Nottingham Forest monitoring versatile midfielder up for sale at just £8m

Nottingham Forest have their eye on a new midfielder as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to strengthen his team this month, according to a recent report.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

The Reds find themselves in an unexpected Premier League title race, as well as a race to secure their place in next season’s Champions League. Given where Forest are, this month is perhaps a chance for Nuno and Co. to go for broke and strengthen the side in an attempt to pull off the unthinkable.

Imagine him & Luiz: Nottingham Forest targeting "one of the best forwards"

Nottingham Forest have wasted no time in targeting reinforcements in January.

ByEthan Lamb Jan 11, 2025

Speculation has started to gather pace in recent days, with former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz linked with a move to the City Ground. The Brazilian joined Juventus in the summer, but the move has yet to work out, and he could now find himself back in the Premier League, helping Villa’s Midlands rivals on loan.

Meanwhile, as well as being interested in signing Luiz, Forest are also readying a fresh attempt to sign Baris Alper Yilmaz from Galatasaray. The Turkish giants have already rejected an offer from the Reds and remain confident they can keep hold of the winger. However, there is still over two weeks remaining in this transfer window, so Forest may not have given up just yet.

Nottingham Forest monitoring £8m versatile midfielder

If a deal for Luiz doesn’t work out, according to Turkish outlet Taka Gazete, relayed by Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest could turn their attention to Batista Mendy, who they are monitoring ahead of a possible move.

The 25-year-old, who is predominantly a defensive midfielder but can also operate at centre-back, plays for Turkish side Trabzonspor and has done so since September 2023. Mendy started his career at FC Nantes, but he soon moved to Angers SCO, impressing in Ligue 1 with over 70 matches combined for both sides, and that earned him his move to Turkey, where he has continued to play well.

The midfielder is under contract until the summer of 2027, but a move could be on the cards this month, as Forest hold a long-term interest. This report states that the Reds are monitoring Mendy’s situation after being linked with a move to the City Ground a few months ago.

Trabzonspor are under no pressure to sell the player, but it is reported that they will listen to offers for Mendy. However, they will only negotiate if an offer of €10 million, which is roughly £8 million, is made. At this stage, there are no signs that Forest have made an offer to sign Mendy this month, but he could become an option for the club if they require a new midfielder and if a deal for Luiz doesn’t work out.

Man Utd hoping to receive £15m financial boost from Mason Greenwood transfer as PSG, Bayern Munich and Barcelona eye up move for Marseille forward

Manchester United could be set to receive a huge sum of money from any transfer Mason Greenwood makes away from Marseille.

United have sell-on clauseGreenwood in prolific form for MarseilleNumber of clubs interested in forwardFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

When United sold the forward to the French club, report that they negotiated a future sell-on clause worth up to 50 per cent into the deal. This could see the club net as much as £15 million (€17m/$19km)as he is currently valued at around £30m (€35m/$38m). United suspended the player after he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, by the police and he did not play for the club again. The charges were dropped and he moved on loan to Getafe and then permanently to Marseille where he has scored 15 goals in 26 Ligue 1 appearances.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite his goalscoring form at Marseille, it appears the forward has fallen out of favour with head coach Roberto De Zerbi. His exile from the team could lower the transfer valuation Marseille hold for the player and, amid interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich, United's cash windfall could be lessened. Greenwood has not been selected by the Italian for their past two fixtures and appears to have serious work to do to win De Zerbi back around.

WHAT DE ZERBI SAID

The Italian boss said: "I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough. If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined. Otherwise, we as a team always fall back into the same pattern: a very good match, then a defeat at Auxerre, then a victory against Nantes… It’s too irregular, it’s like waves. And that’s something I don’t like.”

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

The former United forward is attempting to send a message to his head coach by turning up early to training, but he will have to show more than just a willingness to recover what seems a broken relationship. Whether Greenwood will return to the team when Marseille travel to Reims next weekend remains to be seen.

Erling Haaland told ‘10 years is a very long time’ after signing decade-long contract with Man City as club legend casts doubt on ‘world’s No.1 striker’ seeing out deal

Questions have been asked of whether Erling Haaland will honour his contract at Manchester City, with it pointed out that “10 years is a long time”.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Premier League champions City have moved to tie their prolific Norwegian striker down to a deal that is due to run until the summer of 2034. Haaland is considered to be a key part of present and future plans at the Etihad Stadium.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is easy to see why City would want such terms in place, with the 24-year-old frontman hitting 118 goals through 136 appearances. Haaland has collected major honours at home and abroad, but has also generated plenty of transfer talk when it comes to supposed interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

  • WHAT RICHARD DUNNE SAID

Quizzed on whether Haaland will see out a decade-long deal in Manchester, former City captain Richard Dunne – speaking in association with – told GOAL: “It’s unheard of, a contract that length. It’s exceptional that he’s got something like that.

“I suppose the couple of seasons that he’s had have proven what he can do. It’s a case of can he do it for that length of time? I’m sure he can, but things change an awful lot in football and 10 years is a very long time.

“If he’s still there, brilliant. At the moment he’s the No.1 striker in world football. If City can keep him, that’s amazing. But also for the Premier League, to have him for that amount of time. Whether he actually goes and sees that deal out remains to be seen.”

  • Getty/GOAL

    DID YOU KNOW?

If Haaland were to hang around at City, then he will likely rewrite the history books. Pressed on the possibility of every record being broken if 10 more years are spent at the Etihad, Dunne added: “You would imagine. On paper, yeah. Given what he’s done so far, yes. But, he still has to score nearly 30 goals every season. It’s still a huge ask and an incredible achievement what he’s doing at the moment.

“It looks like he’s the one that would break [Alan] Shearer’s record and set records that would never be beaten again. To keep that consistency over a period of time isn’t the easiest. We have seen it this season, where he has probably not got the goals that he expected. Man City haven’t had the season that they would’ve expected.

“It will happen over the course of the next 10 years and might not happen again. It’s hard but any man playing football at the moment that you thought had a chance of breaking all the records, he is certainly the one. Given the amount of time that he is hopefully going to be there, he’s got a real opportunity to do it.”

Rohit 'looking forward to playing all games' but admits managing workload will be key

“We’ve already seen a lot of injuries within our squad so we have got to be careful with what we do with individuals and how we rotate them”

Rohit: ‘Bumrah, KL and Pant are looked upon as leaders in the team’

When Virat Kohli announced his resignation as India’s Test captain, the most straightforward choice was to hand over all three formats to Rohit Sharma. Rohit’s place is guaranteed in all three formats, he is experienced, and he has led his IPL side with distinction. However, it took the selectors a while to arrive at that conclusion because they wanted to be sure of Rohit’s fitness given the hectic schedules.Rohit said he is aware of the need to manage his workload, but also assured he was in prime conditioning having recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the South Africa tour.”As far as I am concerned, at the moment there are no issues,” Rohit said. “I am looking forward to playing all the games. The workload always depends on what happens thereafter. You take it day by day, and understand what you need to do. If there is an opportunity for you to take a break, you will take the break and let someone get in and see how what kind of potential the other guy filling in has. Those are the things. But at the moment it seems to be okay.”Related

Eventually, though, there will be a point when his workload will have to be managed. “I am very clear in my mind as to how I want to take this forward,” Rohit said. “Obviously managing the workload, not just me but everyone, will be the key going forward. We have already seen a lot of injuries within our squad so we have just got to be very careful with what we do with individuals and how we rotate them and how we give them that break time that they need away from the game. So we are trying to manage that, we are trying to put a roadmap in place as to how we want to move forward.”There is no time frame on Rohit’s captaincy stint, but Chetan Sharma, the chairman of selectors, said they were going to use however long the 34-year-old’s reign lasts to groom younger leaders. Through the choices made for vice-captains during different series, India seem to have zeroed in on Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah as the leaders in the longer run.Rohit was asked what his role would be in grooming a new captain for India.”I won’t have that much role to tell them everything,” Rohit said. “Obviously they are all mature cricketers, but it’s just that someone needs to be there around to help them, guide them, in difficult situations. And I will be more than happy to do that. That’s how we have grown into the role. We were groomed by someone else. So it’s a natural process. Everyone goes through this. We are no different here.”If you talk of Bumrah, KL, Pant, all these guys have a big role to play in India’s success. At the same time they are looked upon as leaders as well. They do understand what they need to do as individuals. At the same time they realise there is a responsibility on their shoulders. You don’t want to put any pressure on these guys. They are critical to us. At the moment you want them to enjoy their game, come out freely, and execute their skills.”

Lina Souloukou could join Everton as new CEO after controversial Roma exit

It is entirely possible that Dan Friedkin decides to make a surprise backroom appointment at Everton, according to an intriguing new update.

Latest Everton news

The Friedkin Group are already looking to make their presence felt at Goodison Park, having acquired Farhad Moshiri’s majority share in the club, hopefully heralding the beginning of an exciting new era for the Blues.

On the transfer front, they are reportedly looking to beat Manchester United to the signing of teenage Fluminense forward Kaua Elias, looking to get the better of Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the process. They are also believed to be battling with Chelsea for Bologna attacking ace Santiago Castro.

Dan Friedkin for AS Roma.

The future of Sean Dyche as manager is also a major talking point and something that The Friedkin Group have to consider, with the Englishman battling to save his job after a less-than-satisfactory start to the new Premier League season – one that has seen just one win come their way into the opening seven matches.

A recent update claimed that Everton were looking at bringing back former boss David Moyes on an interim basis, prior to replacing him with Jose Mourinho at the end of the season, in what would be a blockbuster appointment ahead of the move to Bramley Moore Dock next summer. They aren’t the only individuals reportedly being eyed up, however, with current Besiktas manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst also seen as an option.

Friedkin eyeing big appointment at Everton

According to a fresh update from Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Everton boss Friedkin could “absolutely” hire Lina Souloukou as the Blues’ new CEO, in a high-profile backroom appointment.

This is despite The Friedkin Group sacking her from the same role at Roma a month ago, amid uproar from their supporters over her decision to sack manager Daniele De Rossi, who is a legendary figure at the club. She was even put under police protection, such was the level of unrest from the Giallorossi fanbase.

AS Roma fans protest Daniele De Rossi sacking.

Everton supporters will rightly be intrigued by this update for many years, not least because it shows that The Friedkin Group are willing to make “surprise moves”, as the report alludes to. It appears as though Souloukou was only fired due to the De Rossi situation and because the fans wanted her gone, rather than her performing badly at her job.

For that reason, she could represent a positive option to come in and be one of the most high-profile figures at Everton, helping ensure that the day-to-day running of the club is far more seamless than has proven to be the case for much of Moshiri’s reign.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 18, 2024

Souloukou is 15 years of experience in football, so she would be coming in as a figure who knows the game inside out, and the fact that Friedkin already knows her and her strengths so well can only be a good thing, even if she has been the subject of a sacking recently.

Sold by Ashley: Newcastle star has seen his value soar 566% after leaving

Newcastle United have shaped into an excellently run club, and though there’s been some frustration around the rather uninspiring summer transfer window, it’s a world away from the one-time pit the Magpies were bogged in, under the iron fist of Mike Ashley.

Eddie Howe has led the Toon to a Champions League campaign and a domestic cup final, having improved St. James’ Park with players such as Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman.

Heightened expectations accentuate issues that seek to pull the side away from prominence, and the PSR issues that seeped across from exceeded spending over a three-year limit led to some damaging departures.

Newcastle sold some top talents this summer

Newcastle did not welcome any high-priced additions this summer, notably failing to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace despite offering a fourth bid worth £65m for the England international.

Marc Guehi

The Tynesiders did, however, manage to keep a hold of Gordon, Guimaraes and Isak, all of whom were courted by elite-level outfits. Why? Because some younger, more marginal talent was trimmed.

Yankuba Minteh was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of £30m in July, turning a healthy profit but failing to complete an appearance for United, plying his trade under Arne Slot with Feyenoord last year.

More painfully, the Newcastle faithful had to say goodbye to one of their own, Elliot Anderson, for the 21-year-old midfielder joined divisional rivals Nottingham Forest in a £35m move and has since been likened to none other than Lionel Messi by Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith during the Tricky Trees’ victory over Palace on Monday evening.

These are costly sales, but good deals in the grand scheme: Newcastle’s biggest hitters remain on the books. There’s a young talent, sold not too long ago, whose departure actually predates that of Howe and PIF’s advent, and he might prove to be the biggest fumble of the lot.

Newcastle already sold their biggest talent

A little over three years ago, Newcastle sold Bobby Clark to Liverpool in a deal worth £1.5m. He was 16 years old, a talented winger with properties that called for a career in the centre of the park.

Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

Described as “Newcastle’s most promising youngster” by the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, a lack of ambition from Newcastle, under the rule of Ashley, proved to be one of the defining points in Clark’s decision to jump ship at that nascent stage of his career, with Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur also interested.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Ryder had even drawn parallels between the youngster and the one and only Paul Gascoigne, saying: “You have always go to be very careful with comparisons but for me – and I don’t talk about this lightly – but at the same sort of age, you had a young Paul Gascoigne at Newcastle.”

After completing 14 senior appearances for Liverpool and a bagful more at youth level, the 19-year-old completed a £10m transfer to Austrian behemoths RB Salzburg, aggravating Newcastle’s blunder, of losing him for so little.

Salzburg, led by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders, have flattered to deceive so far this season and have lost their opening Champions League fixtures by an aggregate scoreline of 7-0, but Clark’s efforts have showcased his quality.

Still a teenager, he’s proving that he has what it takes on Europe’s biggest stage, having made a marked impact on Liverpool’s season amid an injury crisis in 2023/24, crucial in winning the Carabao Cup.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

Given that he’s already seen a 566% rise in value – when referring to his £10m fee – and has so much scope for growth over the coming years, it must be frustrating to think that such a player was allowed to leave, not convinced of the club’s vision.

Of course, Newcastle’s vision was myopic at that stage. He left before the lucrative PIF takeover rewrote the Toon’s future, and perhaps would be plying his trade under Howe’s leadership, had he only stayed on for another year and seen the loping strides taken.

Alas, it can’t be changed now. Though the words of those such as journalist Charlie Bennett, who called it one of Ashley’s “costliest blunders in recent times”, ring painfully true to this day, with the short-term rush from a £1.5m payday negated now, looking at the figure that could have been collected.

There’s a good chance that Clark would have stayed on the books anyway. Liverpool let him go, sure, but did so with the insertion of an affordable buyback clause, having recognised the calibre of prospect that they had grudgingly let go, with Slot aware that he would simply be scrapping for one minute, two, amid the high-class quality of the first team.

He’s got flair and panache, a boyish avidity that, if sustained, hardened, could be utilised as an almighty weapon in a dynamic and all-encompassing midfield role.

A lad for the big occasion, he proved his European credentials last season, with Liverpool, and consolidated them now, with Salzburg. Last year, across two Europa League fixtures, he scored, won 82% of his duels, completed 90% of his passes and won six tackles, as per Sofascore.

Liverpool player Bobby Clark warming up.

With the likes of Lewis Miley proving his talent in Newcastle’s senior set-up and Anderson now blooming out in Nottingham, there’s a pleasing amount of academy talent starting to emerge from the youth ranks on Tyneside.

It’s just a shame that Clark’s still not there, a core part of that revolution.

Newcastle must regret deal for £15m flop who's now worth millions less
