Rangers could move for manager "similar to Postecoglou" to replace Martin

Russell Martin’s tenure at Glasgow Rangers looks like it could be a short one, as there are already rumblings about him being removed from the role.

Earlier in the month, The I Paper’s chief football correspondent, Daniel Storey, wrote about how the 49ers Enterprises were at Ibrox and saw “the poor fare, they heard the boos, and they will not have missed the banners of dissent”, which would likely have had an effect on their thoughts around Martin.

Since then, things haven’t improved at Rangers as they remain winless in the Scottish Premiership, and their only wins have come in the Scottish League Cup.

With the situation nearly becoming untenable, the board may soon start to look at a previous managerial candidate to fill the role, should they give Martin the boot.

Rangers could look to recreate Celtic's Postecoglou's success

As per The Daily Record journalist Gavin Berry, one of the candidates that could be top of the list if Martin leaves is Kevin Muscat:

Muscat’s career thus far has followed a similar trajectory to that of Postecoglou’s, where he started in Australia and has now moved on to the Asian Leagues. The similarities go even further with both coaches having tenures at Melbourne Victory and Yokohama F. Marinos, with Muscat taking over from Postecoglou at both clubs.

Muscat is currently at the Chinese club Shanghai Port FC, where he has won both the Chinese FA Cup and the Chinese Super Cup.

Martin vs Postecoglou and why Muscat is the best candidate

Martin and Postecoglou had very different styles of play when managing in Scotland, and at the moment, it seems like the new Nottingham Forest manager’s style better fits the Scottish Premiership.

At Southampton, Martin’s style of play focused on playing out from the back and dominating possession. With a Premier League-quality side in the Championship, they were able to dominate games and secure promotion, but when they were promoted and were one of the weaker teams in the league, the tactic was ineffective.

When Martin was appointed to Rangers, it was speculated that he might be able to recreate the dominance he found in the Championship, but this has yet to happen.

Postecoglou’s method also saw his side with a high level of possession, but with a much higher line and greater attacking output. This saw his Celtic side average 2.3 points a game during his time there, leading to his winning the domestic treble. Muscat’s career may have been influenced by Postecoglou, and his sides have demonstrated the same attacking ethos.

Based on this, Postecoglou’s style of play seems to be the better one for the Scottish Premiership, so if they do decide to sack Martin, then Muscat and his attacking tactics would be the best possible replacement.

Moyes can ditch Barry & Beto to unleash "special" Everton star in new role

If there is one area of the pitch where David Moyes has improved Everton at the start of this season compared to the start of the previous campaign, it is in front of goal.

Seven games into the 2024/25 season, the Toffees had struggled to find the back of the net.

According to Understat, they’d scored seven goals in the same number of games under Sean Dyche. Yet, this term under the tutelage of Moyes, they have already scored nine goals, with more points to their name.

Goals are coming from the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish, but Moyes will be hoping strikers Beto and Thierno Barry can kickstart their campaign soon enough.

Barry and Beto’s start to the season

There are certainly different expectations that surround Beto and summer signing Barry. The Hill Dickinson Stadium may expect more frequent goals from the former, whereas their summer signing from Villarreal deserves more time.

Starting with Barry’s form this term, he has yet to find the back of the net in nine appearances for the club so far. To caveat that, the France under-21 international has only played 314 minutes in those games, equalling just 3.4 full 90-minute games.

Given the time it can take for a player of his inexperience to adapt to the Premier League, it is hard to criticise him.

Beto, on the other hand, could well be deserving of more criticism. At 27 years of age, he could certainly be considered the elder statesman of the two centre-forwards, but has just two goals in nine appearances this term.

Only one of those strikes has come in the Premier League, with Grealish setting him up to score thanks to a wonderful headed cross away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Yet, he has certainly left a little to be desired, and has now gone four consecutive starts without a goal, playing 45 minutes in all of those.

It is a conundrum for Moyes. He needs goals to come from centre-forward, although the man to do that might be an outside-of-the-box alternative.

Moyes’ Barry and Beto alternative

At the moment, solving the issues that the Toffees strikers are having in front of goal is not an immediate concern for Moyes. After all, they are scoring from other areas of the pitch, with Ndiaye the chief goal-getter at the moment.

But, eventually, the Scot is going to want to fix the issue. With no other natural number nine in the squad, he may have to get creative. One player who could slot in up front is summer signing Carlos Alcaraz.

The Argentine attacker is no stranger to leading the line. He’s done it nine times in his career, according to Transfermarkt, scoring and assisting two goals each from that area.

He’s a number 10 by trade, and is used to getting into the box and on the end of crosses.

In his short Everton career so far, the 22-year-old has only ever operated in attacking midfield, a little deeper as a number eight, and on each flank.

That has been to some degree of success, though; Alcaraz has bagged three goals and has three assists in just 23 Toffees appearances so far.

The “special” forward, as football scout Antonio Mango described him, actually scored on his first start for the club last February.

The strike came away to Crystal Palace, where he showed good instinct in the penalty area to pounce on a loose ball and fire home from 10 yards.

He can be a real thorn in the side of Everton’s opponents, that is for sure. The underlying stats from last season in the top flight highlight his high shot on target total per 90 minutes, with 1.4, which ranks him in the top 2% of Premier League attackers.

He can usually cause goals out of nowhere, too. The 22-year-old notched up 0.7 goal-creating actions each game last season, placing him in the top 7%.

There is certainly evidence to suggest that experimenting with Alacaraz up top could work well for Moyes. The Argentine attacker can be a nuisance in forward areas, and knows where the back of the net is.

It would be a bold call if the Toffees boss was to go down this route, but, it could certainly benefit his side in the short-term.

'Shocked' Nottingham Forest star thought Brazil call-up was a 'scam'

Nottingham Forest star John Victor felt that his Brazil national team call-up was a "scam" as he initially did not believe that Carlo Ancelotti had included him in the Selecao squad for the October friendlies at the last moment after ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson picked up a hamstring injury while playing for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig.

John Victor joined Forest from Botafogo

Victor left Brazilian giants Botafogo to sign for the Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the summer transfer window. So far in the 2025-26 campaign, the goalkeeper has made only one appearance for the English club, as he made his debut in the club's loss against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup third round last month. Victor was not expecting a national team call-up just two months after moving to England, but Ederson's hamstring injury prompted Ancelotti to include the 29-year-old at the last moment.

After linking up with the national team, Victor chatted with , where he said, "For me, it was a unique and wonderful feeling. I was on my way to the game and I got the news on the bus. I was shocked. I thought it was a prank call. I didn't have (Sérgio) Dimas's number, I had worked with him at Santos, and he was the one who sent the message. They asked for my passport and I said: 'Wow, could this be a scam?'

"I don't know, the way the world is today… but then he said he was going to be called up, and I was really happy right then and there. I celebrated with Igor (Jesus) while we were going to the game against Newcastle. It was really cool."

Victor on cloud nine after maiden national team call-up

Victor further elaborated on the feeling of representing the national team, as he added: "It hasn't sunk in yet. I arrived here yesterday. Since I was called up, a lot of footage has been played of what I've been through and everything that's happened in my career, the ups and downs, the times I imagined the moment would come when I was still at Botafogo, in several preliminary call-ups. And it hasn't sunk in yet. I'm very happy, very content to be here. I just have to thank God a lot."

Getty ImagesMan Utd and West Ham wanted Victor before Forest move

After an impressive season in Brazil, where he helped Botafogo win the league title, Victor was in demand in the summer transfer window. Premier League giants Manchester United and West Ham were keen on signing the custodian, with the Red Devils in search of Andre Onana's alternative at that time. The goalkeeper, however, decided to sign for Forest. As Brazil face Asian giants South Korea and Japan in friendly matches on October 10 and 14, respectively, Victor will hope that Carlo Ancelotti allows him to take the field for the Selecao for the first time in his career in one of the two matches.

Ex-CEO shares damning Celtic boardroom claim amid Brendan Rodgers doubt

With Brendan Rodgers’ future still up in the air, a fresh update has dropped regarding the situation and Celtic’s board, courtesy of an ex-CEO.

Rodgers delighted after dramatic Celtic win

The Hoops left it very late to win 2-1 away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, with new signing Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers couldn’t hide his delight at the result, as Celtic’s winning mentality shone through, like it so often does.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s been a long two weeks, so to get back out on to the football field – and this is always a tough game here – I’m so pleased for the players.“We weren’t quite in the right fluidity in the first-half. We got into some good areas but we weren’t feeding the wide guys well enough. But I thought in the second half we were much better.

“We started the half really well, got in front, and we had control of the game and had other good chances. They made some really good blocks.

“At 1-0 it can always be in the balance, no matter how much dominance you have, and we got punished from a corner and then they had a wee bit of momentum then with not so long to go. But we stuck at it, we defended the box when he had to, we were really strong and had that Celtic spirit.”

New update on Rodgers' Celtic future

Away from a huge win, though, Rodgers’ future is still a key talking point, and speaking to Football Insider, former Aberdeen chief executive officer Keith Wyness claimed that Celtic’s board will cause huge anger among the fanbase if the manager leaves.

“Now, what I’m hearing from my Celtic contacts is that they’re feeling that the board has become a little bit ivory tower in its view these days. They’re older. They’re used to doing things a certain way, they’re not listening to what they need to do to change, they’re not prepared to change, and there isn’t a hunger and a desire anymore to go forward.

“They’re quite happy with the money in the bank. So that’s what frustrates fans more than anything else when they see their prices going up and they have to fund the season tickets, and they don’t see that being transferred into ambition. It isn’t as though the club’s bust, the very opposite, that’s what frustrates people.

“If Brendan goes, then I think the board will see some real anger, obviously depending on who they bring in. Brendan had managed to win back over a lot of the fans and there’s a lot of sympathy for Brendan in this situation.”

There is no doubt that life under Rodgers isn’t perfect right now, and that he isn’t blameless when it comes to some underwhelming performances, but he still feels like the right man for the job for many fans.

As Wyness alludes to, he wasn’t fully supported financially in the summer transfer window, causing plenty of frustration, so he can only work with the squad he has now.

Rodgers may have unearthed Celtic's next Tierney & it's not Saracchi

Sacking Rodgers would be a big risk by the board, and if that did happen, or if the Northern Irishman leaves, they will have to nail his successor to please the supporters.

£50m offer now received for Liverpool to sell star who played vs Arsenal

Liverpool have plenty of plates spinning ahead of the transfer deadline, though they could now have some thinking to do after a sizeable offer was made for one of their key men.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot retains optimism amid transfer deadline

While Liverpool’s two-pronged pursuit of Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi plays out, there are plenty of other reasons for Arne Slot to remain optimistic as his side look to claim the Premier League title once again.

Hugo Ekitike’s arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt has lived up to expectations, and the Dutchman is confident the Frenchman will only continue to improve over the coming months as he fully settles in at Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike scores for Liverpool

Addressing his development and how he can improve, Slot said before his side took on Arsenal: “I think he’s already made a big impact in the attacking part of our game. The most simple answer to what he can improve is his match fitness. So I expect him to do even a lot more without the ball than he already does, because he’s already working hard.

“There he can improve, which is completely normal, because he has to adjust from a different league, from a different playing style. “

With a wealth of riches at his disposal, Slot also wants to bring Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers to Anfield, albeit that may be easier said than done, given they are already working on other deals at a late stage in the window.

New Gakpo: Liverpool agree personal terms for "unplayable" new signing

Liverpool are looking to complete a few more signings before the transfer deadline on Monday.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 29, 2025

Excitement is bubbling ahead of a deadline day that could deliver another few statement signings, though there is now a scenario where one of the Dutchman’s key men could be set to leave Anfield for a new challenge.

Liverpool could allow Ibrahima Konate to depart for Real Madrid

According to reports in Spain via Anfield Watch, Liverpool were willing to allow Ibrahima Konate to leave for the Saudi Pro League, but the player himself has rejected a move that would’ve been worth over £50 million to head to the Gulf region.

While the team that put forward the proposal remains unnamed, the Reds clearly have one eye on his contract situation, as his deal is set to expire next summer. Their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Guehi is only likely to fan the flames further, suggesting that a departure may be on the cards.

After featuring against Arsenal in the 1-0 victory at Anfield, Konate has made 136 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, and in that time, has cemented himself as a key figure under Slot and Jurgen Klopp.

Labelled “sensational” by David Lynch, the France international won 137 duels in the Premier League during the Reds’ title victory last term, though speculation over his future may well lead to a considerable dilemma over whether to stick or twist in light of his complex contract situation.

Their new Trent: FSG’s key target flying to sign for Liverpool on Thursday

Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth looms large, and for a club that typically shows plenty of restraint in the transfer market, it’s curious to see so many fresh faces.

And there are more yet to come.

After winning the Premier League with relative ease last season, Arne Slot has strengthened his attack with fast-rising striker Hugo Ekitike and a new playmaker in Florian Wirtz, who is considered one of the most exciting talents in world football.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid, the 31-year-old Andy Robertson has lost a yard and Kostas Tsimikas is edging toward an Anfield exit, so adding Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong to the defensive flanks has perhaps reinforced the widths for years to come.

Richard Hughes and Arne Slot

Led by Richard Hughes, this summer’s approach feels very different, but it’s unlikely to be the new normal. Undergoing a period of transformation, the Merseysiders are laying the foundations for a new era, and there are still several stunning deals which may be completed.

Liverpool planning for more signings

The interminable pursuit of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak continues. Liverpool desperately want the striker; the Magpies desperately don’t want him to leave. Isak, for what it’s worth, is perhaps the most desperate of them all, so intent on joining Slot’s squad this summer.

It all hinges on Newcastle signing replacements, which will need to be found in the aggregate, rather than just one new goalscorer.

Liverpool have already seen an initial £110m offer rejected by Eddie Howe’s side, but with the Sweden international refusing to reintegrate into the Tyneside squad, it’s clear that Liverpool stand more than a swinging chance of getting it done before the end of the month.

Elsewhere, talks continue for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who would be the perfect man to complete Virgil van Dijk’s backline.

However, there are plenty of variables at play with that one, with conflicting reports leaving the jury out.

Though Liverpool want the England defender, the urgency has been tempered somewhat by the completion of another deal for a rising talent destined for the top.

Key target travelling to Merseyside

As confirmed by Sky Sports, Liverpool have agreed a deal with Serie A side Parma for the transfer of centre-back Giovanni Leoni, who is slated to arrive for an initial £26m fee.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

And Fabrizio Romano has since informed the masses that the 18-year-old is on his way to Merseyside for a medical, with the player and his agent set to be in Liverpool today.

Despite competition from the Premier League and various Italian clubs, Liverpool have succeeded in winning the battle for the sought-after defender, who has made the brave decision to leave his homeland while still in the fledgling stage of his career.

Why Liverpool are signing Giovanni Leoni

Such a prodigious defensive talent eases the woes from the failed bid to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth in May, the 20-year-old instead signing for Real Madrid.

It also provides Slot with his own version of Alexander-Arnold, who also emerged onto the scene as a youngster, so clearly cut from expensive cloth when Jurgen Klopp watched him curl a free-kick over the wall and into the back of Hoffenheim’s net in 2017, thus starting a remarkable journey to the apex of the game.

Though Trent’s decision to leave Liverpool for Los Blancos at the end of his contract last season left a bitter taste in fans’ mouths, there’s no denying the 25-year-old is one of the greatest Redmen in modern history, having played 354 matches for his boyhood club, scoring 23 goals, providing 94 assists and winning the whole gamut.

In any case, he will be missed, for his playmaking abilities stretch beyond what is expected or even conceivable for defenders to have within their locker.

Data via Premier League

Liverpool’s staggering summer spending has eased his departure, that and winning last year’s Premier League title, but in Leoni, Slot could land his answer to the all-inspiring right-back, landing a talented defender with hype around his name at such an early stage.

Leoni, despite only breaking into Parma’s first team last season, has earned a reputation for his strong protective ability and his expansive technical game.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig has already declared him to be “one of the most complete teenage centre-backs in Europe”, and having started 14 Serie A games last season, all of which came from November and beyond, he’s clearly established himself as a reliable option in Italy.

Indeed, he completed 89% of his passes and won 63% of his aerial battles in the Italian top-flight last year, emphasising a precocious understanding and reading of the game.

Moreover, the 6 foot 5 sensation has an aggressiveness and progressiveness to his game, which allows him to step beyond what is required for someone of his position.

In this way, he could actually serve as the symbolic successor to Alexander-Arnold’s position at Liverpool, joining the manager’s Slot in its infancy. If a bit more substance is needed, Leoni also played three matches as a makeshift right-back last season, further underlining his athleticism and capacity to succeed.

While Liverpool still hope to sign Guehi before the end of the month, it’s clear that Leoni has what it takes to become a superstar of a defender, and he might just reach the heights and the success on Merseyside to establish himself as Slot’s answer to Alexander-Arnold.

PIF now want "amazing" Wissa alternative who's scored 5 goals vs Newcastle

After Brentford turned down their latest offer to sign Yoane Wissa, Newcastle United have now reportedly set their sights on another Premier League rival.

Newcastle walk away from Wissa deal

It has been a miserable summer for the Magpies. From early frustration in pursuit of Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo to Liverpool’s swoop to sign Hugo Ekitike and the unraveling Alexander Isak saga, to say not much has gone to plan would be an understatement.

Now, Brentford have seemingly made things worse. After missing out on Ekitike, Newcastle reportedly turned towards Wissa in hope of finally landing a top target.

The forward left the Bees’ pre-season camp amid the rumours and things looked to be heading in the right direction. As has been the case all throughout this summer, however, things have now reportedly changed.

According to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Brentford have now closed the door on selling Wissa for anything less than £50m+ after Newcastle raised their bid to over the £30m-mark. As a result, the Magpies – for now – have walked away.

Wissa, meanwhile, has reportedly refused to train amid disappointment over Brentford’s stance and the pact that they’ve broken which should have allowed him to leave for £26m this summer.

Whether the forward can be persuaded to return to training remains to be seen. Of course, if the situation stays unresolved, then it will be interesting to see if Newcastle return with another attempt to sign the 28-year-old.

Newcastle are looking to bring in another striker or two this summer

For Eddie Howe, the saga represents yet more frustration after he admitted that it’s been a difficult summer in pursuit of targets.

He told reporters: “I wish I could give you clarity, and some kind of guarantee that this or that is going to happen, but I can’t. My wish was for us to do our business early, and we certainly tried, but it wasn’t to be.”

Frustrated or not, Newcastle have now reportedly returned to the drawing board and shifted their focus towards yet another striker option.

Newcastle now eyeing Watkins move

Following the Wissa bombshell, those at St James’ Park reportedly have another option in mind. According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, PIF and Newcastle are now eyeing a summer swoop to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

As the stats highlight, Newcastle’s backline are already well aware of Watkins’ quality and have been on the end of it five times in nine games over the years. As alternative options for Wissa go or even replacements for Isak, the England man certainly wouldn’t be a bad option.

Full of praise for his star striker last season, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery told reporters: “He’s amazing. Because he’s a really hard worker and his commitment to work every day is amazing.

“When he is scoring goals, it’s the main objective he can have. Where he is assisting as well, he’s contributing to help the team. But even when he’s not doing both, he’s working for the team. Defensively, the commitment was always high. He is in the press to the opponent.”

With Hardik absent from the ODIs, seam-bowling allrounder Shivam Dube, whose only ODI so far was in 2019, earns a recall. Dube’s stocks in T20 cricket have grown considerably since IPL 2023, when he made a name for himself as an enforcer against spin for Chennai Super Kings. The selectors also rewarded Riyan Parag by picking him in both formats. His one-day elevation can be looked at as a reward for his domestic form – he was the leading run-getter in the Deodhar Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, where he made seven straight half-centuries while leading Assam to their first-ever semi-final.Fast bowler Harshit Rana was also handed a maiden ODI call-up.
