Hampshire stormed into the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast after a final round day of drama saw the two-time champions progress. The Hawks, who sat bottom of the South Group only a month ago, found their form at the right time, reeling off five successive wins and then saw results work in their favour on Sunday night following their thumping six-wicket win over Glamorgan at the Ageas Bowl.Hampshire started the day sitting in sixth spot in the South Group, needing to beat Glamorgan whilst bettering Surrey’s run rate then hope Gloucestershire and Sussex lost to Somerset and Kent respectively to have any hope of qualifying for the top-four.James Vince’s side held up their side of the bargain by blasting their way to a challenging 185-run target inside the 14.1 overs needed to usurp Surrey’s run rate. Although Sussex brushed aside a Kent side, who had already qualified, but had been depleted due to Covid-19, Somerset ensured James Vince’s side remain in with a chance to win a third Blast title with a 23-run victory over Gloucestershire.Vitality Blast quarter-finals

It capped off a superb week for Hampshire, who on Wednesday booked their spot in Division One of the County Championships by beating Gloucestershire before coming from nowhere to reach the last-eight of the Blast.yD’Arcy Short’s blazing 69 off 30 balls and a magnificent 43 off 13 from Joe Weatherley got the Hawks home in a match that yielded 24 sixes from both sides and included a fine knock of 78 from Glamorgan’s Australian Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne.Weatherley said belief was the key to the victory and credited the recent arrival of New Zealand allrounder Colin de Grandhomme as the catalyst to a change in mentality after the team’s T20 season looked dead and buried after a demoralising defeat to Surrey four weeks ago. de Grandhomme scored just 5 against Glamorgan and was overshadowed by Short’s brilliant knock, but Weatherley said his arrival has been a huge boost to the squad.”Colin has come in and showed us how to play and given us that confidence in the middle to go for it from ball one,” Weatherley said. “For me, one of the younger guys, I am just feeding off that and it makes things a lot easier.”It’s funny, when you are swimming against the tide it feels the hardest thing to win games and vice versa when you are going well. Of course we were going to do that today – it is that inner-confidence that at the start of the competition felt a million miles away. To have put ourselves in this position at this stage of the season is unbelievable.”We have put so much in over the last five matches and we have found a formula that works. It’s a real team effort, lots of guys have put their hands up, everyone is working hard for each other.”

Xavier totaliza 225 minutos neste Campeonato Brasileiro.

Jofra Archer goes wicketless on low-key return to the day job for Sussex seconds

England fast bowler bowls 11 overs without luck, as he tests his elbow after injury issues

Andrew Miller05-May-2021Jofra Archer produced a cautious but increasingly rhythmic day’s work on his return to bowling after his recent injury issues, as Surrey’s reserves resisted his advances on a rain-affected second day of their 2nd XI County Championship clash with Sussex at Hove.By the close, Surrey had eased along to 215 for 3 in reply to Sussex’s 487, with Ryan Patel’s unbeaten 94 providing the backbone of their innings. Patel added 115 for the third wicket with Laurie Evans, who made 46, and a further unbeaten stand of 53 with Nico Reifer (32), and has a chance to press on to his hundred on day three after being dropped at slip in the penultimate over.As for Archer, he returned figures of 0 for 32 in 11 overs, spread across two spells of six and five overs respectively, as he shelved any quest for pyrotechnics and set about road-testing his troublesome right elbow, with the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s now just under a month away. His introduction came in a 25-minute burst with the new ball before lunch, after Surrey’s spinner Dan Moriarty had picked off Sussex’s last three wickets for the hard-earned figures of 4 for 122 in 38.3 overs. The home side’s mainstay was the 19-year-old Oliver Carter, who was last man out for a fine 160 – the first score of note of his professional career, and one which showcased an unflappable temperament and an excellent straight-lined technique, as he added a further 50 runs to his overnight 110.When his turn finally came, Archer might have picked up a wicket straightaway, as Surrey’s 19-year-old opener Ben Geddes – perhaps a little daunted by the reputation steaming in towards him – flinched his first ball airily off the pads and into a gap on the leg side. But he was more confidently forward for the remainder of an exploratory over, before picking off a brace of boundaries as Archer twice overpitched to ease along to 9 not out at the break.Jofra Archer continued his comeback from injury•Getty ImagesIt was left to Will Sheffield, Sussex’s young left-arm seamer, to upstage his senior partner in the wickets column, although he won’t be encouraging too many of his friends and family to seek out his efforts on the ECB live stream. His first ball after lunch was a pie to end all pies – a hip-high full toss, swinging invitingly down the leg side, but Geddes – with his guard down – could only look on in horror as he clipped the offering straight into the pocket of square leg.Sheffield’s second was an improvement but hardly a jaffa – an inviting outswinging half-volley that Will Jacks cuffed on the up to short cover. At which point Archer, commandeering a plumb position at first slip in his “Sharks” woolly hat, must have assumed it was not to be his day.Sure enough, Archer’s fortunes in his eighth over – the second of his new spell, after a 90-minute rain delay – rather summed things up. His first delivery, short and sitting up outside off, was clattered through mid-on by Patel to bring up the fifty stand. Two balls later, with Patel on 42, third slip couldn’t cling on to his right as Archer jammed the splice with one of his sharpest deliveries of the day.And before the over was out, he’d given away five penalty runs too, as the keeper allowed himself to be nutmegged by a length ball outside off, which then rolled into short leg’s helmet, perched behind him.And that was broadly the end of that as far as Archer’s day was concerned. Joe Pocklington entered the attack with his left-arm spin, as did Luke Benkenstein – son of Durham’s Championship-winning captain Dale – whom Reifer launched over deep midwicket shortly before Patel’s late let-off. There will be stiffer tests ahead for Archer, but at least he’s back on the park.

Initially expected to miss the remainder of the season due to ACL and meniscus damage in his right knee – sustained during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in September – the Spaniard now aims to return earlier than predicted. The initial prognosis suggested a recovery period of up to 10 months, placing Rodri's return well into next season. However, the 27-year-old is keen to expedite his rehabilitation, viewing the journey as both a physical and mental challenge.

    WHAT RODRI SAID

In an interview with Rodri said: "There is the information that the surgeon gives you, who wants everything to go well and it extends up to 10 months or so. I'm trying to set a date for myself. For reasons of my mind, I'm trying to finish this season."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

City earned their spot in the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup by winning the Champions League in 2023. Rodri played a pivotal role in that triumph, scoring the decisive goal in the final against Inter. The revamped tournament, modelled on the World Cup, will feature eight groups of four teams followed by a knockout stage. Running from June 15 to mid-July, the event provides Rodri with a concrete goal to work toward as he recovers.

"Every year they are longer and I think I will make it," he said. "I don't know how much I will be able to participate, but with the Nations League and Club World Cup at the end, June-July, I think so."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

Rodri’s absence has coincided with a turbulent period for City, marking one of the most challenging stretches in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career. The reigning Premier League champions have lost four consecutive matches, a first for Guardiola, including back-to-back league defeats to Bournemouth and Brighton. After the international break, City will look to rebound with a challenging Premier League clash against Tottenham on November 23.

Liverpool also monitoring "talented" £58,000-per-week Crystal Palace target

With Liverpool's search for a midfielder heating up, they've also reportedly turned their attention towards finding a replacement for Joel Matip and now appreciate a player Crystal Palace have eyed to fill the potential void left by Marc Guehi.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have finally burst into life in the summer transfer window, stealing the spotlight with their pursuit of Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. The central midfielder would complete Liverpool's rebuild in the middle of the park which initially began last summer with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

Martin Zubimendi

Whilst those at Anfield are yet to agree a deal for the Euro 2024 winner, talks are reportedly ongoing and Liverpool are confident that a deal is there to be done this month. It's not just the middle of the park that they're looking to strengthen, however.

Following Matip's exit at the end of his contract earlier this summer, Arne Slot has been left with a defensive void to fill. Whilst he still has Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah to call on, injury concerns within that group means that the Dutchman could still do with an added option. And that's where a Bundesliga star could come in.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool now appreciate Maxence Lacroix and could yet turn towards the Wolfsburg defender this summer. The Reds aren't the only side eyeing a move, however.

Recent reports have claimed that Crystal Palace see Lacroix as an option to replace Marc Guehi amid interest from Newcastle United in the England defender. Alas, any fears that the Eagles could swoop in and land a deal should be eased by rumours that they've just rejected a second bid for their star defender, negating the need for Lacroix at this time to give Liverpool a simpler task should they want to take advantage.

"Talented" Lacroix can fill Matip void

Earning a reported £58k-a-week, Lacroix's prime should be approaching at 24 years old, making now the best time to complete a big move away from Wolfsburg and to the Premier League. Without the pressure of hitting the ground running as a starter at Liverpool, thanks to competition from Van Dijk, Konate and Quansah, Lacroix would be an ideal replacement for Matip.

Whilst Lacroix would struggle to replicate Matip's ball-carrying ability, he managed to maintain an impressive number of progressive passes to highlight just how he could cut through an opposition press using a different tactic.

The Frenchman has earned plenty of praise during his time in the Bundesliga, including from former Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels, who said via the league's official website: “He arrived here from France and I was amazed at how well he adapted to the level here. He’s a very talented boy.”

Now, it's Liverpool who may benefit from that talent by signing a player they reportedly appreciate before the end of the summer transfer window at the end of the month.

Lee Carsley left in the dark over FA's plans to hire Thomas Tuchel as interim boss reveals new England manager has not been in touch

England interim boss Lee Carsley has revealed he had no clue the FA were going to hire Thomas Tuchel as Three Lions head coach.

Carsley unaware of Tuchel appointmentHas not spoken to the to-be Three Lions bossInterim boss set to take on his final two matchesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley was appointed as the England interim boss in July after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his post as head coach following the Three Lions' Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in Berlin. Initially the England Under-21 manager, he will now oversee the senior side's last two Nations League group-stage clashes against Greece and the Republic of Ireland before newly appointed boss Tuchel takes over the side on January 1. However, Carsley has revealed that he did not know that Tuchel would be the one to take over from him until the FA's announcement in October, despite the German having signed his contract much earlier.

AdvertisementWHAT CARSLEY SAID

When asked by the media whether he knew about Tuchel having been signed before his side's 2-1 loss to Greece on October 10, Carsley said: "No. I can’t remember to be honest.

"My focus was massively on the games, on the camp. In terms of the timeline, it has been spoken about within the press conference that they [the FA] did. In terms of my position in that I’m really comfortable with the way that it was handled. I didn’t feel undermined or anything like that."

During the press conference, Carsley was also asked if he had been in extended contact with Tuchel ahead of the Nations League clashes. He replied: "No. I think with the press conference they [the FA] had, it was quite clear in terms of the starting date.

"He is fully respectful that I am in charge at the moment. That is the priority. I do not feel hard done by or shunned. If anything I look forward to hopefully create a situation where we can hand over a healthy squad of players to the new coach and his squad."

Carsley did, however, concede he had texted Tuchel to congratulate him on landing the permanent job.

Newcastle can forget Trafford in move for ace who’d elevate their CL bid

Ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been working tirelessly to try and bolster his side in the attempt to return to some form of European competition.

The goalkeeper department has been a cause for concern for the Magpies, with number one Nick Pope missing over four months of the campaign due to a shoulder injury.

He was subsequently replaced by backup shot-stopper Martin Dubravka, who looked shaky at times and unable to match the quality demanded by a side pushing to finish inside the Champions League places.

As a result, Howe has been desperately delving into the market to find a suitable upgrade on the pair, with Giorgi Mamardashvili looking the main target at one point.

However, Newcastle refused to meet the £35m valuation of the Georgian, with the club exploring other options as a result in their hunt for a new shot-stopper.

Newcastle's current goalkeeping situation

In recent weeks, the Magpies have ramped up their efforts to sign Burnley's James Trafford, following the Clarets’ relegation back to the Championship.

James Trafford for Burnley.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the club have already agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old, but the two sides remain some distance away from agreeing a fee for his services.

Howe’s side were claimed to have had a £15m bid rejected for the former England U21 international, but Burnley are demanding a higher fee to make a profit on the signing, with former side Manchester City having a 20% sell-on fee.

Whilst Trafford has the potential to turn into an excellent Premier League goalkeeper, with the deal seemingly at a standstill, Newcastle may have to continue to explore other options if they are to bolster their ranks.

The club have also previously been linked with another talented goalkeeper, potentially needing to re-open talks for his signature, proving to be a better option than Howe’s current preferred choice.

Newcastle can forget Trafford in move for talented goalkeeper

Since the end of the 2023/24 season, Newcastle have been linked with a move for out-of-favour Arsenal ‘keeper Aaron Ramsdale, who could be allowed to leave the Emirates this summer.

He’s fallen down the pecking order, losing his number one spot to David Raya, with Ramsdale needing a fresh start to reach his full potential.

Despite his lack of game time, he’s still managed to feature a handful of times in the Premier League, producing an array of better stats than Howe’s main target.

He’s managed to concede fewer goals per 90 over the course of the last 12 months, also managing to achieve a higher pass completion rate than Trafford despite his ball-playing abilities.

The “world-class” Arsenal talent, as described by former professional footballer Steve Nicol, has also demonstrated his quality without the ball, claiming 17% of the crosses into the box compared to Trafford’s tally of just 7%.

Ramsdale would undoubtedly be a huge upgrade on any of the club's current goalkeepers, given his proven quality in the Premier League, with Howe needing to push for a move to sign the 26-year-old ahead of Trafford if they have any ambitions of pushing for a Champions League spot next season.

Spurs in talks to sign £68m England gem who’s similar to Musiala

Tottenham have started their summer transfer window with purpose, acquiring Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray for around £40m, and Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden for £8.5m.

Ange Postecoglou will be happy with the investment so far ahead of the next Premier League season, getting some very promising young midfielders, but attention could now turn to some forward reinforcements, to help the likes of Son Heung-min in the next campaign, spearheading the attack.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Son scored 17 goals in 36 appearances last season for Spurs, with the next-best tally coming from Richarlison, netting 12 goals in his 31 appearances. They were the only two players to get double-digit goal tallies.

Tottenham chasing England international

According to reports from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are seriously considering a move for Crystal Palace star, Eberechi Eze.

It is understood Eze is open to offers, and he has a release clause of £60m plus £8m in add-ons. It's reported that there has been talks with agents to discover the potential terms of a deal.

The reports also state Spurs interest in Rennes winger Desire Doue. However, with his fee possibly being inflated towards that similar £60m fee that Eze would cost, it could deter Tottenham from getting involved.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

The England international could add that extra creative spark in attacking areas for the Lilywhites, with an ability to add goals from open play and set pieces too. The 26-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions for Palace last season, scoring 11 goals, and providing six assists.

How Eze is similar to Euro 2024 star Jamal Musiala

The players rank as each other's closest "similar player" via FBref's compare feature, and whilst one has been lighting Euro 2024 up, the other has made a few appearances from the bench, but the similarities in their styles of play and best qualities are worth speaking on.

Musiala – once of Chelsea – made 38 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season, scoring 12 goals, and providing eight assists. The German also started all five of Germany's Euro 2024 games, scoring three goals.

Both players want to be heavily involved in the attacking third, whether it's creating chances for others, or finding space for a shot themselves. Eze only got three fewer G/A for Palace last season, as Musiala got for Bayern, and this was playing in a far worse side.

Both players love to beat their man, taking players on and using their high level of dribbling to create chances and advantages. Eze averages 3.02 successful take-ons per 90, but surprisingly only averages 2.98 progressive carries per 90.

Whilst Musiala averages 4.07 successful take-ons per 90, ranking him in the top 1% of wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe for this metric, but also averages 5.3 progressive carries per 90, nearly double Eze in this stat. Either way, they are both very strong ball carriers who love to make things happen in the final third.

Jamal Musiala

The fact Musiala makes more could well be down to the fact Musiala is playing in a much more ball-dominant team, where teams sit off a bit deeper and progressive carries are important to breaking the lines, whilst Palace for large parts of the season, were hitting teams on the break.

So, by putting Eze in a possession-orientated side, he would get far more frequent chances to carry the ball and get into 1v1 situations, which would see vast improvements in his other metrics, and also his G/A output on a better side.

Ashton Agar and Shaun Marsh set up Western Australia to press for win

Ashton Agar and Shaun Marsh led a dominant display for Western Australia to give them a lead of 362 and set up a final day victory push against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield match at Karen Rolton Oval.Having begun proceedings at 1 for 178, the Redbacks lost the centurion Jake Weatherald just the fourth ball of the morning as he hung his bat out to a Cameron Gannon delivery outside the off stump, and never again regained control of their destiny.Agar followed up his century in the company of Josh Inglis by twirling his way to five wickets, starting with Travis Head when the South Australia captain top edged an attempt to clear the midwicket boundary. Gaining some appreciable turn out of the footmarks, Agar conjured a classic to bowl Harry Nielsen between bat and pad, and with a trio of tail-end wickets claimed his last four victims for seven runs in 53 balls – taking his figures from 1 for 96 in 22.4 overs to 5 for 103 in 33.The displays of Agar, Lloyd Pope and Mitchell Swepson will all be sources of encouragement for the national selectors, as spin has played a far larger role in the first two Shield games than was the case for the vast majority of last summer on a succession of grassy surfaces. The Redbacks had lost nine wickets for 134 on a friendly batting surface, giving the Warriors plenty of time to build their lead in the final session, and of the batsmen to appear on day three, only Brad Davis and the stranded Liam Scott could be even moderately happy with their efforts.Sam Whiteman was an early casualty in Western Australia’s second innings, touching a bouncer from Chadd Sayers through to Nielsen, but from there Marsh took complete control of the game with Cameron Bancroft working the ball around at the other end.Marsh was able to take advantage of some loose stuff from Pope, who was far too variable in his length, while of the other bowlers only Scott’s medium pacers were able to restrict the flow of runs in any meaningful way. This meant that the lead accrued quickly, even to the point that Marsh might have been able to consider a declaration late in the day.Instead, he was content to bat through to stumps and in doing so reach a century scored with ease, with Bancroft falling to a terrific running catch by Tom Cooper from what became the final ball of the day. Agar’s spin out of the footmarks will be critical to the tale of the fourth innings.
