Life at Southampton under Russell Martin has started excellently.
The Saints are unbeaten in the Championship season, winning three, drawing once, and scoring ten.
However, Martin is still seeking improvement and reinforcements. After Saturday’s 2-1 victory over QPR, he said:
“We were too slow in the first half and not enough willingness to run.
"We started the second half not very well but I enjoyed the last half-hour. We are winning while learning and winning while building.
"If you'd have said 10 points from 12 with all the nonsense going on and all the noise then I'm really pleased with that."
The coach isn't completely satisfied and is now looking to add another midfielder to his collection.
What’s the latest Southampton transfer news?
According to the Sky Sports Transfer Centre [29th August, 18:45pm], Southampton are one of several clubs who are interested in signing Celtic’s Matt O’Riley this summer.
The 22-year-old maestro has previously attracted the attention of Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City whilst playing for MK Dons, but now Southampton and fellow Championship promotion-chasers Leeds United are leading the charge for his signature.
With both clubs having recently suffered relegation, they will be targeting an instant return to the top flight, but the south-coast side may have the edge as Martin managed him back in 2021.
It remains to be seen exactly how much the Hounslow-born midfielder would command this late in the transfer window, though renowned Parkhead legend John Hartson once suggested earlier in the summer that he would be "very disappointed" to see him go for less than £18m, as he told Go Radio (via The Herald).
Would Matt O’Riley be a good signing for Southampton?
The midfielder has been at Celtic since January 2022 and has swiftly established himself as a highly productive asset.
In total, he has accumulated 76 appearances, scoring 10 goals and crafting 17 assists.
Martin has lauded the 6 foot 2 ace’s talent and threat, saying:
“He was good technically, two-footed, a brilliant finisher, and just a really intelligent footballer.
As well as this commendable goal-scoring, O’Riley has displayed that he is also an integral component of the defensive effort, ranking within the best 12% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for tackles per 90, interceptions per 90, and blocks per 90.
Matt O'Riley celebrates for Celtic
In last season’s Champions League, the Dane also demonstrated his accomplished nature, averaging 3.0 tackles per game, 1.8 interceptions per game, completing 50% of his dribbles, winning 50% of his duels, and managing 84% pass accuracy.
A player of this profile would help the St Mary's faithful quickly forget about James Ward-Prowse, who joined West Ham United earlier in the summer.
Irons manager David Moyes was overjoyed by the signing and said:
“He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season.
“His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he’ll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch.”
In just two appearances for West Ham so far this campaign, the Englishman has assisted twice, scored once, averaged four ball recoveries per game, and 2.5 interceptions per game.
However, given the evidence above, O’Riley also possesses this expertly well-rounded skill set, and his young age means he has a gloriously promising future ahead.
Therefore, he could be a phenomenal addition to Martin's squad, which will be looking for an instant promotion back to the top; a side that clearly has a large void to be filled in the engine room.
The ICC has laid out three charges against Rajan Nayar, including offering a player cash to improperly influence play in an international match
ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jan-2018Rajan Nayar, a Zimbabwe domestic cricket official, has been charged with breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code on three counts, including offering a player cash to improperly influence an international match. Nayar is the treasurer and marketing director of the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA), the association that runs league cricket in Harare and oversees domestic franchise the Mashonaland Eagles. He has been charged with breaching Article 2.1.1 of the ICC’s code (being party to an effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspects of an international match or matches) and offering a player US$30,000 for the same. Subsequently, he has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect from his roles at the HMCA.ESPNcricinfo understands that Nayar was the man who had approached Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer in October last year with an offer to engage in corrupt activities. When the Cremer news was reported, an ICC spokesperson had confirmed that an Anti-Corruption Unit investigation was “ongoing in Zimbabwe”.At the time, the Cremer incident was the second time in two months that news had emerged of a corrupt approach made to an international captain. Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, also reported an allegedly corrupt approach in October. Also, days later, senior Indian curator Pandurang Salgaoncar was dismissed by the BCCI for “malpractice” after a sting operation by a TV channel produced footage of him talking to reporters allegedly posing as bookies about the Pune pitch ahead of an ODI between India and New Zealand.Nayar is an official who is well known to players, a number of whom have expressed surprise that he has been implicated in such an investigation. He has 14 days, starting from 16 January, to respond to the charges.
The teams set to start the tri-series on Monday are Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but much of the focus at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday was on Chandika Hathurusingha who returned to Mirpur after his acrimonious exit as Bangladesh coach last year.In the Sri Lankan camp now, Hathurusingha was speaking publicly in Bangladesh for the first time since he quit as their coach and there were bound to be questions about that. In particular focus was his resignation which reportedly came in the middle of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa but was announced a month later by the BCB. The building excitement, however, gave way to one cool response after another.”I am excited to be back again in Bangladesh. I am looking forward to the series.””I think it is very challenging for us. Bangladesh has been really competitive at home lately.””Unfortunately, I am not going to go into details about my professional commitment or my dealings with BCB. So I can’t answer that.”Then came a minor slip-up, when he said “we” when referring to Bangladesh but quickly clarified which “we” he was talking about.”We haven’t lost a series, one series, in the last two and half years. When I say ‘we’, I mean Bangladesh. They have been playing good cricket in ODIs. They know their roles and game plan well. It is a big challenge for any team to play here,” Hathurusingha said.Only once his tone touched a higher note, when he was asked if it was irresponsible of him to quit in the middle of Bangladesh’s tour to South Africa. He said it wasn’t.Although Hathurusingha returned to Dhaka in December to tie up loose ends with the BCB, it is understood he did not submit a written report and board president Nazmul Hassan said that the coach’s decision to quit was prompted by the BCB allowing Shakib Al Hasan to rest during the South Africa Test series. The only time Hathurusingha spoke to the media during that tour was before the first Test, which prompted questions about his accountability to the Bangladesh fans who looked to him for answers after every thrashing on that winless tour. Hathurusingha remained steadfast with silence, only sending the BCB his resignation letter after the Test series, and not returning to Bangladesh for a debriefing.Ultimately, it was Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s ODI captain, who eased the situation by giving Hathurusingha his due but at the same time pointing out how many of the players also did their jobs properly to bring Bangladesh the success.”Our dressing room has big-hearted players. On behalf of the Bangladesh players, I salute Hathurusingha,” Mashrafe said on Sunday. “We had success under him. I have no problem in giving him credit but the player did the job in the 22 yards.”The coach didn’t have to do anything special to Tamim, Mushfiqur, Shakib or Mustafizur. They did it themselves, and ultimately took on the pressure. When Mahmudullah made that hundred against New Zealand, I didn’t think anyone had to guide him through that innings. He performed according to his ability.”We backed the coach 100%, and we will keep backing the current coaching staff – Richard Halsall (interim coach), Sujon (Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the technical director). They are going to do the same, with full professionalism. But good luck to Hathu. We are more concerned about ourselves right now.”Some may expect Mashrafe’s statement to end all questions to and about Hathurusingha, but it is unlikely to be the case. The Bangladesh media is huge, and this is only the start of Sri Lanka’s tour.

Journalist Santi Aouna has shared an update on West Ham United and their transfer plans for Rennes winger Jeremy Doku this summer.
Who will West Ham sign?
Manager David Moyes, technical director Tim Steidten, sporting director Mark Noble and David Sullivan are aiming to be busy as we enter the final hurdle of this summer window.
So far, the Irons have secured just two major signings, coming in the form of midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Mexico international ace Edson Alvarez.
Commenting on the addition of Ward-Prowse, Moyes was left thrilled by West Ham's capture of the England international, who adds both quality and real set-piece threat for the east Londoners.
“I’m delighted to bring a player of James’ quality and experience to West Ham United,” Moyes said.
“He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season. His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he’ll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch.
“We’re excited to get him up and running, for what will be another busy season on both the domestic and European front.”

Next up, West Ham are thought to be chasing a possible replacement for star midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who is attracting real interest from last night's UEFA Super Cup winners Man City.
Also, following the collapsed transfer of Man United defender Harry Maguire, West Ham are chasing the addition of a top centre-back and have been linked with a fair few names.
The Irons could also make further additions in the attacking areas, with Rennes forward Doku coming as a major target for Moyes, Steidten and co.
That is according to Foot Mercato reporter Aouna, who wrote an update on X regarding West Ham and their pursuit of the Belgium international.
Indeed, it is believed Doku is a "priority" target in terms of the final third, with West Ham making a verbal offer to Rennse for his services.
Little else is said on the nature of this bid, or whether it's even been entertained, but it appears Moyes' side have moved for Doku in an attempt to reinforce Moyes' attacking options.
How good is Jeremy Doku?
Jeremy Doku Aston Villa
The 21-year-old made nearly 30 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes last term, scoring six goals and assisting two others, but it's his dribbling which comes as a major draw.
Doku averaged a very impressive 3.3 successful take-ons per 90 over the 2022/2023 campaign, which is the best return of any French top flight player last season, even above the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe (WhoScored).
The Belgium international, who has been called an "exciting" forward by members of the media, could reportedly cost at least £45 million if West Ham want to do a deal.
Mbappe, meanwhile, is one player to have heaped praise on Doku and his sky-high potential.
"Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is (Jérémy) Doku, at Rennes," said the World Cup winner in 2021.
"In 5 years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.
"In terms of an incredibly quick player, I would also put Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang."
Even the Under-19 side has bought into playing one-day cricket with absolute freedom as they gunned down a target of 197 with 24.5 overs to spare
ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jan-2018 ScorecardA ferocious partnership between Will Jacks (73 off 44) and his captain Harry Brook (59 off 48 balls) took England to an eight-wicket win in their Under-19 World Cup match in Queenstown. As eye-catching as the batting was, considering they put on 130 runs in only 88 balls, little could overshadow legspinner Luke Hollman’s performance, who picked up 3 for 41 in his 10 overs to ensure Namibia were restricted to a mere 196 for 6.Harry Brook bats for England Under-19s•Getty Images
This after Namibia had elected to bat and got off to a decent start, moving to 42 for 0 in 9.4 overs. Following opener Jurgen Linde’s dismissal, however, wickets fell regularly and Shaun Fouche’s 44 off 75 balls ended up being the most notable contribution. In reply, openers Savin Perera and Tom Banton stitched together 55 runs in 7.5 overs, until Namibia quick Gerhard Lottering (2 for 33) struck to dismiss them in successive overs, leaving England at 68 for 2. Brook and Jacks then came together for the third-wicket and completed the chase in with 24.5 overs to spare.
Newcastle United's transfer window was largely driven by the narrative of long-term strategy, with Eddie Howe's side making requisite moves to preserve the club's newfound prominence.
Indeed, following the lucrative PIF takeover and consequent appointment of Howe in the later stage of 2021, the Magpies swiftly rose from their lowly Premier League position, then utilised the new affluence as the framework for a successful season, defying expectations with a fourth-placed finish last term.
Now with Champions League football on the horizon, the outfit's future is one of immense promise, and despite a stuttering start to the present season, the St. James' Park side will be confident of further promise this year.
How much did Newcastle spend this summer?
Newcastle's squad has very much been reformed since the momentous club takeover, and after such solid work over the past 20 or so months, moves were made this summer to consolidate this new position of power.
Indeed, Sandro Tonali was signed from AC Milan for £55m to bolster the midfield, while the prolific Harvey Barnes was swiped from relegated Leicester City in a £39m deal; young dynamos Tino Livramento (£32m) and Lewis Hall (£28m obligation) were both signed for large fees to bolster the backline, with the aces playing left and right back respectively.
These signings have not quite had the desired, instantaneous effect – even if Tonali and Barnes did both score on their debut during a 5-1 rout over Aston Villa in August – with the last three matches resulting in defeat against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes.
Anthony Gordon, a £45m acquisition from Everton in January, has started the season confidently and looks a fine replacement for the mercurial Allan Saint-Maximin, who left the club for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli in a £23m transfer this summer.
However, the true heir to that throne may lie outside English shores right now, with Magpies talent Yankuba Minteh thriving out on loan in the Netherlands.
Who is Yankuba Minteh?
Signed from Danish side Odense Boldklub in July for roughly £6m, the 19-year-old Gambian forward completed an instant loan move to Dutch champions Feyenoord this summer, with Howe's view that he will be integrated into the squad next season.
Praised for his "high potential" by Magpies sporting director Dan Ashworth, Minteh excelled in Denmark last season and posted four goals and six assists from 18 matches for his former outfit, heralded as a "special" talent by one Danish scout for his dynamism and electricity in attacking transition.
And now, in the early phase of the current campaign, the winger is already being lauded for his efforts in the Eredivisie, netting a delightful goal in Feyenoord's last match, artfully weaving around the keeper with a graceful gait before nonchalantly firing into an open net to cap off a convincing 5-1 victory over Utrecht.
Given his innate dribbling abilities and finesse on the ball, Minteh could indeed prove to be the perfect successor to Saint-Maximin's position in the Tyneside squad, replacing the fleet-footed Frenchman and perhaps even surpassing his quality at the club.
As per FBref, Minteh has averaged 9.23 progressive carries per game so far with Feyenoord, dazzling with his ball progression and destructive qualities in bringing the ball upfield.
This bears a semblance to Saint-Maximin, who currently ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries per 90 (7.29), by this measure, Minteh is on his way to becoming one of the most prolific ball-carriers in the game.
Once hailed a "wizard" by 90min's Graeme Bailey, Saint-Maximin was never the most consistent of goalscorers and only scored 13 goals for Newcastle across 124 appearances, and given Minteh's early promise and "magic" ability to rival the 26-year-old's – as claimed by Odense's chief executive Steffen Nielsen – the Gambian could surpass his performances.
Howe likely did the right thing in loaning him out this season, with Barnes and Gordon expected to get the majority of the match action on the wings, but neither boast the same intrinsic level of explosiveness, and Minteh could be a unique and frightening weapon once deployed on Premier League defences.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has received a major update in his pursuit of Aris Thessaloniki winger Luis Palma as speculation continues to rumble over his future, according to reports.
Is Luis Palma joining Celtic?
Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos has issued a major update on the future of Palma amid reports linking the 23-year-old with a move to Celtic, as he stated on X: "Not confirmed 100% yet, but seems Luis Palma will be out of Aris Thessaloniki squad for the match v Lamia on Sunday. Celtic and two non European clubs offers are on the table. Palma wants Celtic."
The journalist, who works for Greece-based outlet Sportime, has since dropped further insight on Palma's potential next career steps and has indicated that the Honduras international is now closing in on a switch to Parkhead, stating: "Celtic are really close to sign Luis Palma from Aris Thessaloniki. Agreement in principle between the clubs, €4,1m. plus some bonuses. Palma 's contract €650.000 per season, probably for a 4 years contract."
Palma has been a coveted presence this summer, attracting interest from the Hoops' city rivals Rangers, Anderlecht and Watford among others; however, he now looks set to link up with former Liverpool boss Rodgers in Glasgow following a whirlwind couple of days where swift negotiations between both parties now look to be veering toward their conclusion.
Of course, Celtic have been in the hunt this window to find a replacement for Portuguese winger Jota, who was sold to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad for £25 million earlier in the summer, as per Sky Sports.
Rodgers has already signed off on six signings since returning to Parkhead in the form of Gustaf Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki, Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio, Kwon Hyeok-kyu and Yang Hyun-jun, as per Transfermarkt.
In light of Palma's seemingly impending arrival, Celtic fringe man Sead Haksabanovic could find himself further down the pecking order at Parkhead and Football Insider claim that the Montenegro international is looking for an exit before the transfer deadline.
Is Luis Palma a good fit for Celtic?
Palma certainly fits the profile in terms of the style of recruitment Celtic have adopted this window, which has entailed bringing in young stars with potential with the aim of eventually selling them on in the future for a considerable profit.
His statistics also make for pleasant reading in his time at Aris, where he has notched 17 goals and 11 assists in 52 appearances for the Greek outfit encompassing all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.
Honduras forward Luis Palma.
The Honduran arriving at Celtic would also spell the end to a long, drawn-out search for another wide option at Parkhead. Wolverhampton Wanderers star Daniel Podence was considered according to reports; however, it always seemed unlikely that the Hoops would fork out anywhere near the funds needed to satisfy his mooted £12 million price tag.
Scotland international Ryan Fraser was also courted by Celtic, though he is on the verge of completing a season-long loan move to Sky Bet Championship side Southampton, as per The Daily Echo.
