Jonathan Trott: Afghanistan batters have adapted to pace of ODIs

Head coach Jonathan Trott breaks down the reasons behind the change in Afghanistan’s batting approach

Ashish Pant02-Nov-2023Soaking up pressure and adapting their T20 skills to the pace of ODIs are the reasons for Afghanistan’s batting success at the World Cup, according to their head coach Jonathan Trott ahead of a crucial game against Netherlands in Lucknow.Coming into the tournament, Afghanistan’s middle order had the lowest average of all Full Member nations in ODIs since the start of 2021 – 26.44. That number has gone up to 36.93 in the World Cup, the fifth best in the tournament.Related

Afghanistan turn to careful cricket for unprecedented success

“I think it’s a case more of just being better all-around, and thinking more about your all-around game,” Trott said in Lucknow on Friday. “Afghanistan [players] naturally grow up playing a lot more T20 cricket than any other format, so the skills for T20 are there. It’s about adding to that sort of base of T20 skills. As you see, 50-over cricket is a long time and you have to be able to, I think, ride the sort of ebbs, and flows of a game.”While openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have been scoring consistently, it hasn’t gone bust when they have not fired. In their previous game against Sri Lanka, Gurbaz fell for a four-ball duck but Rahmat Shah stepped up and had half-century stands with Ibrahim and Hashmatullah Shahidi, who in turn put on 111 with Azmatullah Omarzai to finish the chase.”The thing I’m really happy about from the last game is we lost a wicket in the first over and Rahmat Shah was able to go into No. 3 and soak up that pressure but still kept scoring at a good tempo,” Trott said. “That shows the ability to soak up pressure at times, what you have to do in 50-over cricket, but also then accelerate at certain times.”Rahmat Shah has been unfazed even when Afghanistan have lost an early wicket•AFP/Getty ImagesTrott also stressed on the importance of the batters who are in to stay till the end and finish the job, especially while chasing.”I think when chasing those targets, we saw just what is possible if you have a good solid start and you have batsmen in the last ten overs,” he said. “That’s happened for us, but it’s also happened against us in games where it’s been difficult to stop the opposition with set batters in the last ten overs.”Having that sort of vision, knowing that you can score quickly towards the back end of games, I think that’s the pennies we’re starting to see drop with the players.”Afghanistan have managed to walk the talk, especially in their previous two games, against Pakistan and Sri Lanka where they chased down targets of 283 and 242 with ease.”Obviously, there’s a difference between talking about it and actually going out and doing it. And we’re seeing players go out and do it now,” Trott said. “We’ve spoken a lot about it and worked really hard to try and achieve it, so it’s nice to see the players do well and have a smile on the face when they’re there batting at the end of the game, having chased in the last two games and won.”

Top Story: Klaasen sends England’s title-defence hopes spiralling

Heinrich Klaasen crumpled to his haunches in a dripping mess after every shot. In between whiles, he flayed England’s bowlers for a 61-ball century to set up an emphatic South Africa victory at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The brutality of Klaasen’s 109 from just 67 balls all told matched the harshness of the heat and humidity which had also left England bowler David Willey cramping throughout South Africa’s innings, ending on 399 for 7 and requiring the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history. England capitulated instead, crashing to 170 all out in 22 overs and suffering their heaviest ODI defeat.Click here for the full report

Match analysis: Classy Klaasen digs deep to make Wankhede his Colosseum

Heinrich Klaasen brought up his maiden World Cup ton off 61 balls•Associated Press

Heinrich Klaasen was so spent by the time he faced his 61st delivery, the one he pulled wide of fine leg to bring up his fourth ODI hundred, that almost immediately after he raised his bat in celebration and screamed, his knees gave way and he ended up in a squat. His face contorted between unbridled exhilaration expressed directly at Mark Wood, to ultimate exhaustion and eventually to the realisation of the unquestionable enormity of the moment: this was not just his first century at a World Cup, it was a century against the defending champions in a match South Africa earmarked as must-win after their chastening defeat to Netherlands earlier in the week.As the emotions sunk in, Klaasen composed himself, and acknowledged his team-mates and the crowd, which included his wife and daughter, and the heavens. Then, he went straight to Wood to apologise, several times. Wood settled on a fist-bump or three and Klaasen could have his moment back but only until the next wave of weariness set in. Then it was back onto his haunches to try to conserve the energy to bat to the end, and summon the reserves to keep finding the boundary. It’s a small ground but today it felt like a cauldron and Klaasen had to both absorb and transfer the heat.Read the full analysis from Firdose Moonda in Mumbai

What’s gone wrong for England?

Match report: Sri Lanka overcome Engelbrecht-led resistance to finally open their account

An unbeaten 91 from Sadeera Samarawickrama shepherded home a tricky chase as Sri Lanka overcame a resilient Dutch outfit and finally got points on the board. The result means Sri Lanka join Afghanistan, Netherlands, Bangladesh and England on two points after four games; they did however go past Afghanistan on net run rate – before England plummeted later in the evening – to move off the very bottom of the table.Set a target of 263, the chase was built around key partnerships – the first a counter-attacking 30-ball 34 between Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, to recover from the early loss of Kusal Perera, followed by more substantial stands of 52, 77 and 76 – with Samarawickrama a key cog throughout.Click here for the full report

Maharoof: The new-ball spell of Madushanka and Rajitha set up the win

It’s the 47th over of Netherlands’ innings. Logan van Beek, running between the wickets, is nowhere near safety and has resigned to fate. Substitute fielder Dunith Wellalage flicks the throw from cover to Chamika Karunaratne, who botches a simple run out chance at the bowler’s end. Van Beek gets to his maiden ODI half-century.Then in the penultimate over, van Beek heaves Kasun Rajitha’s slower ball to the deep midwicket. Charith Asalanka covers some ground first before throwing himself full stretch on the edge of the boundary. It was towards the shorter side and momentum could’ve taken it over, but for Asalanka’s athleticism and balance.Read the full analysis from Shashank Kishore in Lucknow

Andrew Flintoff, Graeme Swann take up mentor roles for England Lions training camp

England greats join camp heavy on spinners and allrounders, following success of summer involvement

Vithushan Ehantharajah09-Nov-2023Andrew Flintoff and Graeme Swann will reprise their mentorship roles with the ECB as part of the England Lions’ upcoming training camp in the United Arab Emirates.Flintoff and Swann, regarded as two of the country’s most talismanic cricketers, were both in attendance at Loughborough on Thursday, working with the 20-strong playing group that will fly out on November 17 for a three-week trip, primarily focussing on red-ball skills. It is a distinctly green-tinged party, with 10 players involved in the programme for the first time, and skewed towards spinners and all-rounders, making the presence of the two modern greats in those roles all the more valuable. Both Flintoff and Swann have been involved with the England pathway over the last 12 months. Flintoff recently completed an unpaid stint with the ODI squad during their series against Ireland, presenting fellow Lancastrian Tom Hartley with his maiden international cap in Nottingham. The series was Flintoff’s first public appearance since a serious car crash while filming an episode of Top Gear last December. He has since been compensated a reported £9 million by the BBC.The hero of the 2005 Ashes, who scored 3,845 runs and took 226 wickets across 79 Tests, has also worked with the Under-19s, and attended Ashes Tests during the 2023 summer alongside close friend Rob Key, England’s managing director. Key has been integral to Flintoff’s return to the game.Swann, who retired in 2013 as England’s leading off-spinner with 255 dismissals at an average of 29.96, accompanied the corresponding Lions tour in 2022. He was subsequently drafted as a coach for their tour of Sri Lanka at the start of this year. His input, both around spin and tactics, was such that the ECB have been keen to get him more involved between his existing commitments as a commentator and spin coach of Trent Rockets in the men’s Hundred. The pair will assist a coaching team headed by men’s elite bowling coach Neil Kileen, alongside Jim Troughton (Surrey) and Paul Tweddle (Somerset). Performance director Mo Bobat, who will be in the UAE for the duration of the trip ahead of leaving the ECB in February to take up a director of cricket post at Royal Challengers Bangalore, lauded the continued involvement of Flintoff and Swann.”He’s got a huge passion for helping people,” Bobat said of Flintoff. “He is going through a bit of a journey himself. He wants to give back to the game. He has a lot to offer, and there is a lot of energy and enthusiasm from him, and we have a desire to get him involved. It’s not often you get players of his calibre and experience wanting to get involved as proactively as he does. You have to really take that seriously.Swann and Flintoff (alongside Darren Maddy and Matt Windows) were contemporaries of Rob Key (right) during their playing days, including a tour of Zimbabwe in 1999•Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images”We got him around the U19s, and he was brilliant with them. We got him around the England lads, which I know Jos [Buttler] and Motty [white-ball head coach Matthew Mott] really enjoyed. I started speaking to him in the summer, saying I’d love you to come on this camp, and he said he’d love to.”At the moment, we have agreed that he will come for the whole camp, but he’s in demand and we will see. He also has a few medical things he is still working through which we have to be respectful of. The plan is that he’s there for the full camp.”We had Swanny with us last winter and he was amazing. He was even better than I thought he was going to be around the group – brilliant tactically, brilliant mentoring the spinners, great for the captains. He’s trying to bring that into the environment, and I’m sure Fred will be similar from what I’ve experienced of him so far from this summer.”Test players not involved in the ODI World Cup will also feature. Seamers James Anderson and Ollie Robinson will drop in, while wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who was dropped this summer, will be with the Lions for the duration until December 7. Ollie Pope (shoulder) and Jack Leach (back) will also travel out to continue their rehabilitation from injuries sustained last season. Brendon McCullum will also be in attendance for a portion of the tour, accompanied by a handful of Test coaches along with Key, and will work separately with the Test group while he is out there. It will also be an opportunity for McCullum to run the rule over some of the Lions contingent ahead of the five-match series in India which commences in January. While quicks Matthew Potts and Josh Tongue and legspinner Rehan Ahmed are known quantities as far as Test cricket is concerned, it could present an opportunity for Hartley to impress. The tall left-arm spinner has been earmarked for this Test tour and, at the very least, will be in India on a Lions tour due to run parallel with the main event. That particular group will feature more senior fringe players playing a two-day warm-up followed by three four-day matches against India A – ideally first-class – pending confirmation from the BCCI.It is also likely some players will be pulled away from the Lions training camp for the white-ball tour of West Indies, which begins on December 3. England’s dire performance in the ongoing World Cup has put the onus on using the eight-match tour – three ODIs and five T20Is – as a chance to blood the next generation.Rehan, Potts, Tongue, Hartley and Hampshire’s young quick John Turner could be in contention. Brydon Carse, who has not featured for England since being drafted into the World Cup squad as an injury replacement for Reece Topley, has been stood down from attending the UAE camp, given what lies ahead.

Lyon poised to sign with Lancashire after injury layoff provides new goals

Nathan Lyon is poised to sign a deal to play a full County Championship season with Lancashire next year where he will team up with long-time rival Jimmy Anderson and has reiterated his desire to continue to play Test cricket until the 2027 Ashes series in England.Lyon is also aiming to play in the BBL for his new club Melbourne Renegades against his old side Sydney Sixers, who he said “basically sacked him”, ahead of his Test return against Pakistan in mid-December.Lyon, 35, made a successful return to Sheffield Shield cricket over the weekend in New South Wales’ loss to Victoria at the MCG. Lyon bowled 36 overs across two innings in the match and returned figures of 1 for 81 on a pitch that favoured the seam bowlers.Related

Australia’s greatest-ever Test offspinner had not played a first-class game since he tore his calf badly during the second Test of the Ashes series at Lord’s in late June. Australia have seven Tests this summer against Pakistan and West Indies at home and New Zealand away but do not have another series scheduled between mid-March 2024 and the following home summer where they will host India in a five-match series. It presents an opportunity for Australia’s Test specialists to play county cricket with Scott Boland already signed to play with Durham. Lyon confirmed he has a contract on the table from Lancashire, which was first reported by the UK’s , and he is likely to sign this week.”There’s an offer on the table,” Lyon said at a cricket clinic in Melbourne on Monday. “I really wanted to see how this week went. It all went really well. So that’s a conversation when I get home with my wife tomorrow night. [We’ll] have a chat about heading over there. It’s looking pretty good that I’ll head over to Lancs hopefully, we’ll dot all the i’s, cross all the t’s, get that signed and head over there to play with Jimmy Anderson which will be good.Nathan Lyon played four games for Worcestershire in 2017•Getty Images

“At this stage, it’s a full season [contract] but there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge. But my intentions are to go over, play county cricket and go there and keep learning.”Lyon was set to do a stint in county cricket earlier this year ahead of the World Test Championship final and the Ashes but opted to remain at home. He played four matches with Worcestershire in 2017.His serious calf injury was a huge blow to Australia in the Ashes and he has admitted it took him to some dark places personally when he watched the remainder of the series from home in Sydney. But the injury has strengthened his resolve to continue playing Test cricket with the next away tours of India and England in 2027 clear targets in his mind.”It’s probably extended [my career], to be honest with you,” Lyon said. “I’ve always said I wanted to win in India and England. Haven’t been able to do that. So, it looks like we’ve got to go again.”Lyon is keen to play as much cricket as he can between now and then. He is scheduled to play two more Shield games for New South Wales against Western Australia and Tasmania before the Test summer begins, both at the SCG, but he will rest from the trip to Hobart to play Tasmania in between. He is also keen to make his BBL debut for Renegades on December 8 against Sixers at the SCG, just a day before the Test players are due to head to Perth to prepare for the first home Test of the summer against Pakistan at Perth Stadium starting on December 14.”That’s my plan,” Lyon said. “I haven’t spoken to Cricket Australia or the Renegades yet but my plan is to be available for selection. I’m looking forward to joining the Renegades. I feel like we’re getting all the old boys back together with Sids [Peter Siddle], and Sos [Shaun Marsh] and Finchy [Aaron Finch] and myself.Nathan Lyon has joined Melbourne Renegades in BBL after previously playing at Sydney Sixers•Getty Images

“But having someone like Quinton de Kock, who I absolutely idolised playing against, I think he’s exceptional and you can see what he’s doing for South Africa. It’s pretty special. I’m looking forward to it.”Lyon has been watching the ODI World Cup but said he is following as a fan and is not waiting by the phone after volunteering his services to coach Andrew McDonald prior to the tournament when Ashton Agar was ruled out with injury. He took great delight in seeing England lose to India overnight.”Absolutely loved it,” Lyon said. “It’s international cricket. I respect them as people. I think they’re very nice people. But when it comes to cricket, what do you want me to say?”

Mumtaz: Panic should have set in for Pakistan during the Asia Cup

After seven defeats to Pakistan in ODIs, Afghanistan finally got one back, in Chennai on Monday. While Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, who scored the winning run, said the win “tastes sweet”, veteran allrounder Mohammad Nabi said this win was bigger than the one against England earlier in the tournament.”This win tastes nice. The way we chased was very professional,” Shahidi said at the post-game presentation ceremony. “The quality cricket we are playing for the last couple of years… the belief was there when we were playing Asia Cup also. At the start of the tournament, I said we want to make this tournament historic for our country’s people. First was England, today Pakistan, and looking forward for the other games.Nabi was thrilled to finally get a win over Pakistan in the format. “It’s a big moment for the whole team, but also whole Afghanistan as well,” he said. “We have been waiting for the last 10-12 years. “It’s a big achievement for the guys. From the last three months, we’ve been working very hard. We played a series against Pakistan, then Asia Cup, and then come here to the World Cup. It’s a lovely moment today. We beat England as well, and now Pakistan. The team is confident now. And the team knows if we score around 280-290 on this kind of surface, it’s defendable and chaseable as well.”I think this is the favourite win, against Pakistan, because [earlier] in the last moments, we used to lose the game [to Pakistan]. Now the way Ibrahim [Zadran] and[[Rahmanullah] Gurbaz started the game, it was a fantastic start. The momentum from that, Rahmat Shah and the captain gave a lovely partnership.”We play against them the first game in 2014 [2012]. Then Asia Cup, then 2015 World Cup [they didn’t play each other in that tournament], then again Asia Cup, T20 World Cup and 2019 World Cup… a lot of close games. And this is a fantastic moment.”Half-centuries from Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam helped Pakistan post 282 in Chennai but a 130-run opening partnership between Ibrahim and Gurbaz laid the platform for Afghanistan’s chase, which was then completed by Rahmat and Shahidi without any hiccups.1:21

Has Noor Ahmad done enough to be a regular in the first XI?

Ibrahim earned the Player-of-the-Match award for his assured 87 in the chase, putting on big partnerships with first Gurbaz and then Rahmat. In the eyes of the adjuticators, that topped Noor Ahmad’s 3 for 49, the wickets those of Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam.”Thankful that I performed well in this kind of big event,” Ibrahim said after the match. “I would say I wanted to play with a positive intent, with a positive mindset, so that’s why I did it.”He credited his long history of playing with Gurbaz for giving Afghanistan solid starts with the bat at the World Cup so far – this was the fourth 100-plus partnership between the two, all of them coming in 2023.”Many times Gurbaz and me, we have done a brilliant partnership together,” he said. “Few times, not [just] today. We have played a lot of cricket together, right from the Under-16 days. We have a good communication while batting.”

Real Madrid player ratings vs. Juventus: Trent Alexander-Arnold gets up and running – ex-Liverpool ace grabs his first assist as Los Blancos book spot in Club World Cup quarters

Xabi Alonso's side clinched a spot in the last eight with a narrow victory over the Italian giants.

Gonzalo Garcia scored the only goal and Trent Alexander-Arnold notched his first assist for Real Madrid as Los Blancos edged Juventus to book a spot in the Club World Cup quarter-final. Xabi Alonso's side turned a poor first half into a comprehensive second, and were good value for their win – even if they were far from dominant.

Juventus had the better of the play early on. Randal Kolo Muani came close, dinking over from close range. Kenan Yildiz also threatened, his swerving effort evading the post by inches. Jude Bellingham provided the first good look for Los Blancos, but saw his poke cleared off the line. Federico Valverde, too, made an impact with a 30-yard strike that forced a fine save out of the goalkeeper.

Los Blancos eventually took the lead in the second half – they were good value for it, too. Alexander-Arnold set it up with a fine cross into the area, which Garcia met dutifully. Arda Guler could have made it two after 70 minutes, but Michele Di Gregorio denied his fizzing volley following a lovely flowing Madrid move.

They lost their flow a bit after Mbappe came on. The Frenchman missed the entire group stage due to injury, and didn't quite jell with the rest of the Madrid attack in his return. Still, they did enough to run out deserved 1-0 winners. There will be tougher challenges to come, but it has been a good start to the Alonso era.

Allowed Randal Kolo Muani to run through a couple of times and some of his positioning wasn't great.

    Dean Huijsen (8/10):

Another excellent performance at the back. Won everything, distributed well.

    Midfield

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (6/10):

Grabbed his first assist in a Madrid shirt, but still a little suspect at the back.

    Federico Valverde (7/10):

Stung the keeper's palms with a strong effort. Had a couple more attempts denied. The driving force behind everything.

    Arda Guler (7/10):

A bit quiet in the first half, but much more effective after the break, and was part of the reason Madrid took control.

    Jude Bellingham (6/10):

Should have scored in the first half, and held onto the ball a bit too long in the second. Still finding his feet in this system.

    Fran Garcia (6/10):

Madrid were quieter down his side, but he still put in plenty of leg work.

    Attack

    Gonzalo Garcia (8/10):

Scored a really nice goal, ran tirelessly. Shame that this will be his last start now that Mbappe is back.

    Vinicius Jr (6/10):

A bit mixed, all said. Dangerous on the break, but lacked quality in front of goal.

    Subs & Manager

    Kylian Mbappe (5/10):

Drifted out to the left when he was really supposed to stay central. Will need time to figure out the right movements.

    Luka Modric (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Dani Ceballos (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Xabi Alonso (7/10):

Back to his preferred 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation, and things looked pretty good. Alexander-Arnold grabbed his first assist, and Madrid were in control. Encouraging all round – other than Mbappe's poor cameo.
