Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Oneil Cruz stole the show during the first round of the 2025 Home Run Derby on Monday night.

Cruz crushed 21 homers during his first round performance in the Derby, but one home run stood out amongst the others. He smashed a 513-foot homer straight out of Truist Park in Atlanta. It was the furthest hit home run of the night (thus far), and it happened to be the longest home run ever hit at Truist Park. The previous record was 495 feet, via MLB.

So, where does Cruz's blast compare in Home Run Derby history since 2016? His 513-foot homer ties for the fourth furthest hit in Derby history in that span. He ties homers hit by Shohei Ohtani in 2021 and by Aaron Judge in 2017—pretty good company to join in that spot.

The furthest home run hit at the Derby in the Statcast era was by Juan Soto in 2021 when he crushed one 520 feet. The next two longest homers also occurred in '21—a 518-foot blast hit by Trevor Story followed by a 514-foot home run hit by Pete Alonso.

We'll see how Cruz does during the rest of the Home Run Derby on Monday. Maybe he'll become the first Pirates player to win the title.

Pete Crow-Armstrong has a knack for hitting home runs on pitches out of the zone. In fact, he leads MLB in the quirky statistic.

Well, if hitting out of the zone homers is an art form for Crow-Armstrong, then he created his magnum opus during the Chicago Cubs' 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Facing Pirates southpaw Andrew Heaney with one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Crow-Armstrong worked the count even, then got a four-seam fastball up in the zone—and I mean way up—on the fifth pitch of the at-bat.

The Cubs budding star turned on the ball, crushing it 393 feet to right field at a blistering 103.9 MPH.

Not only did the home run give the Cubs the lead, but it was also absurd, given the location of the pitch Crow-Armstrong hit. Here's a closer look.

The offering was nearly four feet above the plate. Crow-Armstrong's manager Craig Counsell was just as surprised as all of us that the Cubs star managed to hit the ball out.

Crow-Armstrong is in the midst of a breakout campaign in his second full big-league season. He owns a .271/.305/.554 slash line with 18 home runs, 57 RBI, 51 runs scored and 21 stolen bases. Crow-Armstrong, currently on pace for at least 40 homers and 50 stolen bases, is a safe bet to be a National League All-Star for the first time in his career.

Alick Athanaze credited West Indies’ bowlers for rescuing the team after another night of unforced errors in Chattogram with the bat and in the field, as they sealed their first T20I series win in 14 months.The opener’s fifty and 105-run stand with Shai Hope set up a strong platform, but West Indies collapsed from 106 for 1, losing 8 for 43 and leaving Bangladesh chasing a modest total. Four dropped catches made matters worse, yet the bowlers bailed West Indies out. The 150 that Bangladesh fell short of was lowest target they had ever failed to chase in Chattogram. Athanaze said West Indies’ bowlers controlled the scoring in the powerplay, which helped them build run-rate pressure on Bangladesh.”Our bowlers showed their class again,” Athanaze said. “We bowled very well. They showed why we are one of the best T20 sides in the world.”I felt the pitch got better. The dew has a lot of effect on the pitch. We took the total in our stride. We wanted to make a good start with the ball. We weren’t the best in the field, but the bowlers showed their class. They picked up wickets and restricted them.Related

“Once you control the powerplay, it gets difficult (to score) when the field is spread. We tried our best to utilise our bowlers. We know they are not big power-hitters down the ground, so we tried our best to plan for them.”Tanzid Hasan, who also scored a fifty, felt Bangladesh should have chased down their target. He said the batters would themselves have to find a way out of the run-scoring struggle that they’ve now endured for a considerable length of time.”I thought regardless of the wicket, we should have chased 150,” Tanzid said. “It was the batters’ failure. Many of Bangladesh’s batters in this game looked to be caught in two minds. Jaker Ali’s return to the side was riddled with questions given his form. He made 17 off 18 balls at a stage when the asking run-rate was rapidly rising. Tanzid said he tried to remind Jaker about his Player-of-the-Match performance in the third T20I in Kingstown last year.”Jaker helped us win in the West Indies,” Tanzid said. “I told him that he had won us a game against West Indies, so he can do it again. I told him that if we stuck together as a pair, we could have won the game. I think I had the bigger responsibility, but I couldn’t perform up to expectations.”We have a world-class bowling department. They usually restrict the opposition on any wicket. The batters must follow how the bowlers have helped the team and taken the team forward. Responsibility is for everyone in the team. We have to do well as a batting unit.”Athanaze also praised the Bangladesh bowling attack and fielding.”You have to give credit to the Bangladeshi bowlers,” he said. “A lot of emphasis is on us not batting well but I felt they bowled really well. They spun the ball and bowled slower. In his first and second spells, Rishad Hossain understood how to bowl on this wicket. It also gave us the indication how to bowl as well. They bowled very well in the back end. They caught very well too.”The final T20I of the series is in Chattogram on Friday.

Pakistan captain Salman Agha has criticised India for what he called their “disappointing” behaviour during the Asia Cup.”What India have done this tournament is very disappointing,” Agha said at the press conference after the final. “They’re not disrespecting us by not shaking hands, they’re disrespecting cricket. Good teams don’t do what they did today [refusing to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi]. We went to pose with the trophy on our own because we wanted to fulfil our obligations. We stood there and took our medals. It was the culmination of a series of incidents where India have looked to limit any contact with Pakistan players or officials during the tournament.Agha said he did not have an issue with India captain Suryakumar Yadav. He claimed that if it had been up to Suryakumar, he would have shaken hands with Agha before the tosses at the three matches the teams have played against each other.”He shook hands with me in private at the start of the tournament,” Agha said. “Both at the pre-tournament press conference and when we met in the referee’s meeting. But when they’re out in the world in front of the cameras, they don’t shake our hands. Reiterating his position before the final, Agha said he did not believe there was a precedent in cricket for a team refusing handshakes, saying it was “detrimental” to the spirit of cricket. The manner in which the post-final presentation unfolded, with India holding up an imaginary trophy, was “a consequence of everything they had done before”.”This is the first time I’ve ever seen this happen,” Agha said. “Whatever happened in this tournament was very bad, and I hope it stops at some stage because it’s bad for cricket. Everything that happened today was a consequence of all that happened [before]. Of course, the ACC president will give the trophy to the winners – if you won’t take the trophy from him, how will you get it?”As with the previous two India-Pakistan matches in this tournament, there were no handshakes at the toss at the final or following the game, and the teams stood apart in their huddles while waiting for the presentation ceremony to begin. Agha said all that had taken place had not set a good example to those following the game in either India or Pakistan, but placed the blame squarely on the opposition.”I’m not just a Pakistan captain, I’m a cricket fan,” Agha said. “If a kid is watching in India or Pakistan, we’re not sending them a good message. People think of us as role models, but if we’re behaving like this, we’re not inspiring them. What happened shouldn’t have happened, but you should ask the people [India] responsible for this rather than me.”

Liverpool join Ian Subiabre race

As reported by The Boot Room’s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Ian Subiabre alongside Arsenal, Manchester City and a number of other Premier League rivals.

The youngster is one of the most promising stars that South American football has to offer, and is reportedly ready to move on from River Plate in 2026.

Described as a “direct dribbler” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Subiabre would be an excellent coup for Liverpool, especially in January if a winter move does indeed become possible.

Whether it’s been those at Anfield in the case of Alexis Mac Allister or Chelsea with Moises Caicedo, a number of top Premier League sides have missed out on bargain deals for South American stars before paying a premium price to the likes of Brighton to secure those same players.

The Reds could now skip that step by landing a repeat of Man City’s Claudio Echeverri deal for Subiabre next year.

While Subiabre’s deal is due to expire at the end of 2026, reports from his homeland suggest the 18-year-old is actually ready to renew his deal until 2028 — giving River Plate the chance to recuperate a larger fee for him.

This proposed fresh contract, if officially announced, would include a whopping £74 million release clause.

Liverpool will be praying this isn’t the case, and Subiabre pulls a ‘Trent’ by running his current deal down.

If not, Slot’s side would have to fork out much more money for the Argentine, albeit maybe not as high as the clause.

ويُعد أوديناكا أوكورو، ظهير نادي سبورتنج لاجوس النيجيري، أحد أبرز الأسماء المطروحة أمام الأهلي، خصوصًا بعد تألقه مع منتخب بلاده للشباب في كأس العالم تحت 20 عامًا التي أقيمت في تشيلي، حيث شارك في أربع مباريات أساسيًا.

وفي تصريح خاص لـ بطولات، كشف جودين إيناخينا، رئيس نادي لاجوس النيجيري، عن تفاصيل اهتمام الأهلي باللاعب، قائلًا: “علمت من المدير الرياضي للنادي أن الأهلي مهتمًا بلاعبنا وظهيرنا الأيسر، أوديناكا أوكورو، منذ شهر مايو الماضي”.

وأضاف: “لكن ما علمته أيضًا أن الأهلي لم يتقدم بعرض رسمي، ولدينا استعداد لمناقشة الأمر إذا حدث ذلك، وكان عرضه أفضل مما جاء لنا من خارج إفريقيا”.

وأكد رئيس لاجوس في ختام حديثه: “نادينا منفتح على التفاوض مع الأهلي إذا أبدى جدية، لأن هناك رغبة في تطوير اللاعبين ومنحهم الفرصة للاحتراف في أندية كبرى”.

Chelsea wanted to sign a new centre-back in the summer transfer window and were actively exploring options, following Levi Colwill’s disastrous ACL injury which is expected to keep him out for a large portion of 2025/2026.

Enzo Maresca even publicly asked the club to bring in a new central defender, and they were actively pursuing a deal for Dean Huijsen before the Spaniard ultimately opted for Real Madrid.

While the Italian later backtracked on this message, claiming an internal solution was the only option, it is crystal clear from Maresca’s statement there that he’s not happy with Chelsea’s current defensive options.

Colwill’s injury has left them light in that area, with Wesley Fofana also having struggled for consistent fitness since his £70 million move from Leicester City three years ago.

Axel Disasi is part of the Chelsea ‘bomb squad’ with Raheem Sterling, and while Benoit Badiashile has returned to first-team training this week, it is unclear how ready he is to feature for Maresca.

Summer signing Jorrel Hato can play centre-back but is primarily viewed as a left-back and alternative to Marc Cucurella, leaving little wonder why Maresca was so keen on another option to bolster the heart of his defence.

With the UK window closing on September 1, this could still be on the agenda for 2026, with journalist Graeme Bailey reporting that they’re big fans of Club Brugge starlet Joel Ordonez.

Chelsea send officials on midweek mission with Joel Ordonez set to leave Brugge

Speaking to TBR Football, Bailey states that Chelsea scouts were sent to run the rule over Ordonez during Ecuador’s 1-0 win over Argentina on Wednesday.

Enner Valencia scored the only game of the game as both Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Otamendi were sent off during a tense affair, but Ordonez managed to help Ecuador keep a clean sheet against the world champions.

The 21-year-old, according to reports, is valued at around £40 million by Brugge, and Bailey says that Ordonez is “almost certain” to leave in 2026 amid interest from Chelsea.

Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in the “huge talent”, with his mooted summer move to Marseille falling through. It could only be a matter of time before he’s plying his trade in the Premier League, and Ordonez ticks nearly every box.

وأضاف:” الدنيا (بهدلة) والله لو كان هذا الاستثمار موجودًا في فترة محمد صلاح ومحمد النني مع المقاولون العرب، لما وصل الثنائي إلى ما وصل إليه في عالم كرة القدم (ولا لعبوا كورة)”.

وأضاف: “الكابتن حلمي طولان وعلي أبو جريشة وعبد الظاهر السقا، ومحمد عمر، جميعهم قامات كبيرة في كرة القدم المصرية، لكن السؤال توليت منصب في اللجنة الفنية لاتحاد الكرة لماذا تطمع في قيادة منتخب مصر المشارك في بطولة كأس العرب؟”.

واستكمل: “هناك العديد من المدربين الأكفاء مثل تامر مصطفى وعلي ماهر ومؤمن سليمان وخالد جلال، لماذا لم يتم منحهم الفرصة؟ وماذا سيحدث إذا فشل المنتخب خلال البطولة؟ من سيتحمل المسؤولية وقتها؟ هل سيحاسب أعضاء اللجنة أنفسهم؟”.

وتابع: “في الظروف الطبيعية، لو لم يكن حلمي طولان ضمن اللجنة الفنية، لكنت أول من يرشحه لتولي قيادة المنتخب الأول، وليس المنتخب الثاني، لكن طالما تولى منصبًا داخل اللجنة، فمن الأفضل أن يبتعد عن تدريب أي منتخب، حتى وإن تعرض لضغوط، ولا مجال لتبرير ذلك بعبارات مثل أنا لا أتقاضى أموالًا”.

واستطرد: “لقد تم تشكيل جهاز فني دخل في خلافات مع المدير الفني للمنتخب الأول قبل انطلاق كأس العالم بأيام قليلة، وكأن الأمر طبيعي، هل رأينا يومًا وليد الركراكي يخرج لتحليل المباريات أو تقديم البرامج أثناء توليه مهامًا فنية؟ لدينا مشاكل كبيرة”.

واسترسل: “أصبح اللاعب المعتزل صحفيًا ومقدم برامج ومحللًا ورئيس مجلس إدارة وعضو اتحاد كرة، بل ومشرفًا على المنتخبات وحتى الحكام أصبح بعضهم إداريين وإعلاميين وتلك موضة جديدة، (خليك في تخصصك)”.

وأتم: “لكل مهنة أصحابها، نحن نعيش حالة من الخلط والفهلوة، من الطبيعي أن يعمل الصحفي في الإعلام ويقدم البرامج والبودكاست، فهذا مجاله، لكن أن يتولى مسؤوليات فنية أو يدير قطاعات كرة القدم، فهذا غير مقبول على الإطلاق”.
