Leverkusen make no secret of their pursuit of Chelsea winger

Bayern Leverkusen director of sport Rudi Voller has revealed the club are hoping to sign Chelsea’s Kevin De Bruyne in January, according to the Metro.

A host of Bundesliga clubs have been linked with the Chelsea winger, who is set to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge once the transfer window opens.

The Belgian has struggled to nail down a first team place under Jose Mourinho, and wants to join a club where he will get regular first team football ahead of the summers World Cup.

De Bruyne impressed in the Bundesliga last season whilst on loan at Werder Bremen, and hopes to make a return to Germany in January, and Bayern Leverkusen have made no secret of their desire to sign him.

‘We made no secret of our interest in Kevin De Bruyne right from last summer,’ Voller told Germany’s Sky Sport. ‘There are many clubs interested in him.

‘Regardless of our league position, we’re always looking for new players.

‘It’s possible that we do sign somebody this winter, but then again, we could go into the second half of the season with the same team and look to do something next summer.

‘If you do anything, then it’s got to be a top alternative to what we’ve already got here.’

Why is he not the first name on the Tottenham team sheet?

Things aren’t going exactly after plan for AVB at Tottenham at the moment, that’s putting it mildly. Despite heavy spending in the summer, Spurs are far from replacing Welsh wizard Gareth Bale. Right now, the north Londoners resemble a fish on land whose aquired brand new diving equipment. Bar a few encouraging performances from Christian Eriksen before he twisted his ankle on international duty and the odd glance of skill from Paulinho, their signings have contributed less than what Villas-Boas would expect when he and Daniel Levy frantically set about investing the Bale-money.

The win at Craven Cottage on Wednesday provides a pocket of breathing space, but only till they travel to the Stadium of Light this weekend. If they don’t perform against the team at very bottom of the league, even more critical questions will come in AVB’s direction. You can disagree with this, but the fact is a manager who is perceived to be under performing will always be put under heavy pressure in the Premier League. The unforgiving nature of the multimillion industry leaves no room for error.

My issue with AVB at the moment is not related to his disagreements with the press or his critique of the fans. I think Villas-Boas is perfectly entitled to voice his opinion on these matters, and besides, both topics are already receiving massive coverage. What I cannot get to grips with is why, when Tottenham are so blatantly lacking penetration, is the manager repeatedly leaving Mousa Dembélé on the bench?

The issue at White Hart Lane this season is to score goals. AVB’s inverted wingers are not getting along with Roberto Soldado, and whosoever deployed in the hole behind the Spaniard is giving him service Nando’s would shame themselves of. From what I’ve seen of Tottenham this season they are screaming for a bit of power in midfield.

I might have picked the wrong time to have a go at Sandro’s attacking contributions – that top corner strike against Man United on Wednesday was something else – but the Brazilian isn’t your average South American. Unlike his midfield partner Paulinho whose touch can be sweeter than Emma Watson, Sandro enjoy’s the rough side of the game. He used to wear a mouthguard, remember? Going forward, however, he lacks tenacity.

As for Paulinho, the little charmer, he has yet to give Spurs the penetration we expected. For me, Dembélé should be the first name on AVB’s team sheet. There are few players in the premiership who are as naturally strong on the ball as the Belgian. In all seriousness, I can’t remember ever seeing him give it away. He has the sort of presence and brawn you see in Yaya Toure when he’s at his best for Man City.

Even the stats back it up. Mousa Dembélé should be a no-brainer in the Tottenham midfield. Our stat crunching friends at Squawka.com have given him nearly a four times better overall performance score compared to Sandro, and by far the strongest in the Tottenham squad. In fact only Andros Townsend with his rise to stardom this season is anywhere near.

Furthermore, although Paulinho has significantly more minutes to his name, Dembélé outscores his counterpart on chances created – 16 to 14. Anyone who saw the then Fulham player tear Manchester United apart at the start of last season is bound to have fallen in love with the force of his strides when he descends on the opposition’s defence. As i said, I can think of few players in the world who provide the same kind of strength and composure.

In fact, should AVB decide to not go with Dembélé, I see no reason why Man United wouldn’t take him of his hands. A two way player who can apply himself in challenges as well as going forward is exactly what the Red Devils are looking for in January. This is of course only the opinion of a scarcely informed intern at a newly renovated online football site, but I can see no reason why David Moyes shouldn’t consider moving for the Belgian international, given he is available and willing to talk.

The two clubs might not have the best of histories together in terms of transfers, as deals have tendency to draw out into the insufferable, courtesy of businessman Daniel Levy and stubbornness embodied Sir Alex Ferguson, but should Dembélé at any point consider a transfer, I expect United to be monitoring the situation closely.

Again, I have little other to go by than what I see on the pitch and read in the papers, but that Mousa Dembélé is having to even go close to the benches at White Hart Lane is well and truly beyond me. I realize AVB is trying to build a new team, but I can’t understand why that team should be without one of the most composed players in the premiership.

Who knows, maybe somebody will put some pressure on the Portuguese manager in January by placing a bid, should he choose not to play Dembélé.

Will his gung-ho attitude at Liverpool come back to haunt him?

The ‘neutral’ would have loved it. A thrilling, end-to-end game with plenty of goals. Brendan Rodgers would have felt completely different about Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Swansea on the weekend. And what will be most troubling to him is that it’s a long-running theme of this season.

Liverpool have been outstanding going forward. Rodgers has found the right mix of pace, industry and finishing, with Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Coutinho able to contribute in the way of creativity.

But it’s at the back where Liverpool have been vulnerable, sometimes being caught out through the lack of a strong defensive presence in the midfield or a lack of quality in reserve when first-choice central-defensive options are unavailable.

This is what Rodgers has to work with until the summer. The club heavily pursued Yevhen Konoplyanka during the January window, going as far as to sending a representative to Ukraine to wrap up the deal. But the Ukrainian international is a wide player, one who would have made Liverpool’s already strong front line even more lethal, but would have offered very little defensively.

The obvious need for Liverpool was a defensive midfielder. Lucas Leiva was out through injury in January, and yet even with the Brazilian, the team were in need of a player who could effectively break up opposition play and protect the back four.

So what Liverpool have now is a game plan in which they will attempt to score more than the opponent, which they have done in many Premier League games, including those against teams currently in the top six.

What is less certain is time, in that this game plan may eventually run its course before the end of the season. It’s a risky strategy that relies on the fitness and availability of Rodgers’ first-choice attackers: Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez. It’s also one that assumes, or at least hopes, that Liverpool’s attack will continue to produce goals on a consistent basis over the next few months. Suarez may be doing a lot for the team, but he hasn’t scored in five games. Sturridge, scorer of two of Liverpool’s goals on the weekend, has already seen time off through injury, and backup forwards are simply not good enough.

Rodgers was clearly instructed his side to press the opposition in order to retrieve the ball as quickly as possible. They did so expertly in the win against Arsenal at Anfield. But a better opposition than Arsenal were that day would have been able to expose Liverpool’s clear weakness, that being the gap between defence and midfield through the lack of a defensive midfielder.

It’s a problem that has led to Liverpool’s inability to hold onto winning positions. It’s certainly the area that needs immediate address in the summer window.

How one selfless act could save Man United’s season

Just as it seemed the life-support machine was about to be switched off for Manchester United’s season, their eyes flickered, their finger twitched and their hearts began to beat again.

The comeback victory over Olympiakos in the Champions League has gone some distance to salvaging something from their shambolic season. Not a great distance. Maybe only inches, or centimetres. But a distance nonetheless.

As their European dreams remains alive, their hopes in the Premier League are dead and buried. The United late season charge has yet to materialise and the chances of them making the top four are just as likely as David Moyes building on the dynastic achievements of his predecessor. But if they are to build any kind of momentum heading into their Champions League quarter-finals then league form is going to be crucial. And there may be no better method than redeploying Wayne Rooney.

In a season that has been, in no small measure, a disgraceful disappointment for everyone who cares for United, Wayne Rooney’s form has stayed fairly consistent. After a defence-splitting pass provided Danny Welbeck with United’s third against West Brom two weeks back Rooney became the first Premier League player to record double-figures for both goals and assists for a fifth season. He’s been one of very few positives in a campaign where virtually all records broken have been ones that United wished may stand for a further few years.

Rooney admitted his dissatisfaction back in October at being asked to fill a midfield role last season:

“Everyone at the club knew that [in attack] is where I wanted to play and I think that’s why I was disappointed because I got told to play in midfield and I didn’t want to. But I’d always go in and try to help the team, so I think there had to come a point where for my own career I had to be a bit selfish, really.”

Sir Alex Ferguson left Moyes with a squad that had gaping holes. The reigning champions had been so light on genuine midfield quality two years ago that Paul Scholes was coaxed out of retirement. His addition added a brief rejuvenation, but something was still missing. His eye for a pass and his execution was as good as ever but his physicality, fitness and his nose for goal had waned from previous years.

Rooney has proven himself to be more than just a competent addition to United’s midfield; he’s exceptional at it. He has the ability to spray long balls that Scholes would be proud of and he is the closest United have to a player who can replicate the genius they lost with his ageing and final retirement.

The current crop lack the creativity and the drive to create from deeper positions (Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini). Ryan Giggs’ performance against Olympiakos demonstrated the qualities he still possesses, but at 40-years-old the physical capacity to recreate masterstrokes game after game is absent. These four players currently have a combined league total of two goals and zero assists to their name this season whilst creating just 40 chances. You don’t need telling that those figures simply aren’t good enough but, just so you’re aware, Jordan Henderson has scored three, assisted six and created 53 goalscoring chances. And that’s just one example.

Rooney would provide the physical and technical attributes needed to fill the gap for United while they see the season out whilst also allowing Moyes to get the most out of Juan Mata.

When Mata became available it seemed, to quote Kevin Bacon, a ‘no-brainer’. United were lacking creativity and his signature seemed as though it would go some way to solving this. But he’s currently being crowbarred into the side in order to fit in with Rooney and Robin van Persie. Mata lacks the physical prowess needed to play on the wing and doesn’t have the defensive nous you need from a modern-day winger. He doesn’t track back as tenaciously as you see someone like Antonio Valencia and he isn’t the type to cause too many nightmares for opposition full-backs.

The replacement options may not be up to the standard that Manchester United have had in the past (Adnan Januzaj permitting). Valencia seems to have regressed slightly from a couple of years back. Ashley Young is painfully hit-and-miss and Nani is, well I don’t actually know where Nani is right now. Maybe injured? Maybe watching videos of Cristiano Ronaldo in order to try harder at being a pale imitation of his Portuguese colleague? Anyway, I’ve transgressed. What I’m getting at is that, despite their deficiencies, these players are far more suited to filling a wide role than Juan Mata.

By deploying Wayne Rooney in a deep central position it would not only allow him more time on the ball, something which United will want and opponents won’t, it would also allow for Mata to fill the ‘no. 10’ role he excelled in during his two outstanding seasons at Stamford Bridge. Rooney would add physicality and his tenacity in midfield, whilst being able to distribute in a way that nobody else in United’s team can.

He’d also, most importantly, add a genuine goal threat. With their current quartet United don’t have that. Rooney wouldn’t be marked up in the way he is playing further forwards, allowing him to make late runs in a way that Frank Lampard has mastered throughout his career, and Scholes in his earlier years.

The position may not be ideal for him right now, and I’m not saying it’s a long-term solution, but United need to use what they’ve got at their disposal. And thankfully for David Moyes, he has Wayne Rooney. Ask him to bite the bullet just this once, save the season, and go from there. Any United resurgence needs to have everyone contributing, and Rooney in midfield would be a wise step to take.

Former Man United assistant predicting title challenge

Ex-Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan believes that his old side can reclaim their Premier League crown.

The Red Devils lost their status as English football’s top dogs last term, as the disastrous reign of David Moyes saw the Red Devils slip to seventh place from the summit.

Louis van Gaal has since been drafted in, and the experienced Dutchman has overseen an impressive pre-season in which they beat bitter rivals Liverpool in the International Champions Cup tournament in Miami.

With a couple of big money signings on board – Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera – there is much positivity around Old Trafford at the moment, and Phelan thinks that the club could make a shock bid for the title:

When asked by talkSPORT if van Gaal can win the league in his first campaign, he said: “I don’t see why not. Some people will probably scoff at that, but everybody is improving year on year.

“United did take a backward step a little bit, but it is well within their capabilities to surprise a lot of people and rise to the occasion. They look now as though they have got belief in themselves.

“Obviously pre-season is pre-season. They have got to come back now and get some consistency in the league but there will be excitement there.

“They have got, in Van Gaal, somebody with terrific experience and great motivation. Add that to the ingredients already at Old Trafford, in the supporters and the expectation. I’m sure they could be right up there.”

FIVE things Amalfitano could bring to West Ham’s new attacking style

After adopting an attritional, paint-drying brand of football over the last two years for the sake of Premier League survival, Sam Allardyce has been charged with the task of evolving West Ham’s style into something more commendable this season.

A major part of that process will be transfers, and according to recent speculation, the Hammers are eying a move for Marseille midfielder Morgan Amalfitano.

The Frenchman is a diminutive, tidy attacking midfielder and impressed last season on loan at West Brom. It’s alleged a fee has already agreed and reports last night claim Amalfitano is now ‘desperate’ to move to Upton Park.

So in honour of the 29 year-old’s expected arrival, here’s FIVE things Amalfitano will bring to West Ham’s new attacking style

OUTPUT

The biggest failing of West Ham’s attacking players last season was undoubtedly their limited output.

Kevin Nolan found an impressive seven goals and five assists from attacking midfield but that was by far the biggest contribution of any forward-thinking player on the Hammers roster.

As viewable below however, Morgan Amalfitano fared significantly better than the likes of Stewart Downing, Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis during his loan spell with West Brom last season:

Here’s a short clip of the midfielder’s net-finding exploits in Ligue 1:

//www.youtube.com/embed/bU2xL6ugx3c?rel=0

If the Frenchman can transition his consistent output to Upton Park, West Ham’s rather uninspiring average of 1.05 goals scored per match from last season should significantly improve.

Match-Winner

And through his ability to score goals, Morgan Amalfitano has the potential to be a real match winner for West Ham. The Irons could certainly do with a talismanic presence too, with the vast majority of their good results depending heavily on Sam Allardyce’s entrenched team ethic rather than moments of individual brilliance.

Last season, the 29 year-old netted this wonder goal to clinch West Brom a historic win against Manchester United at Old Trafford:

//www.youtube.com/embed/crAih_j1AU8?rel=0

He also bagged an audacious lob against relegation rivals Cardiff City:

And found the deciding goal in a 1-0 win over Norwich in April, which proved to be the final nail in Chris Hughton’s Carrow Road career.

Creativity and diversity

Likewise to output, the West Ham squad is suffering from a lack of natural creativity, especially with the future of attacking midfield prodigy Ravel Morrison remaining uncertain after his recent brush with the law.

But the anticipated arrival of Morgan Amalfitano should remedy that somewhat. As viewable below, despite the Baggies’ atrocious form last season the Marseille midfielder produced impressive attacking averages:

West Ham need a player who can unlock opposition defences without relying upon their more traditional ethos of route one football.

The 5 foot 10 Frenchman would be perfect for that role; he can operate in attacking or central midfield, and rather than being an old-fashioned English winger that constantly hugs the touchline, Amalfitano is a roaming playmaker who often cuts inside to open the whole pitch up.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO KEVIN NOLAN

Kevin Nolan remains as vital to West Ham’s successes as ever – his seven goals last term were the most of any player in the entire Irons squad.

But at 32 years of age, his scoring rate slowly-yet-surely decreasing and his legs inevitably beginning to fade, the Hammers captain can’t be expected to play all 38 games in the attacking midfield role next season. He’s also picked up some worrying disciplinary problems of late.

Sam Allardyce needs a viable alternative, especially amid the aformentioned drama surrounding Ravel Morrison at this moment in time, and he may well have found one in Morgan Amalfitano.

The Frenchman may not share Nolan’s determined spirit but he can score, create and is more than comfortable with the ball at his feet. During games in which the Hammers need to keep the ball, this service could prove vital.

That’s not to say West Ham fans should expect Kevin Nolan to be ousted by Amalfitano any time soon, but the 29 year-old’s arrival will allow the Irons skipper to share the burdens of his intrinsic role.

Controversy?

Morgan Amalfitano was hardly perceived as the bad-boy of the Hawthorns during his season-long stay with West Bromwich Albion last year.

But the sustained tension surrounding his transfer situation this summer appears to have brought out the worst in him. According to reports from France, the 29 year-old spat at coach Marcelo Bielsa during a training session he was told not to attend last week.

This tackle on Manchester United youngster Adnan Januzaj last season wasn’t too friendly either:

//www.youtube.com/embed/LvvTja7hlTc?rel=0

So although the one-cap France midfielder appeared a rather pleasant personality during his stay with the Baggies, he does come with a dark side that could soon be exposed at Upton Park.

Newcastle or West Ham… where would Micah Richards fit best?

The thing that is most shocking is that we’re at this stage of the transfer window – a little over a week left before the deadline – and Micah Richards is still wandering the halls of the Etihad Stadium.

The defender’s future with Manchester City was confirmed well before the start of this summer’s window: the former England international has only made nine Premier League appearances over the last two years, and following the signings of Bacary Sagna and Eliaquim Mangala over the summer, Richards has little backing him to push for a return to the first team.

Like Jack Rodwell, who has moved on permanently to Sunderland, this summer was about starting a fresh for Richards – and he hasn’t been short of potential suitors, if reports are to be believed.

The latest clubs to be linked with a move for the versatile defender are West Ham and Newcastle, though Liverpool were previously mentioned, as well as Arsenal. Needless to say, someone of Richards’ experience in the Premier League would go a long way to helping both West Ham, who are light of numbers at the back, and Newcastle, who recently sold Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal.

What is most important is that Richards lands at a club willing to invest faith in him. After such a prolonged spell away from regular first-team football, there can be no guarantees. But Richards is far from Manuel Pellegrini’s thoughts at this time, and a bargain fee is likely to be attached to him ahead of a sale.

Having already signed Daryl Janmaat from Feyenoord to replace the departed Debuchy, Newcastle’s need for Richards won’t be as pressing as West Ham’s, however the former England international is more than capable of being a regular at centre-back.

Sam Allardyce doesn’t have that level of quality at right-back, having recently loaned Carl Jenkinson from Arsenal. Someone of the experience of Richards would be a boost to the Hammers’ back line, which produced plenty of positive displays last season. In addition, the rumours linking Winston Reid with a move to Arsenal would necessitate the signing of another centre-back.

West Ham may be wary of another injury prone addition, having suffered multiple times in the past and now most recently with Andy Carroll. But the club have already taken a hit on the fitness front, with James Tomkins and Jenkinson suffering hamstring injuries. Richards’ history may not be spotless, but if he can prove to have escaped the problems that played a hand in his decline at Manchester City, he’ll be a shrewd signing for Sam Allardyce.

The club are said to be in advanced negotiations with City, and ahead of Newcastle, West Ham would prove to be the best destination for a player desperately in need of a change of scenery and a restart to his flagging career.

Roma chief ‘angry’ with Man United & Chelsea transfer talk

Roma are not considering selling Kevin Strootman to Manchester United or Chelsea and president James Pallotta is “angry” with the rumours surrounding his star midfielder, according to general director Mauro Baldissoni.

The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since Louis van Gaal took over the Red Devils, while Jose Mourinho’s Blues have been aligned with the 24-year-old in recent days.

Strootman has been out of action with a serious knee injury for much of 2014 – he missed the World Cup – and has only just returned to first-team duties with Roma – who he signed for last year from PSV Eindhoven.

Even with his fitness still a worry, rumours have suggested that £30m+ offers will be considered by the Italian giants, but Baldissoni has revealed that this is not the case, and that the speculation is annoying for the club:

“Our (club) president (James Pallotta) has already spoken about this and he gets angry with the rumours that link him (Kevin) to Manchester United,” Baldissoni said to Italian radio station Radio Anch’Io Lo Sport: “Our policy is that of investing in players that have quality but have room for improvement.

“Kevin is a young player with experience, and we want to build our future with players like him.”

Roma were recently eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, which has led to talk that the financial hit may force them to sell players of Strootman’s value and quality.

But, Baldissoni is adamant that there is no truth to such suggestions thanks to their careful planning:

“We were cautious and we did not include the revenue of a possible progression to the last 16 of the Champions League on our books,

“Hence, we have no need to put our books in order. Everything is correct and we are in no need to sell.

“We will evaluate the market based on what the team needs from a technical standpoint because our first mission is that of winning games.”

The best way to enjoy the Capital One Cup semis?

Football and beer go like bangers and mash or steak and chips. Often the perfect football experience is accompanied by a pint, or any other measurement you deem fit, of the good stuff, whether that be in the pub before the game or from the comfort of your very own living room. And the good people over at Sportingbeer have thought up a new and exciting way to mix your football and beer experience which may well add a new dimension to the whole event. Take the current Capital One Cup for example, the guys have put together this little box of joy…

So what is it?

For too long, sport (and football in particular) has been associated with large continental lagers which offer little character. Due to the recent rise in craft beer production in the UK, there are now over 1,000 breweries, found in all corners of the country. Sportingbeer aims to pair these great beers with their nearest football clubs to be enjoyed by supports as they watch their team play.

Sportingbeer are set to launch is a subscription pack for the Premier League season. For every Premier League game your team plays, you’ll receive two beers through the post (delivered in four quarterly boxes to your home or work). One will be brewed in a brewery near your club (sometimes a stone’s throw away); one will be brewed in a brewery close to your opponents that day. By drinking beers brewed locally to your club and your opponents club, you’ll be supporting British breweries instead of lining the pockets of huge brewing companies.

As well as delivering you some storming brews to drink, getting a Sportingbeer subscription will also allow you to rate the beers, using scorecards. Your ratings will be used to shape a league table of beers; at the end of the season, the 3 lowest-scoring beers will be relegated and the highest-scoring beer will be crowned champion. With one lucky subscriber winning a case of the beer for free!

Sounds good, right? We think so, and if you’re interested head over to their website to get involved or give them a follow on Twitter @sportingbeer_.
