Speaking at a press conference ahead of Como's home fixture against Torino on Sunday evening, the Serie A manager — who took charge of the club permanently in August 2024 and has solidified their top-flight status this season — noted the interest Diao has been receiving across Europe after a highly promising start to his career.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

After signing from Real Betis last summer, Diao has impressed in his first season in Italy, registering seven goal contributions from 13 appearances. The 19-year-old's form led to him receiving his first senior international call-up for Senegal in March, after he decided to switch his allegiance from his native country Spain.

WHAT FABREGAS SAID

Fabregas said: "There is no mentality of speculating and selling, they come here to grow and improve the team. Then obviously, Manchester [United] can come and ask for Diao by offering €40m, but it is not a given that he will leave. The objective is to create a path, with players who are functional to the characteristics, working with them. Obviously the value increases, but the important thing is that they are the right players for us.”

Fabregas' comments come amid intense speculation about the teenager's future, with Manchester United mentioned specifically by the Spaniard following reports that Amorim's club is interested in Diao. The pull of the Red Devils will be hard to resist; however, Como are clearly willing to put up a fight, so securing the youngster's services won't be easy for the Premier League outfit.

Issy Wong double-strike, Nat Sciver's 169* keep England on top on rain-hit day

South Africa three wickets down and still 78 runs behind heading into final day

Issy Wong provided the spark on a gloomy evening to put England firmly in control heading into the final day of their Test with South Africa. After hours of watching rain fall, 20-year-old debutant Wong removed dangerous opener Laura Wolvaardt for the second time in the match after also dismissing Lara Goodall to take two wickets in as many overs.Nat Sciver has been at the heart of the action throughout this match, her unbeaten 169 allowing England to declare 133 runs ahead and she took two crucial catches as South Africa were reduced to 55 for 3 at the close on the third day, still 82 runs in arrears.Play only resumed at 6.30pm local time after a second rain delay lasting nearly three hours and, with just 11 balls bowled, the rain returned, although play continued and the shower passed. It was just as well for England when Wong had Goodall caught behind by Amy Jones amid an excellent spell, firing the ball in full down the leg side and catching a faint edge as it passed by.Wong then claimed the prize wicket of Wolvaardt for just 16, edging to gully where Sciver took a sharp catch diving to her right. The weather was surely a factor in the timing of England’s sporting declaration with about half an hour left in the morning session. And while it left Sciver 20 runs shy of Betty Snowball’s record for the highest Test score by an England Women’s player, set in 1935, the fact that more rain is forecast for the final day and that England were keen to force a result, team goals took precedence over personal milestones.Sciver was in the action again when England made an early breakthrough in South Africa’s second innings, Kate Cross claiming her fifth wicket for the match when she invited Andrie Steyn to drive at a ball pitched up just outside off stump and got an edge to fly to gully, where Sciver took a sound, low catch.England then thought Cross had Goodall out lbw but their attempts to overturn umpire Anna Harris’ not-out decision failed when the DRS confirmed that Goodall had put bat on ball. Moments later rain arrived and the players sprinted from the field.Only another eight overs were bowled when play resumed with South Africa closing the gap to 106 before another heavy shower brought about an early tea.Earlier, Sciver, 119 not out overnight, surpassed Marizanne Kapp’s 150 in South Africa’s first innings. Having resumed with a 44-run advantage, Sciver and Sophie Ecclestone added another 65 runs in the first hour of the day, both finding the boundary with relative ease as they looked to accelerate.Sciver had shared a 207-run partnership for the sixth wicket with old schoolmate Alice Davidson-Richards, who fell on the final ball of the second day with a century on Test debut to her name.Anneke Bosch dropped a return catch off Ecclestone, on 18 at the time, in her second over of the day, the firmly struck chance slipping through her hands during her follow-through. Then Sciver immediately picked off consecutive boundaries, pulled through square leg and cracked over midwicket. She brought up her 150 a short time later pushing Nonkululeko Mlaba to long on for a single.Ecclestone fell for a handy 35 when walking across her stumps trying to clip Mlaba towards fine leg she was struck on the front pad in line with leg stump.Cross’ dismissal four balls later prompted England’s declaration after Sciver hit another Mlaba delivery towards midwicket where Nadine de Klerk gathered and threw to the non-striker’s end. Cross had turned back but failed to ground her bat.Sciver had admitted the previous evening that the desire to put on a show in the context of wider discussions about the future of women’s Tests, had been raised in the England camp before the match.”We spoke about that before we started the game,” she said. “And yeah, there were comments that didn’t support women’s Test matches, which is not something that we agree with so we are playing I guess in the limelight after that comment a little bit. So yeah, we want to push for a result.”For me, I didn’t take it out onto the pitch. We spoke about it a little bit before the game but when I’m out there, we’re playing cricket, we’re playing for each other, we’re playing for our team.”With only seven wickets needed, the hosts’ prospects of that looked brighter, provided the weather doesn’t play too big a factor. Sune Luus was unbeaten on 4 at the close alongside nightwatcher Tumi Sekhukhune on 1.

'The most outrageous hour I've seen in Test cricket' – Stuart Broad

Veteran seamer says new coach McCullum has made an impact already

Alan Gardner15-Jun-2022Brendon McCullum urged England to “attack the danger” during their run chase in Nottingham, with the result being what Stuart Broad called “the most outrageous hour I’ve seen in Test cricket”.Broad was padded up and watching on from the dressing room at Trent Bridge as Jonny Bairstow blew the doors off England’s chase of 299, hitting 93 off 44 balls after tea on the final day. Comparing the game to Headingley 2019, when Ben Stokes guided England to victory after a 76-run partnership for the final wicket, Broad said the win over New Zealand had been just as astounding.”Baz’s team talk was very much ‘let’s attack the danger, let’s run towards the danger’ and every part of your mind is going for this win,” he said. “Whoever is to come, the changing room has full belief that you can do your job to get the win. So it was never really a case of, if we lose one we might shut up shop. It was always we’re going to win. And if it doesn’t work, don’t worry about it, but we’re going to go for the win.”But I didn’t quite expect to see what I saw from Jonny. It was the most outrageous hour I’ve seen in Test cricket from a partnership. Obviously Headingley had incredible nerves. I felt sick watching that tight thing with Leach and Stokesy. But that was just exhilarating, astonishing. Trent Bridge giving out free tickets, I’m sure there were people in this ground who have never watched Test cricket before. How inspiring is that?”At Headingley, you could cut the atmosphere with a knife and it felt very nerve-wracking, you were sick with seeing what’s coming. Whereas that was just about shouting every time a boundary happened. I saw a stat that showed in nine overs they scored 102 after tea. It wasn’t as if Baz said ‘go and whack it, go and slog it’. It was just play with the mindset that we’re going to chase these runs down. And Jonny just got hold of a few pull shots that got him going. That striking was… only a handful of players in the world can do that. Johnny is obviously in that group.”Related

Broad said that “there’s no doubt Baz has had an impact already”, with various members of the team having spoken already about the mantra of relentless positivity that has accompanied McCullum’s arrival as Test coach.”He was absolutely buzzing that we got 380 on day three,” Broad said. “It didn’t matter how many wickets, it was the run rate. How good is that? 380 in a day, well batted lads. It’s not just praising guys who get a hundred, it’s tiny little things, bits of fielding, momentum changes in the game. He will bring attention to that.”He looks like a guy who has a cricket brain that is working all the time. He is thinking how we can change the game. That doesn’t mean he’s saying ‘what about this or that’ every minute. I feel like he’s got an energy of not letting the game sit, where can we manoeuvre it to.”At tea today, the way he spoke two-three minutes before the bell, he didn’t say I’d prefer to lose than draw, but it was that mindset – it was going for a win at all costs. I want to win, find your way to do that. You have my full backing, Stokes’ full backing to go get the win.”The effect has been clear on both batting and bowling. England scored at a rate of 4.7 runs per over during the Trent Bridge Test, and continued to set attacking fields as New Zealand made 553 in their first innings. Broad struggled somewhat, with figures of 2 for 107, but saw chances go down off Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell.”I didn’t bowl that well in the first innings, but it felt like any mistake I made on length and line it went for four,” he said. “I felt like it got even quicker as the game went on. Could we have bowled dry? Potentially, but that is a different day if we snaffle a couple of catches. [Daryl] Mitchell went down, Blundell, Nicholls. The mindset is, how do we get more fielders in wicket-taking positions rather than protection, which gives us a better chance of bowling them out?”In the second innings, Broad helped bring about crucial breakthroughs. On the fourth evening, Blundell was held by Stokes in a catching position at backward square leg to end another potentially pivotal fifth-wicket stand; then on day five, with New Zealand edging further in front, Broad’s short ball again did the trick as a change to the field tempted Matt Henry into hooking and opened up the game.”How it’s affected me is that rather than having the bloke 20 yards further back to stop the four, it’s if he strikes it well and he’s 20 yards in, he could catch it,” Broad said. “It’s a tiny little mindset change, but it’s about getting wickets, not stopping boundaries.”My role as a bowler [on day four] was how could we take 10 wickets here and get us over the line. Although it wasn’t the classical seven – it’s not like we guided them out with skill and pressure, we got seven wickets through the momentum of the game really. And once we got a sniff… I came this morning feeling very relaxed. I felt like we were going to win the game.”

Getty25Brooke Aspin (Chelsea)

2024: After signing for Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Aspin spent the 2023-24 season back on loan with former club Bristol City, but her time with the Robins would end on a sour note as they suffered relegation from the Women's Super League. For the 2024-25 season, Aspin again went out on loan, this time to newly-promoted WSL side Crystal Palace. However, a devastating ACL injury in November cut that spell short.

2025: Aspin's focus for the forthcoming year is on her recovery from that knee injury, with her unlikely to feature again in the 2024-25 season as a result of it.

Advertisement(C)Getty Images24Toko Koga (Feyenoord)

2024: Koga made the leap overseas, joined Dutch side Feyenoord and started all of the club's final 11 league games of the season after breaking into the line-up in late January. The defender's year would yet get bigger, too, as she was included in Japan's squad for the Olympic women's football tournament in France. There, Koga started three of Nadeshiko's four games, including the heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in extra time to the United States in the quarter-finals.

2025: Koga has continued to assert herself at Feyenoord in the 2024-25 season, starting every league game to date and even netting a trio of goals, including a brace in the 5-3 win over Excelsior. For Japan, she scored the winner against the United States in February as her country won the SheBelieves Cup.

Getty Images23Liana Joseph (Lyon)

2024: Joseph enjoyed her first involvements with the U20s, included in the squad that travelled to Colombia for that year's World Cup. She only made one start, in the group stage against Fiji, but marked it with four goals. Joseph would also add to her lone appearance for Lyon's world-class first team, getting two more chances to impress in the latter stages of the 2023-24 season.

2025: After remaining at Lyon for the first half of the 2024-25 campaign, making just one league appearance, Joseph moved to Strasbourg on loan in the New Year. Regularly involved with France's U19s now, it's anticipated that she will travel with the team to their European Championships this summer, should they qualify.

Imagn Images22Amanda Allen (Orlando Pride)

2024: After making 11 appearances for the Orlando Pride in the NWSL and the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup, albeit just one start, Allen was loaned to USL Super League side Lexington in September. There, she made nine starts, but did not end her goal drought. That has unfortunately continued with the Canada youth teams, too. Allen was part of the U20 side that reached the quarter-finals of their World Cup, starting all four games, but couldn't find the back of the net.

2025: Allen, now back at Orlando ahead of the new NWSL season, will hope for a more prolific 2025.

Jharkhand in the driver's seat after Kumar Kushagra and Virat Singh hit centuries

Quick centuries from middle-order batters Kumar Kushagra and Virat Singh helped Jharkhand score 402 for the loss of five wickets on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy pre-quarter-final against Nagaland at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The two added 175 for the fifth wicket in less than 36 overs, both finding the boundary almost at will – 17-year-old Kushagra hit 16 fours and a six, and Virat hit 13 fours. While wicketkeeper-batter Kushagra got to his landmark off just 105 balls, Virat reached his second century of the season, after getting 103 in a tight win against Delhi, from 141 deliveries, as Nagaland lost the grip after four wickets halfway into the day. And despite left-arm spinner Imliwati Lemtur breaking the stand with the end of the day approaching, Kushagra, who ended unbeaten on 112, and No. 7 Anukul Roy took Jharkhand past 400 in only 87 overs of play. Both Kushagra and Virat, who fell for 107, rode their luck during the aggressive stand. With Virat on 78, his attempted loft over the covers in the 66th over landed just wide of a fielder’s outstretched hands. And two overs later, when Kushagra was on 44, he was dropped by the midwicket fielder, who only had to move slightly to his left to reach the ball. This, after he was also put down on 10.Earlier, all of Jharkhand’s top six got off to starts but Kumar Suraj’s 66 was the best effort. Like Kushagra and Virat after him, Suraj was positive at the crease, hitting 11 fours and a six in his innings of 91 balls. But the base was set by the openers Nazim Siddiqui and Utkarsh Singh, who started with 60 in the first 14 overs before right-arm quick Chopise Hopongkyu broke through.Nagaland tried seven bowlers on the day, five of whom got a wicket each, while as many conceded at least four runs an over to the opposition batters.

75% duels lost, 4/10 rating: The Celtic forward who was worse than Trusty

Celtic’s perfect start to the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign came to an end on Saturday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aberdeen at Parkhead.

Both teams had won their first seven matches in the division ahead of the big clash but neither side was able to make it eight wins in eight in the end.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate had given the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first-half, before second-half strikes from Ester Solker and Graeme Shinnie secured a point for the Dons.

It was the first time the Hoops had conceded more than one goal in a game in the league this season and centre-back Auston Trusty’s performance played a part in that.

Auston Trusty's performance against Aberdeen

The USA international, signed from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window, has been needed alongside Liam Scales in recent weeks due to the continued absence, through injury, of Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Celtic have not conceded a goal in five outings with the former Spurs titan at the back in the Premiership this term, whilst they have let in three goals in three league games with Trusty as a starter.

The ex-Blades dud was questionable for the equalising goal as he did not get close enough to the forward laying the ball off to Shinnie in the box and the defender then turned his body away from the ball and made himself smaller, which helped to spin the shot off his ankles and past Kasper Schmeichel.

Trusty did win six of his 11 duels, though, and made two interceptions and one block to help his side out defensively at points, but he will surely be disappointed with his involvement in Shinnie’s goal.

The American defender was not the worst performer on the pitch for the Hoops, though, as winger Daizen Maeda was even worse than the former Premier League flop.

Daizen Maeda's performance against Aberdeen

The Japan international started on the left wing and endured a frustrating afternoon against the Dons with a poor showing in and out of possession for the Scottish giants.

Daizen Maeda

Maeda, who had produced zero goals and zero assists and missed a ‘big chance’ against Ross County before the break, was incredibly ineffective at the top end of the pitch.

He was involved in the build-up to Kyogo’s goal but the winger got in down the left side and played a poor ball across the box, that was then dreadfully cleared by a defender straight to Hatate, whose effort then deflected for the striker to convert from close range.

As you can see in the table above, Maeda was a lightweight off the ball for the Hoops, losing 75% of his duels, and failed to register a shot on target or a ‘big chance’ created.

The winger was handed a 4/10 player rating by the Scotsman, who lamented his play on the ball and his concession of possession in the build-up to Shinnie’s goal, whilst they gave Trusty a score of 6/10.

Therefore, Maeda, who struggled in and out of possession throughout the game, was even worse than the centre-back and should be fearful of losing his place ahead of the clash with Atalanta.
