Chelsea among frontrunners for £25m talent who’d make Osimhen unplayable

Chelsea are starting to take shape under Enzo Maresca's tactical guidance, with the ongoing saga surrounding Conor Gallagher's future at Stamford Bridge an indication of where the club is headed.

Of course, Maresca's ball-playing identity was known from the start, with Harry Winks praising the Italian's "incredible" philosophy last season at Leicester City, saying "it’s all about building through the lines and controlling the game.”

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

Effectively, Gallagher is being pushed toward signing for Atletico Madrid after being told that he won't be a regular starter given stylistic differences.

The Blues are going to aim to sign several more players before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, and they are going to be tailored to the exciting new set-up.

Chelsea transfer news

According to Calcio Mercato over in Italy, Juventus are continuing to push versatile forward Federico Chiesa to the exit, with the Italian entering the final year of his contract and not expected to renew terms.

It's understood that Chiesa's agent has been drumming up interest in England in recent days, with Chelsea joined by Tottenham Hotspur in being among the frontrunners to complete a deal.

The Old Lady are hoping to field €30m (£25m) offers, which is an affordable fee for one of Serie A's most talented forwards, and given that he would slot right into Maresca's Stamford Bridge system.

Why Federico Chiesa would be perfect for Chelsea

Former Italy international Alessandro Pierini has described Chiesa as "world-class" in the past, with the talent playing an instrumental role in Italy's Euro 2020 triumph and enjoying distinctive success in his homeland.

Federico Chiesa in Italy training

The 25-year-old has, however, been stifled by some rotten luck on the injury front, starting only 17 times across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 league campaigns due to an anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

He'd risen to the fore beforehand but has only recently started to show the kind of style that left fans in awe way back when, with the £153k-per-week sensation completing a full campaign for the first time in several years with Juventus and scoring ten goals across 37 appearances in all competitions before starring for Italy at Euro 2024, proving to be one of the standout performers in a disappointing tournament.

With such impressive technical quality enhancing the cohesion and flow of his team, Chiesa would be a wonderful addition to Chelsea's first team, ranking among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for passes attempted, the top 16% for progressive passes and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Should he sign, it would be interesting to see how Maresca opts to deploy the silky-smooth star, but his powers on the pitch would likely be perfect for another top target in Victor Osimhen, who may yet move to west London this month.

Imagine Chiesa & Victor Osimhen

Osimhen has been one of the best centre-forwards in Europe over recent seasons, with last year being marred by fitness troubles and Napoli's staggering decline but his exploits previously have emphasised his brilliance in the final third.

Osimhen strikes home. He's invariably effective in front of goal and has even been dubbed "one of the best strikers in the world" by Joao Cancelo.

While he endured a tough season last year, the Nigeria international still managed to bag 17 goals from only 27 starts across all competitions, but his efforts the previous year en route to the Scudetto have earned him the mark of one of Europe's elite.

As the clip above highlights, the 25-year-old is endowed with slick, fleet-footed skills with the ball at his feet, capable of utilising his sinew-corded frame to resounding effect, holding off defenders and deftly placing the ball into his teammates' path to strike on goal.

After all, during the 2022/23 Serie A season, he might have posted 26 goals from 30 starts but he also averaged 1.1 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, notching four assists besides.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

He'd simply be a monster alongside Chiesa, with the Juventus star's ability as a "wizard" with the ball – as noted by football media personality Roger Bennett – setting him up to be a dreamy signing for the Blues, who need to build on the togetherness that had hatched toward the end of last year and ensure that the coherent, ball-focused brand is instilled effectively.

Chiesa's ceaseless creativity, stemming from his driven surges up the flanks. and his sharp decision-making when placed in think-fast situations could lead to an air of structure and understanding at Stamford Bridge that has been missing for several years now.

The Italian whiz's faculty for playmaking is top-notch, providing strikers such as Osimhen with the kind of service to unlock and sustain their goalscoring prowess.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Osimhen is a deadly marksman but he also offers an impressive technique himself, capable of contributing effectively to the build-up play and team advances on the opponent's goal.

It might just be a match made in heaven, and Chelsea must now act swiftly to get the deals done.

Chelsea have already struck gold on star who's worth way more than Chiesa

He could make the club a hefty profit in the coming weeks…

Jofra Archer goes wicketless on low-key return to the day job for Sussex seconds

England fast bowler bowls 11 overs without luck, as he tests his elbow after injury issues

Andrew Miller05-May-2021Jofra Archer produced a cautious but increasingly rhythmic day’s work on his return to bowling after his recent injury issues, as Surrey’s reserves resisted his advances on a rain-affected second day of their 2nd XI County Championship clash with Sussex at Hove.By the close, Surrey had eased along to 215 for 3 in reply to Sussex’s 487, with Ryan Patel’s unbeaten 94 providing the backbone of their innings. Patel added 115 for the third wicket with Laurie Evans, who made 46, and a further unbeaten stand of 53 with Nico Reifer (32), and has a chance to press on to his hundred on day three after being dropped at slip in the penultimate over.As for Archer, he returned figures of 0 for 32 in 11 overs, spread across two spells of six and five overs respectively, as he shelved any quest for pyrotechnics and set about road-testing his troublesome right elbow, with the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s now just under a month away. His introduction came in a 25-minute burst with the new ball before lunch, after Surrey’s spinner Dan Moriarty had picked off Sussex’s last three wickets for the hard-earned figures of 4 for 122 in 38.3 overs. The home side’s mainstay was the 19-year-old Oliver Carter, who was last man out for a fine 160 – the first score of note of his professional career, and one which showcased an unflappable temperament and an excellent straight-lined technique, as he added a further 50 runs to his overnight 110.When his turn finally came, Archer might have picked up a wicket straightaway, as Surrey’s 19-year-old opener Ben Geddes – perhaps a little daunted by the reputation steaming in towards him – flinched his first ball airily off the pads and into a gap on the leg side. But he was more confidently forward for the remainder of an exploratory over, before picking off a brace of boundaries as Archer twice overpitched to ease along to 9 not out at the break.Jofra Archer continued his comeback from injury•Getty ImagesIt was left to Will Sheffield, Sussex’s young left-arm seamer, to upstage his senior partner in the wickets column, although he won’t be encouraging too many of his friends and family to seek out his efforts on the ECB live stream. His first ball after lunch was a pie to end all pies – a hip-high full toss, swinging invitingly down the leg side, but Geddes – with his guard down – could only look on in horror as he clipped the offering straight into the pocket of square leg.Sheffield’s second was an improvement but hardly a jaffa – an inviting outswinging half-volley that Will Jacks cuffed on the up to short cover. At which point Archer, commandeering a plumb position at first slip in his “Sharks” woolly hat, must have assumed it was not to be his day.Sure enough, Archer’s fortunes in his eighth over – the second of his new spell, after a 90-minute rain delay – rather summed things up. His first delivery, short and sitting up outside off, was clattered through mid-on by Patel to bring up the fifty stand. Two balls later, with Patel on 42, third slip couldn’t cling on to his right as Archer jammed the splice with one of his sharpest deliveries of the day.And before the over was out, he’d given away five penalty runs too, as the keeper allowed himself to be nutmegged by a length ball outside off, which then rolled into short leg’s helmet, perched behind him.And that was broadly the end of that as far as Archer’s day was concerned. Joe Pocklington entered the attack with his left-arm spin, as did Luke Benkenstein – son of Durham’s Championship-winning captain Dale – whom Reifer launched over deep midwicket shortly before Patel’s late let-off. There will be stiffer tests ahead for Archer, but at least he’s back on the park.

Breakthrough: Blackburn set to sign "fantastic" Premier League gem on loan

Blackburn Rovers are in "advanced talks" to complete the signing of a "fantastic" Premier League player on loan, and a deal is expected to be completed after a breakthrough this week.

Blackburn impress in Championship early on

John Eustace's side have made a flying start to their 2024/25 Championship season, picking up seven points from their opening three matches. Rovers opened their account with a 4-2 win at home to Derby County, generating plenty of early-season excitement among the fans, before drawing 2-2 at Norwich City and winning 2-1 at home to Oxford United last Saturday.

They also thumped Stockport County 6-1 away in the EFL Cup first round, so things appear to be going smoothly with Eustace at the helm.

Birmingham City's former manager John Eustace.

Losing star striker Sammie Szmodics to Ipswich Town was an undoubted blow for the Championship outfit, however, and further business is required to replace him in the coming days, prior to the summer window closing.

It looks as though Blackburn's attention could be on the addition of a new defender currently, however, following a fresh transfer update that has emerged.

Blackburn set to sign "fantastic" youngster on loan

According to journalist Elliott Jackson on X, Blackburn are in advanced talks to sign Liverpool left-back Owen Beck on loan this summer. James Pearce, a Liverpool reporter for The Athletic, has followed that up with more good news for Rovers fans, with a breakthrough now made as Beck is now "set to complete" a one-year move to Ewood Park.

Beck is an exciting young talent who could represent a brilliant addition to Eustace's squad in the current campaign, boosting their hopes of sealing a long-awaited return to the Premier League in the process.

Owen Beck in a press conference on international duty.

The 22-year-old is a highly-rated figure at Liverpool, with coach Barry Lewtas lauding his ability back in 2022, saying: "I thought Owen was fantastic. The progress he has made over his time at the Academy, but certainly the last couple of years, is a credit to him with the work he puts in [and] how coachable he is because he listens and takes on board the information we give him."

Such is Beck's ability, it is possible that he could even be viewed as a long-term successor to Andy Robertson at left-back at Liverpool, especially if Arne Slot promotes youth in the same way Jurgen Klopp, with the German allowing the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott to become key first-team players.

A year on loan at Blackburn has the potential to be ideal for all parties in the same way it was for Elliott, giving the Welshman an opportunity to pick up regular minutes in arguably one of the most competitive and challenging leagues in the world, prior to him returning to Anfield as a more mature player, having made three senior appearances for the Merseysiders to date.

Rovers may even hope that there is a possibility of signing him permanently next summer, however, should the Reds make him surplus to requirements, and if he shines at Ewood Park.

Newcastle now considering using the Guehi money on £100m+ Bruno successor

Newcastle United are now believed to be considering using the Marc Guehi money to sign a £100m-rated midfielder, according to a recent transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The summer transfer window may now be closed, meaning the Magpies can't make new signings until January, but that isn't stopping Paul Mitchell and Co from getting their ducks in a row for 2025, identifying targets after what many fans believed to be a disastrous summer window.

One such figure is Kevin Zenon, with Newcastle linked with a move for the Boca Juniors midfielder, considering him an exciting long-term prospect. They have even made an initial approach for the 23-year-old winger, whose left foot has been described as "magical".

Meanwhile, Barcelona winger Raphinha continues to be touted as a possible target for Newcastle in the coming transfer windows, as they look to snap up an upgrade to Miguel Almiron. The Brazilian has been linked with a switch to St James' Park numerous times in the past, and they are believed to be willing to match Barca's £52m valuation of him.

It is always important for Eddie Howe and Mitchell to be looking into the future and eyeing signings for the summer of 2025, and it looks as though one exciting player has been identified as an ambitious option.

Newcastle interested in "outstanding" midfielder

According to The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel, Newcastle are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton next summer, with Liverpool and Manchester City also mentioned as being in the mix. The Magpies of course have money in the coffers after failing with a near £70m deal for Wharton's teammate, Marc Guehi, whose position as Palace captain could now stifle a future move as well.

It has been claimed that the Eagles value the young midfielder at over £100m, and while Newcastle's interest is only thought to be "tentative", he would surely be viewed as a long-term successor to Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the park.

Wharton could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle in 2025, having enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, joining Palace in January and then being named in England's squad for Euro 2024. It would be a shrewd way to use the Guehi money if a deal for the centre-back is indeed dead in the water.

A gifted young midfielder with elegance to his game, the 20-year-old was lauded by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer earlier this year, who said of him after an eye-catching performance away to Liverpool.

In Wharton, Newcastle wouldn't only be signing a player who could mature into something great as the years pass, but they would also be getting a footballer who is ready to shine in the Premier League for them from the off, having proven himself at Palace.

Newcastle make first approach to sign "magical" new £15m star for Howe

The Magpies could already have their first signing of 2025 lined up.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 6, 2024

Granted, the lure of Liverpool and City acts as a real threat to the Magpies' chances of getting their man, but they should be willing to break the bank for him, having averaged 2.3 tackles per game in the league this season, as well as one key pass per match.

Late move: Liverpool could repeat Salah signing with "complete" £51m winger

Liverpool still haven't signed anyone this summer, and we're less than two weeks away from the transfer window slamming shut.

Alarm bells? While supporters are anxious about the situation, Liverpool bosses appear to be calm, with quality and depth across every area of Arne Slot's first-team squad.

And anyway, there is an internal quandary that requires Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes' full focus: the fact that Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah have all entered the final years of their contracts.

But if the right opportunity comes along, Liverpool will surely pounce, for Slot will need one or two fresh faces to help shape his vision…

Liverpool transfer news

As per transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are interested in completing a shock late move for Ademola Lookman this month, with the former Everton flop now valued at €60m (£51m) by Atalanta.

Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on signing the Nigeria international, whose hat-trick sank Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last season, so FSG will need to ramp up the gas if they are to win the race.

Why Liverpool are interested in Ademola Lookman

Liverpool might have something of an overload of left-sided wingers but Barcelona's interest in Luis Diaz persists, though Slot is adamant the Colombian is going nowhere. Still, there's time yet for a twist in the tale.

Lookman, to further the point, is not just a winger, having been moulded into a more central striker under Gian Piero Gasperini, reaping the rewards after plundering 17 goals and ten assists across all competitions, very much looking like the kind of dynamic option Liverpool could benefit from welcoming.

His monstrous performance in the Europa League final, dismantling Xabi Alonso's previously unbeatable German outfit, put his name on the map, but was indeed merely a continuation of performances across the campaign that led content creator Luke Taylor to marvel at the "extraordinary" nature of the success.

In the Italian top flight alone, he posted 11 goals and seven assists across just 22 starting appearances, also creating ten big chances and averaging 1.6 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game. This is a fine showcase of the full package that Lookman has become, with analyst Ben Mattinson even noting that he "has become a much more complete player" since his erstwhile days in England.

As per FBref, the 26-year-old ranks among the top 16% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 9% for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90.

This all comes together to paint a picture that would be certain to excite Reds supporters, should rumours of FSG's interest start to gain more steam. After all, there's the added bonus that he was sold by the Toffees to RB Leipzig for a £22.5m fee in 2019, after enjoying a short but successful stint on Merseyside.

Ademola Lookman for Atalanta

Clearly, he's an eclectic and multi-faceted kind of player who would dovetail right into Liverpool's system. The slick and interchangeable play that was on show during the second half of the Anfield side's victory over Ipswich Town in the Premier League opener last weekend highlighted as such.

FBref even highlights Cody Gakpo and Salah as comparable players, making a telling comment on Lookman's suitability, so now really is the time for him to make the move back to the Premier League – perhaps replicating Liverpool's Egyptian king in doing so.

Arne Slot's own Salah signing

Lookman is ready to return to the Premier League. The London-born ace might have succeeded at Everton but he has completed two loan spells in the division since first moving abroad and signing for Leipzig, with Fulham and Leicester City, scoring only 12 goals from 83 fixtures across the spells combined.

There are certainly similarities there. A 25-year-old Salah joined Liverpool from AS Roma in a £34m deal back in 2017 in a transfer that was met with indifference and perhaps even a bit of scorn by rival circles.

This was a player who had failed to make the grade with Chelsea, scoring just twice across 19 matches for the Blues and undergoing a series of loan spells before finding a home with Fiorentina in Italy – soon after moving to the capital.

luis-diaz-mohamed-salah-liverpool-opinion

This is now a player with widespread acclaim across the footballing world, accepted and adulated as one of the Premier League's finest-ever goalscorers, with 212 goals and 90 assists across 350 Liverpool matches.

He might have turned 32 in the summer but his goal-and-assist performance against the Tractor Boys was yet another illustration of his staggering level, with analyst Raj Chohan marvelling over the "world-class goalscorer" post-match.

His longevity is principally down to his elite athletic ability, keeping himself in superlative shape. Lookman would have a lot to learn if he wished to arrive at Anfield and succeed as Slot's own version of the esteemed Egyptian, but the tools for such success are certainly there.

Lookman is now at a stage of his career that has showcased his sustained potency in front of goal and shone a light on his level of dynamism.

Given that the Nigerian has sharpened his tools in recent years after previously failing to cement a starring role in England, he could indeed be the second coming for the Reds.

Liverpool can land "immense" £38m titan who'd be better than Branthwaite

This would be a statement signing from FSG…

Pakistan under pressure as Zimbabwe chase history in series decider

After their first T20I win against Pakistan, the hosts now chase their first-ever bilateral series win in the format

Danyal Rasool24-Apr-2021

Zimbabwe have never won a bilateral T20I series•Jekesai Njikizana/AFP/Getty Images

Big pictureIt was about time the chickens would come home to roost on Pakistan’s middle order, but the manner of that reckoning was so grave even those predicting it were taken aback. A first-ever T20I loss to Zimbabwe, and the fourth-lowest total defended against a Full Member saw Pakistan bowled out for 99 in a chase of 119, losing their last seven wickets for just 21 runs. The confidence shot it gives Zimbabwe cannot be overstated as, against all odds, they go into the third and final T20I with a real chance of springing upon Pakistan a chastening series defeat. There is, of course, room for improvement for both sides, especially with the bat. Zimbabwe restricted Pakistan thanks to a combination of a near-flawless performance with the ball, in the field and the total capitulation of the visitors. While stand-in captain Brendan Taylor will want a repeat performance in that respect from his side, Pakistan are unlikely to be that listless two games in a row. To counter that, Zimbabwe could work on the way they paced their own innings with the bat, putting little pressure on Pakistan, almost content to canter along to a sub-120 total. With Craig Ervine ruled out of the series and Sean Williams nursing a hand issue in for the last game, Zimbabwe lost plenty of experience, so the return of the latter might not be a surprise. Taylor did mention after the match that his side might have to approach the powerplay with a touch more positivity, setting the tempo for the remainder of the innings. The pitches here in Harare appear to have plenty in them for bowlers, with both captains agreeing totals around 140-150 were challenging. With Zimbabwe having felt they left runs out there, they go into the decider on equal terms.Pakistan, meanwhile, appear to be on that precipice from which they could lurch either to brilliance or chaos, with no way of predicting which it will be. They were given a nudge towards the latter after the second T20I with Shoaib Malik taking to Twitter to lambast “unacquainted decision makers”. What should have been a series to try out new players and fine-tune certain aspects of their game for the T20 World Cup has instead thrown up a decider of extreme pressure, giving this series a higher profile than most would have accorded it a few days ago.Form guideZimbabwe WLLLL(last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
Pakistan LWWWLIn the spotlightWesley Madhevere was by far the brightest spark of Zimbabwe’s tour of Pakistan a few months ago, but he hasn’t quite lit up this series just yet, particularly with the bat. There have been glimpses of his ability in these two games, but justice to his talent is yet to be done. His dismissal in the previous game was especially disappointing when he attempted a low-percentage reverse sweep and gave away his wicket while Zimbabwe desperately needed him to bat deep. His contribution with the ball, though, has been surprisingly impactful, conceding just 27 runs in five overs and taking two wickets across the two games.Mohammad Hafeez was believed to be a panacea of sorts for the middle order; unlike the rest, he was in excellent form in the lead up to Pakistan’s tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe. He missed South Africa’s T20I series in Pakistan because he was playing the T10 League in the UAE, where he excelled, and went on to distinguish himself with his performances in the PSL. However, that form has not turned into output at the international level in a beleaguered middle order, further amplifying Pakistan’s woes. He had a phenomenally successful 2020, barging his way back into Pakistan’s T20 World Cup plans, but if this barren run continues, he could find himself frozen out in double-quick time.Team newsIf Williams returns, he will add experience to the batting line-up, but it’s unlikely Zimbabwe will wish to make too many changes to the side that helped them win the second T20I.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, 2 Brendan Taylor (capt & wk), 3 Tadiwanashe Marumani, 4 Wesley Madhevere, 5 Regis Chakabva, 6 Ryan Burl, 7 Tarisai Musakanda, 8 Luke Jongwe, 9 Wellington Masakadza, 10 Blessing Muzarabani, 11 Richard NgaravaPakistan rested Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali for the last two games, but with the series on the line, it would not be a surprise to see them make an appearance.Pakistan (probable): 1 Babar Azam (capt), 2 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 3 Fakhar Zaman 4 Sharjeel Khan/Asif Ali 5 Danish Aziz 6 Mohammad Hafeez 7 Faheem Ashraf 8 Hasan Ali 9 Mohammad Hasnain/Haris Rauf 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi 11 Usman QadirPitch and conditionsThe weather is clear again, and with the boundaries as big as they are, a target around 150 should put the side batting first in a decent position. Both sides have fielded first upon winning the toss, but have ended up failing to chase down targets.Stats and trivia Zimbabwe have never won a bilateral T20I series (they did win a one-off T20I against West Indies in 2010). Williams is 64 away from 1000 runs in T20Is. Taylor is 86 short of the same milestone. For Zimbabwe, only Hamilton Masakadza (1662) has more T20I runs.

-O Flamengo manda no STJD. O Flamengo sempre resolve as coisas pagando.
