Ex-CEO shares damning Celtic boardroom claim amid Brendan Rodgers doubt

With Brendan Rodgers’ future still up in the air, a fresh update has dropped regarding the situation and Celtic’s board, courtesy of an ex-CEO.

Rodgers delighted after dramatic Celtic win

The Hoops left it very late to win 2-1 away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, with new signing Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers couldn’t hide his delight at the result, as Celtic’s winning mentality shone through, like it so often does.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s been a long two weeks, so to get back out on to the football field – and this is always a tough game here – I’m so pleased for the players.“We weren’t quite in the right fluidity in the first-half. We got into some good areas but we weren’t feeding the wide guys well enough. But I thought in the second half we were much better.

“We started the half really well, got in front, and we had control of the game and had other good chances. They made some really good blocks.

“At 1-0 it can always be in the balance, no matter how much dominance you have, and we got punished from a corner and then they had a wee bit of momentum then with not so long to go. But we stuck at it, we defended the box when he had to, we were really strong and had that Celtic spirit.”

New update on Rodgers' Celtic future

Away from a huge win, though, Rodgers’ future is still a key talking point, and speaking to Football Insider, former Aberdeen chief executive officer Keith Wyness claimed that Celtic’s board will cause huge anger among the fanbase if the manager leaves.

“Now, what I’m hearing from my Celtic contacts is that they’re feeling that the board has become a little bit ivory tower in its view these days. They’re older. They’re used to doing things a certain way, they’re not listening to what they need to do to change, they’re not prepared to change, and there isn’t a hunger and a desire anymore to go forward.

“They’re quite happy with the money in the bank. So that’s what frustrates fans more than anything else when they see their prices going up and they have to fund the season tickets, and they don’t see that being transferred into ambition. It isn’t as though the club’s bust, the very opposite, that’s what frustrates people.

“If Brendan goes, then I think the board will see some real anger, obviously depending on who they bring in. Brendan had managed to win back over a lot of the fans and there’s a lot of sympathy for Brendan in this situation.”

There is no doubt that life under Rodgers isn’t perfect right now, and that he isn’t blameless when it comes to some underwhelming performances, but he still feels like the right man for the job for many fans.

As Wyness alludes to, he wasn’t fully supported financially in the summer transfer window, causing plenty of frustration, so he can only work with the squad he has now.

Rodgers may have unearthed Celtic's next Tierney & it's not Saracchi

Sacking Rodgers would be a big risk by the board, and if that did happen, or if the Northern Irishman leaves, they will have to nail his successor to please the supporters.

Dream for Bowen: West Ham can forget Lampard by hiring "outstanding" manager

It feels like it could be a long old season for West Ham United this year.

The East Londoners may have beaten Nottingham Forest last time out, but with three defeats before that, it feels like Graham Potter is already on borrowed time.

It’s not just the defeats that have been worrying, but the manner of them, losing 3-0 to newly promoted Sunderland, being thrashed 5-1 by London rivals Chelsea, and blowing a lead away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unsurprisingly, the Irons have been linked with a host of potential replacements in recent weeks, including former player Frank Lampard.

Frank Lampard could replace Graham Potter

With just six wins in 23 games, it’s not hard to imagine any number of managers doing a better job than Potter in East London, including Lampard.

The Hammers have reportedly already been in contact with the former player, and it’s easy to see why they might consider him a worthwhile gamble.

Since taking charge of Coventry City, the 47-year-old has won 20 games, drawn seven and lost 12, which isn’t too bad at all considering the hyper-competitive nature of the Championship.

Moreover, since the season began, the Sky Blues have been absolutely flying, scoring 14 goals, conceding just six and taking eight points from a possible 12.

Moreover, while the former Chelsea legend didn’t exactly blow anyone away the last time he managed in the Premier League, he was still able to keep Everton from going down and averaged 1.75 points per game during his first stint in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

In all, Lampard looks to have further developed as a manager and could be the answer to West Ham’s Potter-shaped problems.

However, there is another manager on the market who we think would do an even better job at the London Stadium and help the likes of Jarrod Bowen reach another level.

The manager West Ham should hire over Lampard

Now, although we think Lampard would do a better job managing West Ham than Potter, an even better option than him might be Marco Rose.

Manager Focus

Granted, the German manager hasn’t actually been linked with the club yet, but since leaving RB Leipzig in March of this year, he has been without a club.

So, why would the East Londoners want to hire the 48-year-old?

RB Leipzig coachMarcoRosebefore the match

Well, one of the most significant reasons is that he’s a manager who tends to get the very best out of his attacking talent, and as a result, plays some exhilarating football.

For example, in the 20/21 season, Borussia Dortmund scored 75 goals in the Bundesliga, but then by the end of the following season, when Rose was in charge, they’d moved up a place in the table and scored 85 goals.

The same happened at Borrussia Mönchengladbach, as they finished the 18/19 season having scored 55 goals, which increased to 66 the following campaign and 64 the year after that.

Moreover, while the effectiveness of Leipzig’s attack did vary a bit more during his tenure, the former RB Salzburg boss led them to a DFB Pokal triumph.

So, just imagine what the “outstanding” tactician, as dubbed by Dortmund legend Marco Reus, could do with players like Jarrod Bowen, who, even in this system, continues to be a real goalscoring threat.

Finally, even if you ignore the argument that he’ll bring a more entertaining brand of football to the club, you can just look at his overall managerial record.

In 458 matches, he has managed to maintain an average of 1.98 points per game – and win two league titles in Austria – whereas Lampard has averaged 1.51 points per game and Potter an even less impressive 1.50.

Ultimately, even though he hasn’t been linked with the club, West Ham should do what they can to hire Rose, and not only would he be an upgrade on Potter, but his attacking style could get even more out of Bowen.

'There is no suitable player' – Alessandro Del Piero tears into Juventus' misfiring attack after goalless Milan draw

Juventus’ goalless draw against AC Milan has reignited scrutiny of the Bianconeri’s faltering attack. Once famed for its ruthless efficiency, Juve have struggled to find a reliable frontman, a reality club legend Alessandro Del Piero did not shy away from addressing. The former Juventus striker tore into Igor Tudor’s side, insisting they have "no suitable" striker.

  • Juventus' goalless frustration at the Allianz Stadium

Juventus and Milan played out a tense 0-0 draw at the Allianz Stadium. Despite flashes of energy from Adrien Rabiot and Santiago Gimenez, Juventus once again failed to convert pressure into goals. Igor Tudor’s men remained compact defensively, with Michele Di Gregorio producing vital saves to deny Milan. But as minutes passed, Juve’s attack ran out of ideas, exposing a recurring problem – lack of sharpness in the final third. The draw extended their unbeaten run but underlined a deeper issue: a team defensively stable yet offensively stagnant. Reflecting on the game, former Italy international Del Piero also pointed out the lack of firepower in Juve's squad, insisting that the Serie A team has no one to lead them from the front.

Del Piero’s shares his verdict on Juve's lack of firepower

Speaking to Sky Sports, Juventus icon Del Piero didn’t mince words giving a scotching review of the game.

“Who is best suited to play in attack for Juventus? There isn’t a suitable player right now,” Del Piero said bluntly. “Juve has shown they’re strong in other areas, certainly not up front. Those who have started have almost always performed poorly. Vlahovic has done well as a substitute.”

The criticism went beyond personnel. Del Piero pointed to a deeper identity crisis. “If we analyse the five draws, you can say anything. Three of them came in dramatic fashion, as did the win against Inter. It’s complicated, the blanket is short. If you rotate a lot, you keep everyone on edge and give everyone confidence. But on the other hand, you lose your identity,” he said.

  • Tudor has no clear ideas up front

The former Juve forward further questioned Tudor’s tactical setup, suggesting that Juventus lack coherence in attack.

“The team recognises itself in a starting eleven, which is missing today, especially up front. Elsewhere, in defense and midfield for example, the ideas are clear. Up front, Tudor still doesn’t have clear ideas,” Del Piero said.

Del Piero further asserted that the current Juventus system limits the natural strengths of dynamic players like Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao. He called for the team to adopt a much higher tempo and sharper transitions, explaining that if the team plays with very high intensity and is more vertical, players like Yildiz and Conceicao can be "terrible" for opposing defences when given space.

The stalemate with Milan was more than dropped points, it was a reflection of an attack in transition and a club searching for direction. In their six games this season, Milan have scored just nine goals.

Elbow injury sidelines Bavuma two months before WTC final

He was due to join up with the Lions team for the domestic first-class final, but did not arrive in Johannesburg

South Africa’s Test captain Temba Bavuma has suffered an elbow injury again and will miss the domestic first-class final which starts in Johannesburg today. Bavuma was due to join up with the Lions team on Tuesday from Cape Town, but did not arrive in Johannesburg. The Lions found out late on Wednesday that Bavuma would not play the match because of the niggle, which has taken place just over two months before the World Test Championship final in June.ESPNcricinfo has ascertained Bavuma’s injury is on the left elbow – the same one he has injured before. The Lions are unaware at this stage how serious the injury is and were caught off guard by Bavuma’s late withdrawal. On Wednesday morning, Lions captain Dominic Hendricks told the media he was looking forward to playing with Bavuma in the marquee game.Bavuma fractured his left elbow in 2022, which forced him out of South Africa’s tour to England that year and sidelined him for three months. He then reinjured the same elbow when he fell awkwardly while completing a single against Ireland in an ODI in Abu Dhabi last year and missed South Africa’s Tests against Bangladesh. He had no red-ball match practice before the home summer and spoke openly about battling mental demons after a wretched run with his fitness, which also included injuries to both hamstrings. Despite that, Bavuma made a stirring comeback with two centuries in four Tests and a run of four fifty-plus scores against Sri Lanka. He also captained South Africa to the Champions Trophy semi-final but has batted with heavy strapping on his elbow throughout the season.Since the Champions Trophy, Bavuma has played no competitive cricket but was present with the Lions for their final first-class league match in Bloemfontein last week, which was completely rained out. He then traveled to Cape Town and was due to rejoin the team ahead of the final against the Titans but news of his injury has since emerged.South Africa have just over eight weeks before the WTC final against Australia which starts on June 11. They are planning practice matches from mid-May, including a game against an international opposition in England, ahead of the final. They will not play any cricket before then with several players involved at the IPL 2025 and others on the county circuit. Bavuma does not have any overseas engagements and the final was due to be his last match of the season, but the latest niggle has scuppered those plans. He was named on CSA’s central contract list this week.

Ian Holland steps up as Leicestershire take control in Cardiff

Leicestershire 65 for 1 trail Glamorgan 229 (Cooke 55, Holland 3-40, Mike 3-54) by 164 runs Leicestershire took control on the opening day of the 2025 Rothesay County Championship against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, bowling the hosts out for 229. Ian Holland and Ben Mike took three wickets apiece for the visitors after putting Glamorgan into bat while Chris Cooke’s half-century was in vain after a series of starts in the top order.Three-match loanee and debutant, Shoaib Bashir participated in a 53-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Cooke as the pitch became easier to bat on, although the England international went wicketless from his solitary over bowled.Despite the success with the ball, concerns were for Rishi Patel who left the field and didn’t return after just 16 balls with a dislocated finger fielding a ball in the slips. As a result, Holland came and went at opener as the Foxes ended the day strongly, returning for day two on 64 for 1 with Sol Budinger and makeshift No. 3 Mike at the crease. After winning the toss and putting Glamorgan into bat on a green-topped Sophia Gardens wicket, the bowlers soon reaped the rewards, led by Leicestershire’s new-ball pair of Holland and Chris Wright with a combined age of 73.Zain Ul Hassan was the first to fall, with full credit deserved for the 34-year-old Holland who troubled the Glamorgan left-handers throughout the day.Eddie Byrom and captain Sam Northeast worked hard to see off Holland’s opening spell combining for a 57-run partnership. Just when the gruelling first hour in bowling-friendly conditions appeared done, the pair fell. Northeast, lbw squared up by Tom Scriven in a mode of dismissal that had been threatened by earlier appeals, and Byrom prodding outside his eyeline for a well-made 41, a familiar story from 2024.Another rebuild for Glamorgan, and more signs of promise. Both Kiran Carlson and last year’s County Championship top run-scorer, Colin Ingram, battled past Ben Green and Scriven bowling consistently, taking advantage of loose Mike deliveries to keep the scoreboard going along into lunch at 90 for 3.Ingram came out after lunch firing, cover-driving his way past 9000 career first-class runs, making light of his early signs of discomfort. In similar fashion to earlier dismissals, however, wickets came in a group: Carlson and Ingram both falling to the second spell from Holland and an uncomfortable 18-ball knock from Ben Kellaway, bowled by Scriven, leaving Glamorgan at 132 for 6.Leicestershire continued to dominate the second session as the hosts bided their time, scoring at two-an-over heading into tea with the wickets of Timm van der Gugten and Andy Gorvin falling to Mike, bowling a better spell the second time around. As the ball began to wear and the sun shone down on Sophia Gardens, the pitch appeared to flatten and life became easier for Cooke and Bashir who added 53 for the ninth wicket, 48 of those in less than 10 overs after tea – before falling to Mike, claiming his third, and Rehan Ahmed picking up a first wicket, respectively. As expected, Patel couldn’t bat for Leicestershire with his return unknown, and Holland faced up before falling to van der Gugten for a third time in as many innings. Mike continued to have his day as he and Budinger negotiated Glamorgan’s bowlers until the end of play with an unbeaten partnership of 47 despite a dropped catch from Ingram and a couple tight lbw appeals denied.

Celtic now agree deal to sell Champions League gem after qualifier defeat

Celtic have agreed a deal to sell a Champions League player following their qualifier defeat to Kairat Almaty.

Rodgers frustrated as Celtic miss out on Champions League football

The Hoops missed out on a fourth consecutive Champions League campaign after being stunned by Kairat Almaty on Tuesday evening. After 210 minutes of goalless action, Celtic lost on penalties, with Adam Idah, Luke McCowan and Daizen Maeda all having their spotkicks saved by Kairat’s 21-year-old second-choice goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov.

Talking after the defeat in Kazakhstan, Rodgers described the defeat as a “huge blow”. “It’s very frustrating. We showed a glimpse of what we can do at this level but we haven’t been able to show that over the course of these two games.

“It’s bitterly disappointing, because we were on the right track last season and working really well and playing really good football, so to not be in there this season is a huge blow for us. We missed a massive opportunity over these two games.

“I thought overall it was a poor game. The pitch made it awful. We were defensively OK but couldn’t quite make the breakthrough. We had good chances, especially in the second half and extra-time, and when it goes to penalties anything can happen.

“We just have to reflect on opportunities that we didn’t take and we have to settle for the Europa League.”

There is still time for Celtic to bring in further signings before Monday’s transfer deadline, and former Hoops star Stiliyan Petrov thinks Rodgers is short of “four or five classy players”.

“I think they’re short probably four or five classy players with good quality. Celtic has always paid attention to developing players, giving them time, but they have those players. Now they need quality. They need players who can make a difference.”

Celtic agree deal to sell Mitchel Frame

According to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, following the Hoops’ defeat to Kairat Almaty, Celtic have now agreed to sell teenager Mitchel Frame to Aberdeen.

Those at Parkhead have included a “significant sell-on clause”, with the full-back into the final 12 months of his current Glasgow deal.

Frame actually made his Celtic debut in the Champions League against Feyenoord back in 2023, but since then, hasn’t featured under Rodgers.

Rangers could seal bigger coup than Miovski with late move for £10m star

Glasgow Rangers have officially confirmed that centre-forward Hamza Igamane has moved on from Ibrox to complete a permanent transfer to Ligue 1 side Lille.

The Morocco international has left the club after 12 months in Scotland and put pen to paper on a long-term deal in France, days after Russell Martin revealed that the attacker claimed he was too injured to come off the bench against St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.

Igamane produced some brilliant moments on the pitch in his first, and what turned out to be only, season at Ibrox, as he showcased his ability to be a real difference-maker for the side.

The 22-year-old star ended the season with 12 goals in the Premiership and four goals in the Europa League for the Light Blues, per Sofascore, including a stunning winner against Celtic.

This means that the Gers are going to need to find other sources of goals to replace what he provided at the top end of the pitch, and they appear to have made great progress with that.

Bojan Miovski has officially signed for the Scottish giants on a permanent deal from Girona, and will be hoping to replicate the performances he produced with Aberdeen.

What Bojan Miovski can offer to Rangers

The Macedonia international is a pure goalscorer. Supporters should not expect him to be incredibly physical with defenders or creative for his teammates, although there may be elements of both of those things.

What Rangers fans can expect from Miovski, though, is goals. His record speaks for itself: 32 goals in two seasons in the Premiership with the Dons in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed marksman is an efficient finisher who wants to take shots and hit the target with plenty of efforts on goal.

However, you can also see that Miovski is not particularly creative, with just two assists in each season, which places an emphasis on the creativity mainly coming from the midfield and wide positions.

Therefore, overall, Rangers fans should expect plenty of shots and plenty of goals from the former Aberdeen and Girona man, but they should not expect him to be a complete centre-forward who will provide quality in all phases of play.

That does not mean that he will not be a terrific signing for Martin’s side, though, because goals win games at the end of the day, and Miovski is a player who has the quality to score buckets full of goals.

Whilst the 26-year-old star, who is in the prime of years of his career, appears to be a big coup for the Gers, the club could land an even bigger coup by signing one of their targets from earlier in the window.

Rangers were reportedly in talks with Crystal Palace to sign Jesurun-Rak-Sakyi earlier this summer, but they have not since signed another winger with a similar profile to his.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast

Oliver Antman, a right-footed right-sided playmaker, came through the door, but Rak-Sakyi is a left-footed right-sided goalscoring threat, which means that there is still space for that kind of player to join the squad.

Now, with a few days left before the end of the summer transfer window, the Scottish giants should push to sign the English star, who was valued at £10m by the Eagles.

Why Rangers should sign Jesurun Rak-Sakyi

The Gers must swoop to sign the Palace youngster before the end of the summer transfer window on Monday because he would be a much-needed alternative to Antman on the right.

The Finland international, who signed from Go Ahead Eagles, has looked a little bit too one-dimensional as a right-footed player on the right wing against low blocks, with zero goals, one completed dribble, and zero ‘big chances’ created in two league games, per Sofascore.

Rak-Sakyi, as a left-footed player, could provide more incision for Rangers in league games when they are tasked with breaking down a low block, which is the majority of them, because he can comfortably drift infield to make things happen centrally or go down the line and test his full-back that way.

That is why a lot of managers tend to lean towards ‘inverted’ wingers, who cut inside onto their favoured foot, because it adds more dynamism and versatility to the way that you can attack.

The left-footed star could be a bigger coup for Rangers than Miovski because of his ability to impact games as both a scorer and a creator of goals, rather than just as a scorer.

As you can see in the table above, Rak-Sakyi has provided ten assists to go along with 22 goals in his two full senior seasons, starting 62 matches in that time.

These statistics show that he is a young talent who has the potential to deliver goals and assists on a fairly regular basis if given the opportunity to start week-in-week-out in a dominant Rangers team that is looking to win consistently.

This means that the Eagles winger, who was described as “devastating” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide a more varied threat in front of goal than Miovski, scoring when he is not at his best creatively, or creating when he is not at his best as a scorer.

Whereas, if the opposition find a way to prevent Miovski from getting shots away, there is not much else that he offers to the team, unlike Rak-Sakyi.

Sima repeat at Ibrox: Rangers are in talks to sign "outstanding" £15m star

Rangers are reportedly pursuing a deal to sign a star who could be Abdallah Sima 2.0.

ByDan Emery Aug 29, 2025

At the age of 22, Rak-Sakyi is also four years younger than Miovski and, therefore, has more potential to grow and develop with more experience under his belt, which is yet another reason why he would be a bigger coup than the Macedonia international.
