Move over Alcaraz: 7/10 Everton ace just played his best game of 24/25

It wasn’t the prettiest of performances, but then David Moyes and any fan of an Everton persuasion won’t care a jot.

The Toffees extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches with a 2-1 at Selhurst Park, springing above the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and into 13th place, level with Oliver Glasner’s beaten Crystal Palace.

Sean Dyche’s Everton always produced resilient and determined displays, but something was missing. Now, Everton are playing with more freedom and belief, still rooted in their principles but flourishing under a manager who knows the club and knows it well.

Beto scores for Everton

He knew that Charly Alcaraz would be a shrewd signing, and the Argentinian has repaid the faith with the winning goal in south London.

Charly Alcaraz stakes his claim

Alcaraz signed on loan with an obligatory £13m buy option inserted at the end of the January transfer window and he’s started to impress with his cultured feet and combative mindset, claiming his first Everton goal on his first start against the Eagles.

It was a dreamy starting debut for the young buck, 22, who had a big task in replacing the suspended Abdoulaye Doucoure but passed with flying colours.

Not only was he instinctive in firing beyond Dean Henderson to seal the three points, but Alcaraz created three key passes throughout the evening, dynamic and eager.

Charly Alcaraz celebrates for Everton

Everton didn’t play all that well but they have unearthed that winning sense and are thriving under Moyes’ wing. The Scotsman is providing the players with a new lease of life.

Alcaraz was always going to work hard to impress at his new club, but a longer-serving Toffee’s showing shouldn’t go without credit, for he’s starting to look like a real asset.

Everton's real winner at Selhurst Park

The man in question is Jack Harrison, whose 2024/25 campaign has been a frustrating one, all told.

Harrison’s interminable wait for a goal or an assist – he’s yet to get off the mark across 25 games this term – goes on, but he’s beginning to look far more connected in his play.

The 28-year-old was praised by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland for his “real shift” against Palace, while The Liverpool Echo handed him a 7/10 match rating that perhaps could have been even higher, for he showed plenty of ‘running and endeavour’ in the large and vacant boots of Iliman Ndiaye.

It’s curious that Harrison has still failed to bag a goal or an assist but his overall level has been something to admire over the past week, forging a path back into the good books for himself.

Winning six duels in total, the versatile wideman completed four dribbles and won two more duels, looking complete and tenacious in his work. Moreover, he was even more eye-catching from a defensive standpoint during the thrilling draw with Liverpool, coming off the bench in the first half to replace the forced-off Ndiaye.

Jack Harrison in action for Everton

So then, the wait for that elusive direct goal involvement rages on. Still, Harrison has proved over the past few games that he is capable of providing effective support across the field.

This might just have been his best performance yet under Moyes, with a season-high four dribbles completed illustrating his effectiveness on the left flank, and an exciting turning point ahead of the business months, perhaps.

With Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil among the sidelined, it was important that the Blues put in a potent collective display, and Moyes is sure to be pleased with his players, Harrison and Alcaraz in particular.

Everton struck gold selling £14m flop who's now worth less than Doucoure

Chelsea ask about signing £145m forward in regular talks with elite club

Chelsea have been in regular conversations with an elite club, and during these points of contact, they’ve enquired about signing a marquee forward for Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea pursuing new attackers this summer

Injuries to Marc Guiu, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke – combined with João Félix’s loan to AC Milan and Mykhailo Mudryk’s failed drug test – have resulted in the Blues’ sudden shortage of attacking options in the final third.

Chelsea approach £83m Barcelona player to see if he'd join Maresca

The Blues could look to raid Hansi Flick’s side.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 16, 2025

At the start of the Premier League season, it was hardly thinkable that Maresca wouldn’t have many options to play with in that department, with Chelsea possessing serious strength in depth over the first half of 2024/2025, but their decision not to bring in another forward during the January window could now have serious repercussions.

Attention is already turning to the summer window and who they could target ahead of next campaign, with Chelsea believed to be serious contenders for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams among other high-profile names.

In terms of strikers, Chelsea have laid groundwork to sign Liam Delap ahead of the Club World Cup, but he isn’t their only centre-forward target, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko also high on their shortlist (Simon Phillps).

Supporters will be keen for the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to bring in another attacking third option, with Chelsea failing to register a single shot on target in their last game against Brighton and Christopher Nkunku proving ineffective alongside the out-of-form Cole Palmer.

Chelsea ask AC Milan about signing Rafael Leao

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, in an article for The Boot Room, AC Milan forward Rafael Leao is also being considered by Maresca’s side.

The 25-year-old with 17 goal contributions in all competitions this campaign (nine goals, eight assists) does have a release clause in his contract, but it stands at a seismic £145 million, and Milan would only consider letting him go if a club triggered it.

Nevertheless, Bailey writes that Chelsea have asked Milan about Leao in regular conversations with the Serie A heavyweights, and they also discussed Felix’s long-term future at the San Siro.

AC Milan's Theo Hernandez celebrates scoring their first goal with Rafael Leao and Tijjani Reijnders.

The Rossoneri are apparently unwilling to sell as things stand, but Barcelona’s interest and the temptation of Chelsea means a summer exit cannot be entirely ruled out. Leao was said to be on the shortlist to replace Kylian Mbappé, according to Ligue 1 journalist Julien Laurens.

“He’s definitely on the shortlist to replace Mbappe. The club now knows for sure that Mbappe is leaving,” said Laurens last year. “I’m not sure if he would want to go. He’s on the shortlist, and he can make his mind up.”

Meanwhile, the Portugal international has also drawn some comparisons to Brazil legend Ronaldinho, even if he does need to work on his consistency.

“He’s Ronaldinho-vibes, sometimes, when he’s on it,” said TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves. “I think to be world-class, you’ve got to be consistent. Because he’s a bit flaky and a bit loose at times, he’s probably just missing that gap to world-class, but the talent’s there to be world-class.”

Hamstring injury puts Keegan Petersen out of Australia tour

Batter suffered the injury during the CSA T20 Challenge final and will take six to eight weeks to recover

Keegan Petersen has been ruled out of South Africa’s three-Test tour of Australia because of a hamstring tear.Petersen sustained the injury at the weekend, during the CSA T20 Challenge final, and will need between six and eight weeks to recover. This is the second tour Petersen will miss since making his international debut in 2021; he contracted Covid-19 last year and was left out of the touring party to New Zealand.CSA is also waiting on a medical update on Keshav Maharaj, who suffered a groin injury at the men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Maharaj was unable to run while batting against Netherlands in South Africa’s last match, and will be assessed this week to determine his availability. Selection convener Victor Mpitsang confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the squad for the Australia series, which starts on December 17, will be announced next week.In Petersen’s place, South Africa have some experienced options to choose from. Rassie van der Dussen, who broke his finger against England in August and missed the World Cup, has recovered and will play red-ball cricket in the lead up to the Tests, while Temba Bavuma, who missed the England series with an elbow injury, is also fit. Ryan Rickelton and Khaya Zondo, who played in England, are likely to be part of the squad but Aiden Markram, who was dropped in England, could miss out.South Africa will travel with a regular-sized squad of 15 or 16, rather than the enlarged groups they deployed throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Given conditions in Australia, they are unlikely to take a clutch of spinners but concerns over Maharaj could see Simon Harmer included. The fast-bowling pack is likely to be made up of familiar faces: Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen.South Africa do not play any cricket from early January to late February, to accommodate for the new T20 franchise league, SA20, which means Petersen is likely to only become available for the national side for their two-Test series against West Indies in late February 2023.

Hurraira 193*, Amin 79* give Northern first-innings lead

Hurraira scores third ton in four games after Sindh fold for 284

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2022

Muhammad Hurraira led the way for Northern once again•PCB

Muhammad Hurraira scored his third hundred in four matches as Northern took command over Sindh in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final on the second day. This one was the most impressive of the lot, with Hurraira unbeaten on 193 off 202 balls by stumps. It meant Northern took a 12-run lead over Sindh, with eight wickets still in the bank. Hurraira’s captain, Umar Amin, composed an unbeaten 79 at a more leisurely pace, and by stumps, the unbroken third-wicket stand had stretched to 269.The day had begun much more auspiciously for Sindh, who added 54 to their overnight score of 230 for 7, thanks to fireworks from No.9 Asif Mehmood and an unbeaten 61 from Fawad Alam. It pushed Sindh’s score up from 151 for 7 to 284 before Aamer Jamal dismissed Nos. 10 and 11.Sindh struck early with the ball twice, a double-strike from Mohammad Umar removing Hasan Raza and Faseeh Rana inside the first ten overs. But that was as good as it would get for Sindh, with Hurraira taking the attack to every bowler, pace and spin alike. Shahnawaz Dahani came in for particular punishment at Hurraira’s hands, particularly as the day drew to a close, as did Mohammad Umar, whose last 17 balls Hurraira plundered 33 runs off. Along the way, he had taken over as the highest run-scorer of this edition of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy edition, a feat he managed last year, too.But the damage had been done through the middle part of the day as Sindh’s bowlers were shut out of any realistic wicket-taking opportunities, with the fields pushed out to prevent run-scoring. But Hurraira, and to a lesser extent, Amin ensured that wouldn’t be possible, and a day that began so brightly for Sindh had darkened considerably as the players were brought off for bad light half an hour before the close.

He could be Amad 2.0: Man Utd plot move to sign £33m "diamond" for Amorim

Manchester United have all but confirmed their first major signing of the January transfer window. Patrick Dorgu will join the club from Serie A side Lecce, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal will cost United £25m up front, with a further £4.1m to be paid in add-ons.

The Dane certainly solves a lot of issues for United at left wing-back, given the options Ruben Amorim has had at his disposal so far, which includes Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, both right-backs by trade.

However, the addition of Dorgu certainly adds quality and depth for the Red Devils at wing-back. This is something they seemingly want to replicate on the right-hand side if the recent transfer rumours are to be believed.

Man Utd's latest transfer news

The player in question here is 17-year-old Portuguese star Geovany Quenda. The Sporting CP star has been making waves across Europe this season, and could now depart the club at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

According to a report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Red Devils are believed to be ‘exploring’ a summer move for the versatile 17-year-old, although INEOS are yet to send through an official offer to Amorim’s former club.

In terms of a price for the youngster, he could cost upwards of €40m (£33m), with United targeting a permanent move for Quenda. Ornstein explains that, for United, ‘work on next window to step up after this market shuts’ on Monday.

Why Quenda would be a good signing

Signing Quenda would certainly be a big addition for United. He is an exciting young player, who has excelled this season for Sporting. In 34 games across all competitions, he has two goals and six assists for Leoes.

One of those assists came in Sporting’s 4-1 thrashing of Manchester City in the Champions League.

One of the benefits of signing the 17-year-old is his ability to play as a wingback in Amorim’s system. Quenda played there when he first broke into the Sporting side and saw great degrees of success.

There is a clear plan for United to recruit attacking wing-backs, as the addition of Dorgu and the potential signing of Quenda demonstrate. In fact, the pair have similar attacking numbers. For example, the Sporting star averages 1.9 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, whilst Dorgu averaged 0.9 key passes per game.

Someone who Quenda could replicate at Old Trafford is a potential future teammate, Amad. The Ivorian has been simply sensational for the Red Devils this term, with nine goals and seven assists in 34 games across all competitions.

The 22-year-old has scored in some big games this season, including the winning goal in the Manchester Derby at the Etihad Stadium, and a crucial equaliser away to Liverpool at Anfield to earn his side a point.

Like Quenda, Amad has excelled under Amorim and has performed well as a right wing-back, as well as playing as a number ten. Both players have played 18 times under the Portuguese boss, and have impressive records each.

Signing Quenda could allow Amad to move permanently into the number ten role, with the 17-year-old becoming first choice right wing-back at Old Trafford. This arguably gets the best out of both players and means they can fit easily into Amorim’s system.

The Sporting youngster was described as a “diamond” by football scout Antonio Mango, and he could certainly be a great long-term investment for the Red Devils.

If he can replicate what Amad has done at right wing-back so far under Amorim, then United will certainly be happy with the deal. He has already shown glimpses of that form at Sporting under the United boss, and the Red Devils will hope he can repeat and better that.

For just £33m, this could be a fantastic deal for INEOS, as they look to construct the perfect squad for their new boss.
