Man City looking to sign exciting gem called the "next Ousmane Dembele"

Manchester City are looking to sign an exciting young gem who has been described as the next Ousmane Dembele, according to a new report.

Dembele thriving at Paris Saint-Germain

After years of failing to live up to the £135.5 million fee that Barcelona paid Borussia Dortmund for him, Ousmane Dembele is finally proving just why he was once considered one of the best young players in the world.

Sadly for Barcelona, however, he’s not doing it for them, but instead for Paris Saint-Germain, whom he joined in the summer of 2023.

After a solid first season in the French capital, Dembele has kicked into overdrive this term, having scored 30 goals and provided six assists in all competitions, which is by far and away the best return of his career.

Not only has his goal return put him firmly in the race for the European Golden Shoe, but has helped storm into a now-insurmountable lead in Ligue 1, as well as the Champions League quarterfinals.

Speaking about the 27-year-old back in February after PSG beat Brest in the Champions League, former Chelsea and Liverpool star Joe Cole described him as Europe’s current best player.

“Dembele, they’ve got probably the most in-form player, let alone winger, in European football,” said Cole, according to TNT Sports. “And when he’s on form, with his attributes, he’s unstoppable.”

PSG head coach Luis Enique, meanwhile, said of Dembele: “Ousmane is in a huge moment of confidence and he’s now like the PlayStation [player] with the light above him!”

Man City want the next Dembele

While Dembele will no doubt be high on the wish list of many of Europe’s big clubs this summer, he’s unlikely to be going anywhere – both because of his good form in Paris and the fact his contract runs until 2028.

So instead, one of those clubs, Manchester City, seem to have turned their attention to his proposed successor – 15-year-old wonderkid Johan Martinez, as they look to the future under Pep Guardiola.

According to Football Insider, Man City have set their sights on Martinez ahead of a potential summer swoop, having impressed the club’s scouts.

Dubbed very exciting in the report, Martinez plays as a winger in the academy of Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle – the same academy from which Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo emerged – and has been likened to Dembele because of his skill and ability to play with both feet.

Liverpool and Brighton are also interested in Martinez, as are some clubs from Germany and Italy, according to a separate report from TEAMTalk’s Rudy Galetti,

Of course, at such a young age, it’s impossible to tell right now quite just how Martinez will develop, however, all signs point to a promising future.

One thing’s for sure, though, if City do land him, they’ll be hoping he can be closer to the Dembele of PSG and Dortmund, rather than the Dembele of Barcelona.

Everton and Friedkin Group racing to sign 18 y/o forward ahead of Liverpool

Looking ahead to their first summer at the helm, The Friedkin Group are now reportedly battling to sign a young attacking sensation for Everton after sending their scouts to watch him in action.

Everton transfer news

All but safe in the Premier League courtesy of David Moyes’ arrival to signal an impressive turnaround, Everton now have the chance to set their sights on moving beyond relegation scraps once and for all. And that could see them enjoy a fruitful summer transfer window, having already been linked with moves for the likes of Hamza Igamane.

The Rangers star has enjoyed an excellent season in a struggling star and could now be on the move amid interest from Merseyside and elsewhere. There’s no doubt that the Toffees could do with an attacking boost too, given how Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jack Harrison have struggled, with the latter only finding his first goal of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

Igamane isn’t the only attacking target that Friedkin have seemingly set their sights on, either, as they look to take the Toffees back into the top half of the Premier League in their first full season in charge.

According to The Boot Room, Everton have now joined the race to sign Sindre Walle Egeli from Nordsjaelland this summer after Friedkin sent their scouts to watch the young winger in action.

A rising star who would be an instant upgrade on Harrison, Egeli has found himself at the centre of interest of rivals Liverpool, Newcastle United and those at Goodison Park, sparking quite the battle between Premier League sides ahead of the summer.

Still just 18 years old, Everton would certainly be wise to act as early as possible if they want to stay within range of the winger’s price tag, which is only likely to increase over time.

"Strong" Egeli could become instant Everton starter

Whilst Egeli’s age may suggest that he would need time to settle before breaking into Moyes’ starting side, Everton’s disjointed and struggling set of options going forward means that there’s room for a rising star of his calibre. It wouldn’t be the first time that he’s been thrown into a senior role either, and last time he certainly didn’t sink. Instead, he has thrived at Nordsjaelland.

Scoring six goals and assisting another five in all competitions so far this season, Egeli has more goal involvements than Harrison and Calvert-Lewin combined, highlighting both the struggles of Everton’s attack and the potential of the young Norwegian.

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates scoring their first goal

Earning plenty of praise as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson described Egeli as a “tall, strong left-footed” player with “brilliant finishing and ball striking”.

All signs point towards stardom for a target that would transform Moyes’ frontline for years to come. Amid plenty of interest elsewhere, it would represent a major coup if Everton managed to secure Egeli’s signature this summer.

Having set their ambitions beyond simply maintaining their Premier League place, signing a rising star would certainly be a good way for Friedkin to commence their summer business.

Two golden generations to have their last shot at a Test world title

This final feels especially weighty, since it pits the two best teams not just of Test cricket’s last two years but arguably of its last decade

Do Australia have an edge in the WTC final?

Big picture – final flourish for Warner, Starc, Ashwin, Kohli, Pujara? Is it world cricket’s most prestigious match? Or is it a final that should be more than a one-off contest but cannot be, thanks to the constraints of a calendar that is squeezing Test cricket to the margins, awkwardly positioned between two events that are, in hugely contrasting ways, more important, and tacked onto the end of an exclusionary league that isn’t even a proper league, in which nearly every team plays fewer Test matches than they used to?The answer, perhaps, is that it is both. For all its flaws, it’s the final of the World Test Championship, and for the 22 players who’ll feature in it, could be career-defining, and it could end with joys and regrets that they hold onto for the rest of their lives. This final feels especially weighty, since it pits the two best teams not just of Test cricket’s last two years but arguably of its last decade.Related

Quiz: Who was India's leading run-getter during this WTC cycle?

Lyon: 'I've never conquered this game of cricket and never will'

India were Test cricket’s dominant side, with all their key players at or approaching their peaks, during the 2019-21 cycle, during which they lost only one series, to New Zealand, before losing the final to the same team. They’ve had to chart a more tortuous route to the final this time, and some of the great names in their ranks have lost some of their old invulnerability, but they remain a superb team that will treasure this chance to do to Australia what New Zealand did to them two years ago.Australia will feel they should have been part of that 2021 final – they missed out because an over-rate penalty consigned them to third place rather than second on the points table. They’re here now, though, as league-table toppers, and they start with a clear edge. They are, like India, an all-weather side, but they’re especially good in conditions that favour pace over spin. More crucially, they start with fewer key players out injured. Australia will miss Josh Hazlewood, while India will be without Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, two once-in-a-generation players. The fact that India still look formidable is a credit to the depth of talent in their system. This final may also represent something of a final flourish for the era-defining players that crowd the two sides. Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc and David Warner are all 33 or older, as are R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Umesh Yadav, with Mohammed Shami less than three months shy of joining them. They’ve all played upwards of 50 Tests, barring captains Cummins and Rohit who are set to reach that milestone on Wednesday. Two golden generations, then, are gunning for what could be their last shot at a Test world title. Some dreams are set to come true, and some others to shatter.Form guideAustralia DWLLD (last five Tests, most recent first)
India DLWWWIn the spotlight – Cummins and ShamiPat Cummins endured a difficult tour of India in February-March, on and off the field. He picked up three wickets in two Tests at an average of 39.55, and left the tour midway to spend time with his seriously ill mother, who died when the fourth Test was in play. In his absence, Australia made a stirring fightback from 2-0 down, winning the third Test and drawing the fourth, and stand-in captain Steven Smith came in for widespread praise for his tactical acumen. While Smith said he no longer held full-time leadership aspirations, and reaffirmed that this was now “Pat’s team”, Cummins’ captaincy might still come under some scrutiny at The Oval, where he’ll also want to restate his credentials as the world’s best fast bowler, particularly with Hazlewood out injured.5:05

Will Warner shine? Will Green adapt?

Bumrah might contest Cummins’ claim to being the world’s best fast bowler, but he’ll play no part in this final. Bumrah’s absence leaves India without their No. 1 strike weapon and could potentially upset the balance of their attack too – it’s harder for them to pick four fast bowlers, even if conditions dictate it, if Bumrah isn’t around. It is imperative, then, that Mohammed Shami brings all his class and experience to play. His record in England – 38 wickets in 13 Tests at 40.52 – is deceptive, because he’s often bowled brilliantly in the country without enjoying a lot of luck, and India will hope he’ll figure out a way at The Oval to not just beat the bat frequently but find its edge too.Team news – Bharat or Kishan? With Australia confirming that Scott Boland will take the injured Hazlewood’s place, their XI almost picks itself. With Peter Handscomb dropping out of the squad after an excellent spell as a horses-for-courses middle-order batter in India, Travis Head will move back to No. 5 and allow David Warner, who missed the last two Tests in India with a fractured elbow, to return as opener alongside Usman Khawaja.Australia (likely): 1 David Warner, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Scott Boland.Ajinkya Rahane is set to return to Test cricket for the first time since January 2022, his experience likely to get him the nod over Suryakumar Yadav with the incumbent No. 5 Sheyas Iyer out with a back injury. KS Bharat’s superior glovework won him the nod over Ishan Kishan during the home series against Australia, but in English conditions where keepers spend far less time up to the stumps negotiating sharp turn and inconsistent bounce, India could be tempted to back Kishan’s counterattacking skills and left-handedness. The biggest question they face, though, is whether to play four fast bowlers and just one spinner in Ravindra Jadeja, or pair him with R Ashwin.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 KS Bharat/Ishan Kishan (wk), 8 R Ashwin/Shardul Thakur, 9 Umesh Yadav/Jaydev Unadkat, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Mohammed Siraj.Pitch and weatherSpin often plays a crucial role at The Oval. Since the start of 2012, during which time the ground has hosted 10 Tests, fast bowlers have averaged a collective 30.57 at The Oval and spinners 34.83. Of the English grounds that have hosted at least five Tests in this period, The Oval is where fast bowlers have achieved their worst collective average, while spinners have done better only at the Ageas Bowl (31.27) and Headingley (32.43).These numbers, though, could have something to do with Oval Tests tending to take place in August and September, when the weather is warm and dry and the pitches have undergone wear and tear over the long English summer. The ground has never previously hosted a Test match as early as June.Oval pitches typically tend to offer plenty of bounce, which could enthuse bowlers, both fast and slow, on either side, as well as allow batters to play their shots if there isn’t too much sideways movement. The forecast promises a clear, bright start to the Test match, with maximum temperatures in the early 20s Celsius. There could be rain on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, though – the scheduled fourth, fifth and reserve days.Stats and trivia India have won their last four Test series against Australia – two at home and two away – all by 2-1 margins. Australia (0.411) and India (0.400) have near-identical win-loss ratios at The Oval. Australia have won seven and lost 17 of their 38 Tests here, while India have won two and lost five of their 14. Virat Kohli is 21 short of becoming the fifth India batter to score 2000 Test runs against Australia. Sachin Tendulkar (3630), VVS Laxman (2434), Rahul Dravid (2143) and Cheteshwar Pujara (2033) are the others to have reached the mark. In three Tests at The Oval, Steven Smith has scored 391 runs at an average of 97.75, with two hundreds and an 80 in five innings.Quotes”Think this puts a bit of a bookend on the last few years, then feels like it starts afresh with an Ashes series. Think the first final was a bit of foreign concept and it probably wasn’t until we missed out that we thought that would be nice to be part of. So there’s been a bit more on it in the last couple of years and pretty pumped to be here.”
“No, actually the way he is batting at the moment, I don’t think he needs any advice. It’s just about his preparation, how he’s prepared in the last five or six days since he’s come back from the IPL […] Gill is somebody who likes to bat, likes to spend a lot of time in the middle. I know even though it was the T20 format, you saw he got big hundreds [in the IPL]. He likes to be out there in the middle and face that challenge. That is what he likes and that is what I will also hope [he does in the WTC final]. And team India will also hope that he spends a lot of time in the middle and plays well like he’s been doing in the last six or eight months. So to be honest, not really too much to tell him. It’s just about giving him that confidence because he’s a very confident player.”

Problema do treinador, dirão.

E de fato, não se pode dizer que da posição ele não entenda. Mas evidente que a postura é a mesma de quando mais da metade do time perecia no departamento médico: cada jogo é um jogo, cada caso é um caso. Por hora, a prioridade é quinta.

– No futuro, vamos analisar jogo a jogo. Os dois são ótimos goleiros e trabalham bem com os pés. Sabem fazer funções importantes para o jogo. Eu espero que o Jandrei volte bem e acredito que existe possibilidade real de ele jogar na quinta-feira.

Everton now battling to sign "fantastic" star Friedkin have already scouted

As The Friedkin Group look to make their mark yet again, Everton have reportedly joined the race to sign an impressive central defender, who has already caught the attention of the Toffees’ scouts.

Everton transfer news

Since the arrival of David Moyes, any relegation concerns have been eased, with those at Goodison Park setting their sights on handing a historic ground a fitting farewell in its final five Premier League games. Even away from home, Everton have impressed – extending their recent unbeaten run to five games with a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

Meanwhile, now that their relegation fears are all but over, Everton can begin turning their attention towards Friedkin’s first summer transfer window at the helm, in which they’ll aim to welcome the reinforcements needed to take the Toffees back into the top half.

The rumours have already been coming thick and fast on that front, with one particular defender now reportedly on the radar of those at Goodison Park ahead of the summer.

According to The Boot Room, Everton are now battling to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers, who Friedkin have already scouted ahead of the transfer window. The former Tottenham Hotspur defender has found his best form since joining Celtic on a permanent basis almost three years ago and could now get the chance to earn Premier League redemption.

With Jarrad Branthwaite’s future in doubt as ever, Carter-Vickers certainly wouldn’t be a bad target for Everton to consider if they lose their star defender. He ticks boxes for experience at the top level and being a player at the peak of his powers who is capable of moving Moyes’ side beyond settling for top-flight safety.

"Fantastic" Carter-Vickers would take Everton up a level

It wasn’t so long ago that Carter-Vickers was keeping Harry Kane quiet as Bayern Munich were forced to escape an evening to forget through Alphonso Davies’ last-gasp winner to knock Celtic out of the Champions League’s last 16. Now, after proving the level that he belongs for the rest of Europe to see, the defender could arrive in Merseyside to drag Everton back to where they belong.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers

Earning plenty of praise after that performance against the Bundesliga giants, the American was dubbed a “strong” and “fast” central defender whose passing ability is “fantastic” by The Athletic’s Alex Barker.

In Everton’s ideal world, Branthwaite will once again stay put this summer before Moyes completes his backline with a player of Carter-Vickers’ calibre. It’s then that the former West Ham United boss could have James Tarkowski, Jake O’Brien, Branthwaite and the American defender to choose from, providing four excellent options.

However, with Aston Villa and others also interested, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees step up their pursuit of the Celtic star this summer.

Colin Graves insists he witnessed no racism during his tenure at Yorkshire

Colin Graves, Yorkshire’s former chair, insists that he never witnessed any instances of racism during his time at the helm, and has instead doubled down on the suggestion raised within the club’s initial report into Azeem Rafiq’s allegations back in 2021, that regrettable words may have been used within the context of dressing-room “banter”.His assertion brought a swift response from Yorkshire’s independent board, who insisted that the club was “not for sale” and that they had needed to change a culture that had allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to take place.Graves served as Yorkshire chair between 2012 and 2015, a spell that coincided with Rafiq’s initial period at the club. And his comments come after Yorkshire admitted to four amended charges relating to their handling of Rafiq’s allegations of racism and bullying, with sanctions expected to be handed down on June 27.”When I was chairman of the club, when some of these allegations were made, I can tell you now, nothing was brought up within the club,” Graves told Sky Sports News.”And I ran the club on an open-door basis as chairman, players could come and see me if they had issues and they did so on a regular basis … nothing was ever brought up on the table about any racism allegations whatsoever.”I think there have been odd occasions where words have been said that people may regret afterwards,” he added. “I don’t think it was done on a racist, savage basis. I think there was a lot of – I know people don’t like the word banter – but I think there could have been a lot of banter in there about it, and I know people don’t like that.”Graves’ comments drew swift condemnation from the ECB, for whom he served as chair between 2015 and 2020.”We are disappointed to see the comments made by Colin Graves on the historical racist issues at Yorkshire County Cricket Club,” the ECB said in a statement.”We must never again hear of accounts like Azeem Rafiq’s, where racist slurs are used as part of normalised everyday language.”These events, along with many issues experienced by Azeem and others during their time at Yorkshire have been upheld more than once, including during proceedings overseen by the Cricket Discipline Committee.”We vehemently disagree that this is ‘just banter’ and believe that any debate in that regard should stop immediately. Racism isn’t banter.”In a wide-ranging interview, Graves also addressed Yorkshire’s financial situation, following his decision to withdraw from the running to return as Lord Kamlesh Patel’s successor as chair. In 2002, Graves bailed the club out with a multimillion-pound loan, of which some £14.9 million is still owed to the Graves Family Trust. The club is due to repay £500,000 in October, with the rest due for repayment next year, and Graves had offered to help restructure that debt in return for a second stint as chair.Last week, however, he withdrew his candidacy after criticising the length of time the board had taken to nominate a successor to Lord Patel, who stepped down in March.”As far as I know [Yorkshire] are going to run out of liquid cash in September time,” Graves said. “If [a buyer or investor] doesn’t [come in], presumably the only way forward for them is to go into administration.”And when that happens – and I hope it doesn’t happen – if they go into administration, then the administrator will have to talk to the trustees of the trust, because the trust has got first legal charge over the ground.”In response, Yorkshire’s board insisted that the club was conducting “many positive conversations” around investment – including, it is believed, with the former owner of Newcastle United, Mike Ashley, and the Saudi Arabia national investment fund.A board statement said: “The financial security of Yorkshire County Cricket Club is our number one priority and we are continuing many positive conversations around investment from various sources. Our guiding principle is that Yorkshire will remain a members’ co-operative, as it has been for 160 years. The club is not for sale and we have turned down several offers to buy the club outright.”We reiterate that at no point did Colin Graves make a clearly defined, tangible offer that the board was able to consider formally, unlike other interested parties involved in the refinance process. His proposals include securing an extension on repayment of loans from the Graves Trusts, which he also says he has no control over, and working with a number of investors to get the club back on an even keel. This is not a refinancing solution that we can stand behind or would pass any financial rigour.”Furthermore, Colin’s stipulation that he would require full control of the board and executive in the event of returning to the club as chair runs contrary to best practice governance requirements set out in the County Governance Code which were agreed by all counties in 2019.”We note Colin’s position that he was not aware of, or witness to, any racism at Yorkshire and that there existed only “banter”. As a Board, we maintain that we needed to accept and take responsibility for the cultural issues which allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to go unchallenged, and we have accepted four amended charges from the Cricket Discipline Commission.”We remain entirely focused on securing the short- and long-term future of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and making it a welcoming club for everyone”.The ECB added: “Yorkshire is of huge importance to cricket in England and Wales with a deep history and an ability to inspire and connect all cricket fans. They are currently working hard to resolve their financial and cultural challenges and the club, and its new management, have our full support.”

According to the Sporting Lisbon frontman, who is attracting serious attention this summer, could now be on his way to the Premier League with the Red Devils making a strong case for his signature. A significant overhaul in United's financial structure has freed up funds for investment, and the club appears set to challenge Arsenal for Gyokeres, who was previously more closely linked with a move to North London.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United’s latest quarterly financial statements have revealed a marked reduction in operational spending, trimming down by £41.6 million ($56.29m) to £162.1m ($219m). These savings come as part of a wider efficiency drive led by Ratcliffe, whose INEOS-led group has taken the reins of football operations at the club. Despite the club’s enormous financial burden, notably the eye-watering £1.2 billion spent servicing debt accrued during the Glazer family's ownership, the cost-cutting measures have allowed United to realign their spending with long-term sustainability in mind.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal have had their sights set on Gyokeres for some time, but with their attention also drawn to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United sense an opportunity to make their move. The striker has a release clause set at £85m ($115m), but sources suggest that Sporting would be willing to consider offers in the region of £60m ($81.19m), a figure United could now realistically meet given their reduced expenses and recalibrated financial priorities.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Gyokeres isn’t the only name on United’s summer wishlist. The club has already sealed a £62.5m ($82.5m) agreement for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and are believed to be deep in talks with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo in a deal worth around £55m ($74.5m). These moves point to a busy window ahead as Ruben Amorim seeks to rejig a squad that has grossly underperformed in recent seasons.

Alastair Cook shapes to save match for Essex with unbeaten 87

Former England captain does what he’s been doing for two decades to counter Matthew Montgomery’s 177

Nottingham on the third Saturday morning in May. Green buses – 4, 6 and 9 – proud and prompt to the minute, rumble over the Trent Bridge, where the inn has been trading for hours. There is a quiet busyness about the streets, an air of incipience. So it seemed on this leisured day when the East Midlands began to take leave of spring. Canyoned clouds drifted against a silver-blue sky and the shorts worn on the middle terrace at the Radcliffe Road End suggested more than a mulish determination to spite the climate.Red shirts flecked the white-painted stands inside the cricket ground. We were near the very last hurrah of the football season – and therefore five minutes away from the very first hurrah of the next. Some folk were taking in a few hours’ cricket before going to the City Ground, where mighty Arsenal were the visitors. In the streets around Colwick Road the fast food joints were setting up for a lively afternoon and evening. Fat and fat profits.Related

And amid this activity, this skelter to capture the moment, a tall, slim figure would also soon be going about his business, which was that of scoring runs and saving a game either for Essex or England. It is what Alastair Cook has been doing for two decades now and it still brings him satisfaction. His batting today was certainly not without fault; he was put down twice in the slips before he’d reached 30, though neither chance was easy, and he sometimes seemed in a tangle when Liam Patterson-White bowled into the footholes. But he is 87 not out and if the job of saving the game has not yet been done with ease, the loss of Nick Browne, leg before to Lyndon James, is the only damage suffered. And in a way, Cook’s achievement in the second innings was the more admirable because he was less fluent today than when he made 72 on Thursday. Only 12 of his first 37 runs came in boundaries and two of those cover-driven fours off Dane Paterson sandwiched a fiery chance to second slip where Calvin Harrison, both hands above his head, could not cling on. Otherwise, there were the jabs down that gave Cook singles to backward point and the little deflections to the on side that gave him a few more. His fifth four, a drive through cover-point, brought him to his 122nd first-class fifty, although only his third at Trent Bridge. The achievement drew applause but the stroke was played against the growing tumult on the Radcliffe Road, where another crowd grew and steamed and prepared for manic partisanship.Even though he knows to celebrate, Alastair Cook does not do manic. Excitable is a rarely allowed indulgence. He takes the tiny defeats that come along in most long innings and is thankful one of them has not sent him back to the pavilion. In company with his captain, Tom Westley, with whom he had put on an unbroken 137 by close of play, he wore Nottinghamshire’s bowlers down on the third evening of this game and thereby exposed the inadequacy of his own side’s 298 in the first innings.Steven Mullaney’s fields became funky and merely hopeful: two short-midwickets, one short-cover and no slip to Westley, who ended the day with a pleasant unbeaten 70 of his own. Stuart Broad and Ben Hutton, whom one might have thought two of their side’s biggest threats, bowled eight overs apiece. It will take a lot for either side to win this game tomorrow and there is no need for a contrived finish. There is though, the probability that Cook will make a century on this ground for the first time in his career. It will be another tick on a career record that is littered with them.Matthew Montgomery made his first hundred of the season•Getty Images

And maybe we had an inkling how things might go during a morning of brief appearances and carefree strokeplay, a curious counterpoint to all that Cook represents. None of the last six in Nottinghamshire’s order batted longer than Patterson-White, who stodged around for 51 minutes before a crabbed poke, neither Catholic nor Protestant, edged a catch to Simon Harmer at slip off Jamie Porter. By contrast, Jamie Harrison hit seven varied boundaries in his 36-ball 31 and everyone else showed willing, especially Stuart Broad, who wiped Harmer towards West Bridgford for a six and a four before Matt Critchley picked up the last of his three cheap wickets. At the other end, Matthew Montgomery batted with all the confidence of a chap who looks up at the scoreboard before play starts and sees three figures against his name. Montgomery stroked six more boundaries today before falling leg before when attempting to reverse-sweep a full-length ball from Critchley. He was one short of his career-best 178 but one doubts he’ll need counselling.
