Kohli: Skillsets of Hasaranga and Chameera will be of huge help in UAE

“We feel stronger as the new additions have given us few other dimensions”

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli believes that the additions of Sri Lanka duo Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera, especially in the UAE conditions, will be a “huge help” for the team’s campaign in the second leg of IPL 2021.Kohli said that missing the likes of Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson should not have that big an impact on the team, considering they have roped in players who have a significant understanding of subcontinent conditions.”Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa who were with us in the first leg for a bit, were an integral part of the team, they made a decision not to play in the second leg for reasons which are absolutely understandable,” Kohli said during the unveiling of the team’s blue jersey on Saturday. “The replacements we have got for those guys are two players who know these conditions. The conditions in subcontinent this time of the year are pretty similar. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera are two guys who have played so much cricket for Sri Lanka and they understand how to play on pitches like these and their skillsets will be of huge help for us playing in Dubai. Understanding how hot and humid conditions can be and how the pitches will play out, they know everything.Related

“The guys coming in blend into the team culture and the plan of the team very well. The core group is also motivated. We haven’t focused at all on what we’ve missed out on but we feel stronger as the new additions have given us few other dimensions.”Legspinner Hasaranga could straightaway slot into Royal Challengers’ first XI – that’s the sort of impression he has made in recent times with his bowling smarts coming to the fore especially during Sri Lanka’s recent series against India. He has played 17 of his 25 T20Is in the subcontinent, and he also has numbers to show how impactful he has been in these conditions: 26 wickets at an outstanding average of 14.65 and an economy rate of 6.60. During the tour of England, he also showed off his batting skills, contributing some handy runs from the lower order.Seamer Chameera, who made a comeback into the Sri Lanka side in all three formats earlier this year after missing out on selection for two years, has also been among the wickets, particularly impressing in England in June and then against India at home. He has picked up 15 wickets in 12 matches at a 17.86 average and 6.51 economy rate since his return to the T20I side this year.Kohli, along with his India and Royal Challengers team-mate Mohammed Siraj, flew to the UAE from England following the postponement of the Manchester Test last week. He spent six days in mandatory quarantine, following which he joined the rest of the squad in the bubble for his first practice session on Friday. He found the team to be in great spirits during training despite meeting them after months.”After quarantine, I stepped out to practice yesterday for the first time,” Kohli said. “I did not feel that we went away at all. I felt like this is just an extension of where we left. The camaraderie was the same, there was excitement in the air, players understanding what they work hard for at the start of the IPL in the first leg. It was a high-intensity practice that we had and everyone was giving everything they had. I was very pleased to see that and very happy to finally be out of quarantine and get into the groove of the IPL.”Royal Challengers are currently third on the table, having won five out of the seven matches during the first leg. Kohli said that the team was keen on playing with the same kind of passion and commitment as they begin their second leg on September 20 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi, when they will be wearing blue jerseys to pay tribute to frontline workers.”We’ve had a great start to the campaign and that is our value factor and our motivating factor knowing that we can play a certain brand of cricket which we have shown in the first leg, with really strong and consistent performances and every player chipping in somewhere or the other, and people standing up and making impact performances for the team.”Having played this game for so long at this level we understand that whether you have seven wins in the row, you have to start the next game with the same passion and commitment. And if you have no wins in five games which we have experienced as a team, you still have to find motivation. You just cannot afford to take things for granted. The reason why we played that way was because we were not looking beyond the day that we were part of – we never looked at how many games are left, how many points we need to qualify. We did not focus on that at all. What we focused on was the culture of the team, enjoyment among the players.”

Former Tottenham team-mates Dier and Kane combined to great effect as the latter put Bayern 1-0 up with a smart turn and finish in the 15th minute. As a result, they became the first English duo to combine for a goal in the Bundesliga as the German giants extended their lead at the top of the table on Saturday. England captain Kane quipped he was surprised to see defender Dier so far up the pitch for his assist, while also praising the 31-year-old.

On Dier's assist for him, he said: "I'm not quite sure what he was doing in that position in the first place [laughs]. Me and Eric are really good friends and it's good to see him on the pitch; he's not played a lot this season but whenever he's come in he's done really well. Eric was rock solid again [against Freiburg]. I'm delighted for him that he picked up an assist and it was nice that it fell to me."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the Freiburg victory, Kane scored his first league goal from open play since November, Dier – who got a rare start in place of the injured Dayot Upamecano – impressed in the backline as Bayern went six points clear of Bayer Leverkusen after Xabi Alonso's team drew to RB Leipzig.

RCB look to regain confidence, fine-tune combination ahead of playoffs

Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, are assured of a top-two spot but are sweating on the fitness of Marcus Stoinis

Has de Villiers been underutilised by RCB?

Big picture A botched chase against a deflated Sunrisers Hyderabad team on Wednesday meant Royal Challengers Bangalore will not be able to finish in the top two this season. A result like that could prove to be an inflection point in a team’s season because the difference between finishing in the top two and the next two is so stark in the IPL.Royal Challengers will now have to be perfect in two matches in the playoffs just to make the final. Before that, they will have a dead rubber against Delhi Capitals to finalise their combination and regain their lost confidence while chasing a total. With 20 points in 13 matches, Delhi Capitals are assured of a spot in the top two, deserved reward for their consistency this season. There are still a few points to sort out ahead of the playoffs, including the form of Shreyas Iyer and the health of Marcus Stoinis. The latter is especially crucial for Capitals after recent evidence of a faltering middle order. In the previous match against Chennai Super Kings, Capitals collapsed from 71 for 2 to 99 for 6 in the space of 37 balls. Capitals’ spinners have been effective in the UAE leg of this season, using subtle changes in pace and length to rack up dot balls. Their batters have also been unable to counter that same control in the middle overs from opposition spinners. That seems to be Capitals’ only weakness in an otherwise settled line-up.Related

Maxwell's middle-overs maturity redefines RCB's success

In the news George Garton’s lines were errant against Sunrisers. He finished with 1 for 29 in two overs, the only bowler to have an economy rate of over 10 on a slow pitch. Royal Challengers have options for that No. 8 slot, including legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga and fast bowler Kyle Jamieson. It might make prudent sense to bring in a horses-for-courses bowler that they expect to play in the eliminator in Sharjah on Monday. At this point, that seems like Hasaranga. The only question for Capitals is the fitness of Stoinis. If he is fit, he should slot right back into No. 5 come the playoffs.Cricket on ESPN+

Part of his success is down to his form. His template has been to give himself a few balls at the start but after he gets accustomed to the pace, or lack of, he has been using reverse or switch shots to force spinners off their lines. He has scored 237 runs at an average of 59.3 against spin and a strike rate of 163 with a boundary every 4.8 balls this season. It is a fairly logical strategic choice to hold back the raw pace of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje for Maxwell.Royal Challengers could utilise Daniel Christian and Maxwell to fill up the quota of the fifth bowler. That will allow them to play an additional batter, and more importantly, allow de Villiers the freedom to bat higher up the order instead of as a specialist finisher. Stats that matter Against R Ashwin, de Villiers has been dismissed five times while Maxwell averages 57.5 with a strike rate of over 200. Maxwell is 48 runs away from 2000 IPL runs. Prithvi Shaw is averaging 11.3 at a strike rate of 115 in the UAE leg of this IPL season. In India earlier this year, he had an average of 38.5 at a strike rate of 167.

Liverpool player ratings vs Lille: 50-up in Europe for Mohamed Salah – Egyptian King, Harvey Elliott see Reds straight into Champions League last 16

The Reds now need only one point to seal top spot in the league phase after overcoming gritty 10-man opponents at Anfield

There's just no stopping Liverpool or Mohamed Salah right now. Neither the Reds nor their talisman played particularly well in Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Lille at Anfield but Arne Slot's side still ensured their progression to the last 16 thanks to a 2-1 victory that featured Salah's 50th European goal for the club.

The Egyptian king had started the game poorly but, as he so often does, he produced a goal out of nothing, showing tremendous alertness to latch onto Curtis Jones' through ball, after Lille had lost possession in midfield, before leaving Lucas Chevalier with no chance with his curling finish from just outside the area.

Lille were reduced to 10 men when Aissa Mandi picked up a blatant second booking but Bruno Genesio's side, who have beaten by Real and Atletico Madrid in this season's Champions League, threatened to nick a point when star striker Jonathan David buried a rebound in the 62nd minute. However, Liverpool managed to maintain their perfect record thanks to substitute Harvey Elliott, who found the back of the net with the aid of a wicked deflection.

Below, GOAL rates all of the Liverpool players on show at Anfield as the Merseysiders moved to within one point of sealing top spot in the league phase…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson Becker (6.5/10):

Although Lille always looked a threat on the break, the Brazilian didn't actually have much to do – other than pick the ball out of the net after David's equaliser.

    Conor Bradley (5/10):

As usual, always keen to get forward and created a good chance for Darwin Nunez, but there was more than one sloppy pass, while his positioning was also poor at times. It felt inevitable that the Lille goal would come down his side.

    Jarell Quansah (7/10):

An encouraging performance. Made several timely clearances and was also excellent in possession.

    Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Rightly annoyed by Lille's leveller but once again unruffled for the majority of the game. Indeed, you get the feeling that opponents do their utmost to stay out of his way.

    Kostas Tsimikas (7/10):

Selected ahead of Andy Robertson and justified his inclusion with a strong showing. It was the Greek's challenge that led to Liverpool's opener.

    Midfield

    Ryan Gravenberch (6.5/10):

Taken off at half-time after a solid but unspectacular showing.

    Curtis Jones (7/10):

Jones looked Liverpool's best chance of opening up the Lille defence in the first half and so it proved, with the England international putting Salah away to score with a terrific through-ball. His withdrawal during the interval may well have been pre-planned but worth noting that he did take a knock just before the break.

    Dominik Szoboszlai (6.5/10):

During the first half, the Hungarian spent most of his time putting the Lille backline under pressure. However, after Jones' exit, he dropped a bit deeper to make room for Elliott before coming off himself just after the hour mark.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (7/10):

The Egyptian gave the ball away repeatedly early on but then broke the deadlock with a fine finish. Almost struck again soon after – which only served to further underline the fact that Salah's always got a goal or two in him no matter how well he's playing!

    Darwin Nunez (6.5/10):

Unsurprisingly, the Uruguayan was buzzing after his double at Brentford on Saturday. However, while his movement and effort were both top-drawer, he failed to take the one decent chance that came his way. There was also the obligatory offside goal – though Nunez was arguably unfortunate in this instance.

    Luis Diaz (7/10):

Absolutely no surprise that Mandi saw red for taking down Diaz. The Colombian's work-rate was absolutely fantastic – he regained possession 10 times in total – and he was a real livewire until he faded in the final quarter. Such a shame that he didn't exit with an assist to his name, with Salah failing to make the most of his outrageous ball over the top.

    Subs & Manager

    Harvey Elliott (7.5/10):

Introduced in place of Jones and was heavily involved before putting Liverpool back in front with his deflected effort. He'll be disappointed with one sloppy moment of defending, though, as it could have proved costly.

    Alexis Mac Allister (7/10):

Came on for Gravenberch at half-time and played with his usual mix of aggression and quality. One late block on a shot from Hakon Haraldsson was particularly important.

    Wataru Endo (7/10):

The Japanese took up his usual position in front of the back four after replacing Szoboszlai and was typically solid in possession and tenacious in the tackle.

    Federico Chiesa (7/10):

Took over on the left flank from Diaz and did well again as a late sub, twice forcing Chevalier into good stops after cutting inside onto his favoured right foot.

    Arne Slot (7.5/10):

Job done for the Dutchman, who watched his side secure a last-16 spot in the Champions League with one game remaining, while at the same giving plenty of players game time.

Spurs ace just dropped a 4.5/10 clanger on international duty

The less said about Tottenham’s horrific 3-2 defeat to Brighton the better, right? Quite. Either way, Spurs did enter this international break off the back of a mini-revival.

Prior to that meeting on the South Coast, Ange Postecoglou’s men had won five games on the spin after being defeated by rivals Arsenal.

Brennan Johnson has been a sizeable part of that, and in a good way too, with the former Nottingham Forest man scoring six games in a row for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson

It marks quite the turnaround for the Welshman who was forced to deactivate his social media accounts after receiving vile abuse for his poor display in the north London derby.

Did his fortunes continue for Wales over the break? You bet it did.

Brennan Johnson's performances for Wales

The fear when a player heads off on international duty for their country is colossal. They will either get injured or it’ll mark the end of an impressive run of form.

Well, although Johnson was injured during Wales’ 2-2 draw with Iceland last Friday night, the Spurs winger did get on the scoresheet again to make it seven goals in seven matches.

It’s safe to say he is rampant right now, although he won’t score many easier goals than the one against the Icelandic national side last week.

Harry Wilson fired an effort towards goal that was saved and then clawed off the line by the goalkeeper. Who was waiting? Johnson, of course, who tapped the ball home from a matter of yards out.

Sadly, the bad news was that he only played 45 minutes in the match and was withdrawn as a ‘precaution’ due to injury.

It’s unknown whether he’ll be fit to face West Ham at the weekend but Postecoglou will be keeping all his fingers and toes crossed that the winger is fit and firing. He has been vital this term.

Brennan Johnson

Despite Johnson’s goal, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Spurs players over the break, something Micky van de Ven will testify to.

Micky van de Ven's performances for Netherlands

The Dutchman started the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Hungary last week at left-back where defensively he put in a strong performance, winning four duels, completing 97% of his passes and amassing 112 touches.

That said, unlike that infamous assist against Manchester United a few weeks ago, he did not offer much going forward having failed to register a single attempted cross or key pass.

Matters can’t have been helped by Virgil van Dijk’s red card in the clash but that moment did present the defender with a massive opportunity against Germany on Monday night.

Due to the Liverpool star’s suspension, it meant that Van de Ven started at centre-back but it’s safe to say he didn’t leave too many impressed.

The stats actually suggest that the Tottenham ace had an impressive night, completing 91% of his passes and winning three of his four duels, but he was slightly at fault for the goal. He failed to clear a corner, merely handing the ball straight to Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling who lashed home a thunderous strike.

Van de Ven was subsequently handed a 4.5/10 match rating by Dutch publication Football Oranje, who wrote: ‘Where was the strong, confident Van de Ven that we see at Tottenham? He froze in the centre and was guilty of constant ball loss’.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van de Vaart wasn’t too complimentary either, stating on punditry after the game: “Micky van de Ven.. it’s all well and good but he ain’t no Virgil van Dijk, of course we miss him.”

So, perhaps he’s actually better at left-back? Time will tell, of course, but he’s certainly been an excellent asset for Spurs in the centre of defence.

Liverpool keen on signing "unbelievable" summer target for £50m cut price

Liverpool reportedly remain interested in completing the signing of a summer transfer target, potentially bringing him in for less than his £68m release clause.

Liverpool transfer news

There is still some transfer news doing the rounds with the Reds, despite the window being shut, with both incoming and outgoing rumours emerging in recent weeks. Darwin Nunez is struggling to be a key man under Arne Slot and the Uruguayan has been linked with a move to Barcelona. The La Liga giants are even believed to be preparing an offer for him, potentially ending his time at Anfield in one of the next two windows.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi has emerged as a rumoured incoming target for Liverpool, with club scouts said to be scouting him, possibly viewing him as a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah, whose future continues to be up in the air.

One young player who has caught the eye in 2024 is Adam Wharton, with the Crystal Palace midfielder excelling since joining from Blackburn Rovers and even getting in England’s squad for Euro 2024. The Reds are seen as one of the clubs in the mix to acquire his signature.

Liverpool eye £50m signing of "unbelievable" ace

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are still interested in signing Palace star Eberechi Eze, having shown a willingness to snap him up during the summer transfer window.

The report states that the England international’s £68m release clause “will become available in the summer of 2025”, but with just two years left on his deal at that stage, teams are hoping to bring that price down in negotiations with the Eagles. Palace could end up with between £50-60m for him, according to this update, even though they are reluctant to sell.

Ebere Eze against Manchester United

Eze may not have the most earth-shattering start to the season for a struggling Palace team, bagging one goal and zero assists in seven Premier League appearances so far, but there is no denying that he would be a great addition at Liverpool.

The 26-year-old has stood out as one of the best attacking players in the league over the past 12 months or so, netting 11 times in the division last season, while Palace manager Oliver Glasner has lauded him in recent weeks.

“Who’s a better player than Eze? For me he’s absolutely top, if he was luckier this season he would have five or six goals. He’s always dangerous because he has the quality and ability at 1-1, he’s such an unbelievable finisher, in some situations he can improve, he’s a guy who can always score and he’s someone who everyone likes.”

Admittedly, Liverpool aren’t crying out for more attacking players, but with Nunez and Salah’s futures not exactly feeling secure, the England ace should be viewed as a great option to come in.

Liverpool wanted £235m star in the making but signed Szoboszlai instead

Liverpool’s midfield would have been taken to another level with this addition.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 7, 2024

The fact that the Reds could perhaps get him on the cheap – relative to his clause – is an added bonus, while his flair and versatility will surely appeal to Slot, with the Palace man capable of excelling out wide or in an attacking midfield role.

Matthew Hayden, Vernon Philander appointed Pakistan coaches for T20 World Cup

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden and former South Africa seamer Vernon Philander have been added to the Pakistan team’s coaching staff for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. The new PCB chairman, Ramiz Raja, announced the appointments on Monday, citing the aggression and quality of the players as defining reasons for their hiring. The two former cricketers came as unexpected appointments, and it was not immediately clear what specific roles they would play. Ramiz also said there would be a head coach appointed alongside them, but did not reveal a name.”Matthew Hayden is Australian, and has experience of winning World Cups and was a great player himself,” Ramiz said. “It might be very beneficial to have an Australian occupying the dressing room. And Pakistan, of course, can win the World Cup, they just need to improve their performances an extra 10%. Vernon Philander I know very well, and he understands bowling, and has a great record against Australia.”Hayden and Philander have exceptional credentials as cricketers, but neither has any substantive coaching experience. Philander only retired from international cricket in 2020, and was due to take part in the South African domestic season which begins on September 24 this year. Hayden retired in 2009, and has taken on occasional media work, but his assignment with Pakistan at the World Cup is his first major coaching assignment.Philander linking up with Pakistan ahead of the World Cup is complicated a little, though, by his contract with the Western Province domestic side in South Africa, who he was signed to play for this season. An official at Western Province confirmed to ESPNcricinfo Philander’s contract had been running since May, with the side having paid him since then. WP are expected to issue a statement on the matter in due course. The PCB, however, told ESPNcricinfo WP have given Philander permission to join Pakistan until the end of the T20 World Cup.Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis stepped down as head coach and bowling coach of the Pakistan team last week. They were replaced by Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq on an interim basis for Pakistan’s home series against New Zealand, which starts later this week. ESPNcricinfo understands that Saqlain is likely to continue as head coach through to the World Cup, and would in that case share coaching duties with Hayden and Philander.

Kenedy viaja ainda nesta terça para Londres, onde se juntará ao elenco do Chelsea, que se vê carente em relação a alas em seu plantel.

10 players who can shine under Thomas Tuchel for England

Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the new England manager, with the German replacing Gareth Southgate as the permanent Three Lions boss.

The 51-year-old has managed in England before, winning the Champions League during his time with Chelsea, while he has also taken charge of the likes of European heavyweights Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the last 10 years.

Tuchel will officially take charge of England in 2025, and his first major tournament looks set to be the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in Canada, Mexico and the United States. But who could really shine under Tuchel for England? We’ve taken a look at 10 players who could enjoy working under the German.

All stats correct as of 16th October 2024.

5 reasons the FA hired Thomas Tuchel as England manager

England’s successor to Gareth Southgate is ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel – but why was he so popular with the FA?

ByBarney Lane Oct 16, 2024 1 Harry Kane England caps: 101

England’s captain and record goalscorer, Harry Kane already has previous experience of working under Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

The centre-forward has scored goals under 17 different managers during his career for club and country, though his best minute-to-goal ratio has come when playing for Tuchel.

In 45 games, Kane has scored an impressive 44 goals and registered 12 assists under Tuchel, so the striker will surely be delighted that he is the new Three Lions boss.

England international Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham looks set to be an extremely important player for England over the next decade, and the Real Madrid star already has an admirer in Thomas Tuchel.

During his time at Bayern Munich, Tuchel hailed Bellingham, saying: “Jude has had an extraordinary development. He was fantastic here in the Bundesliga and how he progressed here shows the level of personality, this is only possible with a huge personality.‌

“Everyone who plays for Real Madrid also plays with the pressure of the shirt, plays with the pressure to play for this club with the demands and expectations. He handles it like he has never done anything else before.

“He is very dangerous, very physical in his game and is an absolute key player.”

Should Tuchel apply his 3-4-2-1 system he used at Chelsea with the Three Lions, Bellingham could perhaps star as one of two in behind Kane.

3 Cole Palmer England caps: 11

A Chelsea star who Tuchel didn’t work with at Stamford Bridge is Cole Palmer, who has arguably been one of the most in-form players in world football during 2024.

Palmer was reduced to a role from the bench at Euro 2024 under Southgate, though he scored in the final against Spain and registered an assist in the semi-final against the Netherlands.

Should his incredible form at club level continue, Tuchel may have no choice but to find a place for Palmer in the England XI, whether that be in a 3-4-2-1 system or a 4-2-3-1 formation, looking to supply Kane in attack.

1 ByBarney Lane Oct 11, 2024 4 Mason Mount England caps: 36

Central midfielder Mason Mount starred under Tuchel during his time at Chelsea, winning the Champions League in 2021. Talking after 12 months working under the German, Mount spoke about the attacking role he’d been given.

“This season over the last few I’ve probably played a little bit higher than I was used to – playing as a kind of forward 10, or sometimes a winger or a false 9. So I’ve had to adapt a bit, but that gives me more opportunity to get into the box and have the opportunities to score and create.

“So far this season that’s been a big focus of mine, to improve that and to put pressure on myself to be someone who wants to go forward and step up and score goals and create assists. That’s definitely something that’s improved over the time he’s been here.”

Mount’s since had a frustrating spell with Manchester United, but if he can play regularly for the Red Devils, Tuchel may look at a reunion with the midfielder on the international stage.

5 Marcus Rashford England caps: 60

One player who hasn’t been as prolific as Kane in front of goal during his career is Marcus Rashford, though the Manchester United winger is a player who Tuchel rates highly. Even though the two haven’t worked together during their careers, the German heaped praise on Rashford during his time at PSG.

He has struggled for consistency with the Red Devils, which resulted in failing to become a regular under Southgate, but he could be a player who Tuchel is relishing the chance to work with following his previous comments.

6 Ruben Loftus-Cheek England caps: 10

Another former Chelsea player who may be in line to work with Tuchel is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The midfielder’s last England appearance came way back in 2018 and has since featured under Tuchel for the Blues, with the German even comparing Loftus-Cheek to the iconic Michael Ballack.

“I was quite a fan of him when he was younger. He reminded me of Michael Ballack in his style of play, his movements. There were links with him moving to Germany. We are well aware of his talent.”

Loftus-Cheek was sold to Milan in 2023 and has been a regular for the Serie A giants since then, so perhaps a call-up could be on the cards.

7 Conor Gallagher England caps: 19

Continuing the trend of ex-Chelsea midfielders who could shine under Tuchel for England is Conor Gallagher, now at Atletico Madrid.

The new England boss once compared Gallagher to N’Golo Kante and even handed the former his full Blues debut after numerous loan spells away from Stamford Bridge.

The pair’s time working together at Chelsea may have been short and sweet, but with Gallagher now an important member of Diego Simeone’s plans in Spain, perhaps an international role could be his in the near future.

ByBen Browning Jul 17, 2024 8 Eric Dier England caps: 49

Centre-back Eric Dier appeared to surprise Tuchel during his time at Bayern Munich, with the coach admitting the defender was an “excellent signing” from Tottenham Hotspur that “exceeded expectations” for the German giants.

Dier was once a regular member of Southgate’s England squads, and with Tuchel knowing all about the player and what he could bring to the squad, perhaps a first call-up since 2022 could be on the cards.

9 Ben Chilwell England caps: 21

Left-back has been an unsettled area of the pitch for England in recent years, with first-choice Luke Shaw struggling with various injuries.

Right-back Kieran Trippier was used there often by Southgate, but Ben Chilwell could be the one to star for England under Tuchel. The pair know each other from Stamford Bridge where there were ups and downs, but at one point, Tuchel hailed Chilwell’s role as an attacking wing-back.

If he goes with a similar 3-4-2-1 system on the international stage, perhaps Chilwell could become a starter under Tuchel’s plans.

10 Trent Alexander-Arnold England caps: 33

Trent Alexander-Arnold for England

If wing-backs are the way forward for Tuchel with England, that could suit Trent Alexander-Arnold, who struggled to star under Southgate in recent years.

A role in midfield was tried at Euro 2024, but Tuchel allowing Alexander-Arnold to shine as a wing-back could be the way forward for a player with exceptional ability on the ball.

Three covering centre-backs would allow Alexander-Arnold to focus on getting forward, and he could be preferred to Reece James, who has struggled with injuries in recent years.
