Sky Sports: Man Utd eye move for new "unplayable" ace to replace Rashford

Manchester United are now considering a late swoop for an “unplayable” Premier League attacker, with Marcus Rashford closing in on a move to Aston Villa, according to Sky Sports.

Rashford's time at Old Trafford coming to an end

Rashford has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford ever since a bombshell interview in December, in which the forward expressed he is “ready for a new challenge”, and he is now set to seal a move away from his boyhood club.

The United academy graduate is due to have a medical to complete a move to Villa Park, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealing the Villans will have the option to make the deal permanent for a fee of £40m at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has not been a part of Ruben Amorim’s plans for nearly two months, with his last Premier League appearance coming against Nottingham Forest back in December, and the manager recently hinted he hasn’t been giving 100% in training.

“It’s always the same reason – the training, the way I see a footballer should do in life. It’s every day, every detail. You can see on the bench we miss a bit of pace on the bench, but I would put [Manchester United goalkeeper coach Jorge] Vital before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

Man Utd now prioritising move to sign £145k-p/w ace who may replace Onana

Onana has continued to struggle…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 1, 2025

With Rashford now poised to leave, Amorim is now tasked with finding a replacement, and Sky Sports report that Villa’s Leon Bailey is one of the players “under consideration” for a late transfer swoop.

The potential deal to sign Bailey would be separate from the Rashford move, which has seemingly already been agreed, with the Englishman set to undergo a medical.

Aston Villa'sLeonBaileyin action with Celtic's Greg Taylor

The Villa winger is just one of the names under consideration for a move to Old Trafford, with the Red Devils yet to make a formal approach, but there could be developments before the deadline on Monday.

What Bailey could offer Man Utd

The £120k-per-week attacker has looked impressive at times in a Villa shirt, and he was particularly potent in front of goal during the 2023-24 campaign, amassing 19 goal contributions in 35 Premier League games to help his side secure Champions League football.

The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell has lauded the 27-year-old as “unplayable” during his time with the Villans, however, he has struggled to replicate last season’s form this term, picking up just one goal and three assists in all competitions.

As such, there is some doubt over whether Bailey would be a solid signing to replace Rashford, but United’s options are likely to be limited at this stage of the transfer window, and he could make an impact if he is able to rediscover his previous form, making this one to watch.

Emery has struck gold on Aston Villa star who is worth more than Rashford

Aston Villa enjoyed a rather productive January transfer window. First of all, they managed to sell Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town for £20m, making a profit on the youngster.

Secondly, they signed two attacking players who could make a big difference between now and the end of the season.

Donyell Malen joined from Borussia Dortmund a few weeks ago, while Marcus Rashford moved to Villa Park on loan from Manchester United, with a £40m buy option inserted into the deal.

Unai Emery’s side are chasing a place in the top four of the Premier League table. Signing Rashford could be an inspired one with regard to that ambition.

Why Aston Villa signed Marcus Rashford

Since Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United, Rashford featured just four times under the Portuguese manager, scoring three goals.

It became clear that the Englishman wasn’t going to play a part in Amorim’s system going forward and a move away from Old Trafford could be the best thing to happen to him.

Despite a relatively quiet season by his standards, Rashford has still created four big chances, averages one key pass and has scored four goals in the top flight. That said, despite the fact he’s not been fit and firing this term, this is still a player who has scored 87 Premier League goals.

At Villa, Emery will likely give him more consistent game time and if he hits top form, it could be a wise signing indeed.

The manager may already have a player at the club who is worth way more than Rashford, however.

Aston Villa talent is worth even more than Marcus Rashford

Someone who has been superb during the 2024/25 campaign is another English talent in Morgan Rogers.

The second half of the 2023/24 season saw Rogers begin to make his mark at Villa, scoring three goals and registering an assist in just 11 Premier League games since his move from Middlesbrough.

It was evident Emery had a prodigious talent on his hands, but even he might have been shocked at just how well the Englishman has performed throughout 2024/25.

In August, U23 scout Antonio Mango waxed lyrical about the winger, saying that he was “terrific” and “brave”, someone who has “all you characteristics you want in a young footballer.”

That’s certainly been true of Rogers in 2024/25. With ten goals and five assists already, including a stunning hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League, the former Boro star has emerged as a key player under Emery. No doubt about that.

Compared to his peers in the top flight, the starlet even ranks in the top 7% for goals per shot on target and in the top 11% for through balls per 90, yet more evidence of his effectiveness in the final third.

These incredible performances over the previous 12 months have seen his market value soar.

Indeed, according to the CIES Football Observatory, Rogers is now currently valued at a staggering £74m, which is a staggering rise, especially considering the Villa Park side paid just £15m to sign him last year.

This also means he is worth nearly double that of Rashford if going by the buy clause in his loan deal, indicating that Emery has hit the jackpot on the 22-year-old sensation.

Shan Masood signs for Yorkshire on two-year deal

Ben Mike also joins club in move from Leicestershire

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Aug-2022Shan Masood, the Pakistan opening batter, has been confirmed as Yorkshire’s new overseas signing, after signing a two-year deal ahead of the 2023 season.Masood, 32, has been a revelation for Derbyshire this summer, scoring 1,779 runs in all competitions so far, but as revealed by ESPNcricinfo, the temptation and prestige of joining Yorkshire was a big incentive for the player.”I’m delighted to have signed for Yorkshire,” Masood said. “The pedigree and the history of Yorkshire CCC is massive and to play at Headingley week in week out is a dream. To follow in the footsteps of the three Pakistan captains (Inzamam ul Haq, Younis Khan and Sarfaraz Ahmed) that have represented Yorkshire is really exciting.”I’m looking forward to sharing a dressing room with some really talented players, including the current England players like Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Dawid Malan and Harry Brook.”I’m also looking forward to working with Ottis Gibson again, having worked closely with him in the PSL (Pakistan Super League) this year.Masood played the most recent of his 25 Tests in January 2021, but remains committed to earning a Pakistan recall, and believes the allure of Division One cricket at Yorkshire will help him to fulfil that ambition.”I maintain a strong desire to play cricket at the highest level and I feel this project at Yorkshire provides me with the ideal opportunity to take that step. I share the ambition of the Club to win trophies whilst playing an exciting brand of cricket.”Yorkshire have also announced the signing of Ben Mike, the Leicestershire allrounder, on a three-year deal. Mike, 23, has taken 79 first-class and 40 white-ball wickets in his career to date, as well as 1,944 runs, and last season sealed a thrilling victory against Yorkshire in the T20 Blast with a last-ball six.”I am excited to have signed for such a prestigious club as Yorkshire CCC. I will wear the white rose with pride,” Mike said. “I have enjoyed my time at Leicestershire and want to thank everyone there. However, the opportunity to play for Yorkshire CCC and learn from some of the greats at the club is an amazing opportunity.”Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s Interim managing director of cricket, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Shan and Ben have opted to join us here at Yorkshire.”Shan is a world-class batter who will contribute in all formats for us. He’s a great senior player and we’ve seen from his performances with Derbyshire this year that he has what it takes to score a lot of runs in county cricket.”His experiences from playing around the world, including international cricket with Pakistan, will be incredibly valuable to the squad we are building.”Ben is a very talented young cricketer whose signature was in demand around the counties so it’s brilliant that he will be in our ranks next year.

Dan Worrall, Gus Atkinson lead Surrey's seam battering of Northants

Surrey’s five-man pace attack blew Northamptonshire away for the second time in 24 hours at the Kia Oval, dismissing them for 202 to complete an emphatic LV= Insurance County Championship victory by an innings and five runs inside three days.Dan Worrall picked up 3 for 37, Gus Atkinson 3 for 26 and Jordan Clark 2 for 43 as Surrey, who earlier in the day had finished off the Northamptonshire first innings for 194 with Colin de Grandhomme taking 4 for 39, strengthened their position at the top of Division One with a third win from five games. This was a real show of power by Surrey, who earned 22 points, despite the absence from this match of Ollie Pope with illness and the fact Sam Curran did not bowl in either Northamptonshire innings as he continues to manage his return from a stress fracture of the back. In addition, left-arm paceman Reece Topley was rested.Worrall, though, hugely impressed on his home debut, after being signed last winter from Gloucestershire, and the 30-year-old Australian – now classed as a home player due to his British passport – claimed the vital scalp of Will Young soon after Northamptonshire had been asked to follow on.Worrall produced an absolute beauty to have New Zealand Test opener caught behind for 3 in his fourth over with the new ball, leaving the visitors on 8 for 2 after Ricardo Vasconcelos had also edged to keeper Ben Foakes off Clark in the previous over.Emilio Gay, to his enormous credit, then shrugged off a series of nasty blows to both his right and left elbows to hit a number of lovely strokes in a brave 51 and hold up Surrey’s seam battery for an hour and a half. Gay twice needed on-field treatment to his right elbow in one Clark over just before lunch and soon after his arrival at the crease. Then, on 33, he was struck on his left elbow by a de Grandhomme delivery that spat up at him.But the most painful blow came just after he had reached a 56-ball fifty with a pull off de Grandhomme, his ninth four. The next ball from the New Zealand allrounder again lifted sharply and Gay initially looked as if he could not carry on after a stoppage for yet more treatment to his right elbow.Deciding perhaps unwisely to bat on, Gay was then beaten from de Grandhomme’s next ball and also nicked Jamie Overton just short of Foakes before Atkinson found his edge again and this time it carried to the Surrey and England keeper. Atkinson’s first spell of 5-17-2 had also accounted for Luke Procter, well caught just inside the deep square leg boundary by Curran for 9 when the left-hander slightly mishit a pull at the young allrounder’s second ball.Northamptonshire’s slide continued apace following Gay’s dismissal, with Saif Zaib leg-before for 8 to a searing Overton yorker, Rob Keogh bowled off stump for 15 by another superb Worrall outswinger and Lewis McManus giving Foakes a fourth catch of the innings off Clark.Tom Taylor sparred de Grandhomme to second slip on 18, soon after tea, but Matt Kelly and Simon Kerrigan both enjoyed themselves in a ninth wicket stand of 50 before Worrall returned to have Kerrigan caught at cover for 25 and Atkinson saw Kelly swing high to deep midwicket on 33.Northamptonshire’s first innings, meanwhile, had earlier lasted just another 10.4 overs after they began day three on 154 for 8, with Procter – who had resumed on 61 – remaining 83 not out from 196 balls and fully deserving of the crowd’s warm applause following a determined lone hand. One of Procter’s last defiant blows was a memorable six off Overton that flew out of the ground over the short boundary and into the Harleyford Road.de Grandhomme picked up the remaining two Northamptonshire first innings wickets, pinning Kerrigan leg-before for 12 with a full-pitched swinging delivery and then forcing Ben Sanderson sky to mid-on when the No. 11 miscued an attempted smear.

Babar expects Pakistan to take 'momentum' into second Test after 'dominating' in Rawalpindi

Australia captain Cummins expects the Karachi wicket to “break up a bit more” after a dull draw in the first Test

Danyal Rasool11-Mar-2022

Nauman Ali picked up six wickets in Australia’s only innings in the first Test•PCB

There wasn’t much to speak of following the first Test in Rawalpindi, apart from the playing surface around which a dull draw began to take shape as early as the second day. Just 14 wickets fell across five days with the pitch never quite breaking up as Pakistan might have hoped. The match referee Ranjan Madugalle rated the pitch “below average” and one demerit point was handed out to the venue. PCB chairman Ramiz Raja, somewhat unusually, released a video statement, all but admitting the pitch had been neutralised because of the unavailability of Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali.So it was perhaps natural that Babar Azam would be peppered with questions about the surface, and whether Pakistan were a touch too wary of Australia. And as expected, the Pakistan captain pushed back hard against the notion.Related

Swepson in line for Karachi debut as Aus ponder two-pronged spin attack

Why did Pakistan sedate Rawalpindi, their liveliest Test pitch?

“We’re not frightened of Australia,” he insisted. “The conditions are the same for both teams, and the World Test Championship points are very crucial. As a captain, I wanted us to win. The way our side dominated, we had batters score 150-plus and [bowlers] get wickets. So there’s nothing to panic about. We dominated. We didn’t get a result, unfortunately, but that’s not in our hands. If all the overs that were lost due to rain were played, maybe we’d have a different result.”But while mystery shrouded the nature of the strip in use in Rawalpindi, there appears to be much more congruity about the characteristics of the wicket in Karachi. Australian captain Pat Cummins said the wicket looked drier, and Karachi’s historical friendliness towards spinners has seen the visitors drop Josh Hazlewood and hand legspinner Mitchell Swepson his debut. Babar admitted Pakistan didn’t know much about the Queenslander yet.”I haven’t seen much of him,” he said. “We’ll watch videos of him and plan accordingly. We’ve started practice here; it’s quite hot and the conditions are different. We have momentum with us; we dominated the first Test and had great individual and team performances. The batters batted well, the bowlers took ten wickets, and Nauman six. The overall team performance was good and we’re trying to take that momentum into this game.”Just like Imam-ul-Haq on Thursday, Babar too defended the Rawalpindi pitch. “The conditions here are not as they are in Australia,” he said. “Every venue has different conditions that we utilise. You can’t just produce bouncy wickets or ‘Australia-style’ wickets; that’s not possible. We’ll go by our strength and try and win the match that way. Test match situations and pitches are different to ODIs; matches have to last five days. Later on, the spinners will get help.”The pitch looks like a sporting wicket. There’s lots of talk about how the pitch should have been. Whatever the kind of wicket, you must put in the effort to score runs and take wickets. In Australia, we have the world’s best team here, and performing against them is very difficult; they give you a tough time. The way the team performed and worked hard has been heartening. You need patience, and I think our side showed a lot of patience.”For Australia, four batters got to half-centuries in the first Test, but all of them fell short of the three-figure mark; Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne were dismissed three and ten runs shy. Cummins said Australia had spoken about the need to capitalise once the batters were set, but defended his bowlers’ performance, despite the visitors managing only four wickets in 239 overs.”We spoke about that [batters’ performances] after the game. There are some really good positives from the batting group to get high 400s but over here, if you get yourself in, you’ve to capitalise. Even last week if we are being really critical, we might have missed a chance where we could have got a good lead ahead and had a chance to bowl on day five with a bit of a lead. They’ve been working hard the last couple of days of training. We think this wicket will provide a couple more questions and they are up for it.”We didn’t get as many wickets as we would have liked but never let the run rate slip, on past tours of the subcontinent we have. We never lost control of the game. As a Test match, it was an absolute outlier, so [we will] put it behind us and come here where we’ll probably get closer to the conditions we would expect in a subcontinent Test. I expect this wicket to break up a little bit more.”

Newcastle now willing to take gamble on "fantastic" main target in 2025

Looking to take a vital step back towards the Premier League’s top four, Newcastle United are now reportedly willing to take a gamble on one free agent who could help them reach that level again.

Newcastle transfer news

Whether it’s Bryan Mbeumo or Victor Osimhen, the transfer rumours are certainly coming thick and fast when it comes to recruits on Tyneside.

Those at St James’ Park have the opportunity to earn redemption after a summer of failure last time out left Eddie Howe short on reinforcements. As the Magpies continue to turn their form around on the pitch, sporting director Paul Mitchell must do the same away from the action.

Osimhen would be a particularly impressive signing given his strong links to Chelsea in recent seasons and the mouth-watering partnership that he could form with Alexander Isak.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

If Newcastle are looking to make their return to the Champions League after enjoying some moments to savour among Europe’s elite last season, signing players of such calibre should be the way forward. And that has seemingly left them prepared to take quite the risk.

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are now willing to take a gamble by signing Paul Pogba on a free deal in 2025, with the Frenchman thought to be a main target.

The midfielder was initially banned for four years in February after tests found that he had an elevated level of testosterone in his system. However, that ban has since been reduced to 18 months, which will see Pogba make his return in March next year.

Now a free agent after leaving Juventus, the former Manchester United man could yet make a sensational return to the Premier League courtesy of Newcastle. Those at Old Trafford often failed to get the best out of him, but the Magpies could yet get the World Cup winner at the heart of their side.

"Fantastic" Pogba is worth the gamble

For a side like Newcastle, who are desperately looking to break into the top four and then maintain their place, taking risks is a must. Welcoming Pogba without having to splash out on a transfer fee and therefore reducing the risk of profit and sustainability questions should be a no-brainer for those at St James’ Park.

Of course, the age-old question is how a team can get the best out of the Frenchman, but Howe may yet have the answer. Next to a midfield duo of a battling Brazilian in Joelinton and the more technical and assured Bruno Guimaraes, Pogba could have the licence to play his best football and seek the ultimate redemption after recent troubles.

Whilst his time at Old Trafford ended in a case of what might have been, Pogba was at the centre of praise from former teammate Juan Mata when his form saw the Frenchman lose his starting place:

He said: “I’m sure he will keep showing how good a player he is and how nice a guy he is.

“We know Paul is looking forward to playing good, to do the best for the team and try to perform at his level because we all know when he does that he is a fantastic midfielder.”
