USMNT transfers: Tim Weah reportedly close to Marseille move, Middlesbrough interested in Max Arfsten, Napoli reignite Yunus Musah pursuit

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

The European summer transfer window has roughly four weeks remaining, and the U.S. men's national team will report in roughly five weeks for a pair of international friendlies. Across the past few weeks, there have been several transfer developments for players with high hopes for the 2026 World Cup.

Defender Max Arfsten, a breakout star at the Gold Cup, is the subject of transfer interest in both France and England, and could depart MLS side Columbus Crew this summer. Midfielder Yunus Musah is back on the radar of Napoli, with a move from AC Milan reportedly heating up after interest surfaced in June. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund are now contemplating the effects of a permanent Cole Campbell departure, and a move away could be a difficult task suddenly.

Then, it appears Tim Weah's months-long transfer saga with Juventus might finally be over. The have reportedly agreed to sell him to Marseille in France on a permanent transfer.

Columbus Crew defender Max Arfsten, a breakout performer at the 2025 Gold Cup, has been the subject of interest from Toulouse in France, according to L'Equipe. However, now report that English Championship side Middlesbrough are now looking to enter the race for his signature, and that could ultimately lead to a bidding war over the fullback's services.

Toulouse currently roster fellow U.S. international Mark McKenzie, while Middlesbrough also have one in midfielder Aidan Morris.

The Ligue 1 side approached Columbus in June with an offer, but were turned down, and reportedly approached Columbus with a near $2 million offer last week. Middlesbrough, though, are set to offer nearly $3 million for Arfsten, and seem to be in the lead for his signature at the moment.

It remains to be seen where Arfsten moves to this Europe, but he has multiple suitors now contending for his signature.

After a summer of back-and-forth between Juventus, Weah's camp, and clubs around Europe, it appears the winger has found a new club in Marseille, according to Fabrizio Romano.

However, it's been a whirlwind summer.

In July, it was reported that Nottingham Forest had agreed a fee with Juventus for Weah, but he rejected the approach from the Premier League side, and instead, Romano reported that Weah and Marseille shared mutual interest, and that the French club was exploring a deal.

However, Juventus were playing hardball with the Ligue 1 side over agreeing on a fee initially, prompting Weah's agent, Badou Sambague, to make a statement over the matter. He claimed that Juventus' sporting department is "creating problems" and that the Serie A side was holding out for a move to the Premier League – a transfer that they'll "never approve."

It's yet to be official, but all signs point to Weah joining the ranks of Roberto De Zerbi's men.

Getty ImagesBVB's Campbell dilemma

Borussia Dortmund have a big decision to make with Cole Campbell this summer. The U.S. youth international has climbed through the youth ranks of the Bundesliga outfit, but where he goes from here is now up to the club.

Reports surfaced earlier in the window that Stuttgart were keen to secure the 19-year-old's signature, with a permanent transfer being discussed, but now Dortmund are unsure of letting him go, according to . The are now contemplating only letting Campbell go on loan, as a replacement winger could cost them a hefty fee ahead of the season. If he were to depart the club permanently, the report added that Dortmund are now looking to add a buy-back clause into the contract as well.

In the 2024-25 season, Campbell made four Bundesliga appearances, one substitute cameo in the UEFA Champions League, and appeared in one match in the DFB-Pokal for Dortmund. He also traveled with them for the Club World Cup. With BVB II, who compete in the third tier of German football, Campbell made 11 domestic league appearances, scoring twice and recording one assist.

In November, the 19-year-old sat down with GOAL for an exclusive interview, where he shared that U.S. Soccer "believes" in his abilities. He has lofty goals with the national team, but he needs regular playing time this upcoming campaign to achieve them.

Getty ImagesNapoli back in for Musah?

In June, it was reported that Antonio Conte's Napoli were interested in Musah, but no bid came from the club for the AC Milan midfielder. Now, though, with over a month in between reports, it seems that the have reignited their interest in the 22-year-old.

Neapolitan newspaper via MilanPress, reports that Napoli's hierarchy of president Aurelio De Laurentiis, manager Antonio Conte, and sporting director Giovanni Manna held a transfer market meeting in Ischia, where they discussed bringing Musah into the fold to compete for their midfield.

Conte believes Musah will be the ideal midfielder to back up André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, while pushing him for regular minutes.

Musah, meanwhile, has been training and competing in matches across the preseason with AC Milan. Manager Max Allegri has played him three times this summer, and Musah also scored once in a 9-0 victory over Perth Glory in Australia.

O jogo, no entanto, acabou ficando no empate e decepcionando quase 40 mil palmeirenses.

E agora?

Roderick hundred lifts Worcestershire on return to action

A Gareth Roderick century left Worcestershire in a commanding position after day one of their Vitality County Championship with Kent at Canterbury. The visitors were 308 for 5 at stumps, with Roderick hitting 117 from 281 balls, after the former Kent 2nd XI player Kashif Ali had given them a platform with 72. Adam Hose was unbeaten on 50 at stumps, reaching his half-century with a single off Nathan Gilchrist in the final over of the day.Matt Parkinson took 2 for 79, but it was largely a torpid day in the field for Kent, who struggled to make anything happen on a benign pitch until Joey Evison claimed late two wickets to end the day with figures of 2 for 39.The day began in sombre fashion, with an emotive minute’s applause for Worcestershire’s Josh Baker, who died last week at the age of just 20. Both teams wore black armbands and the flags flew at half mast over the Frank Woolley Stand.A crowd of over 1000 made the most of the first genuinely warm day of the season at the Spitfire Ground and to no one’s surprise the visitors chose to bat after winning the toss.Players took part a minute’s applause in memory of Josh Baker•Getty Images

Kent’s new overseas signing Beyers Swanepoel generated some early swing, but the hosts’ only victim during the morning session was Jake Libby, who had looked lively on his way to 19 until he was lbw to a Wes Agar delivery so plumb he turned and walked off before the umpire even had time to raise his finger. It was 94 for 1 at lunch and although Kent weren’t bowling badly, Roderick and Kashif looked largely untroubled. They put on 136 for the second wicket, until the latter began to look jittery against Parkinson, eventually nicking him to keeper Harry Finch.Brett D’Oliveira got a start, but having almost nicked Parkinson to Daniel Bell-Drummond at the start of the 61st over he went a couple of deliveries later, snared by the Kent captain at first slip for 18.It was 210 for 3 at tea, but if the D’Oliveira wicket had briefly revived Kent’s hopes, they faded during the evening as Hose joined Roderick for a partnership of 102 that seriously dented home morale.Roderick drove Agar through cow corner to reach 100 but Evison belatedly gave a dwindling number of home supporters something to smile about when he sent his off stump cart-wheeling, before getting the night-watcher Joe Leach lbw for 1 at the end of the penultimate over.

Kent sign Sheffield Shield winner Stobo as overseas cover

West Australian is club’s fourth overseas seamer competing for two spots

ESPNcricinfo staff01-May-2024Kent have signed Charlie Stobo, a Sheffield Shield-winning seamer with Western Australia, as overseas fast-bowling cover for Wes Agar, Xavier Bartlett and Beyers Swanepoel.Stobo, 29, has taken 55 first-class wickets at 24.98 and has signed a deal from May 20 until September 16 that covers all formats of the game. The ECB changed its regulations last year to allow counties to register up to four overseas players simultaneously, with two permitted in the playing XI in each of the County Championship, Metro Bank Cup and Vitality Blast. While Stobo is uncapped at international level and yet to make his T20 debut, ESPNcricinfo understands that he qualifies to play professionally in the UK thanks to an ancestry visa.Kent were blind-sided shortly before the start of the season when Cricket Australia changed the conditions of Bartlett’s No-Objection Certificate, blocking him from featuring in the Championship. They have since made two signings to help them cover for his absence, with South African seamer Swanepoel due to join the squad ahead of their Championship match away at Lancashire on Friday.Related

Swanepoel is expected to be available across formats until the end of the season in late September.”We’ve been keeping a track on Charlie for a while now and we’re very pleased that we’ve been able to get him on board for a substantial part of our season,” Simon Cook, Kent’s director of cricket, said.”We’ve identified that he has the attributes that will be successful at Canterbury and will add to our squad depth and give us the ability to rotate players, especially bowlers, to better manage their workloads and get the optimum out of everybody.”Stobo said he was excited to join his compatriots at Kent. “I’m looking forward to linking up with a few lads that I know already, join a bit of an Aussie takeover with Wes Agar already there and Xavier Bartlett set to join soon, and being a part of a squad with a lot of talent. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to play for Kent, which is an exciting new challenge for me.”Kent said in a statement that both Stobo and Swanepoel will be available for their Metro Bank Cup campaign, which starts in late July.

They are determined to deliver Premier League football at some stage, with more money being invested in the summer of 2025 as transfer records continue to be smashed at SToK Racecourse. Parkinson is aware of the need to deliver on expectations.

DID YOU KNOW?

It has been suggested that he could be moved on at some stage, as Reynolds and McElhenney draft in someone more versed in the demands of top-flight competition, and Gerrard may come into the frame if a prominent managerial post opens up.

The ex-Liverpool and England captain has flopped in his last two roles at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, but he oversaw Scottish Premiership title glory at Rangers and is being tipped to tread a similar path to former Three Lions colleague Frank Lampard – who is now at Coventry.

Ex-Wrexham forward Matt Jansen has told : “I don’t think Gerrard has had a terrible run. He did well at Rangers, then went to Villa and they were mid-table. It’s just that Unai Emery’s done so well since.

“Gerrard’s been out in the Middle East, but I think he’ll want to come back and do what Frank’s done, take a Championship club with ambition and one that has a real chance of getting promoted.

“If Wrexham struggle, that could be a good fit for him. He’d definitely have the backing, and with his contacts, I’m sure he could attract some big-name players too.”

'I was left with no choice' – Alvaro Morata says he was forced to give up his salary and blasts Galatasaray as striker gives 'real explanation' behind transfer feud

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After his contract was officially terminated at Galatasaray, Morata took to social media and slammed the Super Lig outfit for not fulfilling certain commitments. The Turkish club initially refused to let him leave this summer despite him having no place in their first-team plans for the upcoming season before they finally relinquished and agreed to release him after intervention from Milan and Como.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Morata joined Galatasaray on loan in February and his contract, which was supposed to end next January, had a buy option of €8 million. After failing to have much of an impact in Turkey, Morata chose to join Como this summer, but the Turkish club demanded a €10m fee as compensation. Milan finally reached an agreement with Galatasaray that will see the Serie A side pay €3m plus potential bonuses, thus terminating the loan. Como, meanwhile, will need to pay €10m to Milan.

  • WHAT MORATA SAID

With the saga now behind him, Morata took to Instagram to criticise Galatasaray, saying: "Until the very end, the commitments made were not honoured, to the point where I was left with no choice but to forgo part of my salary and other contractual rights I had already earned through my work (the figure published is not accurate). For me, in life and in work, there are principles that should never be broken, such as respect for each person’s rights. Failing to recognize and compensate what has been earned is, to me, unacceptable and contrary to the values of fairness and professionalism I believe in. I know these matters are often not spoken about openly, but I believe it is right to give the fans the real explanation of what happened. You and the city of Istanbul will always remain in my heart, and I wish you the very best, today and in the future."
