Counties not to face sanctions if they fall under salary collar

Counties will face no sanctions if they fall under the salary collar – the minimum sum they are permitted to spend on player wages – in 2020, as the English game looks to protect jobs during the Covid-19 crisis.16 out of 18 counties have used the government’s job-retention scheme to furlough their playing staff, and the majority of overseas signings for this season have had their contracts cancelled or deferred.According to the terms of the County Partnership Agreement (CPA) signed between the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), the ECB and the first-class counties last year, counties should spend between £1.5-£2.5 million on player wages annually. Sanctions might have included reduced ECB incomes or points deductions, but none will be imposed if counties fall under the collar this year.ALSO READ: Hundred faces salary cuts and partial re-draft“We’ve relaxed the salary collar that was in [place] for the counties this year,” Daryl Mitchell, the PCA chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. “With the cuts that have gone on and the situation with overseas players, there would probably be teams that would fall under the collar, but there will be no punishment for that which enables counties to hopefully be able to keep players on their books with the savings they’ve made so far.”Nobody would have foreseen what has happened in any industry, let alone cricket. The CPA was put in place 12 months ago or so. With Covid, county finances and ECB finances are going to look completely different.”The CPA also introduced a new minimum wage of £27,500 for full-time professionals and new rookie contracts for young players aged 18-21. But, due to the impact of the pandemic, counties will be able to roll rookie contracts over to next year even if players are 22 by the time the season starts, and the PCA has discussed relaxing the minimum wage internally.”No county has actually mentioned that [the minimum wage] to us yet,” Mitchell said. “There’s not been any sort of approach to see what we can do around that, but it has been discussed internally and the reality is that our priority is to keep as many members as we can in jobs. It’s almost a fallow year with so little cricket – it will be a minimal amount compared to a full season, so rookies can stay on rookie contracts for an extra year where previously they wouldn’t have been allowed. There’s flexibility there.”As things stand, the PCA’s particular concern is about the 134 players whose contracts are up at the end of the season. Northamptonshire have already confirmed that they will not offer Rob Newton, the opening batsman, a new deal, and county directors of cricket have admitted that it will be harder than usual to keep players on the staff.Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket•Getty Images

Yorkshire, for example, have given players an indication as to whether they are likely to win new deals, and have committed to making a firm decision before the end of July, with Martyn Moxon, the director of cricket, admitting on Monday that “a number of decisions will be made on financial reasons and not cricketing ones”.”They’re the most vulnerable of our members at the moment,” Mitchell said. “In any given year we generally lose 40-50 players from the game through being released or retired. Inevitably, with the financial situation the game finds itself in, those numbers are going to be higher this year.”The PCA’s retirement fund has already been bolstered by the prize money pots from the County Championship and the Royal London Cup this year, while it is hoped that a change in dates in standard contracts – which now runs until November – will ensure those leaving the game have a smoother transition. There has been a slight increase in the number of players using the PCA’s mental health support network during lockdown – a slight drop-off at the start followed by a spike up – and players will be asked to opt into any cricket that is possible this year.Mitchell admitted that it would be difficult to avoid a situation whereby players in the final year of the contracts feel under pressure to opt in. “They obviously want to put themselves in the shop window to earn a new contract or get a move elsewhere, so they are difficult decisions,” he said. “But as long as the player has that choice and has the support and backing of the PCA and their club, it should make it a smoother process.”ALSO READ: Most counties built to last through Covid-19 crisis, says Surrey chiefMitchell said that he was “confident” some form of county cricket would be possible this year, with Worcestershire and Surrey resuming training on Monday after Lancashire did so last week. A final decision on dates and formats is expected to be taken on July 6 or 7.”I think 14 out of 18 counties, per my understanding, are very keen to play red-ball cricket, and then the other four would prefer to play one-day cricket,” Mitchell said. “From the players’ point of view, I think we’ve got individual players who are red or white-ball only, so some sort of mix would probably suit the majority.”The main dividing line at present is the increased cost of four-day cricket, and the uncertainty surrounding the availability of hotels.”There’s a split of preference, but I think the majority – if not all – the CEOs have said they will play,” Mitchell said. “I don’t think [anyone] will opt out as a team. The last thing you want is two or three sides deciding not to play and you have 70 pros on the side watching everyone else playing.”I don’t think that would be acceptable. We need all 18 counties to buy into whatever competitions we can for the last couple of months of the season.”

Aaron Finch thinking ahead to Australia's 2023 World Cup plans

The downtime hasn’t stopped Australia’s limited-overs captain looking at the challenges to come

Andrew McGlashan26-Jun-2020Despite the sport largely being shutdown since March, cricket has not been far from the mind of Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch as he thinks ahead to the 2023 one-day World Cup campaign in India as well as the two T20 World Cups that are scheduled to be played before then.It appears highly unlikely that the T20 World Cup set for this October and November in Australia will take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a range of options on the table as to when it could be moved to, from early next year to a 12-month delay to pushing it as far as 2022. Under the current schedule, India are due to host the 2021 T20 World Cup in the October-November of that year.As things stand the next 50-over men’s World Cup will take place in February and March of 2023 in India. Following Australia’s semi-final exit in last year’s tournament, when they turned their one-day form around significantly leading into the competition, there is already considerable thought going into how to prepare.ALSO READ: Australians who could have IPL-state cricket clash”I’m a cricket nuffy so you are always thinking about it, especially being captain and with what’s coming up with the T20 World Cup, whenever that might be, and there’s a couple of them and looking forward to the 2023 50-over World Cup in India,” Finch told RSN. “We are just in the processing of nutting out how we go about winning that, what we’ll need to do down the track to be successful in those three tournaments.”In the 50-over space it’s about working back from that 2023 World Cup and really getting a detailed plan of how we think we’ll have to win it, what’s the structure of the side we’ll need in India. Is it going to be two spinners, is it going to be an extra allrounder, and kind of work back from there.”Aaron Finch drives one through cover•Associated PressFinch, who has made clear his ambitions of still being part of Australia’s one-day squad for the next one-day World Cup, said it was important to start identifying new players who could be part of the side now so that they can be given enough game time ahead of the tournament. He suggested the selectors will be looking at around 25 names over the next couple of years being whittling it down to the final squad as the tournament approaches.”[We need to] nut out what resources we’ll need in terms of players. If there’s someone new we identify who could perhaps have a big impact, how many games can we get into them over the next two and a half years to make sure they have enough experience so in a high-pressure semi-final you aren’t going in hoping they’ll do well, you know they have the form and enough experience behind them to make sure they are comfortable with international level.”It’s either working out what the 15, or say 25 players now, what that looks like, does it match our game plan going forward, or do we pick the side the other way round with a game plan in mind and adapt it that way. It’s not rocket science, it’s going through data, a bit of gut instinct of what you feel will be the trends of one-day cricket. Will it be 400, or will it be that 320-mark with some wearing pitches in India and a couple of spinners in your side?”Since their World Cup exit against England, Australia have played seven ODIs with six of those away from home which included being beaten 3-0 in South Africa. They beat New Zealand behind closed doors at the SCG in mid-March before Covid-19 brought sport to a sudden halt. They could return to limited-overs action in September with talks continuing about heading to England for the ODI and T20I matches that were originally scheduled for July. In the 2020-21 home season they are currently scheduled to play two three-match ODI series against India and New Zealand in January.

£200k-a-week Man Utd ace who Gary Neville called "embarrassing" up for sale

Manchester United could part ways with yet another one of their stars this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to complete a massive overhaul of the club ahead of the new season.

Manchester United's European future unclear

A vital 3-2 win over Newcastle United has boosted Manchester United's hopes of finishing in a European football spot via the Premier League, with a place in next season's UEFA Conference League confirmed if they better the Magpies' result on the final day of the season.

Goals from young trio Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund ensured that Erik ten Hag's side picked up all three points against the Tyneside outfit, despite a late goal from Lewis Hall making the final moments perhaps more difficult than they could have been, and it also made sure that their European hopes remained.

Facing a potentially tricky trip to Brighton, they will be boosted by the fact that Newcastle also face an away game, against Thomas Frank's Brentford. The Red Devils need Newcastle to drop points to have any hope of leapfrogging them, with their -3 goal difference meaning that a win for both sides would retain the status quo.

There is also the chance that Manchester United are playing Europa League football next season, and leaving Newcastle without any European football, but that would require the Red Devils to lift the FA Cup in 9 days time, where they face Manchester City at Wembley.

No matter the outcome, there is likely to be major change this summer, and it has already been confirmed that Raphael Varane will leave the club as a free agent, with Anthony Martial almost certain to follow him out of the exit door. Now, another high-earner could be leaving.

Question marks over forward's future

That comes in the form of Antony, whose time at Manchester United has been nothing short of a disaster. The Brazilian, signed at the request of Ten Hag when he took over, arrived for £86m but has done nothing to justify that transfer fee. This season, he has picked up more yellow cards (6) than goals and assists combined (5) across all competitions, and has managed just a single goal and assist in the Premier League.

His £200,000 a week wages make him the seventh highest-paid player at the club (a table he will climb when Varane and Martial depart), and TalkSPORT claim that this hefty take-home could see him become a casualty of the new regime because United are "having to trim their wage bill for their planned rebuild".

The criticism of the Brazilian has been widespread across his stint at Manchester United, led by former United star Gary Neville, who dubbed him "absolutely ridiculous" and "embarrassing" during one Manchester derby after a swipe at Jeremy Doku.

The recent emergence of Diallo has only served to underline the disappointment that Antony has been at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils have now decided to cut their losses on the 24-year-old, it is reported.

Of course, this would involve finding a buyer for the Brazilian, while United would have to accept a massive loss on the initial transfer fee and Antony may also have to take a hefty wage cut, something that he may be reluctant to do given his contract at Old Trafford runs until 2027.

Fabrizio Romano teases Tottenham move for £56m defender after 2023 talks

Fabrizio Romano has refused to rule Tottenham out in the race for a £56 million defender this summer, coming after he was actually "in talks" to join last year.

Postecoglou admits Spurs could sign another centre-back

Ange Postecoglou, speaking to the press last month, admitted that his side could actually end up going for another centre-back when the window reopens.

Tottenham may have tabled a bid for £24m Kane replacement in recent days

Spurs are eager to bring in his successor.

While the Lilywhites are thought to be after a new striker and potential Harry Kane replacement, as well as Spurs targeting a new winger and centre-midfielder, it is believed another central defender is high on the agenda despite Radu Dragusin's arrival.

The Romanian arrived from Genoa for around £25 million in the January window, and has provided back-up to star defender Micky van de Ven at the heart of Postecoglou's defence. However, some believe van de Ven may well be used as a wildcard left-back option after Destiny Udogie's season-ending injury, so perhaps we could be seeing more of Dragusin in the final few games.

In any case, Postecoglou was forthright in admitting to Tottenham's desire to sign yet another new centre-half later this year: “If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, the Tottenham manager said.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Before Spurs completed a deal for van de Ven last summer, they were heavily linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, who supporters may well remember. The Burkina Faso international, now fresh off the back of a title-winning season at Leverkusen, was "in talks" to join Spurs last year according to Fabrizio Romano at the time.

Romano teases potential Spurs move for Tapsoba

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano has teased that Spurs could be back in the running for Tapsoba after scouts from England were sent to watch the "frightening" defender recently – rumoured to cost around £56 million.

“Scouts from three top clubs were in attendance to watch Edmond Tapsoba in yesterday’s [Mondays] game for Bayer Leverkusen away to Borussia Dortmund," said Romano.

"The centre-back looks like he could be one to watch for this summer as he’s attracting interest, though it’s still early in this story. Tottenham also showed an interest in Tapsoba in the past, but let’s see if they enter the running again."

Derby now eyeing move for £750k gem, but there’s already another offer in

Following promotion from League One, Derby County have turned their attention towards flexing their Championship muscles for the first time and potentially signing a future star.

Derby transfer news

The Rams sealed automatic promotion after a rollercoaster season in which a place in England's second tier wasn't always a guarantee. Promoted nonetheless, Paul Warne's task is to now keep Derby in the Championship to avoid returning directly back to square one in the next campaign. Preparing to avoid the drop, those at Pride Park have reportedly already turned their focus towards the summer transfer window.

With that said, the Rams are eyeing up a move to swoop in and land a future gem for Warne. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Derby are eyeing a move to sign Thierry Small from Charlton Athletic, who will reportedly trigger the one-year option in his contract so they can demand a fee if he leaves.

Warne must soon ditch Derby promotion star who earns more than Cashin

Derby County might look to offload this high earner ahead of entering back into the Championship.

ByKelan Sarson May 8, 2024

The 19-year-old left-back, who previously played for Everton, has a decision to make though, as Charlton have also tabled an improved three-year deal for him to sign.

To make the jump from League One to the Championship will certainly be tempting for a player who is yet to even reach the peak of his powers. It remains to be seen just how much Derby would have to pay to land Small, however, with his price tag only increasing if he signs a new deal at Charlton, though Transfermarkt value him at around £750,000 right now.

It would be a deal worth pursuing for the right price though, given that Small's arrival would hand Louie Sibley plenty of competition at left-wing-back or allow the 22-year-old to move back into his preferred midfield role in the Championship next season.

"Great" Small would unleash Sibley

Whilst Small has had his struggles in the early stages of his career, particularly at Everton and Southampton, he has since found his feet at Charlton to earn the interest of Derby. And now he could step up even more by completing a move to Pride Park and edging ever closer to a Premier League return. It's a move that would also crucially unleash Sibley.

Left playing in the wing-back role this season, Sibley deserves the chance to break into the Rams' midfield and become a key part of Warne's side in his favoured position, and Small's arrival would allow for that transition.

It won't be a simple move, however, given Charlton's reported offer on the table and the fact that manager Nathan Jones seems to be a fan after telling the Daily Echo: "What we won’t do is get rid of good players. We’ll protect good players – if Thierry falls into that then Thierry will be looked after.

“I’ve been really pleased (with his impact so far). Obviously, I know Thierry from Southampton. He had a bit of a tough time – a big-money move as a teenager when he came to Southampton.

"Sometimes you have a little bit of a plateau before you can go again. We hope that is it for Thierry. He is a great kid – a fantastic athlete. He needs some polishing around the edges – but so do most teenagers."

West Ham now express interest to sign "excellent" 6ft 3in gem this summer

Whilst there are still plenty of questions as to just who may be in charge at West Ham United next season, the Hammers are seemingly wasting no time in the transfer market, having made their first move in an attempt to sign a future star.

West Ham transfer news

As things stand, David Moyes is set to leave West Ham at the end of the current campaign, leaving the Hammers in search of a replacement. Of course, the former Manchester United boss could yet sign a new deal, but if that proves not to be the case, then names such as Graham Potter and Maurizio Sarri may continue to emerge as candidates to take charge at the London Stadium.

West Ham already have a "monstrous" Phillips upgrade out on loan

This Hammer may yet play a big part in east London.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 20, 2024

Whether it's Moyes, Potter or another option, however, West Ham will be looking to add some fresh faces in the summer transfer window. Already, the Hammers have been linked with stars such as Ivan Toney as well as Real Betis left-back Juan Miranda, with the former particularly capable of transforming the current side into a team ready to shock the Premier League's top six.

dominic-solanke-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion

Those players are for the here and now though. Those in London are still planning for the future on top of that, and it looks as if they've made contact for a deal. According to Football Transfers, West Ham have expressed their interest in Bobby Wales ahead of the summer transfer window alongside Burnley. A player in demand after earlier links with Ipswich Town as well, the 6ft 3in Kilmarnock youngster may have quite the decision to make this summer.

After such an impressive loan spell at Alloa Athletic this season, Wales has more than earned such interest and is on course to step into the top flight, be it in Scotland or England, sooner rather than later. If he chooses West Ham, then the forward could follow in the footsteps of true greats like Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.

"Excellent" Wales can realise potential at West Ham

With the possibility that the squad will have a new manager to impress this summer, Wales could be joining West Ham at the perfect time. That and the fact that Michail Antonio has shown signs of slowing down this season creates the perfect opportunity for a young striker to make their mark this summer. And that young striker could quite easily be Wales, whose ball striking was described as "excellent" by The Young Team – an X account based on scouting Scotland's future stars.

Still just 18 years old, Wales has his whole career ahead of him, making his first step into top-flight football one that should be made with caution, whether that's with Kilmarnock, West Ham, or elsewhere. The potential is certainly there, but Wales must still get his next move right.

Liverpool star who was on par with Elliott simply has to start under Slot

Liverpool put Tottenham Hotspur to the sword in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon but the emphatic performance came too late for the Premier League title.

The recent slump that has seen Crystal Palace and Everton defeat Liverpool has handed Arsenal and Manchester City a foothold in the title race that now appears insurmountable, with both of the Reds' rivals requiring just one win from their remaining fixtures to end Liverpool's paltry hopes.

Still, the free-flowing display against Spurs highlighted the quality of this Liverpool side and then some, with out-of-sorts Spurs brushed aside after a brilliant hour that had seen Liverpool take a four-goal lead.

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott scores

Naturally, it's never straightforward and defensive frailties were exposed when Richarlison and Heung-min Son halved the deficit in the closing stage, but it was too little too late and a top-three finish in Jurgen Klopp's final season is now confirmed.

But Klopp's legacy will live on, with so many talented players on the Anfield books. Incoming manager Arne Slot will have a mammoth task in succeeding Klopp this summer but with rising stars like Harvey Elliott in the squad, Liverpool are surely set for a lasting position of promise.

Harvey Elliott's performance vs Spurs

Last season, Elliott completed 46 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and proved himself a high-quality youngster, impressing despite his side's woes and being hailed for his "special" quality by Klopp.

This year, after sweeping changes to the midfield, he's played more of a bit-part role in the Premier League despite featuring prominently in cup competitions, but with displays such as the one against Tottenham, Slot is going to find it hard to offer the 21-year-old anything less than a starring role.

It was the definition of an all-encompassing creative display. Elliott was a constant source of supply for his teammates while also demonstrating an improvement in his defensive game, winning three of his four duels. Moreover, his 89% pass success rate bespeaks his technical poise and composure.

That's without even mentioning the stunning strike. Salah collects, head raised, goal in sight. Will he shoot? Probably. No. He's sent it to Elliott, the young gun collecting with coolness and surging across the edge of the box, skipping over Rodrigo Bentancur's lunging challenge with balletic grace. He's ready. Anfield's ready.

The curling strike from range sent Liverpool into rapture and confirmed Elliott's masterful performance at a time of great need. Teammates stared on in awe; Ange Postecoglou looked away and shook his head. When it rains, it pours.

As per FBref, the diminutive ace ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 18% for blocks per 90.

He's shaping into a rounded player with a range of ways to inflict damage on his adversaries. Elliott will play a prominent part in the new era at Anfield.

Harvey Elliott celebrates at Anfield

He's not the only one to have not been an unwavering presence in the starting line-up in the Premier League however, with Cody Gakpo firing his way into form recently.

Cody Gakpo's performance vs Spurs

Gakpo, like Elliott, has been in and out of the starting line-up since completing an initial £37m transfer to Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, after enjoying a breakthrough performance at the 2022 World Cup with Netherlands.

Be that as it may, the 24-year-old has scored 15 goals and added six assists in all competitions this season, despite starting only 29 of his 51 appearances.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

Against Tottenham, he hit a goal and an assist apiece at centre-forward, nodding home Elliott's whipped delivery to make it 3-0 after curling his own cross over Lilywhites defenders to hand Mohamed Salah a much-needed goal after 16 minutes, opening the scoring.

He's not perfect, but the dynamic Gakpo has provided Liverpool with a steady goal threat this season despite his positionally nomaic role within Klopp's squad.

The Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle was delighted with the £120k-per-week forward's performance and handed him an 8/10 match rating, writing: 'Excellent both in terms of leading the line and bringing others into play, strong on the ball and provided inviting assist for opener, leading to the reward of heading in the third.'

As per Sofascore, Gakpo complemented his goal contributions with 44 touches, hitting the target twice, creating two key passes for his teammates, succeeding with one of two attempted dribbles, winning five of eight duels and chipping in with a tackle.

His interchanging movements with Luis Diaz were especially eye-catching, ensuring that the Tottenham backline was left questioning their hosts' plan of action, keeping many attacking dimensions open, accessible.

With Darwin Nunez benched for the third time in four Premier League matches following poor form, Gakpo has an excellent opportunity to impress his compatriot Slot when he takes to the dugout next season.

How Cody Gakpo could fit in under Slot

Gakpo might just be taking this chance, having been one of Liverpool's most consistent and most influential performers over this recent drab run of results.

Perhaps a victim of his own versatility, the 6 foot 1 star has played four different positions over seven times each throughout the 2023/24 season and while he has been criticised, there are many facets to this sharp skill set that make him perfect for Slot's system.

Cody Gakpo scores for Liverpool

As per FBref, Gakpo ranks among the top 19% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 15% for progressive carries, the top 10% for successful take-ons and the top 2% for tackles per 90.

There are few centre-forwards capable of maintaining an impressive rate of scoring who offer such a diversified style of play, and Slot, who plays high-tempo, free-flowing attacking football, will need such a star.

Whether Liverpool decide to move for a new striker at this stage remains to be seen, but Gakpo has all the quality to succeed for years to come on Merseyside, and he might just win Slot over and play a prominent role over the coming campaigns.
