Sunderland could have advantage in race for Luca Murphy

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland are one of a number of teams chasing 17 year-old defender Luca Murphy, but it appears as though they already have an advantage in the race for the teenager’s signature.

What’s the story?

According to TEAMtalk, Murphy has left Hartlepool United and now has every team under the sun chasing him.

The free agent is a ball-playing centre back and is rated extremely highly, despite never featuring in a senior match for the Pools.

The report claims Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Leicester, Cardiff, Wolves, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Brentford, Sheffield United, Barnsley and Sunderland are all looking into the possibility of signing the 17 year-old, implying that he’s quite the wonderkid.

However, his social media exploits suggest he has a soft spot for Wearside.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

The perfect storm

First of all, it should be noted that Murphy is not ready to walk into the first XI of any of the teams chasing him, but the likes of Sunderland, Barnsley and Brentford are the most capable of offering him regular playing time.

Jack Ross has also shown throughout his managerial career that he will place his trust in youth, consistently picking Jimmy Dunne for the Black Cats this season despite some worrying performances, even with his side in the thick of a promotion race.

On top of that, a quick browse through Murphy’s “likes” on Twitter reveals his love of Lee Cattermole, Luke O’Nien and of course the infamous half time race in which a Sunderland fan tripped a visiting Plymouth Argyle fan. It’s a perfect storm.

Quite clearly, the defender has a soft spot for Sunderland, and together with the opportunity to get regular playing time under a young manager, the Black Cats may just be best-placed to secure his signature.

West Bromwich Albion: Hurry the Slavisa Jokanovic appointment up

Well, that wasn’t as easy as it seemed, was it?

In their first game after the Darren Moore era, West Bromwich Albion pulled off the nerviest 3-0 victories in recent memory against a resurgent Swansea City, with Sam Johnstone’s brilliance in goal and Chris Brunt’s set-piece prowess bailing them out. That sounds strange, considering the result, but the scoreline certainly flattered the Baggies.

Jimmy Shan saw his side being overwhelmed, but lady luck allowed them to take their chances and get the win. The senior stars returned to form, but Shan’s been unable to solve their defensive issues with the clean-sheet shadowing what really went on. Had Johnstone not been there, it could’ve been a humiliation.

Despite taking a big step forward in the playoffs race, struggling against a 15th-placed Swansea side proved a need for a more experienced figure. In order to hold their composure during the playoffs, they need someone experienced. Slavisa Jokanovic is one of the favourites (as per Sky Sports) to succeed Moore as permanent manager, but there are some issues delaying his appointment.

Be it relating to his salary or some other problems, the Baggies need to bring him in soon. There’s just no way they can’t. Too much is at risk considering the riches on offer when it comes to returning to the English top tier.

Jokanovic needs some time to understand the squad and its strengths, and only after attaining a proper understanding could he relay them towards succeeding in the business end of the season. It’s a process, yes, but one that needs to begin soon.

West Brom definitely have a talent-packed squad which will give many options to the Serbian, so there shouldn’t be a delay. Indeed, he needs to be brought in soon for him to get them playing attractive, attacking football and etching a winning mentality which takes them all the way.

Jokanovic’s brand of football isn’t perfect but it can be hugely effective, as he’s proved at both Fulham and Watford. Time is of the essence here, we’ve seen what a long, drawn-out process when it comes to bringing in a manager over at Chelsea and the Baggies risk similar issues unless they give the man what he wants.

Newcastle fans react to interest in Patrick Erras

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been running the rule over the latest transfer news, as reports in Germany claim the Magpies are chasing Nurnberg midfielder Patrick Erras.

According to Bild, Newcastle are “keen” on a move for Erras this summer, but will face plenty of competition for his signature.

Erras will enter the final year of his contract next season, meaning it’s exactly the type of deal Mike Ashley will go for, and the report claims a whole host of English clubs are interested.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

Of course, Newcastle will be in need of some midfield reinforcements; Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey are both likely to depart while Mo Diame’s future is still anyone’s guess.

Diame is depending on a contract extension that is triggered by a certain amount of appearances, while Hayden is expected to repeat his January attempts to leave and Shelvey is wanted by West Ham.

Erras is only 24, but standing at 6 ft 5 he would provide a huge boost in physicality to Newcastle’s midfield.

Plenty of fans have given their verdict on the links though, and they’re getting more and more fed up of Ashley’s bargain hunting…

Celtic fans crucify January signing Oliver Burke

[ad_pod ]

Celtic swept St Mirren aside on Wednesday night, but the performance of Oliver Burke has not been met with a positive reaction from the Parkhead faithful.

The Bhoys travelled to The Simple Digital Arena on Wednesday off the back of an Old Firm derby from which the talking points are still raging on.

Neil Lennon’s side kept their eyes firmly on the task at hand though, dominating their hosts from the off.

Tim Weah opened the scoring with a header that came down off the crossbar and just crossed the line, though Burke should have bagged in the build-up to that goal.

Olivier Ntcham missed a penalty that would have made life a lot easier in the second half, but Ryan Christie was on hand to seal the three points with a lovely late goal.

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would perform for them in a hilarious prank by Pl>ymaker FC…

Despite the relatively comfortable win, it certainly wasn’t a vintage Hoops performance by any means, and Burke in particular looked lost as a lone centre forward.

The 21 year-old has four goals in 15 Celtic showings, but his woeful first touch is drawing the ire of loads of fans.

The Most Devastating Attacking Trios In Europe Right Now

European football is home to some of the world’s most piercing and dangerous attacking-trios playing on the biggest stages the sport has to offer.

It’s the superstars everyone looks out for – from Kylian Mbappe to Lionel Messi to Neymar to Cristiano Ronaldo – if they’re firing then the fans are happy, and so are their teammates.

But what European team across the continent’s top five divisions can boast the most dangerous of attacking trios? We’ve compiled a list of Europe’s top 20 most dangerous goalscoring attacks right now, and you’ll be surprised at who’s there, who isn’t and the player that have contributed…

20. Lille OSC: Pépé – Bamba – Leão (40 goals)

Lille have shot up the Ligue 1 table in 2018-19 – they trail only Paris St.-Germain in second-place with eight matches remaining in the campaign – with much of the French side’s success due to their powerful attacking trio.

Led by Pepe’s 20 goals in all competitions, along with scoring contributions from Bamba and Leao (12 and 8 goals respectively), the club has gone from a 17th-place finish in 2017-18 to title challengers.

Pepe, Bamba and Leao have contributed 40 goals between them in all competitions this season.

19. Getafe: Mata – Molina – Rodriguez (40 goals)

The Azulones are making a strong push for a top-four finish in 2018-19, and the club has gotten there in large part from the contribution of their top-three attackers.

Spanish forward Mata leads the way with 15 goals to his name and Molina and Rodriguez trail close behind with 13 and 12 goals respectively. As a result, Getafe boast one of Europe’s most balanced attacking trios.

Of the club’s 66 goals in all competitions, this trio has scored 40 of them.

18. Olympique Lyon: Dembélé – Fekir – Traoré (42 goals)

Dembele has not disappointed since his summer Deadline Day transfer, tallying 18 goals for the French side in his debut Liue 1 season.

Fekir’s 12 goals from midfield and Traore’s 11 from wide have been crucial and Lyon now sit third in the league chasing Champions League qualification.

The trio’s 42 goals combined in all competitions places them among the top attacking fronts in France, as well as all of Europe.

17. RB Leipzig: Poulsen – Werner – Augustin (43 goals)

Leipzig’s trio have accounted for nearly half of all of the club’s goal this campaign and the club now sit 3rd in the Bundesliga as the season enters its final stretch.

Werner (17 goals) has continued to carry a heavy scoring burden for the German side while Poulsen (18) has emerged as a crucial complement in the attack this campaign. Augustin, meanwhile, has remained a consistent contributor tallying eight goals thus far.

With 43 goals between them, this trio has asserted itself among Germany’s best attacks.

16. Manchester United: Lukaku – Pogba – Rashford (44 goals)

United’s roller coaster 2018-19 season has transformed into a massive turnaround at Old Trafford, and with it have some stellar scoring numbers from the club’s biggest names.

After scoring a pair of spot kicks against West Ham, Pogba leads the way with 16 tallies while Lukaku trails just behind with 15 goals to his name. And Rashford, hampered by Jose Mourinho in the early stages of the campaign, has consistently shown his attacking quality since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, possessing 13 goals in 39 appearances.

Together the trio have amassed a combined 44 goals, about 52 percent of Manchester United’s total goals on the season, while presenting an always dangerous attacking threat to opposing defences.

15. Arsenal: Aubameyang – Lacazette – Mkhitaryan (44 goals)

The Gunners have worked their way into the top-four race during Unai Emery’s first season with the club, and the Spanish manager has his attackers to thank for it.

Aubameyang, appearing in his first full campaign with the club, has contributed 23 goals in all competitions while Lacazette has performed well in his role as the second striker, netting 15 goals of his own.

Mkhitaryan and his six goals makeup the final piece of an Arsenal attacking trio that has turned dangerous this year.

The 44 goals in all competitions scored by the trio of ranks them No. 4 among Premier League clubs.

14. Hoffenheim: Kramaric – Joelinton – Belfodil (45 goals)

Forced to assume a larger bulk of the scoring duties this season, Kramaric has been exceptional in 2018-19, scoring a club-leading 20 goals in all competitions.

Providing offensive support elsewhere have been forwards Belfodil (14 goals) and Joelinton (11), each playing in their first full seasons with the club and making a strong mark with their performances so far.

While Hoffenheim sit mid-table, it has been a successful season for this trio of attackers who have chipped in with 45 goals between them.

13. Atalanta: Zapáta – Ilicic – Gómez (45 goals)

Zapata sits third in Serie A’s Golden Boot race and his 25 goals in all competitions lead the way for the side from Northern Italy, who are currently challenging for European qualification.

Ilicic has contributed 11 goals while Gomez has added nine of his own, and together the trio combine to make up what has been one of the most prolific attacks in all of Italy this season.

Together, Zapata, Ilicic and Gomez have 45 goals in all competitions between them this term.

12. Juventus: Ronaldo – Dybala – Mandzukic (45 goals)

This trio has relied heavily on Ronaldo this campaign. The five-time Champions League winner has netted 26 goals so far this term, while leading Juventus to the top of Serie A and into the Champions League quarter-final in his first year with the club. Dybala and Mandzukic, unsurprisingly, have taken on reduced roles to make way for Ronaldo’s arrival, but have scored ten and nine goals, respectively, during this campaign.

As the 2018-19 season draws nearer and nearer to its close, this trio’s 45 goals have accounted for more than half of Juventus’ scoring in all competitions.

Unsung hero: Jermain Defoe shows why Morelos shouldn’t be missed

Rangers on course for runners-up medal after smashing Motherwell 3-0 on Sunday.

What a performance from Scott Arfield who bagged his first professional hattrick on Sunday to make it back-to-back wins for Rangers following the midweek victory over Hearts.

Two changes were made to the side who cruised to victory on Wednesday, the suspended Ryan Kent and Joe Worrall making way for Daniel Candeias and Nikola Katic.

The opening minutes produced scant little for the visitors to get excited about, and though Rangers typically saw most of the ball, it was the hosts who enjoyed the initial set of opportunities to take the lead, Jake Hastie shooting over while Charles Dunne fluffed his header wide from a corner.

After 22 minutes, however, it was the Gers who opened the scoring. Arfield, latching onto a move initiated by Daniel Candeias and Jermaine Defoe, kept his composure to silkily finish past ‘keeper Mark Gillespie.

Defoe continued to pressure in the forward positions and very nearly doubled Rangers lead but for the staunch work of Motherwell’s Gillespie, who did extremely well when meeting the Englishman’s low driven half-volley.

Arfield did what Defoe couldn’t minutes later. High pressure from Candeias and Ryan Jack retrieved the ball from the helpless Well defence, gifting the former the opportunity to play through the temporarily lethal Arfield, who again despatched his chance past Gillespie.

More pressing from Rangers rewarded them with their third and final goal on the hour mark. Jack involved again, this time winning the ball from Turnbull, played through Defoe into a one-on-one situation, and though the Englishman could’ve quite easily scored, he unselfishly played through Arfield to round off his hattrick.

Unsurprisingly Scott Arfield claimed the Man of the Match award for his three goals. However, we’d like to give a special mention to Jermaine Defoe as our ‘unsung hero’ on this occasion. The veteran striker was in top form at the weekend, and though he didn’t claim a goal, there was every bit of evidence to suggest that he will be a very important player going forwards for Rangers.

Defoe’s experience allowed him to find pockets of space which would’ve otherwise been neglected, creating more headaches for the Motherwell defenders than they could cope with, and his admirably unselfish assist towards the end of the match helped Scott Arfield create a moment he’ll likely never forget.

Special player.

Pundit View: Mark Wilson says Lennon will get permanent Celtic role if he beats Rangers

[ad_pod ]

Celtic are yet to make a decision on who will replace Brendan Rodgers on a permanent basis, and ex-Bhoys defender Mark Wilson thinks Neil Lennon will get the job, on one condition.

Celtic are ten points clear at the top of the league after last weekend’s results, with Rangers now forced to sit and watch as their arch-rivals cruise to their eighth consecutive league title.

The Bhoys of course won’t take their foot off the gas from here, as there is still the small matter of the Old Firm after the international break.

And Wilson, who racked up 98 appearances in the league for Celtic, thinks Lennon should be handed the permanent manager’s position if he can overcome the Gers on March 31st.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

What has he said?

“It’s done and dusted. The big thing is how far can Celtic stretch the lead – and that will be on Steven Gerrard’s mind,” Wilson said, as reported by The Daily Record.

“They are 10 points clear and I think they will make it 13 when the two sides meet at the end of next week.

Continuing on about the gap that has developed between the two rivals since the turn of the year, he said: “If Neil had let the gap slip then maybe questions would be asked but he’s got it to 10 and if he gets it to 13 or more then he has to get the job.

“If he wins the Scottish Cup too then there won’t even be a discussion.”

Is he right?

Celtic have failed to win just once domestically since their defeat at Ibrox at the end of 2018, and it’s fair to say the new year has been good to the Bhoys, despite the departure of Brendan Rodgers.

However, Lennon should not be given the job on the spot for a few good results, especially considering that the “gap” that Wilson repeatedly refers to is down to the sorry efforts of Rangers as much as it is Celtic’s brilliance.

The 0-0 draw against Aberdeen and 1-0 win over Dundee were stark reminders of how dull Lennon’s football often is, and if not for Steven Gerrard’s side failing to win a single game in the month of March then the Old Firm could be an awful lot more important than it now seems.

Lennon has done a great job steadying the ship, but the club should ignore Wilson’s advice and look for someone with greater European pedigree.

Transfer Focus: Everton’s Kurt Zouma drops hint that he wants Goodison Park stay

[ad_pod ]

In an interview with Sky Sports, on-loan Everton centre-back Kurt Zouma has dropped a hint that he wants to stay at Goodison Park beyond the summer.

What’s the word, then?

The France international is currently only contracted to stay with Marco Silva’s men until the end of the 2018/2019 season, at which point he’s still due to return to Chelsea.

However, speaking openly about his future with Sky Sports, the 24-year-old discussed being “very happy” on Merseyside, enjoying his season there so far, praised the squad that his current manager is building and stating that he’s heard nothing about his future from Stamford Bridge.

Zouma originally signed for the west London club in January 2014 from St-Etienne and despite picking up two Premier League titles along the way, has been loaned out three times and plagued by injury. However, this term has allowed him to find form, stay mostly injury free and break back into the squad of his national side.

Zouma and Everton are the perfect fit

It’s not hard to see based on what’s happened in their relationship together so far – Zouma and Everton are the perfect fit and Director of Football Marcel Brands needs to act on that.

The way they’ve complemented each other in 2018/2019 has been perfect, the player helping the club to be in European contention ahead of the run-in and the club pushing the player to get back up to the level of his early Blues days.

There’s no secret about the fact Silva would like to keep both of his main loan stars at the season’s end, Andre Gomes from Barcelona being the other.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

And the Blue Half of Merseyside’s central defence is ageing rapidly, 36-year-old captain Phil Jagielka having been a mainstay of it for a long time.

But if Brands and Silva can get Zouma to stay, he can be the future of the club’s central defence alongside Michael Keane. He’s got so many years ahead of him at the age of 24 and has already acclimatised well to life at Goodison Park.

Tying down the 6 ft 3 beast on a permanent deal may be easier said than done when we factor in the west Londoners’ potential transfer ban, though it’s something the Toffees simply have to do keep moving forward.
