Man Utd eyeing "outstanding" talent who currently has serious knee injury

Manchester United are now interested in signing an "outstanding" defender, who's also being targeted by Chelsea, according to reports from Spain.

What's the latest Man United transfer news?

Man United are clearly interested in a new midfielder ahead of the January transfer window, and scouts were sent to watch Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Oscar Gloukh during the international break, with the 19-year-old scoring for Israel against Romania.

In the same report, it is detailed that Scott McTominay is being targeted by German champions Bayern Munich, as a back-up option for Fulham's Joao Palhinha, so a replacement may be needed in January, and Erik ten Hag has his eye on another exciting youngster.

Arthur Vermeeren has now been named as a transfer target for the Red Devils, with Ten Hag said to be a big fan of the Royal Antwerp starlet, but midfield is not the only position the manager is looking to strengthen, as he is also keen to bolster his backline.

As reported by 90min, United used the international break to run the rule over some defensive targets, with Antonio Silva and Giorgio Scalvini being scouted, however there has now been an indication they could move for a more experienced centre-back.

According to reports from Spain (via Football Talk), Man United have now registered their interest in signing Jose Gimenez, but they are not the only Premier League club in the running for his signature, with Chelsea also being named as potential suitors.

There is a suggestion the Uruguayan could be available in the next transfer window, as Atletico Madrid are planning to cash-in, having grown frustrated with his consistent injury issues, which have seemingly not deterred Ten Hag.

As the 28-year-old has now entered the final two years of his contract with Atletico, the Spanish club are ready to let him leave in the coming months to ensure they make the most profit out of his departure, potentially opening the door for the Red Devils.

How good is Jose Gimenez?

The Atletico defender has been lauded for his "outstanding defensive talent" by members of the media, and he has been an important player for the La Liga side ever since making his breakthrough, going on to make 286 appearances for the club.

Over the past year, the 6 foot 2 centre-back ranks in the 86th percentile for clearances per 90, when compared to his positional peers, but he does not stand out on any other defensive metric, particularly struggling to win aerial duels.

Worryingly, the Uruguay international has struggled with injuries – especially over the past year, currently out for going on over 100 days with a knee problem – and Atletico's willingness to sanction his departure for that reason should be a red flag for Man United.

It is clear that Gimenez is a talented and physical player, who could go on to be a success at Old Trafford if he is able to put his injury problems behind him, but it would be a risk for Ten Hag to sign, and there will most likely be better, younger options available in January.

Gayle, Yuvraj worth the money 'even if they win two-three games' – Sehwag

The Kings XI Punjab mentor insists the two big-hitting batsmen are “big names and match winners”

Not many people would consider INR 2 crores (USD 308,000 approx) for two days’ good work a worthwhile investment but in T20 franchise cricket, that apparently is “a bargain.”One of the more bizarre sights at the IPL auction was a man with 10,000 runs going unsold until he came up for the draw a third time. It seemed like a sign that the Chris Gayle brand had taken a hit. Similarly, Yuvraj Singh was dealt a pay cut of INR 5 crores (USD 772,000 approx) from his 2017 contract. There were indications that both players – aged 38 and 36 respectively – were on the wane but Kings XI Punjab will be happy if they can win them even a handful of games in the new season which begins on April 7.The team’s director Virender Sehwag gave his resounding support to both Gayle and Yuvraj on Tuesday, saying “It is great that they have come to us at their base price (INR 2 crore for both). It is surely a bargain. Who knows if there were more bidders, they could have gone as high as USD 1 million. They are big names and match winners, even if they win two-three games for us, we would get the return on investment.”Gayle is currently with the West Indies, assisting their efforts to qualify for the World Cup. Last Tuesday, he struck his 23rd ODI century, a boundary-laden effort against UAE. And in December last year, he pummeled 146 not out off 69 balls in the final of the Bangladesh Premier League and proclaimed himself as the best batsman in history.Yuvraj has not played international cricket since June 2017, but he is eager to perform not only this season of the IPL but a couple more. He also has a deep connect with Kings XI, first being a Punjabi boy himself and second a former captain of the franchise. He now adds to a strong core of local talent.”Last few years, our Indian players were not that good, except Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel,” Sehwag said. “That was one gap. If you want to win the IPL, you have to have good Indian players. We have four to five of them this time. We were also struggling with Indian batting line-up, which could hold the innings together. Guys like [KL] Rahul, [Karun] Nair and Manoj Tiwary can hold the middle order. Then, we have explosive openers in Gayle and [Aaron] Finch, and down the order, we have David Miller. Hopefully, they will do well against spinners,”Sehwag reiterated his support to R Ashwin, who will lead Kings XI in 2018, saying “I have always felt that a bowler-captain can win you more games. If 8,10 or 15 runs are needed in the final over, only a bowler can you win that game. The way a bowler-captain thinks, he can also help other bowlers on the field. That is why I am a great fan of Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, who all made great captains.”

Leeds vs Sheffield Wednesday: Farke Holds Talks With Rutter

Arriving in January, Georginio Rutter didn't exactly enter Elland Road at an ideal time, with the Leeds United in the middle of what would prove to be an unsuccessful relegation battle, and managerial changes coming thick and fast.

Despite being just 21-years-old, the pressure was instantly on Rutter to hit the ground running, having made the move for a reported £36m. The general consensus around January signings is that they're brought in to play the role of game-changers, ideally luxury additions who arrive in a steady system and inject that extra bit of quality.

That is something that Rutter failed to do, partly due to his own form but also due to the circumstances, and he has since cut a frustrated figure, even struggling to make his mark in the Championship.

Following his most recent poor display, coming in a 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday, Daniel Farke has revealed he's been holding direct discussions with the striker about his mentality in front of goal.

What has Daniel Farke said?

Sometimes, all a player needs is an arm round their shoulder and a confidence boost, and Farke has seemingly recognised that. The Leeds manager revealed that he spoke to Rutter after the Sheffield Wednesday stalemate, saying, via Leeds Live: "I think what is (important) for him is that he's not injured, that he's fit, he comes into his rhythm and I think his performance was improved last weekend at Ipswich. He is actually in a really good shape.

“I was a striker as well; you can’t really explain. Sometimes you have times when you find it unbelievably difficult to use your chances to score, and sometimes you just have to look at the ball and the ball goes in anyhow. It feels a bit like Georginio is in this period.

“But I spoke to him and told him ‘listen, the solution is not to overthink things too much. When you have a situation, when you find it difficult to bring the ball in the back of the net, then don’t try to be too artificial in your approach’.”

The former Norwich City boss will now hope to see an improved performance from his forward after the international break, having held what could prove to be crucial talks with an arm round the shoulder.

How has Rutter performed this season?

georginio-rutter-leeds-united-pablo-hernandez-championship-marsch

In five Championship appearances so far this season, Rutter has managed just one goal, which came in Leeds' only league win of the season, against Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old would have been hoping to build on that goal against Sheffield Wednesday, but instead endured a performance to forget. As per Sofascore, Rutter actually lost the ball as many times as he completed a pass, with ten apiece, in what is the most worrying statistic of all, implying when he's not on the scoresheet he's also not providing much in the way of general play.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman also missed two big chances, and won just four out of 13 duels. The fact is, the numbers show that it wasn't just a day to forget for Rutter, it was a day in which his Leeds career was perfectly summed up.

There's still plenty of time for him to turn things around at Elland Road, and fans will hope Farke's careful approach with the youngster proves to be the right one.

Chelsea: Reece James future update

Chelsea defender Reece James has been a subject of interest for one of Europe's top clubs, and a report has now revealed whether he is likely to leave in the near future…

Which Chelsea players could leave in January?

Having spent over €1bn (£862m) in the three transfer windows since Todd Boehly took over the club, Chelsea may need to balance the books with some sales in the January transfer window, and there are several players who could be shown the exit door.

Tottenham Hotspur are planning a January swoop for Conor Gallagher's services, although the midfielder is currently happy at Stamford Bridge, and is planning to prove his worth to Mauricio Pochettino and secure a new deal, despite the signings of Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Lesley Ugochukwu.

The Blues accepted offers for Ian Maatsen and Trevoh Chalobah in the summer transfer window, and while the duo turned down moves elsewhere and plan to fight for their futures at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino's willingness to let them leave indicates they could still depart in January.

Bayern Munich are plotting a new approach for Chalobah, having held a strong interest in the summer transfer window, with Football Insider reporting the 24-year-old may find game time difficult to come by at Chelsea this season.

As reported by Football Insider, there have been fresh links touting James for a move to Real Madrid in recent days, with the Spanish giants said to be long-term admirers of the defender, but the Blues are desperate to keep hold of him.

Club chiefs are hoping the right-back can steer clear of his injury problems and become a key player under Pochettino, off the back of being named club captain earlier in the summer, and they are under no pressure to let him leave anytime soon.

The Englishman signed a fresh six-year contract last year, so he is committed to Chelsea for the long-term future, and the club should be in a strong negotiating position, if Real Madrid's interest materialises.

In the meantime, the 23-year-old remains sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in the draw against Liverpool on the opening day of the season.

When is Reece James back from injury?

Pochettino has confirmed the club captain is "recovering well", with the manager hopeful that he will play some part before the next international break in October, and his return could be a real boost for the Blues.

The England international could be a perfect fit in Pochettino's 3-4-2-1 system, which has been implemented in every game so far this season, given that he poses a real threat going forward, as highlighted by his performances in the 2021-22 season.

Chelsea'sReeceJamesin action

During that campaign, the "unreal" defender weighed in with five goals and nine assists in 26 Premier League appearances, averaging over one goal contribution every other game, showcasing his attacking talent.

Chelsea will be hoping that James can put his injury woes behind him after he recovers from his latest issue, but until then Malo Gusto is likely to remain the first-choice option, having made five appearances in all competitions this season.

Southampton: Hasenhuttl missed out on his own Modric

Southampton ended their 11-year stay in the Premier League at the end of last season as they were relegated back down to the Championship.

Their drop to the second tier of English football was a culmination of several years of poor recruitment as they failed to build a squad that was capable of comfortably avoiding relegation.

However, things could have been different if they were able to get some of the targets that they wanted and were unsuccessful in signing in the past.

One player who the Saints failed to get a deal over the line for back in 2019 was a talented young gem who could have been their own version of Real Madrid and Croatia superstar Luka Modric.

Were Southampton interested in Yari Verschaeren?

In September 2019, it was reported that the club were interested in signing Belgian youngster Yari Verschaeren from Anderlecht, who was valued at around $15m (£12m) at the time.

The outlet claimed that the then-Premier League outfit were preparing an offer to sign the promising talent. However, a move never materialised and he remained in his home country.

Anderlecht midfielder Yari Verschaeren

Ralph Hasenhuttl was the manager of the club at the time and was seemingly keen to bolster his squad by adding the exciting midfielder to his ranks, but chairman Les Reed was unable, or opted not, to secure a deal.

Verschaeren had made his debut for the Belgium national team earlier that month and was starting to establish himself as a key player for Anderlecht at senior level.

The attacking midfielder assisted one goal in seven U19 games for the Belgian club and went on to make his first-team breakthrough during the 2018/19 campaign.

Anderlecht midfielder Yari Verschaeren.

He produced one goal and four assists in ten Pro League games and then managed one strike in ten play-off matches at the end of the season.

The Saints target scored two goals and assisted one in 21 league outings for Anderlecht the following campaign as the English club showed interest in securing his services during that season.

What is Verschaeren doing now?

Since Southampton failed to snap him up during the 2019/20 term, Verschaeren has hit his stride at first-team level and been a consistently impressive performer in his home country over the last few years.

Earlier this year, Anderlecht head coach Brian Riemer lavished praise on the 22-year-old maestro as he described him as an "incredible" player who is "like Luka Modric".

This was supremely high praise from the Belgium international's manager as Luka Modric is a highly decorated midfielder who has been at the top of the game for many, many, years.

Croatia international Luka Modric.

At the age of 22, Verschaeren still has plenty of time to reach those heights and make a name for himself in a major European league. However, he has been catching the eye with his performances for Anderlecht in recent seasons.

The talented ace, who was once valued at £12m, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.91 across 36 Pro League outings throughout the 2021/22 campaign and contributed with seven goals and four assists from midfield.

He followed that up with an average Sofascore rating of 6.95 over 27 league matches last season for the Belgian giants, in which time he scored one goal and created seven 'big chances' for his teammates.

Meanwhile, only Mohammed Salisu (7.04) and James Ward-Prowse (7.23) averaged a higher Sofacore rating in the Premier League for the Saints last term. This suggests that the Hasenhuttl target could have been a top performer for the club if he was bale to translate his performances over to English football.

The Modric-like ace also produced excellent performances on the European stage. Varschaeren averaged an excellent Sofascore rating of 7.19 over ten Europa Conference League clashes as he chipped in with two goals and two assists to go along with 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game.

Yari Verschaeren's statistics over the last 365 days.

As you can see in the chart above, the Anderlecht star ranks highly among his positional peers in the Men's Next 14 Competitions when it comes to progressing the ball through carries and making an impact at the top end of the pitch.

He is similar to Modric, in that sense, as the Real Madrid star also excels in these statistics among players in his position across the Men's Big Five League and European competitions.

Luka Modric's statistics.

Their respective statistics over the last 365 days suggest that they are similar in style as they are both exceptional at carrying the ball forward for their teams from a central midfield position, whilst they also have the quality to impact matches with goals and assists when they get into advanced areas.

However, Verschaeren has a long way to go before he can come close to matching Modric's status within the game, as the Croatia international has a hefty trophy cabinet.

How many trophies has Modric won for Real Madrid?

The 38-year-old wizard, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2018, has racked up 23 trophies during his time with the Spanish giants, which includes five Champions League titles, to date.

He has also amassed 495 appearances and contributed with 37 goals and 77 assists from midfield, which means that he has averaged one goal contribution every 4.34 games.

Whereas, Verschaeren has scored 23 goals and assisted 21 in 154 matches for Anderlecht so far. This works out as a direct goal involvement once every 3.57 outings on average.

Both players have proven that they are able to chip in with goals and assists on a semi-regular basis to go alongside their progressive carrying skills in the middle of the park.

Therefore, Hasenhuttl, Reed, and Southampton had a nightmare with their failure to sign Verschaeren from Anderlecht in 2019 as he has developed into an outstanding young talent who is now earning himself comparisons to a legendary player in his position.

They could have benefitted from his ability on the pitch, as shown by his aforementioned performance levels in comparison to last season's squad at St. Mary's, in the short-term whilst also having a player with the potential to grow and improve further.

No room for error for RCB and Mumbai

Form guide (most recent match first)

Royal Challengers Bangalore: lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets, lost to Chennai Super Kings by five wickets, beat Delhi Daredevils by six wickets
Mumbai Indians: beat Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets, lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 31 runs, lost to Rajasthan Royals by three wickets

Big Picture

With two wins each in the first half of the season, there is little breathing room for either Royal Challengers Bangalore or Mumbai Indians in their last seven league games. Realistically, both will need to win six of those seven remaining games to have a shot at making the playoffs. That makes this head-on clash critical to the fortunes of both the teams.Mumbai won their last game while RCB lost theirs, but both gained positives from belatedly embracing change. Mumbai left out Kieron Pollard to rejig an underperforming middle order, while Royal Challengers included Tim Southee and strengthened what had till then been one of the worst bowling attacks in the competition. The Pollard exclusion hasn’t been fully tested yet, since Mumbai only lost two wickets in their chase against Chennai Super Kings, but their batting order – with Ben Cutting also slotting in, in place of Mustafizur Rahman – looked ominous, with serious hitting ability all the way down to No. 8.The Southee inclusion helped RCB gain some control against Kolkata Knight Riders’ top order in what Brendon McCullum felt were “probably the best ten overs we’ve had as a [bowling] group”. That it didn’t translate to a win shouldn’t dishearten RCB too much, as they attempt to take whatever positive energy they can muster into their last home game until May 17.

In the news

RCB’s stores of positive energy will be greatly enhanced if AB de Villiers, who missed their game on Sunday night with viral fever, has recovered enough to slot back into their line-up.

Previous meeting

Rohit Sharma’s 94 off 52 propelled Mumbai to 213 for 6. With wickets tumbling at the other end, Virat Kohli’s rather more pedestrian 92 off 62 ended up as an exercise to minimise Royal Challengers’ net-run-rate damage.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Likely XIs

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Virat Kohli (capt), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Manan Vohra, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Tim Southee, 8 M Ashwin, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Mohammed SirajMumbai Indians: 1 Suryakumar Yadav, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Rohit Sharma (capt), 4 Ishan Kishan (wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Ben Cutting, 9 Mitchell McClenaghan, 10 Mayank Markande, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

Strategy punt

RCB have been the worst bowling team in the death overs this season, conceding 13.19 runs per over and a boundary every 3.3 balls. Mumbai’s misfiring middle order has meant they are second from bottom among batting sides at the death, scoring only 8.33 runs per over while losing a wicket every 13.7 balls.Mumbai, however, have rejigged their middle order, with JP Duminy and Ben Cutting featuring in the starting XI in the side’s last game against Super Kings. Given how badly RCB have struggled as a bowling side, Mumbai could consider retaining the same line-up, which sacrificed a frontline bowler to gain batting depth, and give themselves the license to hit out from ball one. They could, however, bring back Mustafizur Rahman (against whom de Villiers has a T20 strike rate of 94.7) for Mitchell McClenaghan (v de Villiers, strike rate 191.2).

Stats that matter

  • Mumbai have won each of the last five meetings between the two sides, and have a 16-8 win-loss record against RCB overall.
  • Suryakumar Yadav has been involved in Mumbai’s highest partnership in six of their seven matches so far.
  • The second spinner has been one of the many problem areas for RCB this season. While Yuzvendra Chahal has been the team’s most economical bowler this season (7.92), the other spinners – M Ashwin, Washington Sundar and Pawan Negi – have combined to concede 9.70 per over while picking up seven wickets at an average of 37.43.
  • Since 2015, Rohit Sharma has averaged 44.9 and struck at 142.8 in matches Mumbai have won. In losses, the corresponding figures are 23.0 and 125.5, which tells you how much his team depends on his runs.
  • The M Chinnaswamy Stadium is no longer the fortress it used to be. Since the start of the 2017 season, RCB have won only three of their 11 matches here. Where the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad has been the venue most congenial to the home side in this period (Sunrisers Hyderabad have won nine out of 11 games there), the Chinnaswamy has been the second-worst, behind the SCA Stadium in Rajkot, where Gujarat Lions lost four out of their five games last year.

Fantasy pick

JP Duminy didn’t get to bat in Mumbai’s last game, but he remains a good fantasy selection given his record in Bengaluru: he has played four IPL games here and passed 40 three times, with a highest of 67 not out, all this while striking at 169.07.

Quotes

“He has been performing well at all positions, not only as an opener, but one down or two down. In the last game, he came up to No. 3. It was his responsibility. In the coming games, we’ll see more of it.”

Abell's intervention leaves Yorkshire with a tough task

Somerset’s young skipper just survived relegation in his first season in charge and his defiance at Taunton suggested he has no wish to repeat the experience

ECB Reporters Network29-Apr-2018
ScorecardTom Abell produced a captain’s innings to guide Somerset into a strong position on the third day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Yorkshire at Taunton. The 24-year-old skipper rescued his team from 24 for 4 in their second innings, making 82 off 137 balls, with 8 fours and a six, as they recovered to 200 all out. Ben Coad claimed 4 for 61 and Jack Brooks 3 for 44.That set Yorkshire a testing target of 321 to win on a pitch still offering assistance to the seamers. By the close of a day interrupted three times by bad light, the visitors had reached 49 for 1, with Adam Lyth unbeaten on 25, and trailed by 271.The day began with Somerset six without loss, leading by 126. They soon plunged into trouble as Coad and Brooks made good use of the new ball to pick up four cheap wickets between them.Coad had Marcus Trescothick caught at second slip and George Bartlett taken by wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd, while Brooks bowled Matt Renshaw and James Hildreth, both driving. With their lead only 144, Somerset needed a partnership. It was supplied by Abell and Steve Davies, who added 66 before Davies, on 33, edged Coad to first slip where Cheteshwar Pujara took the catch.Lewis Gregory got off the mark with a six over midwicket off Brooks and followed up with a four off the next delivery before Matthew Waite had him lbw playing no shot for 14.At lunch the scoreboard read 113 for six and Somerset had extended their advantage to 233. Craig Overton contributed a bright 18 before being bowled by a full, swinging delivery from Brooks to make it 129 for seven.Abell stood firm, playing an innings of sound technique and good judgement to reach his half-century off 103 balls, with 6 fours. Dom Bess (14) shared an important stand of 42 before driving at Waite and edging a catch to second slip.Yorkshire gave Abell two lives, Hodd dropping a touch chance off Coad when the Somerset captain was on 24 and Jack Leaning spilling a more straightforward catch at gully off Tim Bresnan with the batsman on 69.Abell hit a rare six, clipping Waite over backward square as Somerset’s lead passed the 300-mark. Josh Davey made a useful 11 before driving Bresnan to Gary Ballance and the innings ended when Abell was bowled by Coad, aiming a big shot.Yorkshire were 13 without loss when bad light brought an early tea. On the resumption they had doubled that score when Harry Brook, on 15, edged a drive off Davey to Trescothick at second slip.At 44 for one bad light intervened again and, although the players returned briefly while five more runs were added, the umpires soon took them off again. After 25 minutes of consultation, aided by a light meter, they abandoned play for the day.

Trott and Bell ensure no alarms for Warwickshire

Warwickshire wrapped up a comfortable victory at Edgbaston to strengthen their position at the top of Division Two

ECB Reporters Network06-May-2018
ScorecardWarwickshire strengthened their position at the top of the Specsavers County Championship Division Two table by completing an eight-wicket win over Derbyshire before lunch on the final day at Edgbaston.Requiring 89 for victory Warwickshire resumed on the last morning on 19 for one and Ian Bell set the tone for a comfortable closing out of victory by driving Duanne Olivier’s first ball sweetly through the covers for three. On a turning pitch, leg-spinner Matt Critchley was Derbyshire’s main hope of pulling off an unlikely win and he struck in his second over of the day when Dominic Sibley fell lbw.But that glimmer of hope for the visitors was effectively snuffed out in Critchley’s next over from which Jonathan Trott took ten runs, including two cover-driven fours, to take his team past 50.That flurry saw Critchley taken out of the attack and 17-year-old, Kandahar-born, England Under 19s off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri brought into the attack. Trott soon punched him to the long-off boundary and, fittingly, in the match during which he announced that he will retire at the end of the season, went on to see his team through to victory.Trott ended unbeaten on 35 (45 balls, seven fours) and Bell on 34 (53 balls, six fours).Warwickshire’s victory was built upon a solid display with the bat which saw them pass 400 on a wicket which required watchfulness and the excellence of Jeetan Patel and Henry Brookes with the ball. The pair shared 18 wickets (Patel’s match-figures ten for 170, Brookes’ eight for 119) to more than compensate for the loss from the attack of Ryan Sidebottom who suffered a side-strain while bowling in Derbyshire’s first innings.Derbyshire were left to reflect upon match which ultimately brought an emphatic defeat but in which they competed for long periods to suggest they are capable of sustaining their bright start to the season.
