Slot must instantly sell forgotten Liverpool man who earns more than Diaz

Liverpool are entering the unknown but there is a sense of assuredness with Michael Edwards' guidance seeing Arne Slot cherry-picked from a host of contenders to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk have both suggested that they will be on Merseyside next season and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, who, alongside his senior peers, is out of contract in one year, is yet to enter discussions with the club.

Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp embrace

Edwards, sporting director Richard Hughes and Slot all have pressing areas of concern in this regard, with fresh faces needed too. While it might not hold the same kind of weight, Luis Diaz is also attracting attention from overseas and the path forward will need to be established quickly.

Luis Diaz's future at Liverpool

Diaz has been an integral part of Liverpool's resurgence, featuring 51 times in all competitions in 2023/24 and starting 32 matches in the Premier League.

Hailed for his "relentless" approach and "attack-dog mentality" by journalist Sam Dean, Diaz is one of the most bold and breezy wingers in English football, though his profligacy in front of goal has split opinions on his suitability on the left wing for the long run.

Aged 27, the Colombia star has attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona in recent months and Liverpool have placed a £75m price tag on his name – with three years left on his current deal, this might be the perfect time to cash in.

Especially given that Diaz may wish for improved terms to better reflect his prominent position in the Liverpool squad, only earning £55k-per-week at present, according to Capology.

Of course, this is hardly a poor living but when comparing such earnings with certain other players on Liverpool's books, it's understandable that Diaz might wish for more.

Luis Diaz warming up for Liverpool.

Nat Phillips, for example, is on quite the salary despite his rarely-seen presence on Merseyside, and he must surely be ditched this summer.

Why Nat Phillips must be sold

Phillips holds the status of cult hero at Anfield for his crucial role in combatting the staggering defensive injuries of 2020/21, completing 17 league appearances and scoring against Burnley as Klopp's side crafted a ten-match unbeaten run to salvage a third-place finish against the odds.

Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

His manager praised his performances as "absolutely insane", and indeed Phillips defied the odds after spending the early phase of his Liverpool career on the fringe, keeping seven clean sheets and averaging 4.8 clearances and 7.5 won duels per game, as per Sofascore.

The 6 foot 3 titan never earned a proper run of opportunity after that period, loaned out to Bournemouth in the Championship the following campaign and then to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic one year later – though he was criticised for his "really bad" displays by one Hoops podcaster, recalled in January and shipped out once more to Cardiff City in England's second tier.

Admittedly, the 27-year-old has caught the eye with Cardiff, crisp in the tackle and industriously carrying out his duties, but he's surely in need of a permanent home at this stage of his career – and that simply won't be at Liverpool.

Given that Phillips only made two starts for Liverpool last season, it's indeed clear that he has no future at the club and must be sold with haste, with his £65k-per-week salary surpassing that of Diaz, who might have his flaws but is unquestionably one of the most wingers in the Premier League and has been a key part of Klopp's team's success this season.

Cardiff head coach Erol Bulut said in April: "He'd like to stay, he loves to be here with us, with Cardiff. Let's see from him what will be for him for the new season."

Phillips has two more years on his Liverpool deal but if he stays it would see him reach his 29th year having never really found his feet. For everyone's sake, he must be sold. Indeed, it would trim the wage bill quite considerably.

£200k-a-week Man Utd ace who Gary Neville called "embarrassing" up for sale

Manchester United could part ways with yet another one of their stars this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to complete a massive overhaul of the club ahead of the new season.

Manchester United's European future unclear

A vital 3-2 win over Newcastle United has boosted Manchester United's hopes of finishing in a European football spot via the Premier League, with a place in next season's UEFA Conference League confirmed if they better the Magpies' result on the final day of the season.

Goals from young trio Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund ensured that Erik ten Hag's side picked up all three points against the Tyneside outfit, despite a late goal from Lewis Hall making the final moments perhaps more difficult than they could have been, and it also made sure that their European hopes remained.

Facing a potentially tricky trip to Brighton, they will be boosted by the fact that Newcastle also face an away game, against Thomas Frank's Brentford. The Red Devils need Newcastle to drop points to have any hope of leapfrogging them, with their -3 goal difference meaning that a win for both sides would retain the status quo.

There is also the chance that Manchester United are playing Europa League football next season, and leaving Newcastle without any European football, but that would require the Red Devils to lift the FA Cup in 9 days time, where they face Manchester City at Wembley.

No matter the outcome, there is likely to be major change this summer, and it has already been confirmed that Raphael Varane will leave the club as a free agent, with Anthony Martial almost certain to follow him out of the exit door. Now, another high-earner could be leaving.

Question marks over forward's future

That comes in the form of Antony, whose time at Manchester United has been nothing short of a disaster. The Brazilian, signed at the request of Ten Hag when he took over, arrived for £86m but has done nothing to justify that transfer fee. This season, he has picked up more yellow cards (6) than goals and assists combined (5) across all competitions, and has managed just a single goal and assist in the Premier League.

His £200,000 a week wages make him the seventh highest-paid player at the club (a table he will climb when Varane and Martial depart), and TalkSPORT claim that this hefty take-home could see him become a casualty of the new regime because United are "having to trim their wage bill for their planned rebuild".

The criticism of the Brazilian has been widespread across his stint at Manchester United, led by former United star Gary Neville, who dubbed him "absolutely ridiculous" and "embarrassing" during one Manchester derby after a swipe at Jeremy Doku.

The recent emergence of Diallo has only served to underline the disappointment that Antony has been at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils have now decided to cut their losses on the 24-year-old, it is reported.

Of course, this would involve finding a buyer for the Brazilian, while United would have to accept a massive loss on the initial transfer fee and Antony may also have to take a hefty wage cut, something that he may be reluctant to do given his contract at Old Trafford runs until 2027.

Derby dropped a clanger signing star who’d be worth £11m in 2024 money

Derby County have been blessed with some potent goalscorers up top this season in their time of need, with James Collins bagging 13 league goals as the main source of goals in attack.

Free agent signing Dwight Gayle had also helped himself to three goals from six League One games, before injury disaster struck.

Paul Warne will hope Collins, who is back in the first-team fold after injury issues of his own, and the rest of his Derby teammates can get over the line as the Rams try and seal automatic promotion in the matches to come to return to the Championship.

The East Midlands outfit will stray on the side of caution splashing the cash if they do jump back up to the second tier, knowing that they could be suspectible to falling victim to another transfer blunder like this one back in 2007.

Robert Earnshaw's time at Derby

A lot was expected of Robert Earnshaw on his arrival to Pride Park, having netted 17 times from just 50 appearances for West Bromwich Albion before moving to Derbyshire.

Bagging an impressive 27 goals from just 47 Norwich City appearances too before joining the Baggies, it must have been a foregone conclusion in Derby's head that the prolific Welsh attacker would become an instant Rams hero.

Robert Earnshaw West Brom

The reality would be far more bleak unfortunately, with the £4.6m statement signing – as per TotallyFootball's Transfer Index – going on to score just two times for the Rams before departing for arch-rivals Nottingham Forest.

To add further insult to injury, Earnshaw would go on to be a star for Derby's main nemesis and come back to haunt his former employers with many a goal in matches that followed between the bitter neighbours.

When looking over this disastrous deal in the here and now, taking into account inflation courtesy of TotallyMoney's Transfer Index, the transfer mishap is exposed as being even more of a costly misfire.

Robert Earnshaw's transfer value in 2024

If the same ill-fated switch was to happen today, the Welshman would demand a far more substantial £11.9m fee to win his services – as per Totally Money.

Looking at Derby's record arrivals, that would see the Rams dud surge to the very top of the list – beating Matej Vydra to the golden medal spot in the process, who is far more well-liked by those in Derbyshire to this day for notching up 27 goals from 80 appearances.

1. Matej Vydra

€9.4m (£8m)

2. Krystian Bielik

€8.2m (£7m)

3. Bradley Johnson

€8.1m (£6.9m)

4. Tom Ince

€6.7m (£5.7m)

5. Martyn Waghorn

€5.6m (£4.8m)

Earnshaw flopping at Pride Park likely wasn't helped by Derby finishing rock bottom of the Premier League during his only season there in truth, rooted to the foot of the table with a still record low points haul of 11.

Describing his Rams ordeal as a "difficult" time in his career during a tell-all interview with DerbyshireLive journalist Chris Watson in 2018, the now-retired striker will take some solace in the fact he managed to bounce back with Forest even if that makes the failure from a Rams perspective even harder to stomach.

No doubt, Derby failing to win promotion up to the Championship this campaign would be even more sickening with Warne keeping his fingers crossed that Collins and Co can continue firing on all cylinders.

The Derby dud who now plays in a league 14 places below English football

Derby County supporters will have forgotten about this dire flop’s existence.

However, despite winning all three of their pre-season games in the US, manager Arne Slot was not completely happy with his team's performances as he pointed out the areas where his players need to improve ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.

  • WHAT ARNE SLOT SAID

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the United clash, the Dutch coach was asked if he was satisfied with the team's performance to which he replied, "Yes, I was – but not with all of them. We are very happy with the result, we scored some really nice goals. But I don't think we had enough control over the game because United were threatening us more than a few times. It's a 3-0 win but the score could have been different tonight as well."

When asked about his overall impression of the US tour, Slot added, "Very positive, I think. Of course the results, that's where everybody is looking at. But players stayed fit and they are able to perform in the way we want, so [a] high-intensity game.

"We saw some great goals during this tour, some great build-up situations and I see them working really, really hard not to concede. Like I said, today I think we gave away too many chances, United deserved more than a 3-0 loss. But it's also our quality that we do score our own chances."

Pacers rip UAE apart to give Netherlands T20 World Cup spot

UAE recover from 9 for 5 but fail to stop the Dutch from making their third consecutive T20 World Cup

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Dubai29-Oct-2019

Paul van Meekeren erupts after claiming another big wicket•Peter Della Penna

A relentless assault from the pace quartet of Fred Klaassen, Paul van Meekeren, Brandon Glover and Timm van der Gugten smothered the tournament hosts as the Netherlands restricted UAE to 80 for 9 on the way to an eight-wicket win in the opening playoff match at the men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers at Dubai International Stadium. It’s the Netherlands’ third consecutive berth in the men’s T20 World Cup following trips to Bangladesh in 2014 and India in 2016.UAE were 9 for 5 after five overs after choosing to bat first and, unlike Papua New Guinea against Kenya two days earlier, were never able to recover.Coming back into the starting XI as an extra bowling option in place of struggling opening batsman Tobias Visee, Klaassen struck five balls into the match when he beat Rohan Mustafa for pace as the batsman attempted to pull a length ball that fluttered over the bowler’s head for a return catch taken next to the non-striker’s stumps. That made it 2 for 1, but a pair of hammer blows were struck at the end of the second over by van Meekeren, which pretty much wiped out UAE’s chances. Sticking to a back-of-a-length mode of attack, van Meekeren had Rameez Shahzad fending an edge behind for a third-ball duck, and then Muhammad Usman, fresh off a sensational 89 not out against Canada, lasted just one ball. The bowler squared him up with one on a similar length angled across the fourth-stump channel to give Scott Edwards another catch behind as UAE were left reeling at 3 for 3.Brandon Glover came on in the third over and trapped Darius D’Silva with a full-length ball playing around his pads for the third UAE duck before Zawar Farid miscued a pull to Pieter Seelaar on the ring at midwicket in the fifth for Glover’s second.Waheed Ahmed and Mohammad Boota mostly nudged the ball around for the next eight overs in a 35-run stand, the first boundary coming from a top-edge over the keeper by Waheed off van Meekeren in the sixth. But Glover returned in the 14th to bounce out both. Waheed hooked to van Meekeren at deep fine-leg before Boota feathered an edge through to Edwards off a pull to make it 45 for 7.After a brief flurry of sixes off Klaassen in the 19th by Sultan Ahmed and Ahmed Raza, van der Gugten stifled any further hopes with two wickets in the final over. Sultan slogged to cow corner before Raza was bowled way out in front of a slower ball in what ended as a one-run over.UAE struck an early blow in the chase when Max O’Dowd waved through a gentle offbreak from Mustafa to be bowled for 5. But Colin Ackermann and Ben Cooper rebounded with a 51-run stand to put the Dutch on course for a smooth chase. The only further hiccup came in the tenth over when Ackermann slashed Zahoor Khan to third man for 18. Cooper and Ryan ten Doeschate knocked off the final 25 runs with ease, clinching victory with 29 balls to spare.

Rahkeem Cornwall magic gives St Lucia Zouks first win

The allrounder smashed the season’s second-fastest half-century in a century stand with Fletcher to set up big win

The Report by Shashank Kishore13-Sep-2019

Chris Gayle and Andre Russell in the opposition, the local side, Jamaica Tallawahs. What were the chances of St Lucia Zouks making a match of this one? As it turned out, Sabina Park had to rise and celebrate Rahkeem Cornwall, who biffed the season’s second-fastest half-century, off 19 balls, and then converted that to a 30-ball 75, as Zouks recorded their first win of the season on Thursday night after a brief wobble.Gayle zero, Phillips fiftyLeft-arm seamer Obed McCoy struggled with no-ball issues, but managed to strike gold early when he had Gayle fending a lifter to the wicketkeeper off the fourth ball of the match to set the tone. But the Zouks were under fire as Glenn Phillips, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman, and Rovman Powell set the stage on fire with some exhilarating hitting.Phillips likes to stay leg side and get beside the line, not behind. His stance resembles that of a baseball slogger, the bat moving behind his back in little arcs as he meets the ball with tremendous bat speed. His batting can at times border on the unorthodox, but when they come off, it looks mighty impressive. Like it did on Thursday. His 34-ball 58, courtesy eight fours and a six, and a third-wicket stand of 87 with Powell that took just 43 balls set Tallawahs up for a big total.CPL via Getty Images

The Russell blow that tilted the scalesAt the halfway mark, Tallawahs were superbly placed at 108 for 2. Zouks looked out of depth until the quick wickets of Powell and Phillips got them back into the game. Credit for that should go to Australian legspinner Fawad Ahmed, who cleverly varied his lengths and used his gentle drift to build pressure with dot balls that led to both of them falling to big strokes. It also helped that the catching was top notch. Powell was out to a screamer when Colin de Grandhomme stuck his right hand upwards to get his hands on the ball at long-off and then lobbed it up as momentum took him beyond the ropes. Then he regained composure to nonchalantly come back into the field of play to complete the catch. When they made 242 two nights ago against Patriots, Tallawahs raised their hundred in just 12 overs. Here, they got there in the tenth over. The stage was set for the Russell show, but it looked like Zouks had a plan, and that was to target him with short balls at the body, a tactic many IPL sides have tried with a fair degree of success. Hardus Viljoen bowled a heavy ball – back of length and into the body – as Russell looked to hook. In doing so, he took his eyes off and was hit just below the right ear. A dazed Russell took a while to stand up and was stretchered off the field to hospital for scans, which later cleared him of serious injury. That robbed the Tallawahs of momentum, and George Worker and Shamar Springer only managed a run-a-ball 33. They only managed 38 off the last six overs to give the Zouks the momentum at the halfway mark.Tallawahs’ fielding shockerThe hosts didn’t cover themselves in glory on the field. In the space of three deliveries, they dropped Cornwall and Andre Fletcher. First, Springer dropped a steepler running back from square leg to reprieve Cornwall on 18 after he mishit a Jerome Taylor slower delivery. Two balls later, in the fourth over, Oshane Thomas made a royal mess of a straightforward catch at third man with Fletcher on 15. In the next over, Chadwick Walton dropped a sitter at backward point to reprieve Cornwall for a second time, and then watched Fletcher club ten off his next two deliveries in the over as the strike turned. By then, Zouks had raced to 64 in five overs.Cornwall’s game isn’t conventional by any means. But it also isn’t true that his game is only about wild slogging. Amid the occasional backing away to smash the ball, there’s plenty of cricket sense and an air of disdain about his batting. The leg-side boundary was his favoured area as he cleared the ropes quite comfortably playing the pull shot. Up early against late swing, he struggled a touch, but Taylor erred in length by trying to bowl into his body, only to see Cornwall back away and flick or pull. Against Worker’s left-arm spin, Cornwall used his reach to hit straight and clear the ground, a sequence of 6,6,1 getting him to his third CPL fifty. At the other end, Fletcher was in the mood for destruction. The flicks for six over deep square off Taylor having an air of disdain – looking straight on, head down and simply allowing his hand-eye coordination to twirl his wrists and pick the ball for six. He started like a bullet train, but quickly slipped into the role of second fiddle as Cornwall unleashed himself in the 111-run opening stand off just 8.4 overs.Zouks collapse but Fletcher sees them homeThomas returned after his shocker in the field to pick up three quick wickets after a blazing start – Zouks slipped from 146 for 2 to 157 for 5, but the early damage that skyrocketed their run rate meant there was little trouble in getting home despite the wobble. Fletcher remained unbeaten on 47 when Thisara Perera muscled a six and four in his five-ball 11 to hit the winning runs and give them their first win.

Boehly and Eghbali hold internal talks as Chelsea weigh Pochettino decision

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have apparently held internal discussions as a Mauricio Pochettino update surfaces involving the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

Pochettino apologises after 4-2 defeat to Wolves

The Blues' 4-2 defeat to Wolves at home last weekend left a bitter taste in the mouths of supporters, with Pochettino's side being subject to boos at both half-time and full-time whistles.

The loss is Chelsea's second bad defeat on the trot and now relegates them to the bottom half of the Premier League table. Every single side above them have conceded fewer goals than Pochettino's side, and their lack of a potent goalscorer is evident by the fact that only West Ham, Wolves and Man United have scored less than them out of the division's top teams.

This comes after Boehly and the board sought to back Pochettino by spending nearly £400 million last summer, and as pressure mounts on the Argentine, there have been reports that Chelsea have been looking at replacements for their manager. Pochettino, speaking after his side's 4-2 loss to Wolves, issued a public apology to fans for Chelsea's abject display.

"I am so disappointed, we need to change this feeling, and I apologise to the fans. I say thank you to the fans who kept going to the end helping the team and supporting the team," said Pochettino to club media.

"The main problem was that we felt the pressure and the stress to win, to play well, to perform. We didn’t have time when Palmer scored to build our momentum in the game and to dominate and play easy and feel confident.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

"At the moment we are not matching the history of the club and we need to accept that. We need to be critical but we cannot give up. Of course we are going to keep working really hard to try to change the results. If it is not working in this way maybe we need to move on and try to find different solutions.

"What we can say is we apologise to the fans. The most important thing we can do now is to feel the responsibility. To understand the fans is really important and we want to apologise and say sorry."

Pochettino also admitted his job is not safe after this humbling loss to Wolves, with journalist Graeme Bailey and HITC now sharing an update.

Boehly and Eghbali hold internal talks as Chelsea weigh Pochettino action

According to their information, both Eghbali and Boehly have discussed the club's current fortunes, with Chelsea's hierarchy considering action may have to be taken in regards to Pochettino this season.

However, this would be reserved for the summer, and it is not currently believed that the former Spurs boss is in danger of the axe before their Carabao Cup final with Liverpool. Eghbali in particular is pushing for improvement, though, so pressure remains on Pochettino to steer the Chelsea ship back on course.

Harry Kane reveals how back injury has done him a 'favour' after scoring for England on return to action ahead of Euro 2024

England captain Harry Kane is hopeful a recent back injury has worked in his favour ahead of Euro 2024, scoring on his first appearance in a month.

  • Kane returns from back injury
  • Scores England's third goal against Bosnia
  • Optimistic about his fitness
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane scored England's third goal of Monday night's 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina off the bench, the first of two Euro 2024 warm-up friendlies, having replaced Ollie Watkins for the final 28 minutes plus stoppage time at St James' Park.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was Kane's first opportunity to get on the pitch since Bayern Munich's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg on May 8. A back injury forced him to miss the final two games of the Bundesliga season, but he's confident that a few weeks off playing actually came at the right time.

  • WHAT KANE SAID

"I'm feeling good," Kane told "A lot of the end of season was precaution. It was a good chance to get a good break at the end of the season. I feel fine. I'm sure I'll get some minutes on Friday [against Iceland]. It's always worked in my favour, it's about getting minutes. I'm not someone who takes too long to get sharp."

Jude Bellingham is yet to report for duty after the Champions League final, while Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Harry Maguire and John Stones are all working on their fitness. Declan Rice remained unused against Bosnia, and Phil Foden wasn't on the bench.
