Player rotation, trying out fringe players on Hathurusingha's agenda before ODI World Cup

Mahmudullah, who has been rested for the first two Ireland ODIs, “is still in our plans”, says Bangladesh head coach

Mohammad Isam17-Mar-2023Chandika Hathurusingha wants to expand Bangladesh’s pool of players ahead of the ODI World Cup, to be played later in the year, but doesn’t want to do it at the cost of the ODI series against Ireland. He also stressed that it’s certainly not the end of the road for Mahmudullah, who has been rested for the first two ODIs against Ireland.Hathurusingha, who started his latest – second – stint with Bangladesh with a 3-0 T20I series win over England last week, said that he wanted to give the fringe players – batters Yasir Ali, Towhid Hridoy and Rony Talukdar, and bowlers Nasum Ahmed and Shoriful Islam – a chance to express themselves.”They can play with the freedom with which they play local cricket,” Hathurusingha said ahead of the first ODI of the series, which is not part of the ODI Super League. “We have seen what they can do in local tournaments, which is how we picked them. Their performance and ability to bat a certain way, their records against pace and spin… we are giving them the mental confidence so that they can do it in the international level. We are looking at who has that character to do the role in the international level.Related

“Regardless of winning or losing, I look at different things like character, how they handle situations in the middle, who stands up under pressure. Performance can go up and down. [Jos] Buttler is the best batter in the world in white-ball cricket, [but] we really put him under pressure [in the T20Is]. We were very happy with our attitude, body language and fielding. Even if we lost both series, if I see those things, I know that going forward, we are in the right direction.”Bangladesh’s next ODI series, also against Ireland, is part of the Super League, and they are also scheduled to play ODI series against Afghanistan and New Zealand, apart from the Asia Cup, before the World Cup in India in October-November.Is Mahmudullah in the mix for the ODI World Cup?Does Mahmudullah have a chance of featuring in those games? He has been rested, Hathurusingha pointed out, and didn’t want to be drawn into a discussion about Mahmudullah’s future.”I don’t think he is past his prime,” Hathurusingha said. “We are trying to expand our pool of players before the World Cup. In case something happens close to the World Cup, we want to have enough players that we have seen and can trust to do a role. We are rushed to do that as we have only 15 matches before the World Cup. We are trying to give opportunities to players we think can do the role. [Mahmudullah] Riyad is still in the mix.”Riyad has done enough. He has a lot of experience. We know what he can bring. We want some other players to get up to the mark at the international level. Not just skill-wise. It is about seeing whether they have the character to do the (role) at this level. It doesn’t mean that if that guy perform well, Mahmudullah is finished. He is still in our plans.”Hathurusingha expected the fast bowlers, who were so influential against England recently, to get some assistance in Sylhet, where the three Ireland ODIs would be played.”It looks like a good wicket to bat on,” Hathurusingha said. “There’s enough for the fast bowlers and spinners here too. I always rate our spinners. They are very tactically savvy and skillful. But this time my fast bowlers have come in leaps and bounds. I am very happy with that as well.”Beating England, though they were missing key players, in the T20I series was a big result for Bangladesh•AFP/Getty ImagesTaskin and Mustafizur will have their workloads managedHasan Mahmud was particularly impressive in the T20Is, standing out with the way he handled pressure at the death. In the first game, he conceded just five runs in two overs towards the end to stifle England. He didn’t take any wickets in the third game, but Hathurusingha said that his dismissal of Buttler in the second T20I was another crucial contribution.”The way [Mahmud] handled the pressure overs in the three ODIs was very impressive,” Hathurusingha said. “He opened the game for us in the second T20I by getting Buttler out. If I look at the game within the game, it allowed us to bring [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz into the game. The wicket brought all their left-handers. If Buttler was still there, it would have been a different kind of a game in the end.”The games within the game are very important. I am looking for people to stand up and do things. They get confidence out of doing these things regularly. Team get confident about their role and trust them to do things. Fizz’s [Mustafizur Rahman’s] two big overs changed the momentum in the third T20I.”Hathurusingha said that like the batting group, the fast bowlers – especially Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur – would also be rotated.”We want to manage him [Taskin], one of our strike bowlers. He is a world-class bowler. He bowled as quick as anyone in that series,” Hathurusingha said. “We want to manage him and Fizz. There’s a lot of cricket coming up. It will also allow us to give more game time to the other fast bowlers as well.”We are trying to expand our bowling unit. Taijul [Islam] is our No. 1 Test bowler. He bowled really well in the ODIs against England. We know he is ready. We wanted to give Nasum a go, to see how he goes. If he also does well, we have two guys ready leading up to the World Cup.”

'New dimension' – Martin Odegaard names the Arsenal summer transfer signing who's been 'really good' since his arrival in north London

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has singled out Martin Zubimendi for praise after the summer signing impressed him in pre-season and showed flashes of quality in his Premier League debut against Manchester United. The Norwegian believes the Spaniard can give the Gunners a 'new dimension' as he settles into English football after his move to the Emirates from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s early header. Zubimendi, making his debut, endured some early struggles under United’s press but grew into the game as it progressed. Despite a tough start, the Spaniard’s ability was evident and Odegaard was quick to highlight his qualities.

Speaking on the podcast, Odegaard said: “Yeah, he’s [Zubimendi] been really good in pre-season.

“And I’ve played a little bit with him before in Spain, you know, so I knew his qualities. A top player, as you say, he can find any pass, you know, he can break the lines, he can drive with the ball.

“He’s also so smart, you know, intelligent to read where the ball is going to land. And he picks up a lot of second balls. And yeah, he really controls the game. It’s going to give us a new dimension there. So yeah, excited for it.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zubimendi arrived in north London with high expectations after excelling at Real Sociedad and impressing for Spain. Arsenal paid a significant fee to land him as Mikel Arteta sought to strengthen midfield depth for another title push. While his debut had challenges, both the manager and team-mates are backing him to adapt quickly to the Gunners' tactical plans.

Jonathan Trott: Afghanistan batters have adapted to pace of ODIs

Head coach Jonathan Trott breaks down the reasons behind the change in Afghanistan’s batting approach

Ashish Pant02-Nov-2023Soaking up pressure and adapting their T20 skills to the pace of ODIs are the reasons for Afghanistan’s batting success at the World Cup, according to their head coach Jonathan Trott ahead of a crucial game against Netherlands in Lucknow.Coming into the tournament, Afghanistan’s middle order had the lowest average of all Full Member nations in ODIs since the start of 2021 – 26.44. That number has gone up to 36.93 in the World Cup, the fifth best in the tournament.Related

Afghanistan turn to careful cricket for unprecedented success

“I think it’s a case more of just being better all-around, and thinking more about your all-around game,” Trott said in Lucknow on Friday. “Afghanistan [players] naturally grow up playing a lot more T20 cricket than any other format, so the skills for T20 are there. It’s about adding to that sort of base of T20 skills. As you see, 50-over cricket is a long time and you have to be able to, I think, ride the sort of ebbs, and flows of a game.”While openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have been scoring consistently, it hasn’t gone bust when they have not fired. In their previous game against Sri Lanka, Gurbaz fell for a four-ball duck but Rahmat Shah stepped up and had half-century stands with Ibrahim and Hashmatullah Shahidi, who in turn put on 111 with Azmatullah Omarzai to finish the chase.”The thing I’m really happy about from the last game is we lost a wicket in the first over and Rahmat Shah was able to go into No. 3 and soak up that pressure but still kept scoring at a good tempo,” Trott said. “That shows the ability to soak up pressure at times, what you have to do in 50-over cricket, but also then accelerate at certain times.”Rahmat Shah has been unfazed even when Afghanistan have lost an early wicket•AFP/Getty ImagesTrott also stressed on the importance of the batters who are in to stay till the end and finish the job, especially while chasing.”I think when chasing those targets, we saw just what is possible if you have a good solid start and you have batsmen in the last ten overs,” he said. “That’s happened for us, but it’s also happened against us in games where it’s been difficult to stop the opposition with set batters in the last ten overs.”Having that sort of vision, knowing that you can score quickly towards the back end of games, I think that’s the pennies we’re starting to see drop with the players.”Afghanistan have managed to walk the talk, especially in their previous two games, against Pakistan and Sri Lanka where they chased down targets of 283 and 242 with ease.”Obviously, there’s a difference between talking about it and actually going out and doing it. And we’re seeing players go out and do it now,” Trott said. “We’ve spoken a lot about it and worked really hard to try and achieve it, so it’s nice to see the players do well and have a smile on the face when they’re there batting at the end of the game, having chased in the last two games and won.”

Dortmund are through to the Club World Cup knockout stages, but it didn't come easily as they barely survived in 4-3 win against heavy underdogs Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Sundowns were the more assertive side early on, and good value for their lead. Their opener came from a moment of individual brilliance. Lucas Ribeiro turned his man, accelerated through the midfield, and slotted past a stranded Gregor Kobel.

But Dortmund found their way back into a game – if only due to a number of Sundowns errors. Felix Nmecha finished into an empty net after a giveaway from the goalie. The second came in a similar fashion, a poor Sundowns pass leading to a well-constructed Dortmund move and easy header for a wide-open Serhou Guirassy at the far post.

The rest of the game was the Jobe Bellingham show. He scored his side's third on the stroke of half time after a nice piece of skill and angled shot. He then set up the decisive fourth on the hour mark. The Sundowns made a late push, grabbing two goals late, but Dortmund saw it out with relative ease to secure a crucial CWC win.

AdvertisementDID YOU KNOW?

Bellingham scored his first goal for Dortmund in his first start for the club. It was also the first goal of the calendar year for the 19-year-old, who secured a $34.6 million (€30 million) move from Sunderland earlier this month.

THE MVP

It took him a while to get going, but this was eventually Bellingham's game in his first start for the club. He was the best player on the pitch for most of the contest, and involved in the last two goals that ultimately killed the game off for Niko Kovac's side. The comparisons to his older brother won't stop, but the early signs suggest he can carve out his own legacy.

THE BIG LOSER

Ronwen Williams did a pretty good job of letting the Sundowns' early lead slip away. The veteran goalkeeper started the Dortmund comeback single-handedly with an errant pass into the feet of a grateful Nmecha. He made things worse soon after with a dangerous ball into the midfield that led to Dortmund's second. A few saves can't be discredited, but he made some decisive mistakes on the day.

Also on Dortmund's end, what is going with Gio Reyna? It makes no sense, at this point, why the attacking midfielder was selected for the CWC squad. Kovac suggested before the tournament that substitutions would be situational, and there may yet be a need for his inclusion. But through two games, there are few signs that the American has a role to play. If only there were another tournament he might have played in this summer…

Ange is fed up: Spurs now planning to sell £75k-p/w star alongside Bissouma

Tottenham Hotspur could now look to “get rid” of a midfielder this summer, as Ange Postecoglou is not happy with his options in the middle of the park, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Tottenham planning midfield revamp

There are signs Tottenham could be planning to revamp their midfield in the summer transfer window, having identified a number of potential targets, most recently making the first move to sign Sunderland’s Chris Rigg by submitting a £38m offer.

Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney is another name on Spurs’ shortlist, having recently entered the race for the 22-year-old midfielder, who could be brought in as a replacement for Yves Bissouma, with the Mali international’s future now in major doubt.

Plans to sell Bissouma in the summer are said to have been approved, with the 28-year-old playing a more sporadic role in the Premier League this season, often being limited to appearances as a substitute.

Everton are interested in signing the former Brighton man, with Tottenham now ready to sell, but he is not the only central midfielder who they could look to cash-in on this summer.

According to former scout Mick Brown, Postecoglou is unhappy with his options in the middle of the park, casting Rodrigo Bentancur’s future into doubt.

“Ange Postecoglou is not happy with his midfield options. It’s such a key area of the team, and the players at his disposal have not been good enough.

“They’ve failed to impress when called upon so far this season, and Bentancur now is not part of Tottenham’s plans moving forward.

“So if they can get rid of him and bring in a decent fee, it’s definitely something they’ll consider. I hear there are clubs in Europe who have been looking at a move in the summer.”

Bentancur impressing defensively

It has been a disappointing season all-round for Tottenham, and Bentancur hasn’t exactly stood out, with WhoScored ranking the midfielder 11th in terms of average rating in the Premier League.

That said, some of the Uruguayan’s defensive performances over the past year indicate he could be worth keeping hold of, ranking highly on some key metrics, when compared to his positional peers.

The 27-year-old has predominantly featured in a defensive midfield role this season, which may have hindered his ability to contribute going forward, having picked up just two goals and one assist in all competitions.

However, the £75k-per-week midfielder’s defensive contribution cannot be questioned, so it would feel a little harsh for Tottenham to sanction a departure this summer, but reports from February suggest Bentancur signing a new contract is also a possibility.

Problema do treinador, dirão.

E de fato, não se pode dizer que da posição ele não entenda. Mas evidente que a postura é a mesma de quando mais da metade do time perecia no departamento médico: cada jogo é um jogo, cada caso é um caso. Por hora, a prioridade é quinta.

– No futuro, vamos analisar jogo a jogo. Os dois são ótimos goleiros e trabalham bem com os pés. Sabem fazer funções importantes para o jogo. Eu espero que o Jandrei volte bem e acredito que existe possibilidade real de ele jogar na quinta-feira.

West Ham table £16.5m contract offer to sign "sensational" star for Potter

West Ham United have now tabled a huge contract offer to sign a “sensational” striker, who’s Graham Potter’s top target for the summer transfer window, but there may be competition for his signature from Barcelona, according to a report.

Hammers and Potter in need of a striker

Striker has been a problem position for West Ham for quite some time now, with high-profile signings such as Sebastien Haller and Gianluca Scamacca not working out, meaning Michail Antonio has often been called upon to lead the line.

With Antonio and Niclas Füllkrug out injured, however, Jarrod Bowen has been playing in a more central role as of late, but the 28-year-old usually operates on the wing, so the Hammers may want to bring in a forward more accustomed to playing at striker in the summer.

Danny Ings has struggled to get into the team, despite the injuries to his fellow strikers, with the Englishman scoring just one Premier League goal this season, which came way back in September, suggesting his best days may be behind him.

As such, Potter has now started identifying striker targets ahead of the summer, and Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri has revealed Jonathan David is right at the top of the list, after previous claims suggesting talks were held.

David is described as Potter’s priority target, and such is West Ham’s level of interest, they have now tabled a contract offer, which could amount to up to €20m (£16.5m).

There will be competition for the striker’s signature, with Barcelona also believed to be keen, and the player himself is said to desire a move to the Camp Nou, but the Spanish side are unable to match the Irons’ huge offer, given their financial issues.

David could be perfect for West Ham

The Hammers attempted to rectify their striker issues by signing Füllkrug in the summer, but the German could now be in the latter stages of his career, given that he is 32.

The former Werder Bremen man is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem, but even before his injury issues he was hardly setting the world alight, netting just two Premier League goals.

David, on the other hand, is only 25, and the Canadian has been in remarkable form this season, bagging 21 goals in all competitions, including six in the Champions League, indicating he could be capable of leading the line for the Hammers for years to come.

Understandably, the Lille star is keen on a move to Barca, but if West Ham are able to pull off a deal, there is every indication he could be a fantastic acquisition, having been lauded as “sensational” by members of the media, while maintaining an impressive goal record in Ligue 1 for a number of years.

No starts in 2025: Arsenal must unleash their "master of the dark arts"

The wheels may have fallen off in somewhat spectacular fashion on Saturday, but Arsenal need to get back up and dust themselves off ahead of this evening’s visit to Nottingham Forest.

The Tricky Trees might’ve lost their last two games, but they currently sit in third place and just six points off the Gunners in the Premier League.

Moreover, with Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur all dropping points at the City Ground this season, the visitors cannot go into the match feeling sorry for themselves.

To ensure that doesn’t happen and that his team can return to winning ways, Mikel Arteta must unleash the Gunners’ chief instigator from the first minute.

Arsenal's record vs Forest

Since their first meeting back in October 1904, when they were under the name Woolwich Arsenal, the Gunners have played Nottingham Forest 106 times across all competitions, winning 55, drawing 22 and losing 29.

Nottingham Forest'sBrennanJohnsonin action with Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli

Unsurprisingly, on top of their overall record against the Tricky Trees being rather excellent, the North Londoners’ form against them over their last five encounters has been even better, with four wins and just a single loss to their name.

Arteta’s side comfortably beat the Garibaldis home and away last season, and earlier this year at the Emirates, they put three past them to no reply, courtesy of goals from Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey and Ethan Nwaneri.

However, the Gunners tasted defeat at the City Ground in May 2023, when one goal from Taiwo Awoniyi put the final nail in their title challenge that season and saw Manchester City crowned champions.

So, the North Londoners will need to be on top form to make sure that doesn’t happen again and to give his side a better chance of doing so, Arteta must unleash one of his most consistent players from the start.

Chalkboard

The Arsenal star Arteta must unleash against Forest

The unfortunate reality is that, thanks to injuries, poor form and suspensions, there really aren’t too many changes that Arteta can make to his team ahead of tonight’s game that could potentially make them stronger, well, apart from one.

Ben White made his long-awaited return to the first team on Saturday afternoon after spending just over three months out of action due to a knee injury and then surgery, but due to the circumstances, he couldn’t make much of an impact on proceedings.

However, now we know he’s fit enough to play, the manager should put him in from the very start, as while Jurrien Timber has done very well in his absence, he needs his minutes managed, and the Englishman offers something a little different at full-back.

Primarily, the Poole-born monster is exceptional at overlapping with Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka off the right, and while the Hale End icon is out of action, the incredibly gifted Nwaneri plays in a similar enough way there – cutting inside – that it shouldn’t be a problem.

However, not only does the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace offer much more width to the team, he’s also the Gunners’ “master of the dark arts,” as described by journalist Charles Watts.

Now, while some purists might not consider that to be a good thing, it really, really is.

Last season alone, there were countless times that the versatile defender disrupted opposition defenders and goalkeepers during corners and, in turn, helped his teammates add to their already impressive record of scoring from set pieces.

Finally, the fact that he tends to maraud up and down the touchline in a way Timber does not means that the manager can make tactical changes throughout the game, which is something he’s not been able to do with his right-back options while the 27-year-old has been out of action.

Ultimately, White is a sensationally gifted full-back who can defend and attack as well as wind up opposition players to his team’s advantage, so if he’s fit enough, he should start tonight’s game.

Arsenal must rue selling amazing striker who's now similar to a £172m star

The incredible goalscorer would be perfect for Arsenal.
