Stuart Broad accepts pace rotation looms in hectic series

Five Tests in six weeks will put the pressure on quick bowlers from both sides and England have factored that in to their planning for the series

Broad accepts workloads may have to be managed

Stuart Broad is ready for the the possibility of England rotating their pace bowlers during the Test series against India, which involves five matches in six weeks.Broad, who has overcome an ankle injury to be ready for the series, is one of five pace options in the squad for the first Test at Edgbaston – including the uncapped Jamie Porter – and knows that the demands of the schedule will make it a challenge to be ever-present.His new-ball partner James Anderson will also come into the series having had to manage injury since the Pakistan series. Broad revealed there have already been discussions over the scenario where a quick is rested and how that would be dealt with.”I think there has already been small conversations saying about ‘don’t be disheartened if you are left out for a Test match’, it’s not a personal attack or dropping, it’s management of your bowlers to make sure we give ourselves the best chance,” Broad said.”I won’t get to the stage where I am left out at say, Lord’s, I’d go back and play county cricket, if you’re missing out, fresh bowlers come in, you stay around [the squad], keep talking, stay part of the unit so it’s only natural to expect small changes throughout five Test matches, but the bowlers have to be able to take it.”While the warm summer in the UK could lead to flat pitches and the potential for some back-breaking work for the seamers, there is also the chance of it working the other way if conditions demand that the spinners do a lot of the work. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali have been recalled to the England squad – the former’s comeback prompting much debate – and both are expected to feature this week.England’s pace pack

Current squad
James Anderson: England’s leading Test wicket-taker; has been nursing a shoulder injury

Stuart Broad: England’s second-leading Test wicket-taker; has battled an ankle injury
Sam Curran: 20-year-old left-arm allrounder; made debut v Pakistan
Jamie Porter: uncapped Essex seamer known for line and length
Ben Stokes: one of the world’s leading allrounders; will miss second Test due to his trial in Bristol
In the wings
Chris Woakes: injured v Pakistan, selectors felt he hasn’t yet had enough cricket
Mark Wood: has played two of the last three Tests but injured during recent Championship match
Jake Ball: remains on the fringes after tough tour of Australia
Craig Overton: has had a taste of Test cricket with middling results
Jamie Overton: Craig’s brother and has more pace; in good form

“If the pitches turn square and the spinners do a lot of the work, you might not bowl so much but come on when the ball starts to reverse swing,” Broad said. “So sometimes your workloads can be higher if green and nibbling, but if it turns the spinners will bowl 20-30 overs each before the new ball.””The positive is we haven’t had a huge amount of overs towards the end of June then July, so we’re going into a five Test series in just over six weeks really fresh. It’s going to be tough, we get a break in a series normally but the fixtures have fallen such that it’s going to be a physical challenge for the bowlers and we need to be fresh, fit..and I think we all will be.”As far as the first Test is concerned, Broad is confident that he will enter the contest at full fitness despite the recent ankle problem that flared up at the end of June. The injury stemmed from swelling that put pressure on his ligaments. He has had one Championship match, against Surrey, to prepare for India where he took 2 for 80 off 19 overs.”I was looking out for pain and swelling but there was none first innings and the overs leading in,” he said. “I had no pain after the game, I am going in 100% fit and you can’t say that too often so it’s an exciting place to be.”One of England’s key challenges with the ball will be getting past Virat Kohli, who will be desperate to correct one of the few anomalies on his CV: a Test average in England of 13.40 after a torrid time in the 2014 tour. But whereas on the subcontinent that may involve coming up with ‘funky’ plans to outwit the batsmen, Broad believes that traditional virtues could still hold sway despite the recent heatwave.”The history of Test cricket will suggest if you hold the top of off longer than anyone else you will have success, in England particularly it’s about owning the top of off,” he said. “Say you’re playing against someone like Graeme Smith, it’s very different technique, but I don’t think Kohli has a thing like that. Steve Smith you bowl different to a normal right-hander but Kohli is quite orthodox.”Your plans can be simpler and you just have to out-patience world class batsmen at both ends. As a bowling unit we will just have to make it as hard for all of their batsman but particularly a key player like Virat to score earlier and try and create pressure that way. We won’t have Headingley in June pitch, it will be attritional cricket where you hold for periods of time and try to speed the game up day three four and five.”

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly meets with Saudi Pro League transfer chief as Blues eye summer clearout to ease financial concerns

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly met with Michael Emenalo, Saudi Pro League’s director of football, ahead of an expected summer clearout in west London.

  • Blues expected to offload players in summer
  • Need to sell to comply with Premier League rules

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Boehly has recently taken in a trip to Saudi Arabia where he took time out to meet with Emenalo, according to the . The meeting comes amid speculation Chelsea must sanction £100 million ($128m) worth of player sales this summer to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. Chelsea offloaded a number of players to the Saudi Pro League last summer, waving goodbye to Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and N'Golo Kante.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Blues have already announced losses of £90.1m ($115m) in the 12-month period up to June 30, 2023 after spending heavily since Boehly arrived at the club. A summer clearout therefore looks increasingly likely in a bid to avoid sanctions for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules and to trim a bloated squad. Conor Gallagher has been linked with an exit, as he could bring a healthy profit as an academy graduate, while loanees such as Romelu Lukaku, Lewis Hall, Ian Maatsen, Armando Broja, and Trevoh Chalobah may all move on.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea have spent over £1 billion on players since Boehly bought the club in 2022. The club's record signing is midfielder Moises Caicedo who signed for £115m ($146m) from Brighton in August 2023.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea have endured a miserable campaign on the pitch so far under Mauricio Pochettino, despite the huge investment in the squad, but can take a major step towards a trophy on Saturday when they take on Leicester in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

Better than Jorgensen: Chelsea will regret letting "world-class" GK leave

Chelsea’s miserable form continues.

On Saturday evening, despite taking the lead inside ten minutes through Enzo Fernández, the Blues were beaten 2-1 at Villa Park, the late winner coming in the final minute of the 90.

This means Enzo Maresca’s side have now lost three consecutive Premier League away games, winning only two of their last ten league fixtures played anywhere, so now find themselves outside the Champions League places.

As the Blues’ woes rumble on, one rather important position epitomises their struggles.

Chelsea's goalkeeper issues

Saturday saw summer signing Filip Jorgensen start a third successive Premier League match in goal, although he won’t remember his trip to the Midlands fondly, letting Marco Asensio’s rather tame shot to squirm straight through him in the dying embers of the game.

Matt Law of the Telegraph labelled it a ‘howler’, Malik Ouzia of the Evening Standard described it as a ‘clanger [that] gifted Villa all three points’, while Maresa himself admitted he remains “always concerned” by Chelsea’s ongoing goalkeeper crisis.

That’s because, as noted by Chris Wilson of the Independent, this is not a new thing, stating that ‘Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes continue’.

Jorgensen is only donning the gloves because Robert Sanchez, who had started 21 of the first 23 Premier League matches this season, has been dropped following a string of high-profile errors.

The Spaniard was last seen in the league during the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, in which Sanchez ‘endured a terrible performance’ in the words of GOAL, mere days after, as noted by Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian, he’d ‘added to his growing list of mistakes’ during the home win over Wolves.

Prior to the 3-0 defeat at Brighton, Maresca confirmed Jorgensen is now his starting Premier League goalkeeper at the moment, with Sanchez therefore set to feature in Conference League matches, the Blues face København at Parken in the first leg of their last 16 on Thursday week, but given how the pair are performing, this hierarchy certainly is not set in stone.

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen

However, is Chelsea’s best goalkeeper, outperforming both Sánchez and Jörgensen, currently out on loan, a decision they’re surely living to regret as every week passes?

Chelsea's best goalkeeper is out on loan

As noted by Nizaar Kinsella of BBC Sport, Chelsea began the season with eight first-team goalkeepers on their books, before four of them, namely Gabriel Słonina, Eddie Beach, Kepa Arrizabalaga and, most notably, Đorđe Petrović, departed on loan.

Petrović joined Chelsea for a reported fee of £14m from the New England Revolution in August 2023, having been, as Tom Bogert of the Athletic put it, ‘the best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer’.

The stats certainly back up this claim; according to FBref, the Revs’ shot-stopper racked up the highest post-shot expected goals – goals allowed figure of any goalkeeper in MLS throughout the 2022 season, his figure of +13.1 at least three higher than the next-best on this list.

The Serbian arrived in West London to little fanfare but, by the end of last season, had established himself as Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice, starting all 23 Premier League fixtures from ten December onwards, as well as the EFL Cup Final defeat to Liverpool.

However, surplus to requirements this season, Tom Weber of Football Transfers believes he was deemed ‘not good enough with the ball at his feet’ to play in a Maresca team, he therefore joined Strasbourg on loan in August, the other club owned by Todd Boehly’s group BlueCo.

Well, under new manager Liam Rosenior, les Bleu et Blanc are enjoying an excellent season, knocking on the door of European qualification, as outlined by Nick Hartland of Get French Football News, while Raphaël Jucobin of the Guardian notes that the 40-year-old manager has made a ‘big impression’ in the Alsace, but he’s not the only one.

Rosenior has described his goalkeeper as “world-class”, so let’s see how Petrović compares to the two misfits Chelsea decided to keep instead.

As outlined in the table, it’s actually Jorgensen whose statistics are the best, very marginally in most cases, albeit these are surely inflated by the fact he’s played against minnows such as FC Noah, Astana and Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League, as well as both Barrow and Morecambe in domestic cups.

For Petrović, two statistics are most telling. First, his post-shot expected goals – goals allowed figure of +4.8 is exponentially higher than both of Chelsea’s current goalkeepers, while the Serbian ranks fourth in Ligue 1 for this metric this season.

Also, Petrović’s pass completion % figure of 79.9% is higher than Sanchez’s and only marginally lower than that of Jorgensen, dismissing the notion that he could not have played out from the back to Maresca’s required level, underlining that the Blues made a mistake forcing him to depart on loan.

Oito vitórias em 17 jogos: Díaz traça meta para livrar o Botafogo do rebaixamento no Brasileirão

MatériaMais Notícias

O Botafogo vive situação complicada no Campeonato Brasileiro.

> CONFIRA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Zero minutes for Gio Reyna! USMNT star will be drastically short of match fitness ahead of crunch CONCACAF Nations League showdown with Jamaica as he's left on Nottingham Forest bench yet again

Gio Reyna continues to be left out at Nottingham Forest as the U.S. men's national team star was glued to the bench once again in a draw with Luton.

Reyna benched yet againLess than a half of game time since joining clubForest settle for 1-1 drawGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

It was a vital match in the relegation race, with both teams needing every point they can get at this point in the season. It was Forest, though, that seized the advantage initially thanks to a goal from Chris Wood.

Forest's big moment came in the 34th minute. Played in by a cross from Morgan Gibbs-White, Wood was just able to get the outside of his boot to the ball, flicking it back across goal to give Forest a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Of the two teams, it was Forest that were closer to scoring that second goal of the game for most of the contest, with Luton surviving thanks to two goal-line clearances. Those clearances proved vital, too, as Luton scored a late equalizer to seal a share of the points.

The goal came from a corner kick in the 89th minute, and it helped Luton steal a result at home. Luke Berry was the goalscorer as Forest were unable to block his shot on goal as the two sides finished level at 1-1.

With the draw, Forest picked up a point that could have, and probably should have been three to help them through this relegation race. That one point puts them on 25 for the season, leaving them just three ahead of Luton, who occupy that last relegation spot with nine games remaining. Forest also have a potential Financial Fair Play sanction hanging over their head, with Monday's verdict having the potential to completely alter the course of the club's campaign.

GettyUSMNT IMPACT

Reyna's spell at Nottingham Forest continues to feel like a disaster, as the American once again failed to get the minutes needed to make this loan worthwhile. Reyna, to be fair, was nursing a knock heading into this game but, after returning to training in the build-up, the hope was that he'd get some sort of chance to contribute.

He's played less than one full half of soccer since joining the club in the winter transfer window. Reyna is getting less playing time than he was even getting at Dortmund, with the lack of minutes in Germany being the reason this loan was sanctioned to begin with. Reyna's inability to crack not just the Forest XI, but the Forest substitutes is a real concern heading into USMNT camp.

Reyna, of course, was called into that camp, with head coach Gregg Berhalter admitting he was concerned by Reyna's lack of gametime. Berhalter, though, says he has full belief in Reyna, who did have a strong 2023 with the national team despite his club issues.

Joining Reyna on the bench, of course, was Matt Turner, who remains Forest's backup goalkeeper for the time being.

Reyna will now join Turner in flying across the Atlantic for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League games. First up for the U.S. will be a semifinal clash with Jamaica, with the winner advancing to a final against Panama or Mexico and the loser playing one of those sides in the third-place game.

Newcastle could fill Tonali void by unleashing 17y/o with "plenty of potential"

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has become embroiled in gambling controversy this month. After a string of betting breaches during his time at former club, AC Milan, the Italian was banned for up to ten months – leaving his fledgling Magpies career in free fall.

However, while the 23-year-old – who joined in the summer on a five-year contract until 2028 for a whopping £55 million – looks ahead to time on the sidelines, one academy youngster may have the chance to embark on further progress since his own arrival at the club on Deadline Day.

Travis Hernes – the latest name amidst Newcastle's youth influx

Within an era of new Saudi ownership, it'd be easy for Newcastle to simply cherry-pick the best Europe has to offer and try to fast-track their space with football's elite. However, although a slither of that could be said for Tonali's high-profile move (which saw him become the most expensive Italian transfer ever), a lot of Eddie Howe's dealings have been made with the long-term future firmly in mind.

Take the loan of Chelsea's Lewis Hall – his is a move that reflects a young peripheral Blues player moving with an option to buy to the club he's actually supported since childhood. There's a slick planning there.

Factor in Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol and Gambian high-flyer Yankuba Minteh – two players that are bearing fruit on loans at Volendam and Feyenoord, respectively – and there's some serious talent in the pipeline.

Another name perhaps lost in the cluster of youngsters flying through the St James' Park doors, is Travis Hernes.

At just 17 years old, this midfielder of mixed Norwegian-English origins could have national teams fighting for his allegiance after making the impressive jump from League One Shrewsbury Town to Premier League Newcastle's youth side this September.

Hernes ready to build off Football League foundations

For Norwegian-born Hernes, this recent ascent has been emphatic, yet the youngster looks to constantly improve rather than be a mere flash in the pan.

At Shrewsbury, Hernes only featured in six senior games before attracting higher-level suitors. Three of those came in the EFL Trophy where the youngster even got on the scoresheet. These efforts, as well as an EFL Cup appearance, found him entrusted with two brief League One opportunities at the start of 2023/24 – against Stevenage and Cheltenham.

Although there isn't much in the way of recorded statistics for the young man who arrived in England at age 13, Chronicle Live's report provides a great qualitative profile on the midfielder. Football writer Chris Knight spoke to Shrewsbury's academy manager Charlie Musselwhite:

"He's a very polite, grounded boy. He's someone who I'd say is very relaxed, at times reserved, but I wouldn't say shy. He's just a fairly laidback character. That being said, when it comes to work and football, he is very serious. Throughout his time last year when he turned full-time scholar, he was very hard-working whether that was in training sessions or doing extras."

Since moving to Tyneside, Hernes has also attracted praise from his new manager, U19 coach Ben Dawson. The future could be bright for the Norwegian if he keeps progressing in the same vein as he has done in tricky fixtures against AC Milan's youth for example:

“He’s been terrific. It’s all very new for him still. He’s still quite green after making that jump. He played in the Premier League Cup against Huddersfield and did really well. Totally different experience today. He’s going to take some time to settle in, but he's a player we really like, and we think he’s got plenty of potential."

With one goal under his belt in just two U18 Premier League appearances so far for the Tynesiders, a chance to impress at senior level may not be too far down the line, with the impending absence of Tonali potentially set to be the perfect opportunity for Howe to raid the academy set-up.

Arsenal: Arteta must unleash "unplayable" teen Wilshere heir

Arsenal boast a rich history of academy production, with their immense focus on ensuring both the success of the club's present and future a trait which has helped them stand out among others.

Almost always willing to offer a youngster their first-team chance had they earned it, they have therefore produced some of England's most talented players, with Bukayo Saka the starring modern-day example that continues to offer a glowing recommendation of Hale End.

In fact, transfer insider and world-renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano would seek to laud the Gunners' infrastructure which allows for such proficiency at academy level: "What a moment it was for Ethan Nwaneri and Arsenal this weekend! The 15-year-old made history by becoming the youngest-ever player in the Premier League, and it’s a testament to the Gunners’ academy.

bukayo-saka-arsenal-reiss-nelson-rest-efl-cup-brentford-arteta-edu-preview

"It’s pretty clear Arsenal are doing a fantastic job with young players. The academy is excellent, they’re very good in the scouting system but also in how they present their long-term project to players and their parents.

“It’s just the beginning – they have at least two or three talents ready to shine in the next months, but it will take some time and they prefer to keep names quiet as they don’t want to put too much expectation on these young kids."

Although Saka might be the current benchmark for a graduate to strive for, it would make more sense for Myles Lewis-Skelly, who is surely part of that group Romano hints at, to instead look up to Jack Wilshere.

How good was Jack Wilshere?

Having enjoyed a youth career littered with goals, accolades and outstanding performances, it was never bound to take long for the 31-year-old to emerge into the senior setup.

However, few could have predicted just how impressive he would prove to be at that level, taking to first-team football with complete ease before enjoying arguably the best night of his career in 2011 as he marshalled a prime Barcelona at just 19 years old, silencing Xavi and Andres Iniesta in the process.

Such consistent form up until 2013 drew widespread praise, with some of the world's finest talents rushing to laud the Englishman. Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger would first note: "I don’t think one player makes a team. In his position, he’s one of the best players there are.

"I would say that Jack Wilshere has very good movement, he’s very dynamic and has a good left foot. He’s got a real eye for the way he sees his players around him. I would say those are his main talents.”

Then, an opponent from the Barcelona side he dominated years before, Dani Alves, would even issue a plea for the Catalan giants to try and pry him from the Emirates: "He is a great player who we have met playing against Arsenal and without doubt he can reach the height of the players we have here at Barcelona like Xavi and Iniesta.

“He has a lot of quality and a great personality. If I was given the chance to choose, he is a player that I would sign for Barcelona."

However, despite all the potential encapsulated in his slight frame, it was that small demeanour that seemed to be his undoing, as his physical play style saw his body subjected to immense levels of physicality, which in the end it could not take. He would suffer numerous bone breaks and undergo multiple surgeries before seeing his career whimper out, retiring at the age of 30, a devastating talent stolen by injuries.

So, as the current U18s boss for Arsenal, he is now tasked with ushering in the next generation of stars for Mikel Arteta, the likes of which he hopes can fulfil the career that he saw snatched from him.

In Lewis-Skelly, he is certain to see one or two attributes that he will remember well, and could take particular interest in nurturing the teenager to help him reach the levels Wilshere once achieved.

Who is Myles Lewis-Skelly?

A neat and tidy general with the skillset to operate with an open field or in tight spaces, he glides across the turf contributing with goals and assists whilst remaining a solid asset at the base of the midfield.

Such a synopsis could be used to describe both Wilshere and his protegee, for whom the former has been effusive in his praise for the 17-year-old maestro.

Having branded him "unplayable" after his late strike helped them reach the FA Youth Cup final, the former West Ham United midfielder would then note: "We give him the tools he needs to develop, but you see certain moments that are not coachable. Certain players can’t do that, only certain players can but there’s much more that comes with it like how he lives".

myles-lewis-skelly-arsenal-charlie-patino-academy-transfer-ornstein

Such similarities were further emphasised by journalist Charles Watts, who would echo the sentiment of the 34-cap stalwart: "You know when you see a player and you think, ‘yeah, you’re just a little bit different’. That’s the kind of impression you get when you sit there and watch Lewis-Skelly.

“His close control, his ability to get himself out of tight situations, the way he runs with the ball. Just his presence on the pitch, he’s got something special. You can see why there’s so much excitement about him at Arsenal."

With everyone who watches Lewis-Skelly rushing to praise him, he unsurprisingly posts tangible figures to justify such widespread accolades. After all, following an outstanding last season where he scored two and assisted four across all competitions, he has started the new term in similarly blistering form, with three goal contributions across just four Premier League 2 appearances.

Already starring at an age group far above his station, the new task must be finding out whether he can translate that truly exceptional skillset to the senior level, seeking to emulate the meteoric rise his manager earned.

Wilshere would go on to play 197 games for the Gunners, and whilst never becoming the legend his talent suggested he might, an opportunity has arisen for him to help mould someone who can.

Lewis-Skelly has such striking similarities with his mentor, and having just signed his first professional contract, the sky truly is the limit for a young starlet who has just turned 17.
