13 years as a player on United’s books, only making seven senior appearances, with loan spells at the likes of Watford and Nottingham Forest before his permanent move.

His spell at the latter of the two clubs highlighted his technical ability, often producing moments of magic similar to those of Beckham with his dipping efforts on goal.

Former Manchester City ace Trevor Sinclair claimed that ‘James Garner’s deliveries remind me of David Beckham’s’ with the whip he’s able to put on the ball creating opportunities for himself or his teammates.

Injuries have halted his progress at Goodison Park this season, restricting him to just 14 appearances across all competitions, but he’s still been able to operate in a box-to-box role, just like Beckham did during his time in Manchester.

His stats produced this campaign are evidence of the talent he possesses, with the Englishman undoubtedly having the tools to be a success in Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad, but unfortunately, he will never get that chance after Ten Hag’s decision to sell him.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite reports claiming that Rodrygo is looking to leave Madrid, and that the club are ready to cash in on the player this summer, Rodrygo has maintained a professional attitude and has taken part in all of Alonso's training sessions this week. In fact, Spanish media has suggested that the player wants to stay at the club and fight for his place under Alonso, with whom he is set to hold talks regarding where he fits into the manager's plans.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Alonso hailed Rodrygo as a "spectacular" player during his presentation press conference in May, adding that he is part of his plans. That, though, hasn't stopped other teams from pursuing a potential move for the Brazilian international this summer. In particular, Arsenal and Chelsea are the two teams who have been linked with Rodrygo the most in the past few weeks. If he were to leave this summer, Los Blancos will reportedly demand a figure between €80 million (£67m/$91m) and €100m (£84m/$114m).

Moises Caicedo salary: How much does Chelsea star earn per week and annually in Premier League?

Everything you need to know about Moises Caicedo's salary at Chelsea

Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo made his Premier League debut with Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021. He was initially loaned out to Belgian side Beerschot for the season, but Brighton recalled him in January due to a shortage of midfielders.

Caicedo broke into the starting lineup during the 2022-23 season, delivering consistent performances under then-manager Roberto De Zerbi. He played a key role in helping Brighton secure a sixth-place finish and qualification for European competition.

It wasn’t long before Chelsea came knocking, offering a staggering transfer fee to secure his services.

Caicedo joined the Blues ahead of the 2023-24 season on an eight-year contract, which came with a substantial pay package.

GiveMeSport sources have since reported that, in the aftermath of their London derby loss, Postecoglou might not even get that long. Amidst the consistent noise regarding his long-term future, the 59-year-old has adopted a relaxed mindset, suggesting there will be many outstanding candidates to replace him.

“I know what my responsibilities are. I’m sure if the club decide to go in a different direction, there are some outstanding candidates out there for it,” said Postecoglou on his potential replacement.

“It doesn’t rock my world, it doesn’t consume me. I am here and passionate about what we are doing. I was brought in to change the way the club plays, rejuvenate the squad and bring success. I am focused on that and that’s what I’ll keep doing.”

Postecoglou also commented on a potential return one day for ex-Spurs fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino, now manager of the USA ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where the States will play joint-hosts of their most important tournament since the 1990s.

MauricioPochettinocoach of U.S. during the match

“If he wants to come back one day then I hope it happens for him,” Postecoglou said when asked about Pochettino.

This follows comments made by the Argentine that he’d one day like to make a return to Tottenham, following five impressive years in N17 where he also guided them to an unprecedented Champions League final.

Stan Collymore urges Mauricio Pochettino not to re-join Tottenham

Now, writing in his column, pundit Collymore has urged Pochettino not to re-join Tottenham, following alleged talks with chairman Levy.

“There has been rumours of Mauricio Pochettino possibly making a return to Tottenham, having seemingly held talks with Daniel Levy,” wrote Collymore for CaughtOffside.

“But if I was him, I would not go anywhere near his former club, as I think very little has changed from when he left in 2019. I was at the Champions League final that year when Liverpool defeated them, and I remember very clearly how frustrated he was with the club after that. If he came back, he [wouldn’t] be given the tools to do the job that he wanted, so it would make little sense for him to be willing to go back there.”

Since being sacked by Levy in 2019, Pochettino has gone on to manage Chelsea and win a Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain. He’d be a fantastic appointment considering his proven track record and experience at Tottenham, but supporters would most likely have to wait a while for any reunion.

'Always part of the Anfield family' – Jose Mourinho pays beautiful tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota

Jose Mourinho paid a heartfelt tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota on the sidelines of the British Grand Prix. The football world has been left devastated by the tragic death of the Portugal international, who passed away in a fatal car crash in northern Spain on Thursday. The 28-year-old forward was travelling with his brother when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre failure, veered off the road and burst into flames.

Jota and his brother will be laid to rest on Saturday in Gondomar, their hometown in Portugal. WHAT MOURINHO SAID

Among the many prominent figures to pay homage to Jota was his compatriot Mourinho. While speaking at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Portuguese coach offered heartfelt words in memory of the late striker.

"When people leave this world, normally we all say 'such a nice guy'. Diogo was really a nice guy," Mourinho told

"He had my agent [Jorge Mendes], so of course I knew a lot about him. And people in Liverpool know what I’m saying is true. He is a kid who nothing was easy for him, he had to fight to arrive where he arrived. Three kids without a dad, a young woman without her husband, the parents lose both sons…it’s crazy. It’s difficult to understand. Maybe one day we will understand but not now."

  • A SOUL THAT STAYS FOREVER

The tragedy brought back painful memories for Mourinho, who recalled the death of Rui Filipe, a Porto midfielder, in a similar accident in 1994. At the time, Mourinho was serving as assistant to Bryan Robson.

"It happened with me many, many years ago when I was working at Porto with Mr Robson. One of our boys, a loved boy, died in a car crash," he narrated.

"Instead of the boys suffering alone it was like the group suffered together and trying to fight for his memory. It was a boy Rui Filipe and we were champions, I think, for him. In Liverpool they’re going to suffer together. The club is a fantastic club. I think they are deciding to take away the shirt number 20. At Anfield he will always be part of the family and maybe they lose a player but maybe they win even more soul than what they have."

    A LEGACY THAT LIVES ON

Memorials will no doubt spring up both in Liverpool and Portugal, as supporters remember the man who brought so much joy to the game. As Mourinho so poignantly put it, Jota may no longer wear the red of Liverpool, but his presence will forever be felt at Anfield.

Real Madrid player ratings vs. Juventus: Trent Alexander-Arnold gets up and running – ex-Liverpool ace grabs his first assist as Los Blancos book spot in Club World Cup quarters

Xabi Alonso's side clinched a spot in the last eight with a narrow victory over the Italian giants.

Gonzalo Garcia scored the only goal and Trent Alexander-Arnold notched his first assist for Real Madrid as Los Blancos edged Juventus to book a spot in the Club World Cup quarter-final. Xabi Alonso's side turned a poor first half into a comprehensive second, and were good value for their win – even if they were far from dominant.

Juventus had the better of the play early on. Randal Kolo Muani came close, dinking over from close range. Kenan Yildiz also threatened, his swerving effort evading the post by inches. Jude Bellingham provided the first good look for Los Blancos, but saw his poke cleared off the line. Federico Valverde, too, made an impact with a 30-yard strike that forced a fine save out of the goalkeeper.

Los Blancos eventually took the lead in the second half – they were good value for it, too. Alexander-Arnold set it up with a fine cross into the area, which Garcia met dutifully. Arda Guler could have made it two after 70 minutes, but Michele Di Gregorio denied his fizzing volley following a lovely flowing Madrid move.

They lost their flow a bit after Mbappe came on. The Frenchman missed the entire group stage due to injury, and didn't quite jell with the rest of the Madrid attack in his return. Still, they did enough to run out deserved 1-0 winners. There will be tougher challenges to come, but it has been a good start to the Alonso era.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Thibaut Courtois (7/10):

Made a few good saves, came off his line effectively. A job well done, all said.

    Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Seems to be figuring out the dynamic of a back three a little bit.

    Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Allowed Randal Kolo Muani to run through a couple of times and some of his positioning wasn't great.

    Dean Huijsen (8/10):

Another excellent performance at the back. Won everything, distributed well.

    Midfield

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (6/10):

Grabbed his first assist in a Madrid shirt, but still a little suspect at the back.

    Federico Valverde (7/10):

Stung the keeper's palms with a strong effort. Had a couple more attempts denied. The driving force behind everything.

    Arda Guler (7/10):

A bit quiet in the first half, but much more effective after the break, and was part of the reason Madrid took control.

    Jude Bellingham (6/10):

Should have scored in the first half, and held onto the ball a bit too long in the second. Still finding his feet in this system.

    Fran Garcia (6/10):

Madrid were quieter down his side, but he still put in plenty of leg work.

    Attack

    Gonzalo Garcia (8/10):

Scored a really nice goal, ran tirelessly. Shame that this will be his last start now that Mbappe is back.

    Vinicius Jr (6/10):

A bit mixed, all said. Dangerous on the break, but lacked quality in front of goal.

    Subs & Manager

    Kylian Mbappe (5/10):

Drifted out to the left when he was really supposed to stay central. Will need time to figure out the right movements.

    Luka Modric (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Dani Ceballos (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Xabi Alonso (7/10):

Back to his preferred 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation, and things looked pretty good. Alexander-Arnold grabbed his first assist, and Madrid were in control. Encouraging all round – other than Mbappe's poor cameo.
